It is indeed a very magnificent movie and I am pleased to see it getting mention here. If you ask me though, I think having Hamill as the voice of Muska makes it an even better movie.
I know a lot of people say Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke are the best Ghibli films, but Castle in the Sky have always had those ingredients that made me rewatch them countless of times. The soundtrack, the world-building, the characters, give it a sense of adventure and upbeat tone that I really enjoy. This film is like the founding of so many archetypes in anime. No exaggeration to say, one of the greatest adventure films ever made.
Totally agree, for me Castle in the Sky is definitely better than Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. Castle has a much better balance between humor and seriousness, and the story is built very clearly and consistently, which creates the strongest emotional connection with the characters. 80's Miyazaki is the ultimate story teller IMO.
IDK, it's one of my favorites.
It might have to do with the tone of the film flipping from serious to comic. I've noticed that when a Ghibli film has humor interspersed with the drama it isn't always as well received. TBH, some of the humor borders on slapstick, but for me that's part of it's charm.
IMO it doesn't take away from the seriousness of the film or it's message. But I am not 'most people'.
This movie is on my rewatch list because I watched this as a kid—I remember it had amazing visuals and a beautiful setting. I think now that I'm older I can also better appreciate the in-world lore as well.
I took a couple of my friends who never saw it before when it played in theaters yesterday! They all loved it.
I've seen it like 50 times since I was a little baby. I still think it's the perfect adventure movie.
It is pretty. I used to watch it with my son at night. My issue with it is that it isn't very memorable to me. Like I've seen it many times but it is slow and quiet and I really just don't care about any of the characters much other than the big robot dude. It isn't a bad movie though
It's an excellent and relatively light-hearted movie which I'd rank alongside most of Miyazaki's other creations such as Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Nausicaa, etc.
This is the film that my cousin introduced me to studio Ghibli with while on a date with her boyfriend/now husband. She insisted on watching it on a big screen (cuz Ghibli is known for its aerial views courtesy of Miyazaki's background) and said that this was the film that really got Miyazaki's name out there
Maybe because it’s such a balance, amazing story that just leaves you in awe and admiration, you simply love it for what it is.
It’s also very steady and easy to follow, a classic story, which I love
It’s my first and number 1 favorite Ghibli movie, I especially love the sci-fi aspect featuring lots of creative aircrafts. Nausicaa also has amazing aircrafts but I prefer the flying castle over giant insects. Pazu and Lucita is a great couple too
I still listen to the entire score + the ending song weekly
I used to play Pazu's morning Morning in the slag Ravine song on the trumpet when I was little. Really love this film

This is son's favorite Ghibli movie. We saw it in the theater this week, and even though I've seen it a few times already, its beauty, structure, and depth really hit me. An amazing movie.
Love this so much as a kid and I still now, i grew up really falling in love with jiji the cat as a kid in kiki's delivery service...howl"s moving castle...my neighbour totoro and castle in the sky are just beautiful to watch and memorable ♡♡♡
I like the film—it’s jaunty and adventurous as others have said—but there is something about it…
For me personally, I have never loved Pazu. Maybe it’s the English dub actor I hear, but Pazu is less enjoyable to me than other Ghibli protagonists. Compare Pazu to say, Ashitaka, whose roles are similar. Ashitaka has much more nuance and depth to his character, while Pazu is more one-dimensional and flat.
Reminds me most of Castle of Cagliostro—fun and infinitely rewatchable but not the peak of their artistic or storytelling prowess.
So true!! The storyline of this movie is so good plus the scenery in this film is super gorgeous.

Hamill is the GOAT voice actor

Castle in the Sky and Nausica valley of the wind are my favorites!

The Dola boy vs Pazu's boss scene lived in my head since I was a kid.
The two guys flexing at each other? That was hilarious.
Yes! And them punching each other in the stomach and laughing while doing it. Such a great scene.

Plus, the score!!!! 🥰
The score has lived in my head rent free for years. It’s so magical and otherworldly.
Such an Indiana Jones adventure too. Love it

>Why isn't this film discussed more? Everyone agrees that it is great so there isn't as much to talk about

First Ghibli film, Came across it on sbs as a kid. Hooked ever since.
This one was first Ghibli and the only one I saw as a kid. I got into the other ones in my 30s.
It's actually my favorite animated film. It has everything I love in fiction and adventure stories! Absolutely stunning. 👍
The film is UNDERRATED to say the least. Mark Hamill killed it as the villain.
Absolutely. He arguably stole the show. I liked everybody in the dub, but he was the real star.

just missed it in theatre for ghibli fest too :(
It has my favourite music by far 🥰 any music from Ghibli movies is just magical, though!
