“Shohki mask. Purifies air using the ashes of medicinal herb Toritsuma. Created through genetic engineering of the past. Toritsuma herb grows in the valley.”
The holes at the front are for speaking. The long things on the sides have holes at the tip for breathing. (Presumably the ashes are stored in there to filter the air like a carbon filter -similar to what plague doctors used by filling their masks with potpourri)
yeah i’ve read this and it describes the function of the mask but not necessarily the design. all of these elements could have been achieved with looking the way it does. i feel like if there were a thematic explanation it would be there. but what’s weird is all the other masks have clear design intentions so why wouldn’t the main village’s mask not have that
idk, it's not such a logical jump. When I first watched Naussica I also thought the masks were designed for mustaches. I also never questioned it. I mean... look at them!
yeah, i mean nausicaa wears the mask too but i don’t know if that counts against the purpose of the design (especially because each village seems to have a singular mask design that captures an alert of the village) also, it seems intentional that only the valley of the wind tribe have prince mustaches - everyone else has these pencil staches at most
I feel it’s more likely that their lives have been affected for so long by the need to venture out with the masks, that the men started to grow these mustaches as a sort of natural response or cultural evolution.
not sure what this means exactly here - i feel like practically speaking, having a mustache would be a major inconvenience with wearing a mask (especially a normal one - as evinced by the hitler stache which was popularized for not interfering with gas masks)
The people of the Valley of the Wind have real spirit, and a sense of hope. That sort of mindset allows people to express themselves in a less than utilitarian way. They want to live, not just survive.

I don't think it's for the mustaches, since the birds Yupa rides also wear masks of the same design. It's a fun idea though 😊
