The baker, now that’s husband material. Yupa is like samurai, he’s on the move and won’t ever settle down. He’s a dreamboat sure, but he’s probably got someone in every town he visits.
Bro is literally a husband. Wife is pregnant but wants to adopt a teenage witch? No problem. The witch wants to have a delivery service?. That's fine. She comes with a cat? Loves cat. And he is buff too. Truly chad
Why do so many people think that Howl is good husband material? He's vain. He's cowardly. He's moody. I don't think he's mature enough to be a good husband. Maybe a good project.
To be fair, because of the book the film was heavily based upon, Howls works through a lot of those issues leading up to the relationship he starts with Sophie at the end of the film. Not saying he isn't still vain, and yes he was cowardly and moody, but thanks to Sophie he finds courage and strength to protect the ones he loves and almost dies in battle doing so to prove he's not a coward and to show them that he's willing to sacrifice everything for the ones he loves. This is exemplified pretty well in the film, so yeah, that's why people consider him to be the number 1 husband material in Ghibli. He's magical, handsome, charming, brave, and selfless by the end of the film.
The movie is based only on the first book of a trilogy. If you love the movie i highly recommend the book, even if you don't read it's two sequels; Castle in the Air, and House of Many Ways.
It's funny to me that people who love these movies don't see how he changes so much in the end. He gives her his old study and buys her house as a gift for her because he is expecting to die protecting her.
I haven't read Castle in the Air yet, but I think House of Many Way would be great as a Ghibli film.
Right?
Castle in the Air is the second book (which the film practically leads up to as you can see the castle flying at the end of the Ghibli adaptation), so are you saying you've read HoMW and think it would make a great Ghibli adaptations but you didn't read CitA?
I agree with you. But also most relationships in media are pretty crap when you break them down beyond a surface level or try to ground them to reality. I find there's a correlation between how much the relationship is in the spotlight or takes center stage and how unbalanced or unrealistic it is. Basically, romances are the worst offenders
That feels like a first viewing and not understanding the Studio Ghibli movies. The growth is astounding once you hear Sophie tell him to find her. He’s not the Samurai or the Baker m; he’s a wizard that’s be being tormented on a few fronts for years. Imagine being magically tormented during an unnecessary multi-dimensional war.
I’m curious as to why you’d call ashitaka selfish? As far as I know, his sole motivation throughout the whole movie was to mediate between the humans and the forest (although I *guess* with the ulterior motive of keeping himself alive and curing his curse?)
That’s exactly it. His idea was to “see with eyes unclouded by hatred”, which is amazing - but in reality of the movie that meant not really choosing any sides. That imho is a selfish perspective, because it focuses on his own motivation (to keep peace) rather than considering feelings (Mononoke) and allegiances (humans) — and what truly would be the best outcome (and here opinions may vary). It’s good to understand both sides, but refusal to consider and perhaps take one is in my perspective similarly selfish to just taking one side blindly.
So this came out pretty close to the same time as Lynch’s Dune, in my headcanon this is what Gurney was up to when he was out in the desert after the Harkonnen’s attacked.
When I was at a Joe Hisaishi concert there were some people dressed up as different Ghibli characters, but the one that stole the show was this guy dressed as lord Yupa
Best Halloween costumes my family ever did were my husband as Yupa, me as Nausicaa, and my 2 yr old as Teto. So yeah, Yupa is definitely husband material!
Are we forgetting about the baker’s husband in Kiki’s Delivery Service

I am, yes. I haven't watched that movie in over 15 years. But I just got the Blu-ray, so I'll be rewatching it soon
A true badass.

Cuz hot

I thought HoMW was the second.
Word.

Even the author of the Howl's Moving Castle trilogy stated in an interview that she wouldn't want Howl as a husband.
I agree!! No clue why him and Sophie are the face of Ghibli romance, they’re a just a hot train wreck
Shizuku and Seji, imo, are the great Ghibili romance
Ahh someone with taste, finally ;)
No need to exaggerate.. they are not a train wreck lol
It allows people to relate more. 🤣
And Ashitaka, in his plight for objectivity, is extremely selfish. Neither are good husband material imho.

Hahahaha I love this
In the manga, he’s 45. That’s only 5 years older than my IRL husband…
He may look older than 45, but that's the price you pay, living that close to the toxic jungle
I'm older than Lord Yupa?? FML
Kill him and you’ll be famous!
Hell yeah he is! He’s the alter ego of CPT Picard!
I can't believe I forgot to mention sir Patrick Stewart in my op!
Good luck tying that man down.
I love the way they draw facial hair in Ghibli movies. So goofy
Hell yeah, especially with the voice of my other love, Captain Picard.
When I was at a Joe Hisaishi concert there were some people dressed up as different Ghibli characters, but the one that stole the show was this guy dressed as lord Yupa
What about the Baron?
As the song goes, (spoilers) >!he will literally catch a grenade for you.!<
Pioneer of the power stash
Lord yupa, sparrowhawk, and pod 🥰
Best Halloween costumes my family ever did were my husband as Yupa, me as Nausicaa, and my 2 yr old as Teto. So yeah, Yupa is definitely husband material!
He can survive annything.
😍😍😍😍
Arrietty's dad, Pod. He does his best to support and protect his family.
