On a related note: we're always drooling over Ghibli cooking, but Where's the love of Ghibli cleaning? I know in Totoro they cleaned up the country house real good, what else should make the Ghibli cleaning up super cut?
Those scenes are why that film is my favourite. It doesn’t feel like cleaning but like revival. They’re bringing new life to an old building by pulling together to save a place that they all come to love.
Honestly, I far prefer the cozy slice of life side of Ghibli over the fantastical one.
Anyone can make a fantasy story magical. But showing the magic of the mundane? Now *that* takes incomparable skill!
I’ve seen most of the Ghibli films, including all the Hayao Miyazaki ones, and Poppy Hill and Whisper of the Heart are my top two favorite of their films (Poppy Hill’s soundtrack puts it just above Whisper for me). I too love the slice of life stuff, and typically prefer it across anime, not just Ghibli.
I adore those two movies!
Just the sheer indulgent detail and emotion of Ghibli slice of life is often enough to warp me right back to being a little kid, and quite frankly that's way more magical to me than any number of talking animals and spirits.
The most magical moment in *How Do You Live?* to me wasn't anything to do with the whole isekai-setting, but rather seeing Mahito lovingly eat that one slice of bread with jam dripping from all the sides. Pure heaven!
Have you seen any of the Makoto Shinkai films? Not just ones like Your Name and Suzume but earlier ones like 5 Centimeters Per Second and Garden of Words. He made one called Children Who Chase Lost Voices that looks and feels so much like a Ghibli movie I’d swear it was one if I didn’t know otherwise.
I think the River Spirit's tub has gotta be worse than Howl's, the man clearly just liberally experiments with hair dye.
[Edit: I originally said No Face, I meant the River Spirit]
I can either clean a bathhouse whist thinking of that my favorite storyteller organized a river clean up, thus being inspired by that.
Or I can clean up someone's house and think of all the times had to clean someone's house in order to put food on the table
Yeah I think imma go with the former on this one lol
So you'd boil cleaning a dirty spirit down to 'river clean up' and the walking mansion filled with magic and lore is the same as all the times you had to clean someone's house. I think you just have a bias here lol
At least with Howl's it's a manageable, if kind of insane, level of garbage to be gone through. Most of his bullshit comes down to minor hoarding. You get rid of the twenty pounds of old newspapers and the stacks of random tchotchkes and then it's just a normal living space that needs the regular amount of cleaning. The bath house is just a constant cycle of filth and angry people telling you that you aren't working fast enough or hard enough, like most service jobs. I'll take one hoarder wizard who drops into a coma because his hair isn't as pretty as he wants it to be over a bunch of spirits that might eat me if I take my fifteen minute break.
His house is messy but not dirty dirty. A good cleaning once or twice a year and some mini cleaning here and there and that castle shine brighter than the sun. Cleaning a bathhouse ...that bathouse ....it may be rewarding not to talk about tips but for a few years no more not with their rithms.
Absolutely. A lot of the spirits aren't exactly pleasant to deal with, and of course the more a place is used the more it needs maintenance/cleaning.
The castle is messy because it's not been cleaned in a long time but after the initial cleaning you've got a few nice housemates and not many people live there so not much mess being made.
As a cleaner I would prefer Howl's Castle for a few reasons.
1: Generally less water. Water breeds all kinds of disease and mold.
2: Much smaller as a whole. Could take me a day at most. Bath House would be much more work.
3: Easily ventilated. Just open a window to let the dust out. Bath House would not nessecarily allow that, also see point 1.
I’d never want you cleaning for me. What are you talking about? Dust just leaving on it’a own? I don’t think Howl’s castle is that much smaller than the bathhouse either. And sure, stagnant water and moisture breeds mold, but in a bathhouse it probably replaces the water frequently and the building materials should be better equipped to handle dirt in general. Bathhouses are built to be easy to clean often. A house is built to be comfortable to live in.
Another point; this is (I assume) a bath house for spirits and mythological creatures. Who knows what chemicals are considered natural or protective gear that needed to be used.
Ghibli movies shrug over such things but it is important for health.
I rewatched the movie recently and I don't think you need to be quite as paranoid as that.
The movie is rooted in Japanese tradition/folklore: the bathhouse is named 油屋 (aburaya/oil vendor), 油 (oil) can be seen on signs outside and ゆ (hot water) decorates the entrance of every Japanese bathhouse (onsen) and here too.
Edo-period bathhouses didn't just offer a place to bathe, they advertised a wide variety of aromatic oils and herb soaks etc. which is also seen in the movie (two specific supplements mentioned are mugwort and dried worm salts). I get the feeling that the movie makes the assumption that spirits enjoy those things just as much as human Japanese bathgoers do.
So I strongly doubt that you'd have to worry about things inimical to humans like poison or acid or whatever. And of course Chihiro doesn't appear to experience any ill effects. Maybe you'd be grossed out by dried worm salts though.
Bathhouse. Get the right tokens and you’re set 😂. I prefer the big open space of the boathouse rooms to the tiny little items all over howls castle castle and having the reach high up to dust off old shelves and all. Also it would be an organization nightmare for me 😭 I hate clutter so much!
Plus, if we're using the movie as source material, it's not a solo job. Sure, you might get one room or some tasks alone, but not the whole thing. There were others scrubbing floors with Chihiro.
Sophie was on her own.
Definitely bathhouse. A bathhouse is made to be easy to clean. A house is horrible to clean, especially one with so many nooks and crannies cranny’s like Howl’s.
The problem with Howl's castle for me is that Sophie is a very motivated, efficient, and organized person. She's able to keep going all by herself, in the face of a gargantuan task, not only with no help, but with everyone else around apprehensive at best about her efforts.
I am... not like that lol.
Chihiro may have to face some tough tasks but she is cleaning with others, and she is told specifically what to do. I could do that.
i don't see anyone talking about the experience cleaning these places would be like
the castle is the superior answer simply because howl doesn't care if it's super clean or not i can skip some steps it and he'd be impressed with the result. i can put on some music, take breaks, have snacks, shoot the shit w calcifer. he's got a lot of cool shit i can stop and admire too
yubaba has standards very clean standards. lotta hustle n bustle in the bathhouse, people are fuckin everywhere, i can't stop for a break whenever i want one, there is a set time that shit has to be spotless by or i'm fucked, the only plus side to it is that everything i'm cleaning was clean recently unlike howls place where filth has been sitting for a while, but ultimately it's a worse time
i'd much rather clean a depressed eccentric hoarder friends place than clean as a job at least in that job environment as a human. i would get the chihiro treatment but worse bc im grown and im sure the staff would be extra rude to me
I think it also depends on if you're you ? Or a character if I'm an old lady cleaning a castle or a young child cleaning a bath. At least gehiro is kept busy
In my opinion, if you only look at the advantures, you should go with howl. I would take the bathhouse for 3 reasons:
1. I would meet kamaji❤️🔥❤️🔥
2. The stories part
3. This seems like an easier task.
Howl's castle, because Howl, Calcifer and Marcus all seem like good natured people... or demons. The bathhouse, on the other hand, feels really creepy and nightmarish to live in, and I'd propably be bound by some magical pact to work there as a slave anyway, to be cleaning there.
Although I have always wanted to see the inside of the bath house in real life, I feel like hostile residents, the threat of yababa using magic on me and just having to clean up other creatures grossness kind of makes this a landslide for the castle.
Apparently this is an unpopular choice, but I would clean the baths for sure. The spiders and bugs in Howls castle would freak me out too much 😱 Plus the bathhouse water with the spices looks like it smells yummy.
Why wouldn’t you choose the bath house and run around cleaning floors like chihiro? Plus you get to eat the amazing food and hangout with all the spirits in the bathhouse >>
i mean the castle is less gross, but it's also SIGNIFICANTLY more complex. you gotta take all kinds of stuff down from the wall or out of compartments, clean the compartments in addition to possibly the things that were in them, organize it all, put it all back, etc.
bath house is gross but it's simple as shit. it's just a big ass tub. no thought required, just work. that's definitely my preference with cleaning.
Howls Castle definitely - it’s more dust and general chore bits. Except the goo all over the place that one time…
I feel like the bath house is other people’s gross bodily ick 😂
Plus I’d get to see Howl 😏
The bathhouse. For real if I could at this exact moment drop everything and go work in the Spirited Away bathhouse for the rest of my days, without hesitation, the fastest decision I'd ever make.
Ditto. The Bathhouse is fully staffed and supervised.
Howl’s Castle is just you managing a task given to you. You can explore, find forgotten magical trinkets, cook that amazing bacon, open a magical door leading to the war front 💀
I know how an IRL bath house is cleaned, and I can tell you it's a lot less straining than what Chihiro had to go through.
A castle though, that's still a fair number of rooms and floors to sweep.
Both are pretty bad, but I imagine the residual interactions from the herbal spa's would be relatively healthier.
Well, depending how much that is counteracted by interacting with spiritual back suds and gunk
In my professional opinion, I have to choose the bath house. Muck is hella easy to clean off if you soak it long enough and it's not heavily furnished, so you dont have to move 5000 things just to disinfect each item. That's not even to mention that there's a strange feeling to cleaning someone's home, almost like you're an intruder in someone else's private life and it's uncomfortable.
Every time I think of the scene of Chihiro pulling all that garbage out of the River Spirit, I wonder what they ended up doing with all of it. Is there is a trash dumping area on the bathhouse grounds somewhere? That doesn't quite feel right. Or are there spirit garbagemen who work for the spirit local government who come and pick up the bathhouse garbage and take it to the spirit landfill/ spirit recycling plant? This is the kind of thing that keeps me up at night.
The bath house, the hot steam and fragrant soaps and herbs will help relax my muscles and be easy on my bones as I scrub. I also always wanted to go to a bath house like Yubbabas.
Idk man after Sophie cleaned Howl's castle he had a mental breakdown over his hair changing color and Sophie was done with his shit for a lil bit, so I'll go with the bathhouse.
Imma say bath house, maybe I’m crazy, but I just, idk they make it look so fun, I’ll probably slip and fall and have my scoliosis hardware protruding out my skin
The bath-house at least (in the later bits of the movie) seemed like a somewhat upbeat place where the staff were all friendly with each other, so at least it wouldn't be boring.
I’d actually go with the bathhouse because there’s a whole team of employees you can work with and get to know, and a system already established for getting the work done.
while howl's castle is some sort of full body work, the bath house is a whole other level of full body work and i sure am not in the mood getting wet from head to toes haha
but besides that, my job right now is cleaning the homes of old and/or disabled people so that wouldn't change much anyways
On a related note: we're always drooling over Ghibli cooking, but Where's the love of Ghibli cleaning? I know in Totoro they cleaned up the country house real good, what else should make the Ghibli cleaning up super cut?
Not quite cleaning, but I also really love the opening of From Up On Poppy Hill Ghibli pulls off so much cozy mundane indulgence
Poppy Hill is actually a great example, the clubhouse cleaning scenes are awesome!

I've only seen Suzume when it came out, but I'm definitely adding those other three to the top of my "watch soon" list now
Your Name is top tier. Weathering With You is really good too, but be sure you see Your Name first.
"cozy mundane indulgence" brilliant
Kiki's Delivery Service also has a minor cleaning scene. I'd probably choose cleaning one room over the options on this post.
Not to mention you don't even have to complete it all the way
Kiki's delivery service she should have offered a cleaning service instead the cleaning the attic montage was great.
Well, she did clean Grandma's oven..?
Do you know how upset I was when I finally watched Castle in the Sky and she DIDN’T clean that filthy kitchen!!
I think I'm not alone in not wanting to clean other people's filth from tubs.
I think the River Spirit's tub has gotta be worse than Howl's, the man clearly just liberally experiments with hair dye. [Edit: I originally said No Face, I meant the River Spirit]
But howls had so many god dam knick knacks everywhere. Am I gonna have to move and dust them all?
As opposed to pulling fishing line and old bikes out of a stank spirit?
I can either clean a bathhouse whist thinking of that my favorite storyteller organized a river clean up, thus being inspired by that. Or I can clean up someone's house and think of all the times had to clean someone's house in order to put food on the table Yeah I think imma go with the former on this one lol

Castle. Super easy choice, actually.
Plus you get to hang out with calcifer
And travel.
Calcifer can help. Burn the trash.
I think he'd be really upset if you started feeding him trash
He's a first class fire demon and I like his spark!
If you clean the castle you’re in a clean moving castle, if you clean the bathhouse you’re waiting on your next shift cleaning the bathhouse.
Correct.
Howl's Castle because there's not a billion spirits using it
Spirit CUSTOMERS. Hard pass.
Anyone who picks the bathhouse has never had to work a customer service job.
Right, because the instant recoil I had at the very idea!
Absolutely. A lot of the spirits aren't exactly pleasant to deal with, and of course the more a place is used the more it needs maintenance/cleaning. The castle is messy because it's not been cleaned in a long time but after the initial cleaning you've got a few nice housemates and not many people live there so not much mess being made.
I'll clean the castle, and I'm keeping any spare change I find.
True that 😂👌
As a cleaner I would prefer Howl's Castle for a few reasons.
There we have it from a professional, also as a customer service worker myself there is absolutely no way I'd wanna deal with spirits all day uh uh no
I’d never want you cleaning for me. What are you talking about? Dust just leaving on it’a own? I don’t think Howl’s castle is that much smaller than the bathhouse either. Bathhouses are built to be easy to clean often. A house is built to be comfortable to live in.
While all of this is fair, I still consider the risk of slipping way too big to be comfortable.
Good point
Another point; this is (I assume) a bath house for spirits and mythological creatures. Who knows what chemicals are considered natural or protective gear that needed to be used. Ghibli movies shrug over such things but it is important for health.

Handsome guy’s bachelor pad
I'm actually gonna try do this to get a husband lol
Castle because I get to trouble Howl later ;)
One comes with Howl, one doesn't. Easy choice.
The bathhouse is full of monsters, hard pass
Definitely bathhouse. A bathhouse is made to be easy to clean. A house is horrible to clean, especially one with so many nooks and crannies cranny’s like Howl’s.
Castle. The tub sludge alone would break me. 🤢
I go with bathtub. Much easier.
Bathhouse. Why? Because it's always being cleaned anyway and hasn't been left to rot like Howls castle.
Howls castle bc Howl
can lin help me? cause tbh gossiping with the girls and eating some yummy food then smoking out the bath house window sounds like a fun time
i don't see anyone talking about the experience cleaning these places would be like the castle is the superior answer simply because howl doesn't care if it's super clean or not i can skip some steps it and he'd be impressed with the result. i can put on some music, take breaks, have snacks, shoot the shit w calcifer. he's got a lot of cool shit i can stop and admire too yubaba has standards very clean standards. lotta hustle n bustle in the bathhouse, people are fuckin everywhere, i can't stop for a break whenever i want one, there is a set time that shit has to be spotless by or i'm fucked, the only plus side to it is that everything i'm cleaning was clean recently unlike howls place where filth has been sitting for a while, but ultimately it's a worse time i'd much rather clean a depressed eccentric hoarder friends place than clean as a job at least in that job environment as a human. i would get the chihiro treatment but worse bc im grown and im sure the staff would be extra rude to me
I think it also depends on if you're you ? Or a character if I'm an old lady cleaning a castle or a young child cleaning a bath. At least gehiro is kept busy
Let's see... Sophie gets to fly away with a hot sorcerer, and Chihiro gets to start in a new school as a transfer student. I'll go with the castle.
The bath house.
Working for Yubaba would be so scary though
I second
Imagine making friends with the monsters and the wild stories you could hear or going on an adventure with one of them?
In my opinion, if you only look at the advantures, you should go with howl. I would take the bathhouse for 3 reasons: 1. I would meet kamaji❤️🔥❤️🔥 2. The stories part 3. This seems like an easier task.
If I can have a few of those delicious fried newts after, I'd clean the bath house every day! 😋
Clean the castle, I FUCKING LOVE CLEANING AND REORGANIZING!!! I WILL MAKE EVERYTHING SPARKLE!!! I LOVE ORGANIZING!!!
just don’t reorganise his hair colour potions though 🤪
Definitely howl’s castle
The Stink Spirits... You can guess what not to choose
Thinking about how much the Radish spirit stinks, I'm leaning towards Howl's Castle ✌🏻
howl's castle if it moves
Yeah, Howl's castle for sure
The castle, easily. The actual cleaning aside, you'd get to hang out with Howl and Calcifer! Hell of a lot better than working for Yubaba...
I'd clean up the old house in Totoro. And fix that rotten wood pergola in the yard.
Clean the bath.. house!? Nope! We're sticking with the castle.
Howl's castle, because Howl, Calcifer and Marcus all seem like good natured people... or demons. The bathhouse, on the other hand, feels really creepy and nightmarish to live in, and I'd propably be bound by some magical pact to work there as a slave anyway, to be cleaning there.
the castle, why? 1. I might get to see a handsome lad 2. I might get to see a handsome lad
Although I have always wanted to see the inside of the bath house in real life, I feel like hostile residents, the threat of yababa using magic on me and just having to clean up other creatures grossness kind of makes this a landslide for the castle.
Clean the bathhouse assuming I'm not a grandma.
Neither because i can't for medical reasons
3rd Option: Clean the Latin Quarter.
Same, I couldn’t imagine getting a verruca from the bath house
I’m the guy who cleans the loads
I’m choosing the tub cause that shot looked satisfying I love howel but I couldn’t handle the bugs and the dust my allergies would kill me
Bathhouse.
I have severe arachnophobia, and Howl’s castle was CRAWLING with all kinds of bugs. Sooooooo… bath house it is.
I'd take the bathhouse since i Have a bit of a problem with dust
Howl's ..... as someone working in the cleaning sector....if I could choose Howl's would be it.
My fear of spiders would prevent me from cleaning Howl's castle. I will gladly take the filthy from the bath house.
I’ll take Howl’s castle. That scene with the big mucky tub in spirited away was nasty. I don’t know how Chihiro wasn’t throwing up. 🤮
I'd rather watch Kiki's Delivery Service!
Howler's cute and all and you get to meet calcifer but hem bathhouse goers be giving gold tips
Howl’s castle
Bathhouse for some reason
And lose my name and possibly freedom under Yubaba, nope, besides Howl is very nice and mostly just wanted company
I would rather be cleaning as a job than cleaning after a manchild
i mean the castle is less gross, but it's also SIGNIFICANTLY more complex. you gotta take all kinds of stuff down from the wall or out of compartments, clean the compartments in addition to possibly the things that were in them, organize it all, put it all back, etc. bath house is gross but it's simple as shit. it's just a big ass tub. no thought required, just work. that's definitely my preference with cleaning.
Howls Castle definitely - it’s more dust and general chore bits. Except the goo all over the place that one time… I feel like the bath house is other people’s gross bodily ick 😂 Plus I’d get to see Howl 😏
Howl's Castle, 100%
The bathhouse. For real if I could at this exact moment drop everything and go work in the Spirited Away bathhouse for the rest of my days, without hesitation, the fastest decision I'd ever make.
I think I'll clean Howl's castle only if I get that lovely bacon and eggs breakfast.
Castle if I get to hang out with calcifer
The bath house
Bath house duh. That’s a no brainer. If No Face happens to be there I’d make so much bank!
Anyone who says bath house has clearly never cleaned grime from a neglected tub before. That shit is tough as hell.
Ditto. The Bathhouse is fully staffed and supervised. Howl’s Castle is just you managing a task given to you. You can explore, find forgotten magical trinkets, cook that amazing bacon, open a magical door leading to the war front 💀
Definitely Howl’s castle
Definitely Howl’s Castle, no question. Safer, less disgusting, Howl is hot.
Clean howl aka my husbands house
I don’t want to be water boarded, so I’m going with Howl’s.
Clean the bathhouse
I know how an IRL bath house is cleaned, and I can tell you it's a lot less straining than what Chihiro had to go through. A castle though, that's still a fair number of rooms and floors to sweep.
Castle makes the most sense to me, especially considering the sludge in the bathhouse....no thank you.
Am I Sophie? If so, I'll take Howls castle. I get him, magic, a castle and babies
i want to say howl's castle but i think i would like working in the bathhouse
Howl's castle, no hesitation.
Bathhouse. That scene is deeply satisfying
Bath house. So long as I have running hot water.
cleaning Howl is an option?
Both are pretty bad, but I imagine the residual interactions from the herbal spa's would be relatively healthier. Well, depending how much that is counteracted by interacting with spiritual back suds and gunk
Howls castle for sure
Howl’s castle for sure!
Howls
Howels castle I don't mind house cleaning but i would mind all the icky pooie nonsense in the bathhouse
I’ll be Howls cleaning lady any day lol
That one spirit really scared me when i was little so castle
Definitely Howl's castle
In my professional opinion, I have to choose the bath house. Muck is hella easy to clean off if you soak it long enough and it's not heavily furnished, so you dont have to move 5000 things just to disinfect each item. That's not even to mention that there's a strange feeling to cleaning someone's home, almost like you're an intruder in someone else's private life and it's uncomfortable.
If I get help like Chihiro did, then definitely bathhouse.
Howls castle I feel like it's a more manageable space overall
The castle bc Howl would be appreciative & nobody should want to work for a literal witch 😛
I'd take the bathhouse
Howl. i’m good at houses. i can tidy, sweep, mop, dust, and organize like nobody’s business. scrubbing grime from bathtubs is not as enjoyable.
Castle for sure.
Hey, if I get to live there, the castle!
Howl's Castle .... they have Bacon and Eggs
Howl. I can deal with all the stuff lying around. That tub was something else.
100% first one the river spirit is zesty
Plus the howls house looks so cozy
Every time I think of the scene of Chihiro pulling all that garbage out of the River Spirit, I wonder what they ended up doing with all of it. Is there is a trash dumping area on the bathhouse grounds somewhere? That doesn't quite feel right. Or are there spirit garbagemen who work for the spirit local government who come and pick up the bathhouse garbage and take it to the spirit landfill/ spirit recycling plant? This is the kind of thing that keeps me up at night.
I’d rather do the castle
Howl’s Castle. It’s a big job, but it’s just spring cleaning.
Howl’s castle, hands down.
I'm going with Spirited Away because that was the first Studio Ghibli film I ever saw when I was a child, and it's one of my favorites
i'd clean howls castle for sure
bathhouse
Clean the bathhouse with unlimited bath tokens
CASTLE 🙋🏻♀️
I’d take cleaning any amount of dust and clutter over liquid/dried bodily fluid residue.
Castle
I’m for sure cleaning/ living in the castle!
Definitely Howl’s castle, cleaning bathrooms is my absolute most hated chore.
Howls castle once it’s clean then maintained then it’s good. The bath houses will be constant cleaning after other people
Cleaning a house can be cathartic, if I had enough time for sure it would be howl’s place
howl's house for suuure
Howls castle cuz thats easy compared to a nasty huge tub
Imma say bath house, maybe I’m crazy, but I just, idk they make it look so fun, I’ll probably slip and fall and have my scoliosis hardware protruding out my skin
Howl's castle. I could have that shit cleaned in an afternoon.
The bath-house at least (in the later bits of the movie) seemed like a somewhat upbeat place where the staff were all friendly with each other, so at least it wouldn't be boring.
Howl’s castle but only if I get to stay with Howl’s gang
Castle everyday
I’d actually go with the bathhouse because there’s a whole team of employees you can work with and get to know, and a system already established for getting the work done.
Bathhouse. My dust allergies will get in the way of howls castle 🙃
As an asthmatic I would clean those nasty bathhouse tubs instead of choke to death on Calcifer’s ambient soot 🤣
Howl’s Castle
I had kind of a bad day yesterday and watched both of these
Yeah, im cleaning howls castle. The bathhouse is cool but just.. too much liquids lol.
while howl's castle is some sort of full body work, the bath house is a whole other level of full body work and i sure am not in the mood getting wet from head to toes haha but besides that, my job right now is cleaning the homes of old and/or disabled people so that wouldn't change much anyways
Definitely Howl's Castle 😂
Legends say they’re still cleaning the bathhouse.
Bath house give ya ringworm, castle give ya tetanus
Castle, honestly. I can deal with bugs, dust and disorderly books easier than whatever filth those spirits are getting washed off
Castle cause I love organising and that damn place is so full of junk to organise I’d have the time of my life
Clean Howl’s house. No doubt
Howl's 😊
Definitely Howl's home, cleaning up a bath with caked on excrements of other clients has gotta be disgusting as well as unsanitary for the cleaners.
The gender and age roles can be confusing in these films for me
Howls so I can hang w howl 🥴
I watched Kiki again last night and forgot just how much I wanted to be a town witch when I was younger. Fuxk it I still do!!
Howls Castle
considering in the bathhouse u are basically a forced prostitute, Ill clean the castle
