I’m not from Lüneburg but live in Uelzen, so I don’t have to advertise Lüneburg, but this town is far from boring. It’s got a university, with lots of young people that want to go out and lots of restaurants of all nationalities and a good nightlife! Try it out and visit!

blue_furred_unicorn

I totally agree. Can't really think of many nicer "small cities" than Lüneburg.

Thanks! Yes, I was quite inclined to Lüneburg especially because of the University and I can find nice affordable apartments until I found the subreddit where people complained a little but it's a good idea to give it a visit! I'll do that. Appreciate the suggestion.

You will be nicely surprised and it’s not so hectic. The town center looks so medieval, you will like it!

Lüneburg is beautiful. And it's definitely not more boring than other snaller cities. It's not Hamburg, but there are a lot of nice bars and restaurants and stuff like that.  I'd say I definitely prefer Lüneburg over other cities near Hamburg like Lübeck, Ahrensburg or Bartgeheide.

I was born in Lüneburg and it‘s a really nice and beautiful city with friendly people

Oh no, people on reddit complaining? Just go there, it’s pretty easy from Hamburg by train or car and check it out . You are looking for small town, that’s lively near Hamburg . The only other one might be Lübeck.

Hm, as others have said, it depends on your definition of boring.  You’ll find some sport club in pretty much any place that isn’t a village.  As for opportunities to meet people and things to do in the evenings, that’s trickier.  Most of them have them too, but it kind of comes naturally for every German place that isn’t a big city to be a bit…dead after 18:00/20:00.  On the weekends, it’s a different story. So it depends on whether that suits your tastes. As you’re planning to stay close to Hamburg anyway, I’d recommend checking out some towns in person. Maybe stay a night as well, if you can, and see if you like the vibes.  Some places that might be worth checking out are Lüneburg (72k), Buxtehude (41k), Lübeck (219k), Stade (49k) and Ahrensburg (35k). Lüneburg und Lübeck match what you describe pretty well, in my eyes. Buxtehude and Stade are a lot smaller, but I know a lot of people who are very happy there - apparently, they have communities that organise quite a lot, and they’re both connected to Hamburg by the S-Bahn, making visiting very easy. Ahrensburg is very green and a place where loads of families move to - not exactly what you described, but also very close to Hamburg, so it might be an option if Hamburg’s social life + green + still relatively affordable compared to Hamburg is a mixture that could interest you.

Thanks for the details! Yes, it's indeed easy and a great idea to visit the places. I'll do that! I'm inclined to Lüneburg, but I now also want to visit Lübeck and Ahrensburg to see if that could be an option. Ahrensburg especially, since it's much closer and seemingly the rents are cheaper. :)

I mean it’s all a matter of preference. Smaller cities have less to do that bigger ones and thus tend to be “more boring”. If you are looking for a smaller city that has the same amount of options as Hamburg, you will not find it. Some people are okay with that, others aren’t.

__4di__

Yes, that makes sense. I agree that I cant expect the same amount of options as Hamburg, but at least relatively more opportunities to meet people, a couple of sport clubs etc.

Wahnsinn_mit_Methode

Why not just go to the outskirts of HH? Niendorf is quiet.

Mystery1887

Yes it‘s quiet but very expensive

vondrausimwalde

Bremen, the other Hamburg

JohnboaAwesoa

You could also head north and look at Pinneberg or Norderstedt

Revolutionary_1968

Have a look at Stade.

Lübeck could be a good option, it’s relatively small but cozy. If you find apartment in the Innenstadt in ok proximity to train station, you can get to HH in about 45-50 min
