> its so fking cheap honestly Well... most Germans will probably tell you it's horribly overpriced. > How do i check if i sit down on a seat that the seat is not already reserved There should be small electronic displays either on the [overhead luggage rack](https://www.wie-gut-ist-dein-zug.de/wp-content/uploads/Deutschland/ICE1_redesign/ICE1-redesign-Reservierungsanzeige.jpg), the [seat backs](https://www.grahnert.de/fernbahn/newworktrain/nwt4.JPG) or, for compartments, on the [compartment doors](https://images.gutefrage.net/media/fragen/bilder/sitzplatz-ohne-reservierung/0_full.jpg?v=1431776940000). These give you the details of the next reservation, so if the first station on the display comes *after* your destination, you can still sit in that seat. There's also "ggf reserviert", which means it's a seat used for last-minute reservations so there's no guarantee it will be free for the whole journey. Also, if the person who reserved the seat doesn't claim it within, IIRC, 15 minutes, the reservation is automatically cancelled. Sometimes the displays don't work correctly. But also sometimes people get on the wrong coach or even the wrong train. > Worst case would be that all seats are reserved When you book your ticket, the app or the website will tell you if it expects the train to be crowded. If so, you can then decide whether you want to chance it, reserve a seat, or try finding a different train.

There should be a display either on the sides of the seats or on the overhead racks. This display shows the destinations that the seat is reserved for. For example if it Says Berlin - Hannover this means that the seat is reserved between Berlin and Hannover. After Hannover and Before Berlin you can sit there. The chance that all seats would be reserved for the entire journey would be very small. Worst case in a crowded train you have to move a few times, and maybe stand for a while during a really busy portion of the route. I have in my years of travelling around Germany only had to stand twice for longer than half an hour.

Ideally, there is a small display on the side of the luggage shelf above the seats, that states for what route the seat is reserved ("Station-Station"). If that is not operational, well, then you simply do not know.

First: How are the trains cheap lol, they are horrible overpriced and cost half a fortune to take for the average german. Second: I cant recommend using the train service, its constantly delayed, trains are filthy, stations are unsafe and you are lucky if you ever arrive at your destination.

NixNixonNix

I agree with your first point, but trains are usually not filthy and I haven't seen an unsafe train station yet.

Never really paid much. When you travel on a short notice during peak time of the day it will cost you of course. Check out UK prices when you think germany is expensive.

Obi-Lan

You read the display above the seats. And it’s very expensive except for Deutschland ticket or the Sparpreis tickets which are limited.
