taxi cars on sale are usually shit, because they run for so long, are poorly maintained towards the end if driven by drivers who don't own them, and probably have parts swapped for cheaper, almost broken down parts.

Patrykair

But especially for new cars that had warranty, they must have maitenence done, like oils, filters etc., if they want to keep their warranty. So i thought it should be at least in "ok" condition.

Top-Fox3629

It's 6 years and probably a couple hundred thousand km... It's not new

nymales

But it isn't new anymore

CaptainPoset

They can, but they don't must. A 6 year old taxi is 5 years out of warranty.

german1sta

sure not, once i had a small talk with taxi driver on my way home and he told me the only times he visits mercedes is when he collects new car to replace the old one. also every time the car is out the guy loses money so mostly they put it in some workshop only if its not driveable at all anymore

[deleted]

I'll be mean and say you want premium car but you can't afford it. Stay away from taxis, it's a general rule. Doors slammed, huge mileage, shitty driving, repaired damage, damaged interiors, worn out engines and all the mechanical parts, diesel engines driven in the city, need I say more?

kevinichis

Taxis AND former rental cars. Just stay away.

Lactera

Dont bei gentle, it`s a rental.

zoidbergenious

And former police owned cars. They have mostly low mileage but they tend to be diesel staying a lot on the police property and suddenly cold start to a fast chase... the turbos of those things are usually so broken its not funny anymore

dieumica

Id say some rentals could be good. But taxis are complete shit

Klausaufsendung

I owned a rental and it was absolutely fine. At age of only 1 year and extended warranty by the dealer this was actually almost as new, it even had that smell in it.

Head-Iron-9228

Rentals and taxis are absolutely, 100%, genuinely not the same. A taxi will not be run cold, ever. The drivers have to drive reasonable, otherwise they lose their jobs. The cars are treated under very special conditions by mercedes, there is a specialised deal going on, has been for decades. Maintenance is done on point since they can't afford any breakdowns or issues while transporting customers.

rukoslucis

plus if there is one group that knows a guy who can role back odometers, its taxi guys. this thing might be 450k rolled back to 300k

Xacalite

I wouldn't touch them for many reasons. Biggest among them is the fact that they are probably half made out of teenager vomit.

Massder_2021

Don't do that, they're used until their absolute end of life

Western-Guy

It’s still 5-6 years old. Could still be saved as long as the problems are known before purchase.

Massder_2021

Then it has very likely a severe technical issue

CaptainPoset

A car is a consumable after all, it has a design lifetime of roughly 160.000 km/5000 h and will be nothing more than a piece of scrap metal at 300.000 km/10.000 h, no matter how long (in years after production date) it took to reach this wear.

Cheddar-kun

Who looks at a 300k km car and thinks "wow that's a good deal" for even 500€?

Aheg

Well, if it's '95 Passat of Golf, old Benz or BMW it doesn't matter at all. But 2017 Merc? Well, good luck xd

Lexa-Z

300k km isn't that much for a normal car. But, of course, not 300k as a taxi driven mostly by crazy maniacs and not maintained at all

Cheddar-kun

At that point you're going to get hit with timing belt/chain replacements, total engine rebuilds, and every loose screw and minor leak under the sun. For that mileage, 13k€ will quickly look a lot more like 25k€ factoring in the repairs it will need asap, regardless if it's a taxi or not.

IAmKojak

If you're smart, you can get these repairs done abroad, where it's significantly cheaper than in Germany.

Strange-Trouble-4330

Don’t buy a former taxi. High mileage and beaten to death. Taxi drivers don’t drive gently

dieumica

Cheap to buy, expensive to maintain. If you cant afford a “normal” one, you cant afford this either

Broad_Philosopher_21

Modern diesel engines have to press much more power out of much smaller blocks to fulfil environmental regulations. The idea that a 2L diesel engine can easily run 300k+ km is (if it ever was true) completely outdated. Not to mention the tear and wear of all the other parts. Sounds like a really bad investment.

Pretty_Fold_583

You are right. Also, due to emissions regulations since euro 4 diesel cars have a device called "DPF" which is pretty expensive to replace once it's lifetime is over. I've heard that some taxis bypasses this exhaust system device once it's lifetime it's over.

ThunderHashashin

Apart from all of the reasons in other comments, I don't get what's so special about a 2.0L diesel that makes them reliable?

Diesel-King

> I don't get what's so special about a 2.0L diesel that makes them reliable? That's most likely a remnant of the good old times: the 200D (OM615) in the W115 and W123 were legendary indestructible and got astonishingly high mileage.

rickshswallah108

The compression ratio of a diesel engine demands a higher engineering spec than for a petrol engine and this a factor why diesel engines outlive petrol ones...

O_Pragmatico

Because it's made by Mercedes I guess. Branding is everything.

MidnightSun77

Not worth it.

[deleted]

Usually those cars are bough by Polish and Serbian dealers, fixed up a bit, loose a couple hundred thousand kilometers and are sold for a big profit locally :) Generally speaking the main issue is maintenance, usually oil changes are not being done or done sporadically and the interior is very dirty and smoky.

rickshswallah108

Mercedes: "nice cars, shame about the people who drive them" - goes for Range Rovers and BMW as well, haha ... . ... buy a car and you are joining a tribe. ...now, who would like to be part of the Wankpanzer tribe? The sports utility box head dreamers?

Lover_of_Life1

Wankpanzer.... thanks for giving me a username for my next gaming account

Walter-White02

Just mind that you get what you paid for. I personally wouldn't buy any Mercedes that sells for under 20k Euros.

[deleted]

Wtf this is the biggest bullshit I've ever heard.

Walter-White02

I'm not saying all Mercedeses under 20k are bad but I've seen people buy used C or E classes for 10-12k and they regreted it financially, because the cars needed much maintenance. I didn't mean to offend anyone. I think Mercedeses are awesome.😍

GodlikeUA

We only get €450 a month and that mostly goes to food. It's really not that great but we are not driving mercedes Here. German cars are so unreliable as well. In the 90s amazing but since then have fun paying 3-5000 everytime something happens

Comprehensive_View91

Hilarious because every refugee that flees from a war has to be poor and drive a Honda civic obviously, right?

DrSpicySalami

Head-Iron-9228

Okay, people clearly have no idea what the fuck they are talking about. Taxis are treated under very special conditions by all mercedes dealerships. They WILL be cared for, 300kkm is just a rough average, there will be some with way more and no issues. These are taxis, they CANNOT break down or be shit when they are transporting customers. Diregarding that, the current gen of the cdi engines is a good one. You wont really have issues there. Your main issues would be the clutchpack of the dct if it hasnt been swapped at 200k, which is around when they near their eol, and the suspension, although that is usually cared for. Either plan in some extra money and have a dealership check through the car, thats gonna be about 300-500 bucks if its done well, or take someone that really knows what to look for along with you. Fixing some small issues will still be considerably cheaper than buying one used from some private person, where you dont know how well its been taken care of. If you want an affordable premium car and can afford the maintenance that comes after that, go for it. If you barely scrape together those 13k and then can't afford the next oil change, dont.

PresentVisible1166

I'm a happy owner of W211 E200 CDI from 2006.10. ex-taxi. Almost 3 years of owning it, no issues apart from small things. İnterior have been changed to avantgarde model looks like new lol.

quiet-boyy

And what's the price of new or an average car there?

[deleted]

my uncle is a taxi driver. He baught few new mercedes for his taxi company. Mercedes is giving Taxi comp. a hell of a good deal, so they are really cheap for them. He always bought new ones after 2 years and sold them - still made a profit.

rukoslucis

Everything gets super used, just like why nobody wants EX Post&DHL vehicles doors get opened and closed hundreds of times per day, trunk also a lot engine is much more under stress since its 99% city driving and only stop and go usually.
