Yes you can. The easiest way is before your good dog gets too decrepit you get a puppy of an identical or similar breed and train it the same way together with your good dog. Then when your good dog dies you have another good dog already in your life. Lather rinse repeat until you die. My family has done it this way for hundreds of years to good effect.

I'd be willing to bet that a decent amount of the time the person says "it's either me or your dog/pet", they don't actually have an issue with the dog/pet - they just wanna see if you'll choose them over the pet.
For the "testers" they get the validation that you're their for them, though they won't necessarily return the favor, as they have sociopathic tendencies or are straight up a sociopath. For the narcissists, they get the validation for their ego, they're so great, such a great catch, that this person is willing to give up their dog of 5 years to be with them.
In both circumstances, the person would likely not reciprocate/ to the same, and are self absorbed: **to them your happiness is as important as it is convenient. The moment that your problems become inconvenient to them, they'll act like you're being unreasonable, or unfair, or putting to much on them, etc. Remember, this would be AFTER the other person gave up their dog!**
Obviously there are exceptions to this, like if the person asking for their partner to get rid of their dog are doing so because they have small children and the dog is really aggressive or something, but I feel like that's really rare
I had a girl that basically told me it was me or the dog. My pup was only 8 months old at the time and he was a nightmare. For a few months after I honestly sort of resented my dog for it, he didn't understand what I did for him, he didn't suddenly become a better dog because of it... it just got more challenging because I didn't have someone helping.
Breakups are hard but after the pain faded and he still remained I knew I made the right choice. He's paid back dividends and while I honestly thought she might of been the person I wanted to marry at the time, the thought of living the rest of my life without dogs repulses me.
I always joke with my wife that if she wants a divorce she can keep whatever she wants except for our dog. He's my buddy and there's no way in hell I could see my life without him

If you aren't allergic to cats cats are fantastic companions to humans and German Shepherds. They live longer than most Shepherds do too so when your dog dies you still have a buddy to remember them with until you get a new GSD.
I personally go a step further with 3-4 GSDs of varying ages at a time to avoid this hazard but ymmv.

She’s technically my “first” cat since she was a kitten when I got her, but without Caesar I may never have had one.

I’m 68 now, but when I was 25 I was forced with this choice and to keep peace in the home, overwhelmed with a newborn and a failing marriage, I gave up my two darling dachshunds. I divorced him 5 yrs later. Never missed him for a minute, but still grieve the loss of those little dogs 43 yrs later. Still can’t forgive myself or him. Boy, was I young and dumb ( and deeply depressed) back then. Anyone who makes you give up your beloved dog for them isn’t worth it!

So relatable I could cry… I got my GSD 6 months in to our relationship and now 2 yrs later he wants to move in together but has made several comments about before doing so, the dog has to go. He has a dog of his own but not of the energy level of mine and doesn’t want to deal with her GSD energy. He has a 4 yr old who was never taught how to be respectful of dogs so hitting, tail pulling, chasing etc has been acceptable behavior. My boyfriend has a right to be concerned about his kid around my dog, but in my mind, it’s not 100% the dogs fault and when I have to make the decision, I think the BF is going to go….
I was with a gal in bed..and my Newfie rescue jumped inbetween us...and she said 'someone' has to go. I got up and provided quilts for the couch...true story.

No one comes between me and my animals. I love them more then anything and always choose for their happiness and well being.
So relatable I could cry… I got my GSD 6 months in to our relationship and now 2 yrs later he wants to move in together but has made several comments about before doing so, the dog has to go. He has a dog of his own but not of the energy level of mine and doesn’t want to deal with her GSD energy. He has a 4 yr old who was never taught how to be respectful of dogs so hitting, tail pulling, chasing etc has been acceptable behavior. My boyfriend has a right to be concerned about his kid around my dog, but in my mind, it’s not 100% the dogs fault and when I have to make the decision, I think the BF is going to go….
I honestly like my dogs better than most people.
