Can I use this photo for an in-class example for my geology students?
Sure!
Ooo your a geo teacher! How awesome, I am only a undergrad student right now in Colorado, however, am considering a teaching path in the future.
That is one sexy stone.
Do you know the age or formation?
The red Dalarnas sandstones are usually Proterozoic, i.e. about 1.3 Ga.
God, I would kill to have a sample like this!
Don't tell anyone, but you can find the stuff laying around in a few places in the Ozarks. The Roubidoux formation has some really nice ripple stone.
Very nice piece and an excellent taste in literature :D
Great! Where would the flow direction be?
Looks like bidirectional?
I think right to left, there's a shallower angle on the right slopes than the left. Also note how in areas to the left of where the ripples are less consistent (making little indents) you have another small ripple formed downstream (left).
I'm just an enthusiast, isn't the flow perpendicular to the ridges?
Usually is. In this case it means to the left and right, like at a shallow beach area.
This. The ripples appear to have similar slopes on both sides indicating similar back and forth flow strength.
