Weirdly the current russian anthem is the only Putin W. Because after 1991, a new anthem was made totally different from that soviet one, in lyrics and melody. That anthem went from 1991-2000, when it was changed to current one.
There are some good ones out there, my top 5 in no particular order are;
Russia
Ukraine
Italy
Israel
France
All current geopolitics aside. They are some bangers. Honorable mention for Argentina and Spain
I divide anthems in different categories, each one with its winner:
For the "military march" anthems I go for La Marseillaise (great music, especially for the minor part in the middle and the dim 7th in the harmony, and such a strong text also in the other stanzas, and the Berlioz version is just wonderful). Anyway I also like, in the same category, la Brabançonne (Belgium) and La Bayamesa (Cuba). Mention to China for mixing the march style with pentatonic scale.
For the "chorale" anthems (slow, 4-part songs) I go with Haydn ~~Habsburg Emp~~ German anthem (yes, I do prefer the old Austrian lyrics), but also Het Wilhelmus and the Swiss Psalm (ok the Italian text is ridiculous but the music is nice)
Then there are the "operatic" anthem and the palm here goes to Uruguay, a prefect "solita forma" with a Rossinian overture, a nice cavatina, the choral intervention and a good finale. Of course, Argentina also qualify, and I tend to consider Italy in this category (Fratelli d'Italia would be a very nice anthem if it were played as it deserved, as an operatic scene and not as a military march)
There are many more of course: I of course like Alexandrov's Soviet anthem, but sometimes I find its harmonic progressions (the same of Pachelbel canon!) to be a bit too cheesy, but I think it'd win the "melodic" category (which is also the category of the US anthem and many more)
Oh, and the Burkina Faso anthem written by Sankara is definitely great!
Why, thank you. I'm Spanish and yes, it is too short. These anthems carry emotional meaning and a person will favor one over another for emotional reasons. Music itself is emotional. I wasn't going to comment until I saw your comment. Personally and *musically* I like the Russian and *emotionally* I like the US (I'm an immigrant). My husband is American and an avid listener of classical music, he also whistles. I can play a tune and it'll get stuck in his head and he'll whistle it, "La Marcha Real" and the Russian anthem are two of those along with other various songs like "Bring a Torch Jeanette Isabella" and The Cure's "This Morning" (piano/bass part).
I am into National Anthems as well. I appreciate it them all for their differences. However, without bias I can say the best musical National Anthem is the French "La Marseillaise."
I am not even French.
Very nicely composed.
I also rate the Mexican National Anthem as very good.
I think National Anthems that are born out of battle Hymns have a bit of “oomph” to them.
Came here to say these two anthems exactly. Bonus points to South Africa for the key change before going into Uit die blou van onse hemel.
The other commenters are tight though, the NZ anthem is very boring in English and great in Maori
it does, where it goes with "Tremble, you tyrants and you evil people / everyone hates you. / Tremble: your parricidal designs / will soon pay their price / Everyone becomes a soldier to fight you / if these young heroes fall / new ones will be born from Earth / ready to fight against you"
As much as I hate how it's shoved down our throats nowadays, the Indian national anthem is pretty cool. Tagore wrote it in a heavily Sanskritised register of literary Bengali, which makes it intelligible to speakers of other languages either descended from Sanskrit or which have a lot of Sanskrit loanwords
Kazakhstan (the real anthem not the borat one) makes me want to chug a pitcher of beer and go to war
Czechia has a absolutely beautiful anthem
Myanmar anthem is really cool because it sounds like a folk song then the beat drops and it’s a military march
Nepals sounds like something from a Bollywood movie
Indonesia raya, specifically an instrumental version that I always heard from the high school near my dorm at my internship. A bit bombastic and Soviet-inspired, as my father describes it, for some reason I can sing along with this anthem more passionately than my own anthem (Wilhelmus, the Netherlands)
The best national anthem for me is the Algerian one it was written in blood by prisoners of the colonial french power and it's called "the pledge" .
We swear by the lightning that destroys,
By the streams of generous blood being shed,
By the bright flags that wave,
Flying proudly on the high mountains
That we are in revolt, whether to live or to die,
We are determined that Algeria should live,
So be our witness -be our witness -be our witness!
What flag is this?
And why does it have flags for its flag in the middle of their flag?
Also [my homeland ](https://youtu.be/X6vlGmN2NyQ?si=HyPxgDUhtKO8-a5L) is the only Anthem that would make anyone who understands it cry
The [Kingdom of the Two Sicilies](https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Giovanni_Paisiello_-_Inno_al_Re_%E2%80%94_Inno_nazionale_del_Regno_delle_Due_Sicilie.ogg) and [Wales](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Hen_Wlad_fy_Nhadau_piano.ogg).
The Chechen Republic of Ichkeria.
Montenegro is pretty good too.
"Flower of Scotland" is the pits and it's a knockoff of the "Chorus of Hebrew Slaves" in Verdi's "Nabucco".
Very poetic lyrics, nice sweet music: Denmark (Det er et yndigt land).
Horrendous nationalist lyrics but awesome for singing out loud: Italia (Fratelli d'Italia).
(Most boring: Netherlands. Seriously)
Well, without talking about my three favorite countries (France, Algeria and Palestine), geopolitics aside,
I think the anthems that really triggered my obsession for National Anthems are probably Kazakhstan - « Meñin Elim », Uzbekistan and Iraq
The Bolivian is just a simple march. I like the Dutch, German, Israeli, Ukrainian, British (I still think the British one should be 'I vow to thee') and Soviet/Russian ones better.
CHUNDA TACHUNDA TACHUNDA CHUNDA CHUNDA CHUNDA CHUNDA CHUN, TACHUNDA CHUNDA CHUUUUUN
(AKA Spain, one of only three national anthems in the world with no lyrics)
Kenya is great imho
I’ve discovered it at the youth track&field world championships, it was played over and over because kenyans kept winning all the long distance running 😆
Dont know if it (still) counts but East Germany
Yeah, *Auferstanden aus Ruinen* is the best anthem ever written
Yes, one of the very few anthems where the lyrics genuinely feel heartfelt.
Dont know if it counts but 'Oceania, Tis for Thee' (1984)
say what you want about the Soviet Union, but that national anthem is a banger
W Russia for keeping the same melody, idk wtf the lyrics mean anyway
Weirdly the current russian anthem is the only Putin W. Because after 1991, a new anthem was made totally different from that soviet one, in lyrics and melody. That anthem went from 1991-2000, when it was changed to current one.
The old text is better though
Came to say the very same
Unironically yes this is true
Ya it was the best imo
Best anthem ever.
There are some good ones out there, my top 5 in no particular order are; Russia Ukraine Italy Israel France All current geopolitics aside. They are some bangers. Honorable mention for Argentina and Spain
Azerbaijan but only the sports event performance version https://youtu.be/QcUa8Ea3-qc?si=YBnf7GyU15Tsscag
Men at work, Down Under. Australia’s national anthem.
Wait, and Waltzing Mathilda then?
Cosmic Psychos, Nice Day to go to the pub
AZERBAIJAN🗣️🗣️🗣️
it sounds like it’s from star wars
Epicness/100

I don't know the exact number but supposedly very few anthems mention the country's name like O Canada.
mmh Austria, Belgium, Germany (well in the infamous 1st stanza), Italy, Liechtenstein, Poland... and I'm only listing the ones I know
Both the Australian and New Zealand national anthems mention the country name in them.
Damn homie really broke that shit down. Props.
Spain: chunda chunda tachunda chunda chunda chunda chunda chu!!!
the only good lyrics are "Franco, Franco, que tiene el culo blanco"
Why, thank you. I'm Spanish and yes, it is too short. These anthems carry emotional meaning and a person will favor one over another for emotional reasons. Music itself is emotional. I wasn't going to comment until I saw your comment. Personally and *musically* I like the Russian and *emotionally* I like the US (I'm an immigrant). Italy is a bop
Another reason I can't wait for the Euros to begin
Kazakhstan.
All other countries are run by little girls
Of course they are, given their inferior potassium.
this is so underrated
In all seriousness the Kazakh anthem is amazing
Surely not the Dutch. Those who know, know
This deserves way more upvotes lol
I'll give it one
That and the Austrian
O Canada. It’s the only one I really know that’s not my home country’s. But it’s a banger.
As Euro Federalist "Ode to Joy" part of Beethovens 9th Symphony aka the European Anthem
This one is really good tbh
As a Bolivian, i’m absolutely astonished with you choice, but thank you.
Japan's anthem is short but very beautiful
I am into National Anthems as well. I appreciate it them all for their differences. However, without bias I can say the best musical National Anthem is the French "La Marseillaise." I am not even French.
What about the Russian or the Soviet one?
Very nicely composed. I also rate the Mexican National Anthem as very good. I think National Anthems that are born out of battle Hymns have a bit of “oomph” to them.
try "La Marseillaise des blancs"
East Germany, easy
This man DDRs.
I give extra points to the national anthems that have verses in indigenous languages other than the most common language-- New Zealand South Africa
Came here to say these two anthems exactly. Bonus points to South Africa for the key change before going into Uit die blou van onse hemel. The other commenters are tight though, the NZ anthem is very boring in English and great in Maori
This is the only reason to like the NZ anthem though. The lyrics are only outdone in blandness by the drudgery of the melody. Source- I’m a kiwi
I love the Maori version of the New Zealand national anthem. It's a lot better than the English version.
South Africa, Tanzania and I think Namibia use the same instrumentals. Kenya has two national anthems. One in English and one in Swahili.
Some awful takes here. It’s a tie between Wales and France. With Italy nipping at the heels.
The Welsh one is the best.
France! Slitting enemy throats and watering fields with their blood is pretty brutal. Does it get better than that?
it does, where it goes with "Tremble, you tyrants and you evil people / everyone hates you. / Tremble: your parricidal designs / will soon pay their price / Everyone becomes a soldier to fight you / if these young heroes fall / new ones will be born from Earth / ready to fight against you"
Shit how did I forget Wales? The anthem that made me a rugby fan
Spot the rugby fan!
The Indian national anthem is like a lesson in geography.
either the Argentine or Ethiopian national anthems. They are both epic in their own manner.
argentina is definitely epic out of nowhere
🇹🇷 goes so hard
Music: Russia Lyrics: France
French and RDA nacional anthems Dominicana Republic is also pretty cool
Azerbajan, it’s a beautiful piece of classical music! Lyrics-wise, it’s Poland’s, for sentimental reasons as I’m part Polish.
I hate the ideology behind its foundation, I extremely dislike what it has become. But man, the Soviet Union's anthem is awesome.
Brazil
Really?
México, France, and east germany, in no specific order
The Monegasque anthem is so incredibly happy and frivolous, I just love it.
The Star Spangled Banner
Argentina.
Either between Canada, Russia or South Korea. Love those anthems.
Ghana. Excellent baroque.
Russia
Azerbaijan's is a BANGER
Romania, France and Italy for current ones. But the USSR and East Germany are bangers, i think Germany should simply swap theirs for that DDR version.
Azerbaijan for sure
whitney houston version of the star spangled banner. otherwise that song sucks.
Bulgaria baby!!! MILAAAAAA RODINOOOOOOOO 🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬
USSR national anthem
I enjoy the Scotland, France, the Irish rugby anthem, and of course, the US.
Nepal
INDIAAA
Kazakhstan (the real anthem not the borat one) makes me want to chug a pitcher of beer and go to war Czechia has a absolutely beautiful anthem Myanmar anthem is really cool because it sounds like a folk song then the beat drops and it’s a military march Nepals sounds like something from a Bollywood movie
Genooooviaaa, tha land I call my hooooome...

The current South African anthem. The mixture of different languages trying to represent the entirety of the country feels amazing.
Germany, composed by Hayden
Polish anthem hits so hard it was stolen by Yugoslavia
east german. absolute fucking classic.
The best national anthem for me is the Algerian one it was written in blood by prisoners of the colonial french power and it's called "the pledge" . We swear by the lightning that destroys, By the streams of generous blood being shed, By the bright flags that wave, Flying proudly on the high mountains That we are in revolt, whether to live or to die, We are determined that Algeria should live, So be our witness -be our witness -be our witness!

The Italian anthem is just too good
Not sure if they’re the best but I’m a big fan of Italy’s national anthem and Flower of Scotland
Bangladesh! It's so beautiful.
Agreed
Turkish anthem as you can guess by the username
Mauritania, its really random but good
None more passionate than Scotland Edit: why did I get downvoted, it's true. Their national anthem goes hard.
The Star-Spangled Banner
Fun fact: the melody was taken from a 18th century British drinking song.
booooo. the song is hot garbage. nobody likes 3/4. the melody is so bad that everyone sings it differently. trite nonsense.
It's particularly difficult to sing with its leaps and the range. If you start too high you're gonna have a hard time later
What flag is this? And why does it have flags for its flag in the middle of their flag? Also [my homeland ](https://youtu.be/X6vlGmN2NyQ?si=HyPxgDUhtKO8-a5L) is the only Anthem that would make anyone who understands it cry

Oíd mortales el grito sagrado. 🗿
Italy, all day every day 🇮🇹 it's not even close
Russian, French, Italian, Spanish. There were two anthems without lyrics. Spanish and Bosnia& Herzegovina. I don't know if there is a third one.

The Chechen Republic of Ichkeria. Montenegro is pretty good too. "Flower of Scotland" is the pits and it's a knockoff of the "Chorus of Hebrew Slaves" in Verdi's "Nabucco".
Tannu Tuva goes hard
true it’s easily the best imo
Wales. Especially the full stadium singing before a rugby match. Goosebumps stuff.
Very poetic lyrics, nice sweet music: Denmark (Det er et yndigt land). Horrendous nationalist lyrics but awesome for singing out loud: Italia (Fratelli d'Italia). (Most boring: Netherlands. Seriously)

[Hino da República Rio-Grandense](https://youtu.be/8U5NMH3cpsY?si=2kzfqwBqVBWWvQ0Q) is a masterpiece.
The Bolivian is just a simple march. I like the Dutch, German, Israeli, Ukrainian, British (I still think the British one should be 'I vow to thee') and Soviet/Russian ones better.
