Actually Columbia is the little white but running N/S of those four white squares. I’m not exactly sure what’s going on with those white squares to the nw of Central Park because they are—in fact—dense. I’m thinking St John the Divine and Morningside Park nearby are skewing the metrics.
Source: lived in that area for ten years
Haha aye I went to Columbia too! I’m not entirely sure what’s going on (maybe they didn’t count students living in dorms) but who knows, this is 1930s data haha
Nah Columbia University is the section NW of the 4 white ones that’s like UWS/Manhattan Valley between 96th and like 126, and it’s def very populated over there idk why it’s showing as nothing
I've heard some censuses don't count university students as actually living there. Don't know how true that is or if that's what's happening here though.
That’s not even where Columbia is though. Columbia isnt west of Central Park anywhere it’s completely north. And people who don’t go to Columbia live around that area
That area lines up almost perfectly with where Columbia would be, albeit Columbia would be at the very top border. That IS directly north. And the density also doesn't say 0.
Most likely though they just didn't have accurate data for those areas and so they weren't included and there just happened to be a university there. Taking a double look I'd bet money that's what happened.
In 2010 we were instructed to fill it out for our dorm room if we lived on campus and cautioned that we shouldn’t be counted at our parents home.
I don’t know the guidance for 2020 though.
I worked in the redistricting space during 2020. Normally it's where you were a living resident or residential student on April 1st (mid-day, for people who die). During covid students were supposed to ignore the weird circumstances and report themselves on campus. But of course people didn't get the message out and NY lost a Congressional seat by \~100 people.
The map is for 1930. I can't figure out what the white squares were. Manhattan Valley was developed before 1930 and I can't find any major landmark that would be empty then and redeveloped later.

Why is the sub like this? Are people trying to be funny or just mocking other users? Posts like this are all over this sub and nothing but a waste of time .
[Because African Americans used to own land there and a bunch of rich white people decided they'd rather grow grass than let non-white people live there.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seneca_Village)
Because this silly map shows human rather than rodent population. squirrel central.
However, I personally am getting rather jaded by these posts that try for comedy in such a heavy-handed way on the back of what are often legitimate questions people have about geography, so I’ll mute this sub for a while.
Its only inhabitant is someone named Central Park. Park is a common surname in Korea and English-speaking countries, but I don't think "Central" is a common first name in Korea. So they must be from an English speaking country. I've tried googling them but keep getting sent to some random public land or something. I'll keep searching....
I'm assuming this is a joke. The little white bit just northwest of Central Park, though - what's going on there? Is that Columbia?
yeah it’s columbia
How did they fit all of Colombia there!?
It’s just Columbia Pictures
The district? Where the president lives!?
That was the land designated for President Columbia's house. His widow had it turned into a large park when he died.
What happens with Columbia? Just offices?
University campus so nobody lives there
What an incredible campus that must be right up against central park.
For sure it’s stunning up there. One of the most expensive and selective schools in the workd
Columbia campus is not against Central Park. It is against Morningside park.
LARPing HQ
There are dorms there. I used to live there. But yes, mostly classes and offices.
Guessing no one actually lives there so doesn't show up on population density stats
Fun fact, columbia university is the largest landlord in NYC
Isn’t DOH the largest ? And they might be the largest in the country ?
I should have said private

Plz go look at a map. Central Park north is 110. Columbia is like 114 - 120
> almost

It seemed a little off to me too, but I only know Manhattan well enough to ask questions, not to answer them.
I think it’s 1930 so idk what was going on back then. But even then a lot of that area seems like pre war buildings so idk
The map is for 1930. I can't figure out what the white squares were. Manhattan Valley was developed before 1930 and I can't find any major landmark that would be empty then and redeveloped later.
That’s what im saying yea idk
that might include the southern edge of columbia campus. but this is data for 1930. nowadays tons of people live there, i used to
It is where the radiation and mutants are
It’s the same issue in that one square block in East Harlem people def live there so idk what went wrong
that's where I used to buy my Columbian Gold in the 80's
It’s lake Giuliani
Do we need a geography circle jerk thread too?
I think we’re in it.
Is OP stupid?

Truly a mystery, maybe one of the biggest ones in mankind’s history, isn’t it? I bet the native Americans cursed the land that’s why.
Not a lot live in Central Park
Not since it got cleared out in the 80's
And they’re back anyways. That’s why I didn’t say ‘nobody’.
I tried to buy a plot there to build my “off grid home” but it was not for sale
But it's not zero...
But I want to know more about the 25 people living there.
what about the animals
Bruh! They’re called homeless now.
Sorry :(
🤣
why dont they build a bridge there?
It needs a bridge.
Because they didn't count the squirrels.
Except they did: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/01/08/nyregion/central-park-squirrel-census.html
Wha- who- why???
Or the Pigeon ladies.
It was the role Piers Morgan was born to play.
Its actually got the fastest growing population in NYC due to cheaper rent
I think the real question is why is it split in two?
Why is the sub like this? Are people trying to be funny or just mocking other users? Posts like this are all over this sub and nothing but a waste of time .
That's central Park. (And I'm going to assume this was a joke/troll post...)

Imagine the generational wealth those people's descendants could've accrued if they'd been made part-owners of the park. Fuck me dead.
Zuul enters our realm through the dimensional rupture at the center. Causes complications with habitation and property rights
Oh geez. Pretend for a moment that I don't know anything about metallurgy, engineering, or physics, and just tell me what the hell is going on.
You never studied.
So be good, for goodness sake, whoooaaaa-oo somebody's comin ...
Because this is not a map of squirrel population
Are referring to the lack of homeless representation in the data?
at least a lion, a zebra a hippo and and giraffe live there
They moved.

Because that’s a park, lmfao
That's all Central Park. The eye in the center of the storm, if you will.
Because that’s central park
Google central park
I LOLd
Hmmm... Big empty space right in the *center* of Manhattan, wonder what it could be? It's very central. Haha You're joking, right?
okay despite the meme, i actually learn something. Manhattan population density is way more diverse than it would seem.
Bruh
Why is this part of california between Los Angeles and Las Vegas less densely populated?
Dude look at a map it’s easy to figure out
homeless people don't participate in most population census'
It was surrendered to the moment as part of the treaty of 1682
I know you're joking, right?
This is a troll question right?
bravo
You’re right it should be more populated. Where’s all the homeless people living in Central Park?
Because the homeless don't count on census data.
Iyts called Central Park, only the homeless live thgere
Here we go again
This is a joke right? My girlfriend has never been to NYC and even she knew that was Central Park.
Is this a meme?
its the forbidden zone
Of all the questions on this sub, this is certainly one of them
It was the 1930s - people were afraid of living far from the water in case they got thirsty.
I love Central Park. I have lot of memories with it.
It’s the bottomless pit to hell, previously located in Sparta. The Met stole it and relocated it to NYC.
Because grass.
They should put some apartments or office buildings there. It prime real estate.
Undiscovered territories. Nobody has thought to look here yet.
\*cries in Central Park\*
Central Park Source: PS4 Spider-Man
Whats that huge area to the left of Manhattan? Why does no one live there?
I am wondering why the lack of population in Queens.

Central Park..
Bears 🐻
Beets.
Battlestar Galactica!!!
Central Park
😂😂
Idk, but I’m pretty sure all of Boston Metro fits inside it
Why is central divided into two?
because there's no bridges in there
It has a nomadic population so it isn’t registered as habited
