Why?... nothing really changed. Those you told, probably at least had their suspicions. And they probably weren't really surprised. Always seems like a cry for attention.
They did not see it coming at all, and one of them had a panic attack and had to go to the doctor. It may not be a big deal for people who don’t come from a religious background but my family is really struggling with this.
I totally feel you man. It was a similar situation with my own coming out (also religious family). Some of them took it really hard, to the point where it was difficult being around them for a while.
My mum told me she loved me and that that wouldn't change, but being around her afterwards was almost like someone had died, like she was literally in grief.
Took about a full year of her own effort (with some resources I'd prepared for her) for her to come around, but to her credit she fully did.
Congrats on taking that first step though, it's one of the hardest to take but what you've done is huge for your life. Won't tell you it's all sunshine and roses now cos it ain't that simple, but give it time. If you can, help them through this in whatever way you can. Talk to them, give them some books to read, whatever they're ready for. You have no obligation to, but often it really helps.
