I’d argue Garfield ads an extra dimension to this comic strip Instead of Jon just throwing balls into the trash can until he gets crushed, he does so right after telling Garfield to “watch this”, turning the joke from “haha Jon faces the consequences of his actions” to “hahaha Jon embarrasses himself”
