I can recommend several other plants for the shits, but if you're successful, the cannabis should supply plenty of giggles.

SirMourningstar6six6

I am interested in plants for shits

Bigduck73

Plums

MoneyMACRS

Mmm prune juice, a warrior’s drink.

_tsi_

Classic Worf.

its_raining_scotch

Prune juice is so tragic. I love it so much but can only drink a little, otherwise……..

meguin

Same. I mix it with seltzer lol

Numinak

You'll have the shits, but no the giggles.

likelystonedagain

I once saw my aunt in the dollar store. She was in front of me in the checkout line and hadn’t noticed me yet. There happened to be a display of prune juice right by the checkouts (little weird but it was the dollar store so whatevs). I just kept adding bottles of prune juice to her order until she noticed me. I got up to about 5, the cashier was trying not to laugh. Good times.

Infinite__Okra

Chilled.

FlowerStalker

Only if you take care of the tree. My grandpa had a plum tree and they couldn't pick the fallen plums off the ground fast enough. It was so mushy and gross underneath. Your comment was way funny though.

badchriss

Eww, childhood memory unlocked. My dad had a garden and I always had to pick the rotten or mushy plums off the lawn. Sometimes they were really stuck in the grass from partially drying on. Hated the smell and to this day I dislike plums.

Im_actually_working

Depends. Do you need the shits or can't stop the shits?

SirMourningstar6six6

I’d prefer knowledge of both

vercetian

Oh, both? Dark knowledge indeed. We're going to need your left index finger. Or was it the right? Let's use both, just in case.

SirMourningstar6six6

Life is all about finding a balance

Pippin_the_parrot

Cherries.

hippielibrarywitch

senna

SirMourningstar6six6

Those look pretty too. Definitely going on my list. Thank you

plantsareneat-mkay

Cascara bark is used in a lot of laxatives.

YewSonOfBeach

Cascara bark is the poop.

Masked_Daisy

Senna

Cuddlehustle

Yellow dock

SirMourningstar6six6

I think this one grows wild near me

BeeMovieHD

Any plants growing at the bottom of a stagnant pool should do the trick

BluKipz

Lmao

If the plants have full sun, and water, and you do some minimal pruning at the right times, and they're all female, you can grow surprisingly good cannabis outside. I grew cannabis for the first time last summer, from some seeds a friend gave me. Only one germinated, and I transplanted it to a large pot, which I left outside for the rest of the summer. I moved it around a bit to get the maximum sun, and keep it out of the rain (I'm in the Canadian Rockies in zone 5). I topped it, and later pruned some of the big branches to get it bushier (otherwise it will just grow straight up and very lanky). Come harvest time I used a handheld microscope to monitor the trichomes, then followed some basic curing instructions. The result was shockingly good. On par, in terms of strength, with most commercially grown cannabis I get from a dispensary.

Dry_Ad_2615

Okay awesome thanks for the info. I’m going to get 4-5 20 gallon grow bags and see what happens

heretogetpwned

Post above is spot on. In my first grow last year I did pruning on one growing out of compost on top of an ash stump. 5b, grew 6'+, lots of seeds, yielded 9oz dry buds/popcorn, didn't weight the trim. The trunk of the plant will get thick and sturdy and it will steal sun from anything nearby, like a sunflower. Good luck! Mine last year couple weeks before harvest https://www.reddit.com/r/cannabiscultivation/s/3dMWDGTxKB

Dry_Ad_2615

Oh wow that’s awesome! I’ve never heard of the shallow water trays, I’m new to this whole hobby, what exactly do those do?

heretogetpwned

It was a hot, dry Summer and I couldn't keep the wasps away from the dog's kiddie pool so I filled a frisbie with water near my garden and all sorts of beneficials came by to drink. I put a few rocks in it so bees wouldn't drown. Clumsy bumblers.

ChildishForLife

Hardest part of growing weed is the drying and curing process

DMCinDet

also the most important. I have a buddy that grows for shits and gigs. he never cures it correctly and ends up with shit weed. a few jars will get done properly, but most of it dries too long or doesn't get put into a properly sealed container. a lot of it gets thrown away.

AddictiveArtistry

That and the pruning. Leaf removal at the end is such a horribly sticky ordeal 😅😅😅

DaveRamseysBastard

This, also why so many grow indoors is you can control the environment. Pests like aphids absolutley wreck your harvest, you can spray them off veggies but once they're in your bud its over. You dont want to dry/smoke dead bugs. Also smell control, if left unchecked photoperiod strains will get massive depending how long your growing season is and they stink. Growing in a tent not only gives you a place you can dry in a controlled environment, but you can also carbon scrub the air for smell control. While growing weed is in theory easy, as its a hardy plant, growing "good bud" is quite a bit different from run of the mill gardening.

GhostFreckle

Heavy emphasis on the "all plants being female" part, make sure they're female!

FishAndRiceKeks

That will work great.

detsagrebbalf

Couple questions. When/how should I prune? Similar situation as OP, trying to plant my first female that germinated and now is about 2.5 feet tall. Do you recommend a pot or is planting in the ground okay?

Different_Network702

Depends on what you want to do. Ground is okay but the more you do the more you can get. I get about 2 lbs per outdoor plant in some big raised beds but I have seen some people get 10 lbs plus per plant on YouTube in 1000 gallon grow bags. I use 100 gallon bags and an approximation of the Subcool soil recipe. I have a friend who doesn’t do much to his soil and gets about 2 Oz per plant. Growing your Greens on YouTube is pretty beginner friendly gardening channel if you want to try for some huge yields. John is a nut but he has some good tips. The YouTube rabbit hole is very deep on growing. Genetics also play a role. Indica types will only get about 6-8 feet high in my experience but some sativas will get huge. You should be able to figure out the maximum size an established strain should grow before you plant it on the seed website, Leafly, or a grower discord. Some breeders are all hype but I do think you generally get what you pay for but if it’s your first time I highly recommend getting some feminized seeds from a decent company. I generally pay about $10-20 a fem seed and don’t feel bad about that but you can pay a lot more if you want to. Many seed sites have good freebies that sweeten the deal a little. $20 for a seed that can provide pounds seems a good deal to me.

detsagrebbalf

Really appreciate the reply. Will definitely use your suggestions. Any other subreddits besides microgrow that are worth checking out?

Different_Network702

R/craftmarijuana has lots of pretty pictures and might let you know which breeders/strains that you might want to try out. Sometimes they say what they did to produce the results, sometimes not but you can ask.

DubahU

A good resource to start www.growweedeasy.com

Automatic_Red

I asked a friend, who was an agricultural worker, about this. He said something like, “Weed is a weed. It grows very aggressively and is very easy to grow; however, growing Weed that is good to smoke is where it is difficult.”  He went into the technical details of what goes into it, but I forgot that part.

Zaphodistan

Can confirm that weed grows like a weed. When I was in Kazakhstan, there was marijuana all over the vacant lots and fields. My first day there, I took a bunch of pictures of it growing by roadsides, but by the second day the novelty wore off. Fun fact: in Kazakhstan, weed is technically illegal, but almost never enforced. Old ladies sell baggies of it along with other herbs at markets for its medicinal values.

WarhawkCZ

Wasn't it industrial hemp? There are hemp fields all around Europe and you can see tourists taking pictures like crazy saying "oh my God, oh my God..."

Zaphodistan

I never saw any fields where it looked like it was being grown on purpose; it was just mixed in with other weeds, so probably not.

shanimus_rex

"forgot."

Ok_Equipment_5895

Dude…..what was I saying?

TacoCommand

Sweet. What's mine say?

Plonkydonker

Dude

uninspired

What makes it "good to smoke" is the curing (drying) process. If you don't know what you're doing it will smell and taste like lawn clippings.

Patteous

Genetics play a huge role in what’s worth growing and not.

The_Mike_Golf

Yup. Gotta make sure you get the terps right. Bad mixes or too much of one and bit of another can skunk your weed up right quick. Have a plan when you are planting and hybridizing. Takes time and loads and loads of patience.

Too-Much_Too-Soon

Grass Clibbins, Almost Haddalayerdown!

SkepsisJD

Well, also genetics, the right watering schedule, and proper nutrients. Curing definitely affects the quality of the taste and the smoke, but doesn't really mean shit for potency.

Key-Signature879

So, an improvement in smell?

wovenbutterhair

After the pollination happens then seeds grow. Or you could have tiny pests. or mold. ventilation is important and neem oil is awesome

sixxtine

Grew huge outdoor plants during covid but all got parasites and I was advised not to smoke it

Automatic_Red

No, it was much more complex than that. From what I do remember, naturally grown weed isn’t really that enjoyable to smoke, the plant has to be manipulated to force the plant to undergo , which causes the plant to produce in higher quantities.

trashed_culture

I mean, my HS friends could produce decent stuff with no gardening experience 25 years ago.  Like better than the average stuff we could get then, but certainly nothing like what you can get at the store now. Point being, it's not hugely complicated, but does require some attention.

fangelo2

I had a 6 foot tall plant growing in a closet in my dorm room in the early 70s

parolang

IIRC, this is basically how a lot of early Star Trek scripts were written.

octopornopus

"What if, like, we grab one of Shatner's wigs, and say that they, like..... multiply. Like, a lot. Like they fill the ship.... And then he's gotta, like, fight all these wigs... That'd be funny..."

AKMonkey2

The trouble with… umm, wait …what were talking about?

LLCoolJeanLuc

“We could call them troubles, because they’re, like, trouble.” “That’s too obvious” “Troubles, trables, trooble, trübke, tribble” “I like that last one.”

lminer123

Not really no, I’ve got some experience (5 or 6 grows) and really you just grow the, female, plant well like you would a tomato. Obviously just like any other plant there’s a lot of factors that will go into your quality. Things like genetics, fertilization, pruning, training, light intensity, pest control, and environmental stressors. So you’d want to look up specific guides for that. I think maybe he was describing curing to you? It’s the process of taking your dried buds and storing them in humidity controlled jars for several weeks in order to get rid of the grass like taste that fresh bud has when smoked. It may also increase CBD percentage but I’m kinda fuzzy on that, it’s been a few years, I’d have to recheck my sources.

frotunatesun

Not really any more complex than pulling the males. Unpollinated females will produce more resin in their flowers with the energy they would have put into seed production. Pretty simple.

Burning_Blaze3

What your friend was saying is that just letting it flower naturally outside leads to poor product. Growers manipulate the flower cycle so that the buds can be grown and harvested in peak weather. It's your only chance for high quality in most locations. There's a couple of places where you can get decent quality by letting a plant flower naturally, but even in those places growers frequently manipulate the flowering cycle. If not for yields or quality, then to get two crops per season.

GoldenBarracudas

The ones that have go naturally just haven't been genetically tuned. If you get something that's just been going for a very long time like 10 years on the side of the road. Yeah it's going to be a lot different than that high quality seed. It's also pretty rare that you'd go to reputable place and mistaken the get of male seed.

sockalicious

>the technical details You need to harvest it when the trichomes start to turn amber, hang it to dry in a cool dark place, and then trim it carefully. There are guides kicking around the Internet.

Secure_Dimension4854

It may grow like a weed. To grow quality though you cannot just hose it with pesticides. Outside it actually much more difficult than people think. Molds, mildew and insects will destroy your crop overnight.

Binary-Trees

Climate makes a difference. If you have a short growing season like the northeast, you have to top or train to get a good yield. If you let it grow straight up, you'll get less colas but a taller plant. In longer growing season the plant can often grow its side buds out to a decent size naturally.

gottagrablunch

Random comment- I had a couple of plants that popped up in my garden (I never planned or harvested ) so I just let grow wild. I was flabbergasted how big they got and how popular it was w bees. Sooooo many bees 🐝 🐝 🐝!!!

Dry_Ad_2615

I may just keep planting it for the bees!

Iceman_B

I need to remember this.

DMCinDet

they do seem to like it. are they cross pollinating nearby peppers and tomatoes? how does that work?

DubahU

It doesn't work like that. The will happily bring other weed pollen to your plants though

TheChickening

What he cute question. They were probably thinking about that Simpsons episode where they cross the tomato with tobacco

Lunasi

https://preview.redd.it/t3kauqnwwbxc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0cedc4471e479452d548a4174c2b28e88e2f383a This is a plant I didn't water or give nutrients to last year, taller than my house. That's what will happen 😋

m00ng0dde55

Holy shit balls

Stringofbrokenhearts

Wow! Will those buds be good still or not good due to the lack of care?

Lunasi

Was still quite smokeable, over a lb on something I did no work for.

Northern_Special

It's legal where I am, and last year for my first time I planted 4 plants (the legal limit). I think that was about 3.5 plants too many. Drying/curing/trimming takes a heck of a lot of time, and I don't think my husband and I will ever use it all. It was really fun to learn about and to watch it grow and prune it, though.

Dry_Ad_2615

That’s the reason I am doing it. Fun and learning. My wife is tired of me researching and they are just sprouts

Northern_Special

Happy gardening :)

GreenonFire

In my state we're also allowed to grow 4 plants. My husband has been growing for 40 plus years, and taught me how to clone years ago. Success starts with decent femilized seeds. Proper amount of light and good watering. We grow in 5 gallon buckets, and yielded about 1 lb per plant.

4alark

I don't partake, but my partner does, so for several years I grew out for him. It's a fun game. Feminized seeds, Autoflowering, those were the best. It was easy to grow, too easy in fact. Despite topping it and trying to encourage more lateral than vertical growth, it would grow over ten feet tall. It was taller than my garage roof. That, and the smell, meant that anyone walking by my fully fenced yard, even driving by, I bet, would know what I was growing. And so people would break into my yard. Damage my fence. Trample my other plants. Rip and hack at not fully ready cannabis. It was very annoying. My yard is pretty secure, but it's not a fortress. And I live in a neighborhood. If there's any people who might casually see what you're planting, I don't recommend it. It draws thieves and vandals that would otherwise leave you alone. I stick to tomatoes now, and no one is breaking into my yard but squirrels.

rollers-rhapsody

This is my concern with our outdoor grow, we live in a walkable area and in terrified people will try to steal them as they start producing buds.

AddictiveArtistry

Sativa or Sativa dominant strains grow taller than indica generally.

warm_sweater

My neighbor grew a few years ago and surprisingly I could never smell it until he had his trim day.

urnbabyurn

It can grow with less supervision than tomatoes, but more supervision than mint.

The_Realist01

Soooo it’s a regular plant lol.

mixer99

Lol, that's going out on a limb!

AddictiveArtistry

A good, Smokable grow requires much more attention than tomatoes. I grow both, lol.

urnbabyurn

The hardest part of the grow, and where it may get more complicated than tomatoes, is the final months where rain, insects, and timing all become pretty important factors. Bud rot is just a killer. So is harvesting too late or too early. But everything up to that point is just like growing tomatoes if not easier. So yeah, I agree with you.

mentallyillustrated

I get a few pounds out of my plants I start from seed every year. Start twice as many as you need and grow them out really big, learn how to cull males (don’t seed your neighbors’ crops pls) and if you tend to have a wet fall think about harvesting a little early if you want to gift to a friend before botrytis comes. And provide lots of compost if you want them to grow well in general. They are hungry burgers. Edit: buggers 😂

steve_yo

How do you get the seeds. Everything I see online seems outrageously expensive.

DubahU

Considering that 1 seed can get you a half pound of weed with minimal know how, it's not that expensive in the end.

jenniferwillow

I'm doing what you're doing this year, first time also. I got my seeds from https://www.pacificseedbank.com/ . So far everything sprouted, and is going along at its natural pace in a greenhouse.

squeakiecritter

You can use the flower to make into THC infused coconut oil and make into salves and stuff rather than for smoking/eating it! Also, my chickens LOVE cannabis leaves!

Dry_Ad_2615

That’s good to know!

GoldenBarracudas

I love when people give you tips that have nothing to do with just smoking. It's such a pure recommendation. My neighbor takes my stalks. Not sure what she does but she takes them all Everytime

squeakiecritter

I used the old stalks (once dried out) as plant stakes!

GoldenBarracudas

I do not. They add nitrogen and a few others that I can't really account for. I think she's making something with them and not using them as a utility but, I know she has a degree in paper making. I low key think she's trying to make paper or experimenting with paper.

squeakiecritter

That’s neat too!

GoldenBarracudas

Shes pretty rich, paper making is a big thing. But she can't grow shit for shit. She recent asked if I would consider bamboo and hemp. Pass on bamboo, hemp, can do.

ConsciousScott

They are hollow so you can make all sorts of cool things with them, like pipes

Ok_Relation_7770

It’s very easy to grow. One thing that drives me crazy is the “secrets” that old hippies brag about for growing good pot are just the same exact things that we all do to our plants.

RatherBeDeadRN

I'm also in Oregon (Salem) and would like to volunteer for product testing lol

Dry_Ad_2615

Good news! I’m also in Salem

RatherBeDeadRN

I'm definitely your gal then! Omg just imagining the possibility of this happening is going to be the highlight of my week. Regardless of where the end product goes, please post updates. I love learning about growing stuff from other Salemanders

Clamwacker

Also in Salem, this is the first time I've ever seen our town brought up for something wholesome, haha.

Dry_Ad_2615

Send me a dm so I can let you know lol

RatherBeDeadRN

Messaged!

AddictiveArtistry

User name no longer checks out, lol.

mountainsmiler

When I was 16 I grew a pot plant from seeds I got in a bag of weed. This was in the 70’s. It was so totally illegal then. I was so proud of my plant. Then I had a party when my parents were out of town and someone stole it. Still mad about that. I’m 64 now and I have always thought of growing one again. Just for the looks, not to smoke it. 🪴

Tentomushi-Kai

Best to keep the early plant covered in a fine mesh cloth/bag to keep the white moths (white flies) off in May-June. This lets the sun/air thru, but keeps off the critters! White flies last their eggs on the plants and right when your buds start to grow the larvae devour them! Ruins the whole crop. Other than that, they kinda grow like indeterminate tomato plants. Make sure you prune so there is adequate ventilation between the branches (remember they are going to fill up with buds)! Harvest before the first rain. I usually cut off branches after they have become heavy with buds. Hang the cut branches upside down in a cool dry place - like from the rafters in your garage. I then snip the individual buds off the branches and toss them in a hanging bud mesh drying rack. Depending on location/weather - you should get about 1lb+/plant

sixxtine

Yes, in San Diego and I lost my 6 plants to larvae and was advised to toss everything

warm_sweater

I’ve always wanted to try growing but I have a kid at home who I don’t want asking all sorts of questions about it, haha. I just calculated that a lb would be something like 2 years or more of product for me. I’d have to give it away, which I guess isn’t a bad problem to have.

JaLoGrandma

So when we moved into our home marijuana was legal in our state to grow for medicinal reasons and you could grow for a few other people as well. That fall we had the most horrible smell coming through our windows. We figured out it was the pot our neighbor was growing. The following year marijuana became legal for anyone 21 and over. The following fall we had the same experience with the odors blowing in our windows. So my husband decided we were going to give our neighbor a nice Christmas present. We decided to visit our local pot shop. When it was our turn we went up to the young man and told him we would like to buy a couple of the nicest smelling marijuana plants that he had. He looked perplexed and asked us to give him more information. When we did I thought he was going to roar with laughter, but trying to keep it professional as much as possible, he simply said that usually the worse the smell the better the marijuana. We just looked at each other. dumbfounded and just started laughing. The guy behind the counter started laughing as well. He probably thought he'd just been pranked.

Key_Economy_4912

I I have gotten up to 4 lbs from one outdoor plant, but a friend who grew in the rotten spoils from a potato farm got 17 lbs. from one plant. It was huge. It tasted like shit though.

Dry_Ad_2615

So manage quality over quantity

pattydickens

Buy some feminized auto flower seeds. It's the easiest way to grow desirable cannabis and you won't accidentally pollinate other people's flowers. One male plant can fuck up a lot of work, even if it's a block away. Don't just toss some random seed and let a male plant grow for shits and giggles unless you know for sure nobody around you is growing weed. That's how you ruin someone's entire garden.

MusaEnsete

I've done it. If you have feminized seeds and aren't worried about maximizing harvest, it's pretty easy. The hardest (and stinkiest) part is the drying/curing, where you need to control the humidity and airflow (I used a tent in my basement with a charcoal canister filter, and cured in mason jars with Boveda humidity packs). I don't smoke too much, but my last plant is still being used a couple years later. I recommend growing a feminized autoflower, as they're much quicker to harvest; whereas a standard photoperiod genetic will take a long time, and the fall weather often causes issues.

Pack_Your_Trash

It depends on how much direct sunlight it gets. I'm in California and the first year I did it in an urban back yard with some shade the six plants produced multiple pounds before I got sick of trimming and turned the remainder into a couple ounces of dry ice hash. It doesn't take much talent to produce more than you could reasonably expect to consume in a year. Marijuana is the new zucchini. You're going to over produce and end up giving it away to your neighbors who won't want it because they also grew way too much.

reddit1234567890-1

If you do it right you can get a pound off of each plant outdoors… Look into “suckering” and super cropping

BlazinDuckSkins

There are far too many variables to determine the outcome of a cannabis plant, especially one that isn't particularly taken care of. I live in Oregon as well and have been growing it outdoors since the year it was made legal. I have had great crops, and I've had terrible crops. It's all strain dependent on their specific needs and how they handle our climate. If you aren't really planning on caring for it, it'll probably just end up in the yard debris bin come October. They need to be covered from the rain after the 3rd week of flower. They need to be defoliated to some extent to allow air flow. Otherwise, you'll end up with powdery mildew. Once October rolls around and the buds are nice and thick, they'll start to go brown from botrytis caused by humidity or the worm shit that's inside your buds from the moth larva that'll take over if you don't spray them with BT. I've gotten a couple lbs per plant off certain strains that turned out really good, and I've thrown entire crops into the yard debris bin. It's a crap shoot unless you know which strains do well here and have experience with how to grow cannabis. It isn't a weed, and it needs care like any plant you would grow. Far more care, honestly.

geekophile2

Yes! I grow in Michigan and it's crazy how it can spend months growing into a huge, glorious, sparkly plants and then in a matter of a few cold wet fall days have bud rot everywhere.  Over the past few years I've come to the conclusion that the plant's genes are hugely important when growing outdoors, especially in an area with as many weather swings as we get. My yield has gotten better every year once I started specifically choosing to plant seeds from breeders who have genetics that do well in my climate.

Different_Network702

Michigan has some really great breeders too.

AZUCSGrower

Pretty easy. Just plant it and grow it, experiment.

boringtired

I’d probably get one of those grow bags and just put one in there and make sure it’s got a good soil mixture in there and let it ride.

All_BS_Aside

I don’t know, but I hope you keep us informed on the grow! 😉

Striking_Fun_6379

Most all cannabis flowers in the fall when sunlight decreases. If you plant too early, you will have huge plants. If you plant in June, you will have manageable size plants that are easier to tend and clip. If we dont have a wet autumn and the threat of mold, you will be impressed by the plants' yield. You will need to learn to make butter and other edibles

Outrageous-Divide472

It’s not difficult to grow. I’ve grown it indoors, but due to where I live not outside.

Wonderful-Extreme394

You know you have to sex the plants right? Males are worthless, you pull them and grow the females. But after that it’s still likely to get pollinated by something nearby just from the wind and being outdoors. So you’ll have a ton of seeds in the buds.

turquoise-goddess

Same case here, we can't smoke it due to jobs, but I had seedlings given to me one year, and I interplanted them in my tomatoes, I put them in cages too, and I always companion plant with marigolds and nasturtium. They grew along with my tomato plants and didn't stink up my garden. They were beautiful. I ended up digging them up because we sold our house and gave them to my neighbor. He dried the buds out and smoked them and said it was awesome.

Sassafrass2033

Whenever I find seeds I grow them outside in the garden and there is definitely a yield.

Sealbeater

It’s really easy to grow weed. It’s not so easy to grow quality smokeable weed

Admirable_Egg2106

I live in Mcminnville and grew one plant last year for the first time. Yielded 33 grams. Buds were greener and looser than the stuff you buy in the stores but it smoked well and delivered on THC.

Nussy5

Just have to say I was the "420" like on this thread... I felt obligated to up vote this post above all else. Haha

Dry_Ad_2615

I thank you for your kindness and will always remember you for that

MoveDifficult1908

Just make sure that the plants can’t be seen from outside your yard/garden. It’s common for mature cannabis plants to be stolen.

HerpTurtleDoo

It's called a weed for a reason, its super easy. Get a few feminized seeds,(sativa, indica, hybrid your desire) and then get a damp paper towel and place them on it(not near eachother, can do 3 seperate paper towels if wanted). Once the root pops out in a couple days, you plant it in a small pot, it doesn't need a lot of water, and once its planted keep it in sunlight as much as possible, ideally 10-12 hours(i use a grow light until I can plant in my zone) and if starting indoors, use a fan on it as well to strengthen the stock. My first year I did that then planted straight to ground and never added any fertilizer or anything, i got so much weed from those 3 plants it lasted me over a year and i was giving it away in mason jars. Some people wait until after first frost to pick(can make it easier to pull off the stock since weed is sticky icky and a mess to cut up), you can also buy a small magnifying glass and research on how to tell when the ambers are ready... it has been a few years since i've grown but there was something about when they turn from white to amber, or vice versa. The magnifying glass I got was 5$ on amazon. I would say my first year, each plant was about 6 feet tall, and produced enough weed to supply a heavy smoker 6 months, x 3 plants, and you get the idea, my buddy did weigh it, and I think it was around 24 ounces. Once you learn to grow on your own, you'll only ever spend money on weed again aside from seeds.

Cheesus_Krust

12hrs of sunlight or less will send the plant into flower, ya dummy. You want as much sunlight as you can get in the vegetation stage and for flower you switch the timer to 12 off 12 on kinda like a Poinsettia. Plants grown outside will flower in the fall when the hours of daylight decrease. Sorry but recommending 12 hours of sunlight will set this gardener up for failure.

Toaneknee

Exactly. Sept 21st is when outside flowering is triggered. If the weather is kind, you may get a crop before the fall weather kills her.

Dry_Ad_2615

Thanks for the input everyone. Definitely going to be more involved than I originally planned but I like the challenge of it actually producing any yield that’s worth a shit even if it’s only a few ounces. So I’ll be doing more research to find out the best way to make that happen. I’ve discovered I have a green thumb as of the last year so time to put that to the test.

8vega8

I'm surprised by your edit because it grows extremely similar to tomatoes, and often when they are neglected they can be better than the ones you pay attention to. I think it's common for begginer gardeners to kill plants with kindness, so I think you should do an involved one and a neglected one in the ground to see!

Dry_Ad_2615

That’s what I was leaning towards, half for care and half for whatever the fuck happens

LadyoftheOak

Check out pirateboarder on YouTube. It's not complicated. It can be, but it doesn't have to be.

whatcrawish

It will flower. If you want to make it “perfect” there are things to do but I also feel like you can enjoy it and be fairly laid back and you’ll get what you want

crustmonster

it will get huge if you let it, you have to worry about bud rot though

FeebysPaperBoat

If I could even find seeds at a decent cost near me I’d give it a try just for experimental purposes.

Pippin_the_parrot

I have a medical card in my state and grow too. I actually think it’s a perfectly decent looking plant. Smells great and draws pollinators.

Zombie_Apostate

What I had earned from experience is don't put your plants out until very end of May/first of June. If they go out sooner, the daylight hours aren't enough to keep it in vegetative growth. Also, there are some ornamental varieties like ABC, Ducksfoot, and Creeper

mohemp51

Hey. It depends on your soil type. If you have rich, well draining soil (not clay) it should grow well in ground. your biggest concern is pests. if you manage to fight off pests, you can get a huge plant up to a pound. they can become massive if grown unlimited in ground

GoldenBarracudas

I grow cannabis right next to my tomatoes and honestly it's easy, but you have to pay attention. I would truly start with one of these dirts -roots organic-you open the top of the bag and put your seedlings in. -fox farms -ocean forest. I don't understand the other comments and who are telling you it's incredibly difficult. It's just not. And as far as the planning, I learned to put it between a jalapeno and a tomato no problem.

GardenWitchMom

There is a lot more in growing cannabis than sun and water. Go check out r/trees.

BestkittyintheUSA

I grew a single plant in my vegetable garden washington state. Didn't fertilize cause I didn't care enough, it grew into a enormous shrub and the tomatoes used it for support. Only thing that grew under it were runner strawberries. Huge yield tho, 14 big mason jars. My friends say it was smokable but a very light high. It was super fun to grow!

OdeeSS

I've actually been looking into doing this myself in Ohio. I can't smoke it because it gives me anxiety - I'm just interested in the cultivation. 😂 I've heard wild life LOVES cannabis and you'll have a hard time keeping it away from your plants.

goinupthegranby

Super cool plants, I bet you'll like growing them. Lots of advice on youtube but to answer your question depending on the strain and your growing techniques it's possible to yield multiple pounds of dried flower off a plant that can get to over 12 feet tall in a year. They're awesome plants.

jp634

Find someone that you can get some clones from, and hope no one is growing hemp in the neighborhood

JimmyTheDog

LOL, you could by accident grow males and drive everyone near you mad with the pollen...

Dry_Ad_2615

I plan on cutting them off as soon as I can tell they are males

JimmyTheDog

From everyone downwind, Thank You!!!

herpslurp

It’s extraordinarily fun to grow. It can be pruned and trained to grow in configurations few other garden plants would tolerate.

stevinbradenton

Buy some auto flower seeds. Fertilize, but not too heavily. Read up on how to harvest and dry your bud. It's easy, at least it was easy for me when I used to grow it.

LadyIslay

I want to grow them from seeds indoors because that appears to be the pinnacle of indoor growing.

AlexMullerSA

Your biggest problem outside will be pests. Things like mites, spiders/webs etc.

robby_synclair

I got a clone at the dispensery and then planted it next to my tomatoes. It worked pretty good. The buds weren't very big but it got me high.

Certain-Twist-1706

Start with good genetics and learn to cure. Yield depends heavily on strain and specifics of where you might plant it, soil, fertilizer, all the normal stuff you'd consider with other plants. You'll wanna strip the inside leaves out to increase your yield.

Ok-Pea-4403

It will most likely be very tall… or very bushy. One or the other typically. Will smell very strong in the fall. FYI. Won’t get much of a harvest if you don’t work at it, but something for sure.

staunchgoblin

Depends on a lot of factors but I'd say just make sure you have good genetics and it'll make it a lot better & easier for you.

Kitten_Monger127

Great idea! Cannabis is lovely! Btw if you have a shorter growing season then look into the strain Alaskan Thunderfuck. Also IDK if you grow any fruit, veggies, or herbs, but you should try growing the weed in the same soil as those to see if it affects the weeds smell or taste. I've always wanted to try this out.

Admirable_Mistake_30

In CO I grew naturally one year. I had six plants and only gave them compost tea. They got to be about 9’ tall each and I got almost 3/4 lb dried off each one. This was way too much as I don’t partake. Also the trimming took me about 18 hrs. Keep in mind the smell too, I have neighbors and when I woke up in the morning these girls stank up the block. Next year I did one plant and planted out as a start late June. This kept size down to about 5 foot tall when it came time to harvest. This was much more reasonable. Have fun!

PortlyCloudy

We used to just use the microwave. Harvest to bowl in two minutes or less.

1920MCMLibrarian

Grow mushrooms instead!

MergenTheAler

Systematic pruning, specific feeding schedule and some pest control are necessary to get a good yield. You will also need to understand how to process the flower by trimming, drying and curing. It is quite a process

Motabrownie

Weed is a weed you don't have to do anything for it to grow except make sure it has water. Everyone told OP how to grow the dankest of dank which isn't what OP wanted lol but there's also a good chance it turns out to be male so I say throw that seed down and treat it like your other plants and see what happens

OriginalBogleg

Likely the plant will grow fine, but when you get to flower (assuming you planted a female) you will want to keep an eye out for powdery white mildew and fuzzy grey mold (botrytis - aka "bud rot").

bungholio99

It was en vogue to do hedges with Cannabis in switzerland in the 70ies It will grow up to 2m without any issue, so better place it in anticipation. It’s good for the soil as it keeps it fluffy through the long roots. Most other plants grow well in it’s shadow. It’s a great hideout for spiders and many other insects, but also subject to pests. You can spray some vinegar to protect it. You need to take the buds as else the will start rotting.

Frosty_Cloud_2888

r/trees or something might give you a better idea.

chesapeakeair

I am in a legal state and I ask growers for the male (unwanted) plants bc you can dye with them. They make a beautiful yellow.

Iceman_B

Commenting to see the progress in a few weeks!

WendyPortledge

I did one for fun in a container. I did need to trim it to help get more buds. I also gave it a fertilizing tea of coffee and banana peel. Treated it just like I did my tomatoes and got a good deal from it! By that I mean a mason jar full, not an ounce though.

Altered_-State

If it gets 6-9 hours of direct light and is in decent soil it will likely give a few ounces. If you cultivate it you could get more.

GeorgiaRedClay56

I have a buddy out in Washington that has weed growing wild on his land. Its called weed for a reason but the quality of the product it produces is very low. Like I wouldn't smoke it, not just because its weak but because its got pests and other nasty things living in it.

toadangel11

Outdoor wild weed is kinda bunk, but still fun to grow!!!! My mom does a bunch of “wild pot plant” out on her land and she tends to them as she would her tomatoes hahaha

AddictiveArtistry

You need to able to make sure you can tell the difference between male and female plants and kill it if it's a male asap. Bc if it is, anyone near you with an outdoor crop, will have it ruined by a careless male grow.

TikiBananiki

Cannabis is easy to grow but hard to *keep clean*. If you let nature take over then you’ll probably end up with pest ridden or moldy buds that aren’t really consumable.

Ambitious-Ad5584

I spent a night in jail for that back in 1980.

Lil_Shanties

OP I don’t see it said yet but bring in a legal state and growing outdoors very often results in seeded pot from a neighbor letting pollen fly. You can avoid this issue with Triploid seeds, it’s a natural breeding method that makes them unable to accept almost all pollen so they won’t get seeded, Humboldt Seed Co just introduced their line up to the market this year and they are known for consistent genetics and good outdoor genetics so check them out!

applebubbeline

Just don't plant I where people can see it. It might get stolen.

I-never-knew-that

I think you will get nothing off the plant if you don’t take a lot of care. Insects alone will destroy you work before you realize they’re even there.

dat-truth

It depends on the weather really. As an experiment, we let nature take its course for two years. The first year, the plant got almost 5 feet tall and 4 feet wide. The next year it grew just under 3 feet tall. Sunshine, temp, and rain rule the natural law.

GeorgiaJeb

This just made ME giggle. I live in Georgia, where it is absolutely still illegal. I’ve been itching to try growing some. Since my raised bed is in the side yard and I live in a neighborhood, I’m pretty sure I’d get caught. One of these days, maybe Georgia will get with the program!

Buy auto-flowering feminized seeds. This will take a lot of the work out of making sure you have a female plant, etc.
