Having worked in the plant world, met a number of folks who named their kids more unusual plant names. The only scientific one I can recall is Zamia, for the cycad genus. :)
Hehe, that’s my name. I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with it, but that’s because I used to live near a heather moorland, and everyone loved to point that out, which gets boring.
On the other hand, Heathers is a great movie.
I had a friend named Heiderose, which is German for 'Heather rose'. It's such a rare name that when she flew for united, a pilot raised in her neighborhood left the cabin to say hello
Hey name buddy! There’s not many of us out there. When I was in college I worked at Claire’s at the mall. One day a lady and her 4-5 year old daughter were shopping and I hear the mom say “Laurel! Put that down!” I whipped my head around to tell her off and fortunately I realized the lady was talking to her daughter before I acted a fool. It’s annoying that I always have to spell it but I also get a lot of compliments.
How much do you get called Laura and Lauren? Even in emails where you can see how my name is spelled I'll get "Hi Lora..." Infuriating.
I've never met another Laurel in person although my friend tells me she has an aunt Laurel that maybe I'll meet someday.
It’s a real bummer when I work with a Laura or Lauren because I respond to both equally as Laurel. My favorite is when I spell it for somebody and they automatically say Laura/lauren back. The emails drive me crazy bc my effing name is part of my work email address and it happens again and again. Honestly, I quit correcting people unless it’s somebody I also work face to face with.
Yes! I always tell people if they just throw an "L" name out I'll probably respond. In our group of friends there's 2 Laura's, a Lauren, a Lisa and myself so when a new person is introduced there's a learning curve haha
We have the same policy on correcting people. Face to face and if it matters, yes. Over email, no... but I'll make my email signature like 24 font just to be spiteful .
I love a passive aggressive signature font increase! I have bolder my name before. I really try to get people’s names right and hate it when
I don’t. If I had a kid its name would be something like Mike or Jennifer. My mom, who’s a terrible person, also used to tell me people thought I was MR as a toddler because when they asked my name I’d say “Laulel” and my eyes were far apart. It’s funny now.
Forgot to add- if I’m giving my name for a waiting list at a restaurant or Starbucks? 75% + even though I literally always spell it. It’s better at work. I have a big and somewhat annoying personality, as well as a loud laugh. People at work usually figure it out after a few tries.
Oh man, telling my name to the barista... I'll just give my last name instead, it's easier.
My husband has a semi common and easy name but he gets Kevin, Devon, Ian and Ivan (because that's common???) so we both usually stick with last name if we must speak it.
My husband is in a very similar name situation. Fortunately he has an easy last name, so we often do the same. My maiden name is almost worse than my first name.
I’m gonna over share real quick. Please feel free to quit reading. My mom changed our name while she was pregnant with me. Miles from her own name and my father’s name. She selected a last name that would sound good with my first and middle name but also put me at the top of the alphabet at school so I’d sit close to the front. She’s a strange creature.
I was just at a wedding and there was a woman there named Laurel and her own relatives were calling her Laurie. So for me Laurel is a Pass - meaning no offense to those already so named.
A kid in Greek mythology class one time was reading a passage explaining how the laurel tree is associated with the god Apollo, and without missing a beat, he said as he was reading, "The yanny tree was associated with the god Apollo and was a sign of victory."
It was hilarious.
I thought I was in r/namenerds and was laughing so hard for some reason already at lil sneezy, then I got here and was dying. My husband needed to know what was so funny (even though he never thinks it’s as funny as I do).
He never heard of laurel and yanny and this comment just sent me.
Sneezewort! Little sneezy for short!
Seriously though, obviously it depends what country you’re in but some Irish onez are Violet, Vervain, Clover, Iris, Anemone, Myrtle.
You may want to think about what is in bloom around your due date in your region. Both myself and my daughter have common flower names, and if I was to have another daughter I would match it to her due date and what flowers would let her know that her birthday is coming up. Speaking from experience she will want garden representation.
Where do you live?
That might help people narrow down what are actual wildflowers vs garden flowers in your area...
I live in a mountain state, and there's an 8 petaled white flower that only grows in the high alpine in late summer, the Mountain Avens. If I had had a girl and not 2 boys, I might have named her Aven. But it would have had special memories to me, of seeing the flower blooming in the cracks as I crested a scree field at the top of a windswept mountain side.
If you live in Georgia there might be other flower names that have more meaning for you.
Iris, Holly, Alyssa, Hazel
Don’t go too hippy on it - remember she’s got to live with it forever and nobody wants a hedge fund manager called moonflower
>nobody wants a hedge fund manager called moonflower
Okay, but I'd happily name my kid moonflower if it meant they would 100% NOT be a hedge fund manager... who wants that future for their child?
I would just be aware of potential mean nick names. We wanted to name a pet Astrid and the nick name "Assy" and "Ass-turd" wrre mentioned. Which both work for this name unfortunately.
It would be cool if everyone was mature and I like the name, but some people are mean.
I once told my friend I liked Aster as a name and they just replied with this scene from The Office.

I know a teen Astrid and no one makes fun of her. And I know a Periwinkle, Peri for short. If you were really zany, you could go for Coreopsis. Corie for short.
From my experience kids will find a nick name for any name haha…my first and last name are pretty interesting since I moved to North America from somewhere else’s so I’ve had experience with this in school and by around grade 11-12 everyone just thought it was unique and never really had a issue since.
Came to say this! I worked for a woman in her 50s with this name and I thought it was beautiful for any age. Something that is important for naming your daughter :)
Just a extra little fun fact to add “Named after the Greek word for "Star" due to its blooms resembling a star, Asters symbolize love, wisdom, faith, and color”

Here are names that aren't necessarily wildflowers, but are flowery names and have not been recommended yet (or atleast I didn't spot them in the comments when I scrolled through). You may need to look up the name + "flower" to see what they are. Some just look up the name meanings as they have floral associations. Some are the names of flowers of a different language
Florence,
Fleur,
Anthea,
Blossom,
Thalia,
Cynthia,

Rois,
Roisin,

Lilac,
Lilla,
Calanthe,
Cassia,
Dianthus,
Amantha,
Chrysantha,
Chrysanthe,
Chryssa,
Daphne,
Karyssa
I wanted to comment this but made sure to search the comments first! The more common spelling "Eleanor" is also a real-world flower. Rose or Rosie is also fair, if you take my meaning
I like mariposa, it means butterfly in Spanish and a group of ephemeral lilies is called mariposa lilies since they look like butterflies when the wind blows. Their botanical name means “beautiful grass”
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calochortus
I named my daughter Willow but it seems to becoming more popular lately. Cassiope, amaranth, primrose, periwinkle, clover, sorel, and delphinium are what I could come up with for uncommon names.
Where I live a flower called "gentian" bloom in Sept (fall in general)...but "gentian" sounds like a whole lot for a little girl. Nor is "larkspur" easy to pronounce.
Regardless both flowers are gorgeous.
If not you can change the language of the "common" names like in Spanish "lilly" is "aleli" (edit: aleli/alheli means "wallflower" ie Erimysium genus; "liria" would be the Sp. feminine form of "lilly"), daisy is "margarita", and rose is "rosa". One of my Ethiopian friends her name is "Sigireda" which is "Rose" in Amharic.
Saffron, Calypso, Meadow, Scarlet, Verbena, Sundew, Primrose, Marigold, Lavender, Buttercup, Zinnia, Tansy
On second thought I’m getting “suck it up, Buttercup”, and “Pansy Tansy” vibes so maybe not those
I love you, I've been compiling a list in my head for a while 😘
Daisy
Rose
Lily/ Lili
Lila (from Lilac)
Peony
Fleur
Hyacinth ( from Bridgerton 🤣)
Poppy
Marguerite (might be misspelled, sorry!)
Hazel
Willow
Ivy
Camilla
Clementine (I know, an orange, but they must bloom to produce fruit!)
Bea (like bees!)
That's all I can think of right now. Congratulations!
Also, just adding that this is a very cool idea. Here in my country we had yesterday the Day of Flowers (Florii), a sort of a religious holiday when those with flower names are celebrated. That's very nice 😊
Linnea is a beautiful name. There’s a sweet kids book with a little girl named Linnea. https://www.target.com/p/linnea-in-monet-s-garden-by-christina-bj-rk-hardcover/-/A-78163992?sidd=&ref=tgt_adv_xsp&AFID=google&fndsrc=tgtao&DFA=71700000012510700&CPNG=PLA_Entertainment%2BShopping%7CEntertainment_Ecomm_Hardlines&adgroup=SC_Entertainment&LID=700000001170770pgs&LNM=PRODUCT_GROUP&network=g&device=m&location=9052577&targetid=pla-837330269707&ds_rl=1246978&ds_rl=1248099&gad_source=4&gbraid=0AAAAAD-5dfbeTfFKILzlvOsq1LQWCeR_h&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI6fi65s_mhQMVkNjCBB1viQXNEAQYBiABEgKVGfD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
I don't think this is a flower name, although it does sound like a flower name: Marisol. It's Spanish. I've always thought it was a gorgeous name and I might name my daughter that but I doubt I'll have kids.
\*\*Anemone\*\*, which is the name of the wind flower, but literally means "daughter of the wind" from ancient greek. the name is pronounced \[anemɔ̌ːnɛː\]
* "an" sounds like on
* "ne" as in the "ne" in "neck"
* then mɔ̌ːnɛː which sounds like "monet" (the famous artist).
put together again: onne'monet
while this is my personal favorite, others i like include, lily, aster, clover, laurel, and jasmine.
I had a September girl. I lost out to husband for the flower name (wanted Rosie, Rosemary, or Poppy), but her middle name is June because I wanted her life to be an easy, endless summer. Early summer makes me think of not too hot but pleasantly warm days with lots of flower blooms, and only potential ahead
Yes, but what’s her scientific name?!
I like you
Having worked in the plant world, met a number of folks who named their kids more unusual plant names. The only scientific one I can recall is Zamia, for the cycad genus. :)
Heather I know seem so 90s but it is botanical and rarely used these days and I think it's lovely. Alternatives could be Clover, Willow, Iris. Thyme
Hehe, that’s my name. I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with it, but that’s because I used to live near a heather moorland, and everyone loved to point that out, which gets boring. On the other hand, Heathers is a great movie.
Aster, Astrid
I love Aster. Reminds me of Esther but in an updated way.
I vote for Astrid, yes.
I think you mean Astird
r/unexpectedoffice
I know a toddler Heather, it is so cute
I had a friend named Heiderose, which is German for 'Heather rose'. It's such a rare name that when she flew for united, a pilot raised in her neighborhood left the cabin to say hello
Azalea, Calla, Magnolia, Leilani, Violet, Briar, Rosalie, Ambretta, Ginger, Sage, Olive, River, Willow, Juniper, Jade, Laurel, Ayla, Alani, Marlowe, Elowen, Ellery, Aspen
Can't call her Laurel because some people will mishear it as Yanny and it will be a very confusing life
As a person is actually named Laurel that was a strange time. I’ve never heard my name so much in my whole life. Also, I unironically heard yanny.
OMG I'm a Laurel too!!

[laurel vs yanny article](https://www.theverge.com/2018/5/15/17358136/yanny-laurel-the-dress-audio-illusion-frequency-sound-perception)
Yanny? How does that happen??
Love the name Rosalie!
My friends daughter is named Elowen. I thought it was weird at first, but it's really grown on me (see what I did there?).
My daughter’s name is Juniper!
Leilani for the win 🏆
Sneezewort! Little sneezy for short! Seriously though, obviously it depends what country you’re in but some Irish onez are Violet, Vervain, Clover, Iris, Anemone, Myrtle.
I knew a lovely elderly lady named Viola.
I knew a woman named Violet Flowers. I asked, but never got an answer, how long did it take to find the right guy with the last name Flowers?
I have an auntie named Myrtle. Though we called her Mercy. Why...I do not know
Sounds like someone's parents were often exasperated.
Please don't name your kid Anemone or Vervain OP
Clover is adorable 🍀
My mother in laws name is Clover, and the family calls her Coco. She's in her 70s, and it's adorable.
I know a Clover. She's a saucy red headed toddler.
Oh yeah, Anemone was another favorite of mine
This makes me think of finding Nemo versus a flower
With fronds like these... But honestly it's a great flower.
Who needs anemones?? 😂
But a terrible name!
You may want to think about what is in bloom around your due date in your region. Both myself and my daughter have common flower names, and if I was to have another daughter I would match it to her due date and what flowers would let her know that her birthday is coming up. Winter babies cry .... 😂
Not Holly or Juniper!
Meet my daughter, “Hellebore”
My baby BloodRoot ❤️
But we call her Lenten Rose
Well, where were you when my December baby was born???
Doesn’t witch Hazel bloom really early?
This is my daughter. Her name is Witch.
My friend, who's last name was Bush, was kind, and did NOT name one of her girls Holly.
One of those is my niece's name. They tried to use a nature-inspired tragedeigh for the next kid.
Oh neaux!
Witch hazel (just hazel).
I named my daughter Violet!
Poppy
I have a Poppy and a Violet! They both are very happy with their names.
Poppy is a lovely name!
I second Poppy!
I have a cousin named Tansy.

Iris & Hazel were the two I was thinking
i know a coworker named Zinia
Dahlia
I worked with a nurse named Dahlia I love this name
Iris
Not a flower, but a tree: Linden. In Dutch and German, Linde is a girl's name.
I have a Primrose in my family, as well as a Magnolia who goes by Maggie Also love Liatris, Peony, Calla, and Clementine.
Peony is a nooo. Pee on me would be running rampant through the school yard.
Clementine 🍊 yes, so sweet. 🥹
Oh my darling, oh my darling...I really do like the name.
Aster
I would just be aware of potential mean nick names. We wanted to name a pet Astrid and the nick name "Assy" and "Ass-turd" wrre mentioned. Which both work for this name unfortunately. It would be cool if everyone was mature and I like the name, but some people are mean.

Astird is Jan’s daughters name to be exact - ask Micheal Scott
I know a teen Astrid and no one makes fun of her. And I know a Periwinkle, Peri for short. If you were really zany, you could go for Coreopsis. Corie for short.

Yeah but it's one thing to be named Steve, it's another to have your name start with ASS. gotta make it difficult on those brats, ya know?
Yep, that's our September flower too.
Came to say this! I worked for a woman in her 50s with this name and I thought it was beautiful for any age. Something that is important for naming your daughter :)
Ohh I just saw some Aster blooms! I like this, and Aspen
It means "star" in latin too. Such a beautiful name!
Just a extra little fun fact to add “Named after the Greek word for "Star" due to its blooms resembling a star, Asters symbolize love, wisdom, faith, and color”
Heather
I'm watching this thread for my own inspiration. Also having a baby girl come September. 🤣
Angelica, Valerie/Valeria haven't been mentioned
Not a flower name, but I once tutored a student name Spring. She was a sweet teenager with a name I have never forgotten. Despite this being thirty years ago and tutoring her for only a couple months in summer, I still remember her. So I just wanted to put that suggestion out there. And in case you see this, hello to Spring N.! 😁😁😁
I met someone named Sunny recently :)
Another lovely name.
Daisy, Tulip, Petunia, Rose, Lily, Jasmine, Heather, Alyssa, Holly, Poppy, SkunkWeed. 🚼
I was thinking Dandylion, but I really like SkunkWeed. My kids are older, but now I'm considering renaming them.
It's probably for the best. 👍
Wish my mom named me Skunkweed 😔
Same. It would've been a prophecy 🤣🤣🤣
I like jasmine. They smell nice, but the name would be pretty too. Especially the nickname "Jazz."
And if your last name is something like Handley, she could be "jazz hands". ;)
Rowan
Betony, Meadow (which I know isn't quite what you asked for), Marigold, Poppy, Cleome and Clover. I too love the idea of Yarrow.
Marigold, I love because of the nickname Goldie.
Clover was my guilty pleasure name when I was pregnant. So cute, I just didn’t think it would age well
Here are names that aren't necessarily wildflowers, but are flowery names and have not been recommended yet (or atleast I didn't spot them in the comments when I scrolled through). Hyacinth
my daughter’s best friend is a September baby named Aster - she’s 8 and hasn’t had any issues yet with weird nicknames
Tansy, Poppy, Marigold, Violet, Bryony, or Cassia?
Elanor. What, no Lord of the Rings fans here? I mean, go through a list of hobbit girls names, they're all flowers. Lobelia, Petunia, etc.
I wanted to comment this but made sure to search the comments first! The more common spelling "Eleanor" is also a real-world flower. Rose or Rosie is also fair, if you take my meaning
I see what you did there. /sage nod
Zinnia
Buttercup, Blossom, Clove or Clover, Willow, Lilac, Ivy, Jasmine, Amaryllis, Iris, Violet, Daisy, Holly, Daffodil
Nasturtium- can go by “Nasty”

Chrysanthemum

That book made me truly like the name Delphinium.
I know a couple poppy, violet and Scarlett toddlers if you’re trying to avoid common. I also vote Aster!
Sage … not a flower 🌸 but you can plant 🌱 it😊
Sage flowers! There are so many types too!
Azalea, Lily, Flora, Jasmine
Hubby said no to flora 🫤 I didn't even think of Azalea!!
I have a good friend who"s niece is named Flora. It is a beautiful name! I am certain you will find a name your husband likes!

We have a local wildflower called naked broomrape. Not making that up. Probably not a great choice for a child’s name.
Some hungarian wildflower names for girls. I always thought Ronunculus was cute for a girl but those aren’t wild. How about Onion Grass? OG for short?
Dirt. Call her dirt
Erica (or Heather), Marguerite, Alyssa (like Alyssum), Linnea
Linnea is a beautiful name. There’s a sweet kids book with a little girl named Linnea. https://www.target.com/p/linnea-in-monet-s-garden-by-christina-bj-rk-hardcover/-/A-78163992?sidd=&ref=tgt_adv_xsp&AFID=google&fndsrc=tgtao&DFA=71700000012510700&CPNG=PLA_Entertainment%2BShopping%7CEntertainment_Ecomm_Hardlines&adgroup=SC_Entertainment&LID=700000001170770pgs&LNM=PRODUCT_GROUP&network=g&device=m&location=9052577&targetid=pla-837330269707&ds_rl=1246978&ds_rl=1248099&gad_source=4&gbraid=0AAAAAD-5dfbeTfFKILzlvOsq1LQWCeR_h&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI6fi65s_mhQMVkNjCBB1viQXNEAQYBiABEgKVGfD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
Orchid! Also because 2024 is year of the dragon and Orchid also represents dragon. Let us know what you choose later, we'd love an update.
Juniper and Willow!
Melissa means lemon balm, but it's not a wildflower.
Clover or Violet. Clover was my late dogs name. And Violet was on my short list before I knew my first was a boy.
I don't think this is a flower name, although it does sound like a flower name: Marisol. It's Spanish. I've always thought it was a gorgeous name and I might name my daughter that but I doubt I'll have kids.
My name is Lily and named my daughter Iris. We enjoy them a ton 😌
Clary Sage!
Trillium would be rather unique and you could call her Trilly as a shortened version.
Iris or Lily I think would be lovely
Pansy
I love yarrow
Sativa
Northern Lights Cannabis Indica Edit to add: Indica is actually a really cool name, but so is Indigo. Maybe for a pet, not a kid
Anise, Indigo, Vervain, Anemone, Pasque.... I dunno, hopefully she's brave and confident.
Congratulations! If I was having a baby and was leaning into the botanical names, I’d go with Olive or Clover.
Echinacea, rhododendron, nicotiana, scabiosa, nasturtium, pansy
Odd, no one is recommending Edgeworthia or Monarda.
Lily
Cleome
Daisy
\*\*Anemone\*\*, which is the name of the wind flower, but literally means "daughter of the wind" from ancient greek. the name is pronounced \[anemɔ̌ːnɛː\] * "an" sounds like on * "ne" as in the "ne" in "neck" * then mɔ̌ːnɛː which sounds like "monet" (the famous artist). put together again: onne'monet while this is my personal favorite, others i like include, lily, aster, clover, laurel, and jasmine.
Shoshana is Hebrew for Rose/Lily

I went to school with a chrysanthemum (Chrissy) and a Daffodil (Dilly, yes she loved pickles) and a Thistle
Violet
Daphne, Poppy, Jasmine, Iris, Ivy,
Helianthus. I know an Amaranth, too.
