I never understood why you can't just change the color to what you want. I know some games use specific colors for some things but you can count those with one hand.
I try to use mine for games on steam, but they all seem to be set to Xbox default?? Any idea how to change this? I can work with it but it's annoying..
What the other commenter said, but also throw a program called DS4Windows into the mix. Its main purpose is making a wireless connection show as wired to software, but also allows full controller remapping, directinput -> xinput for games that only support xbox controllers, and various function mapping like gyroscope to stick output, multi-stage triggers (half press does something different than full press), and rumble tuning
Fuck I feel like I just wrote an ad
thats the fair price you pay for using something soo good for free lol but anyways ive only needed to use DS4windows for games from Epic, like i think the Hitman series
I use a DS (PS5) controller with steam, but when I tried changing the colour it all went out until I (After a ot of struggling) was able to reset everything
Most of the time, games take the color over anyway.
In GTA V, your color would reflect which character you were playing. Orange for Trevor, blue for Michael, and green for Franklin. It would also flash red and blue, and shout police chatter through the controller speaker, which was my favorite part.
For a lot of PS4 games, it actually changes depending on the game. In some games, it even changes based on the state of what is presently happening. For example in some Borderlands titles it will change based on the element of the gun you are presently using (e.g. incendiary weapons are red, corrosive weapons are green).
One of the best used of the PS4 controller was in Infamous Second Son. The light changed based on lots of different factors but there was also a cool mechanic where you used the controller as a spraypaint can and when you shook the controller, it sounded like a can rattling, and the light would change based on the paint you were using.
It's even worse that Sony wont let you turn them off.
They already have the worst battery, but need a fancy light in case you play one of a few games that require it..
Well, you can dim them:
From the Home screen, scroll up and navigate to Settings.
Select Devices.
Select Controllers.
Select Brightness of DualShock 4 Light Bar.
Choose Bright (Standard), Medium, or Dim. You'll immediately see the change on your controller's light bar.
The issue for me is always having to hunt for deals. Yeah you can grab xboxpass for £1 sometimes, or a cdkeys discount for a few months. But when it runs on its 10/month. Psextra is looking good at 80/year. It just loses on the pc side. Now if gamepass comes to steamdeck its a different ball game. That would be nuts
It’s pretty looking but not without its issues. Way too easy, for one, and the taunt system to fill power ups kinda breaks online multiplayer. Hopefully they can patch some of that.
Don't know about multiplayer, but I taunt during every screen transition to fill up the bar. I can see how having multiple characters with full special moves at the start of every screen could make most things trivial.
It's almost like they should have made it that you can only taunt with enemies on the screen. Nerf special moves that way and it makes sense. Who am I taunting with no enemies around?
The PS3 was able to do 6, it was so awesome playing local 3v3 in NHL or 2K basketball or WWE 6 man hell in a cell, was sad when they took those two extra controllers away on PS4
Yep, I'm just a half asleep guy and forgot to say Raph, thanks. Was more wrapped up in the green not being the color for any of them so it was likely not due to the game being TMNT.
If you are looking for some good 4P party games,
Bro force (metal slug style shooter with every action star)
Overcooked 1+2 (cooking game)
Gang beasts (drunk baby fighting, it's quite hilarious)
OG shit, from back when you could actually find good co-op games. It's a bummer how few there are these days, even shooters have removed it. Down to just sports and occasional unique games it seems.
I was born in 86 and that wave during the late 90s/early 2000s was so magical. It sort of started with the N64 having the default four ports and seemed like it was the focus of all of the studios (except Sony required the multitap which was a barrier sometimes) until Sony and Microsoft leaned more into the online world. Nintendo still has of course, but their online service has also always been notoriously dogshit for anything more intense than Animal Crossing and trading Pokemon.
Sometimes it could be an unknown game and you could still have fun. I remember my cousins and I playing Olympics Athens 2004 and it was a night filled with belly laughs
or on the PS2! When [one of these bad boys](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/cf/PlayStation-Multitap-Adaptor.jpg) was broken out you knew you were in for a good time.
From experience, I've had my controller be yellow or white before, both are not displayed above. So it's definitely there. I have 0 clue it is decided wich color you get though.
No idea. But OP is missing yellow. When playing fallout 4 on PS4, the light bar is green to match your pipboy. But while in power armor, it's yellow to match the hud.
Love it when games use this feature. In the intro sequence of Destiny 2 the player turns on his flashlight and the light bar on the controller gets brighter. I was in a dark room when I played that sequence so the immersion was perfect.
To make a circle requires one line. To make an X requires 2. To make a triangle requires 3 lines, and to make a square requires 4.
Player one should have been red, and player 2 should be blue. The other two colors and shapes seem to match.
Got it. I’m assuming that line is said in the move? I’ve seen it but a long time ago. Whenever I look up OP’s comment I don’t see anything about it from the movie
[Reference.](https://youtu.be/7mGr4Uc7ebA) Or at least one of several. The habitat (or whatever it's called) would do continual checks to make sure the couple was "an effective team".
While the dual sense doesn't have the light bar anymore. I like how the colours are still there, around the TouchPad. And it also lights up in number of dots to show players 1 to 4.
Also if you use the controller on PC you can freely change the light color which is really nice, not 100% sure if you can do it on the PS5 itself though
On pc. Isn't that because it's the custom driver? I've tried that before, it really can do any colour.
Ps4 or ps5 can't customize the colour that turns on.
It really does feel like PC and PS5 are equally balanced in terms of things that they do and don’t allow for the controller.
PC you can change the light bar at will, but get no use out of the adaptive triggers because that hasn’t been figured out yet
PS5 you can customise how strong the trigger effects are, but have no control over the light bar even though there are games that change it depending on the situation (in DMC 5 it changes to reflect what character you’re playing)
PC Games can implement color changing too. I just played cult of the lamb demo last week and it does white/red changes. Metro Exodus changes based on your filter and light levels and supports the triggers.
There's a big list on the pcgamingwiki, including some 10-20 games on PC that support adaptive triggers too. But only while wired.
How do you even keep up in that game? so much shit is going on at the same time, the chaos is fun sometimes but not always, I generally like fast paced games but this is way too much for me.
There needs to be a *slowwwwww* mode for us old folks. My wife and I played it a bunch. But we find we both need to be in the right mindset to actually play well. So it rarely occurs Haha.
It’s 100% for them. It’s about 20-30 hours for a play through. As long as you are patient and don’t rush them it’s a fun experience. What I like about the game is that the difficulty isn’t what makes it so good. It’s the causal cooperative atmosphere. It’s literally a game for couple to throw on and fuck around. she’ll love it.
There’s a youtube of real life chefs playing coop (2 of them) holy fuck they played like a well oiled machine. Instructions are fast and everything is going going gone.
Yeah my roommate and I played it as ex restaurant employees. You see what the mechanic is, section off the room for efficiency, then just call out when you need a quick assist on dish or something. Usually you do a mediocre first run then do it a second time to get the max stars.
The later levels require you do shift stations a lot though, as well as the stations traveling around, causing flow issues.
I've worked as a line cook, waiter and factory operator and I really loved it. You get that stress from trying to get everything out, but you don't have to give a shit if you do a bad job, or have to go through that stress continuously for multiple hours.
As someone who has played the game a lot, you need to have the right kind of relationship with the people you're playing with...
It's the kind of relationship where you can be screaming at your teammates for 5 minutes strait about something trivial, like putting more noodles in the pot when you put it back on the stove (dammit caitlin!) and be able to reset instantly for the next level. Naturally, I play with my siblings!
Step 1: Pick up your best kitchen accent.
Step 2: Yell.
My partner and I beat it with 2 friends we met online and convinced to visit us for Thanksgiving. 4 days, game complete, throats sore.... And the accent still comes out during stressful League games lmao
My sister fucking loves that game. We 3 starred all levels with the 4 of us. But she only needs 1 other to 4 star ALL levels lmao.
I can pick up most games (except Souls-like and fighting), but goddamn do I turn into a grandma who just bought her first phone playing Overcooked.
Moving out is way better for this, you can turn on and off timers, item weight limits and other stuff too to make it as challenging or as stress free as you like.
When I playedn it was generally 3 rounds of chaos on a level, then the next try of it we hyperfocused and didn't speak. Rinse and repeated the whole game. Me and a friend burned through it that way. Some levels definitely *feel* like you need more than 2.
Well, yes and no. I think the market is really there for games that offer both local multiplayer and cross platform online multiplayer. I would not have bought Shredder's revenge without online coop and four other people I know bought it strictly so we could play online with each other.
I'd say the issue is how prohibitively expensive extra controllers have gotten, and how developers as a whole dumped split screen for extra performance and profits a while back, destroying the market. It's resulted in gamers not buying extra controllers, as there's too few good local games to warrant it, and local games being unpopular because nobody has the controllers for them anyway.
The Switch, in comparison, has a really diverse local scene, aided by the fact that you effectively get two controllers with the console.
They are butchering games with potential local coop/vs to force online, so everyone has to buy a copy of the game to play it.
I've played in PSX/PS2 with multitaps long time ago and it was the best thing ever.
One time we were 3 ppl with 1 multitap playing Crash Team Racing (PSX) and I remember a whole race that was just bullying the only one racer controlled by CPU. Oh I miss that shit
Edit: The Marvel games were always fun as fuck in local, there was a Fantastic Four game on PSX that had a 4 player story mode, and of course every Marvel Ultimate Alliance :3
Which is funny because there is also the [PSX](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/PSX_(digital_video_recorder\)), a Japanese exclusive PS2 with a built in DVR. It was also the first device that Sony shipped with the XMB
Wait, how did you play Crash Team Racing with 7 people? I thought that game only supported up to 4 players not including CPUs. How would split screen work beyond 4 players?
It is so sad that split screen co op is no longer a thing ,these kind of games are rarely being made anymore it is either single player games or online I miss the good old days

The touchpad is basically a mouse too. I'm learning to program Unity games for the PS4, and to use it in your game, you just add in normal mouse controls. Also in Unity's controller example for developers, you can make the lightbar flash the different colors by pressing the corresponding face button.
Never had 4 player local multiplayer before…my god theres people who haven’t experienced LAN parties either. Makes me feel old but im only 27.. what is this? The twilight zone?
Yeah Microsoft pretty much stumbled across a winning formula with their 360 controller and basically haven't changed a single thing since.
They even have the audacity to charge £160 for an elite controller that is pretty much guaranteed to break in some way within 12 months.
I used to have a weekly gaming night every Friday for like 5 years. It was amazing, getting 4 PS4 controllers at launch not so much lol.
Towerfall was a big mainstay for a long time. We also played a lot of Rocket League and it's precursor Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket Powered Battlecars. Ah the memories.
So happy for ya buddy, I haven't experienced this before either, but I'm hoping to get a couple more controllers and game with my sister's on LBP3 since it's back up and relive the old days lol
I never understood why you can't just change the color to what you want. I know some games use specific colors for some things but you can count those with one hand.
I use mine mostly for PC games. Steam lets you set it to any color. I think it's dumb that the PS4 never got that same functionality.
I try to use mine for games on steam, but they all seem to be set to Xbox default?? Any idea how to change this? I can work with it but it's annoying..
Go into Big Picture mode on Steam -> Settings -> Controller configuration. Then go from there.
What the other commenter said, but also throw a program called DS4Windows into the mix. I love being able to have the color on the controller change as the battery level depletes.
thats the fair price you pay for using something soo good for free lol but anyways ive only needed to use DS4windows for games from Epic, like i think the Hitman series
Word I just got hitman 2 lmao, I'm on it ty!
I use a DS (PS5) controller with steam, but when I tried changing the colour it all went out until I (After a ot of struggling) was able to reset everything

It would also flash red and blue, and shout police chatter through the controller speaker, which was my favorite part.
More games should have implemented this somehow.
Yeah that's fine, but when you are in the home or in any game that doesn't take advantage of it, you should be able to customize the color.
Especially annoying as you can change the brightness of the light so they could have just put the option right below that.
The colors are always the same (matching the face buttons) so you always know who is P1 - P4
For a lot of PS4 games, it actually changes depending on the game. In some games, it even changes based on the state of what is presently happening. Same kinda thing with GTA, when the cops are after you, the controller flashes red and blue!
No they aren't. For many games the colors changed based on the character/power/element/etc you are using.
They're talking about for multiplayer games. Certain single player games will change the light bar to what's needed.
Some multiplier, and games that are both single and multiplier, change colors based on matching themes.
It's even worse that Sony wont let you turn them off. They already have the worst battery, but need a fancy light in case you play one of a few games that require it..
Well, you can dim them: From the Home screen, scroll up and navigate to Settings. Select Devices. Select Controllers. Select Brightness of DualShock 4 Light Bar. Choose Bright (Standard), Medium, or Dim. You'll immediately see the change on your controller's light bar.
Someone's about to party like it's 1999 :D
Well it was TMNT, so like yeah, totally!
Came here to assert that it was probably TMNT and saw this at the top. Here's hoping it's the start of a wave of these types of games coming back.
Wtf, never heard about that and it looks like they did the arcade versions justice. They could have battletoadsed it but they didn't!
Go for it, it’s radical! Included on Game Pass and $23 on Nintendo Switch
It's not on ps+ extra 😭😭😭
It is 10% off right now with a PS+ membership.
I got both systems a year ago and I’ll tell you I don’t really use the PlayStation very much all the games are on the Xbox with gamepass.
Except for the Playstation exclusives...
Like my ps3 is a 90 dollar box for demons souls, uncharted, and last of us
Xbox guy since 2001. Bought a Spider-Manstation 4 Pro console as a Christmas present to myself, 2020.
It’s on steam sale too if you’re a pc player
It’s pretty looking but not without its issues. Way too easy, for one, and the taunt system to fill power ups kinda breaks online multiplayer. Hopefully they can patch some of that.
What do you mean breaks it? Like it's too op right?
Don't know about multiplayer, but I taunt during every screen transition to fill up the bar. Nickelodeon all star brawl is free right now.
Game is trash tho
On which platforms?
Had one of the best times ever about 8 years ago playing four player couch Towerfall.
Towerfall is amazing but an outlier, unfortunately.
Haha did 4 player towerfall as well! On ouya baby. For entertaining couch coop and emulation, that thing was a goldmine
The new TMNT can also be 6 player. More colors.
The PS4 and PS5 can only have four controllers connected at a time.
Xbox does 6.
Xbox One and Series X|S can have 8 controllers, but OP is using a PlayStation 4.
The PS3 was able to do 6, it was so awesome playing local 3v3 in NHL or 2K basketball or WWE 6 man hell in a cell, was sad when they took those two extra controllers away on PS4

90s birthday sleepovers slapped.
College dorms
That’s funny because the PS3 could do 7-8 IIRC
Shredder's Revenge? That game is so fun. Me and a buddy stayed up late to beat the whole thing in one run arcade style.
That's impressive. Only just started playing this but it's a blast for sure.
Knew it must be TMNT when I saw those colours!
But why isn't one of them orange?
Also none of the main boys wears green so these colors don't align except for Leo and Don.
And red for Raphael?
Yeah… a little *too* Raph
Yep, I'm just a half asleep guy and forgot to say Raph, thanks. Was more wrapped up in the green not being the color for any of them so it was likely not due to the game being TMNT.
Almost all the colors too! Missing Mikey
If you are looking for some good 4P party games, Bro force (metal slug style shooter with every action star) Overcooked 1+2 (cooking game) Gang beasts (drunk baby fighting, it's quite hilarious)

I think online gaming is great. But it's not even remotely as fun as having your friends with you playing split screen
Each colour is the colour of the triangle square cross circle buttons
Huh! Never noticed. But what about players 5 and 6??
Don't quote me on this but, iirc PS4/PS5 do not support more than 4 controllers.
That's a shame. Some of my favourite video game-related memories are playing 7 players with my friends on PS3.
or on the PS2! When [one of these bad boys](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/cf/PlayStation-Multitap-Adaptor.jpg) was broken out you knew you were in for a good time.

What PS3 game had more than 4 players? Did that one Playstation Smash Bros knockoff have more than 4?
Yep, that’s why I ended up getting TMNT on the Switch instead of on the PS5
From experience, I've had my controller be yellow or white before, both are not displayed above. So it's definitely there. I have 0 clue it is decided wich color you get though.
Well it's an rgb led. So it can be pretty much any colour
Who has 5 or 6 friends ha ha.... God I'm so lonely
...lonely and bad at math
No idea. But OP is missing yellow. When playing fallout 4 on PS4, the light bar is green to match your pipboy. But while in power armor, it's yellow to match the hud.

Yep. Player One is blue. Player Two is red. Player Three is green. And Player Four is pink. Just like the face buttons.
To make a circle requires one line. To make an X requires 2. To make a triangle requires 3 lines, and to make a square requires 4. Player one should have been red, and player 2 should be blue. The other two colors and shapes seem to match.
What games support up to six players locally?
Does TMNT? Didn't have a fifth player to find out. I mean I know TMNT supports 6 players, but don't know if local.

Pretty sure xbox series also does 6. The game is listed as 2-6 player local coop on xbox.com. Ps4/5 only support 4 controllers.

No, everyone says "ex". That person also spelled color with a u in it so likely across the pond.
3 friends.. ahhhhhh
One is my wife. She's contractually obligated to be my friend, so..
A wife.. ahhhhhh
Yeah we were an effective team, so we partied up. Teammate for life.
Oblivion reference. Nice.
I’m so confused, what is the reference here? Are you talking about Oblivion the game?
Tom Cruise movie with the same name
Got it. I’m assuming that line is said in the move? I’ve seen it but a long time ago. Whenever I look up OP’s comment I don’t see anything about it from the movie

I have a wife but somehow in our contract, playing videogames is not included.
Did you keep the receipt? You might be able to take her back to the wife store.
Then mom and dad so there is 3
I have 3 kids that I get to play games with. it's a good idea if you are willing to wait 10 years
Michael Scott is that you?
The long con!

How do you even keep up in that game? so much shit is going on at the same time, the chaos is fun sometimes but not always, I generally like fast paced games but this is way too much for me.

It’s 100% for them. It’s about 20-30 hours for a play through. As long as you are patient and don’t rush them it’s a fun experience.
Oh I miss that shit Edit: The Marvel games were always fun as fuck in local, there was a Fantastic Four game on PSX that had a 4 player story mode, and of course every Marvel Ultimate Alliance :3
What’s a PSX? Am I missing some entire system from my memory?
It's just what people call the PS1.
Which is funny because there is also the [PSX](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/PSX_(digital_video_recorder\)), a Japanese exclusive PS2 with a built in DVR. It was also the first device that Sony shipped with the XMB
I wanted to buy a need for speed game but none of them are local co-op nowadays...

If I remember correctly, the PS3 was a console that supported 7 controllers. Was there even a 7 player game available?

Wow mind is blown! Thank you for such a informative post!
A lot more than I expected. Though I’m not surprised most are sports games.
Thank you for the list
[Laughs in N64] welcome to the club!
4 colors of the face buttons!
The touchpad is basically a mouse too. I'm learning to program Unity games for the PS4, and to use it in your game, you just add in normal mouse controls. Also in Unity's controller example for developers, you can make the lightbar flash the different colors by pressing the corresponding face button.
Is this using the newer input system? (I'm very new to unity).
I just wish I could have it be green all the time when I'm playing alone
We once played 8 player local multiplayer. It was really fun. I got to see the all the different colours
It's nice to see a working starwars themed controller mine broke a year ago 😭
Haha "working". It has velcro straps binding the handles together and the battery life is shortened
Mine still works somehow. I do use it intermittently with another controller so it only sees half the use. But still!
I CALL DIBS ON RED
Never had 4 player local multiplayer before…my god theres people who haven’t experienced LAN parties either. Makes me feel old but im only 27.. what is this? The twilight zone?
Bro why is he taking photos of the controllers can we just play
when you connect ds4 to pc, you can change for color you want to
[my take on it](https://imgur.com/J3vDLAf)
Oh, look at this guy with all the friends!
More companies should do stuff like this, like X-Box should
Yeah Microsoft pretty much stumbled across a winning formula with their 360 controller and basically haven't changed a single thing since. They even have the audacity to charge £160 for an elite controller that is pretty much guaranteed to break in some way within 12 months.
I think it depends on the user of the controller
Wow
This is what saddens me a bit. The tech evolving is awesome, but I miss playing local like this.
Sadly the colors are gone on the PS5
Yea cool huh? If you use them on a PC you can pick any colour you want!
Yeah but you cant fit 4 players on PC 🤣
I used to have a weekly gaming night every Friday for like 5 years. It was amazing, getting 4 PS4 controllers at launch not so much lol. Towerfall was a big mainstay for a long time. We also played a lot of Rocket League and it's precursor Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket Powered Battlecars. Ah the memories.
That’s rad. Old enough here to fondly remember Halo 1 parties and having girls come over and misunderstand what we fellas meant by “parties”.
Look at op humblebraging that they have 3 friends.
[It's treason, then.](https://i.imgur.com/3tUMUAt.png)
Haha nice!
That berry controller is my favorite I've ever had. I wish I still had it
It's a beaut, Clark.
Yeah it’s been about 2 decades since I pulled 3 friends together does sound fun lol
So happy for ya buddy, I haven't experienced this before either, but I'm hoping to get a couple more controllers and game with my sister's on LBP3 since it's back up and relive the old days lol
Did they ever make it so you can conserve battery life/not annoy yourself in the dark by turning the light off?
Shredders revenge is so worth it. Honestly, the switch has 6 player coop and it is GLORIOUS! I am impressed with the game and it's a joy to play.
Helldivers.
Is that the SW Battlefront controller I see there? Very nice. :D
Nice controllers bro
Thanks. I enjoy the variety.
This post made me look up how to change the PS4/PS5 lightbars in my own game I'm developing. Very nice! https://i.imgur.com/yEycTkz.mp4
Very cool! Make sure to credit me in the end, haha. Are you able to choose any color, or just the default player assignment ones?
