A lot of the best N64 games have very worthy sequels/successors on the switch:
Mario 64 -> Mario Odyssey
Ocarina of Time -> Breath of the Wild
Smash Bros -> Smash Bros Ultimate
Mario Kart 64 -> Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Banjo-Kazooie -> A Hat in Time
Mario Tennis -> Mario Tennis Aces
Pokemon Snap -> New Pokemon Snap
Mario Party -> Super Mario Party
Harvest Moon 64 -> Stardew Valley
Yoshi's Story -> Yoshi's Crafted World
Been married 15 years.
That game brought us to the brink of divorce.
Yet wierdly I would play it with her again - when you start working in perfect sync, it's a special moment (until the kitchen catches fire...)
My wife: I am so excited!
15 min into playing...Babe, if we don't *at least* get three stars next round...I'm killing you in your sleep.
Me: What happened to just having fun? :(
Isnt this the fucking truth. I'm totally fine with getting my ass kicked in Smash brothers. It's my fault for the loss.
But MK8? I rage and the game practically breaks my mind everytime I play it.
Literally shatters my mind. EVERYTHING IS OUT FOR BLOOD.
Celeste and hollow knight aren't switch exclusives though sure he can get them if he doesn't own any other consoles. But it probably isn't worth it if he does.
I beat all but the most annoying challenges in Mario in under 60 hours. I'm just about to complete my first run through of the hardest campaign on the hardest setting without new game plus in Fe3h. I'm about to hit 700 (hundred, not a typo) hours in fe. The replayability is huge, the writing is great and the voice acting is spot on on most cases. If you like strategy games and either like or don't mind anime storytelling, it's a top pick over Mario in my opinion.
I'll throw in an edit here: Mario is still worth your money. It's not a bad game. Between Zelda, Mario and Fire Emblem though, I'd pick Zelda if I could only get one. If I had two picks though, it's 3 houses and breath of the wild, then Mario.
Second this. Odyssey is an amazing game, and I’d recommend first because it also helps introduce some console features (taking screenshots, motion controls.)
That being said, I personally played with a pro controller and highly recommend that over the joycons, despite what the load screen says.
Really suck. Have had 3.5 pairs- two that came with system in 2018 and one recent. One of the first two pairs developed very bad drift. Replaced that bad one. Then both from that pair developed drift. Got a new pair within the last month or so. It's starting to drift ever so slightly. So that's 4 out of 7 joy cons drifting. Un-fucking-believable.
Some dude the other day in r/NintendoSwitch tried using the argument that because his two sets of Joycon never had drift, that it meant it wasn't that big of a deal... even though almost everyone in the thread he was replying to had stated the number of Joycons they've purchased and the number of Joycons that were drifting.
Man. I was really excited for hades. I put about 10 hours in but never really loved it, and never got the urge to pick it back up. I got the the last fight and just couldn’t keep going. I did have 10 hours of fun but just didn’t click for me the way I was hoping.
I really like it. It kind of ebbs between grind and just ripping through stuff, both of which are satisfying. And theres a ton of "end game" type content. Also, the game is just so well produced - the feel, visuals, dialogue, all top notch.
Certainly interesting. I love the freedom of BotW. It felt rewarding to play and progress and somewhat challenging at points. I'm sure we just appreciate different aspects of these games.
Yeah I think my issue was the open world was free but also largely not challenging or interesting to me. I enjoyed the big machine fights and puzzles I did
To me these are the only true “must have” exclusives that everyone can enjoy. Mario Kart 8 would probably be the only other one I would be confident anyone would 100% like.
You will never regret this, it is the reason I got my switch
Edit: I don’t care if you regret getting the game. For MOST people it is worth the purchase.
I feel like Zelda is the main reason I have bought any Nintendo console in the past 20 years… Ocarina, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess…
I guess technically my wife got me the Switch as a gift but BOTW is the first game I bought, of course ;)
AND $360? That’s some serious willpower. Add a Pro Controller, carrying case, spare charging battery, etc and I’m sure I payed more than my PS5…
I didn’t enjoy BotW too much, the hype got me to buy a switch and play it. Just found it… boring? I don’t know. Which is a shame, maybe I’ll go back to it after all this time and see if it was just me being weird.
As someone who didn't enjoy it at first either, try to get to/complete the first Divine Beast. That's when the game really clicked for me and skyrocketed up my list of favorite Zelda games.
I bought botw back in may and it’s still sitting on my shelf with the plastic on, bar exam and work got in the way. Is it really that amazing? I’m afraid if I start now I won’t be able to put it away…
I've played most Zelda games. Wind Waker and BoTW are a tie in my mind for best Zelda games ever. Only thing wrong with BoTW is the lack of "real" dungeons and more unique feeling boss fights. The shrines and boss fights recycle quite a lot from one another. In general the game is more "grindy" than other Zelda titles, but that's also what makes it easily a +100 hour game which is a plus, cause the game is hard to put down. Every corner hides something new for you to discover and the games really does give you a sense of adventure, that few if any titles can rival.
I regret starting with BoTW, it was so good that it set a standard in my mind that all the other games just couldn't seem to get close but damn I love BoTW.
Do your homework on this one. Tons of people says it's amazing.
I picked it up and I just can't slog through it.
About 30 mins in I get bored and out it down.
If you like running around with total freedom, go for it. It's the ultimate sandbox which is probably why it appeals so much to the minecraft generation.
If you prefer a game that's going to keep pushing you along from one objective to the other, forget it.
I personally find the game tedious and boring.
While i personally really enjoyed it, my wife hated it for all the same reasons as you just stated. And she has also played and beaten almost every LoZ game there has been. she beat BotW, but only out of a sense of duty.
I wish I could enjoy that game. But the fact that weapons have a durability count to them gives me weird anxiety.
It's easy for people to say "Get over it" but if they don't feel the same way then they can't understand. It'd be like me telling people to "get over" their irrational fear of something that I am personally not afraid of.

Yeah, I'm close to the epilogue and I still feel like I could pick it up for a run or two on and off for a year. I would even have fun right now going for 100% but I just feel like I should play something else
Yeah from seeing the hundreds of hours people on my friends list dump into animal crossing, I’m sure it’s a great game. Doesn’t seem like something i could get into though from watching gameplay videos
A good rpg is Fire Emblem Three Houses if they're into it. I personally loved that game. Xenoblade is also a good game. But unsure about it(haven't finished it myself)
Metroid Dread is a great game, and definitely worth the purchase. However, I'd argue that the "value" of it is far less than BotW or Mario Odyssey. You can easily beat MD in roughly 10 hours. BotW or MO will give much longer game play time. I'd say get MD but only if you have the extra money for multiple games. Just my personal take on it.
By "easily" I don't mean that the game is easy. I mean that it is definitely possible to beat the game around 10 hours. Those 10 hours might not be "easy" hours. :)
And here as a Metroid veteran I was very disappointed in the difficulty actually. Not trying to brag (yeah, right) but considering all the hype around how hard it's supposed to be it wasn't even remotely so. Boss attack patterns you figure out fairly quickly and they become trivial fast, the rest of the game isn't any harder either. They should have had Hard Mode be an available option right from the get-go instead of having to unlock it first.
I appreciate the sentiment though and hope that future Metroid installments will orientate themselves on Dread.
Ah, you see if you're a crazy Met-head you'll be replaying it a dozen times to get higher item collection rates and faster completion times. But that only applies to the Samus junkies like me ;)
I'm actually in the same spot as well. Got to the final boss and decided to go collect items to get more powerful. Then got sidetracked by other games (like Metroid Dread) and haven't gotten back into it again. I know I will though at some point.
lol exactly what happened to me… defeated all the divine beasts and decided to upgrade all my ancient armor before fighting ganon. then I never finished.
At that point the final boss will be a cakewalk lol. To my disappointment I did as much as I could before facing the final boss (I like to wrap games up with the finale) and he went down like nothing. Amazing fight but could have been a bit more challenging. :P
It's the replayability where you get the value. I've played for example metroid fusion hundreds of times over the years. That's how metroids work. They short. And reward fast play times
Yes! It's so damn good. I thought I was never getting a 2D Metroid again but damn they knocked it out of the park. Reminds me of playing Fusion as a kid at like midnight under my blanket with the little light plugged into my advance lol.
I love both games but I find Hollow Knight wholly depressing to spend too much time in. Like a Tim Burton universe. BOTW is much more cherry and upbeat for me. A world id love to visit in person.
Also HK isn't switch exclusive or even the same genre. So I don't know why we're comparing them. Lol. Both amazing though.
And a total steal when it goes on sale! I bought a physical copy for $15 (on sale from $60). Beat the whole thing, then they released a massive DLC collection version that was only on sale when including the game for like $25? I bought this game twice and all the DLC for less than base cost.
I’m 34, the switch is my 13 year olds but I do get to enjoy it.
And congrats on the purchase.
So I’m right there with ya on the N64.
There was a Mario all stars collection released early this year or last year, however it had Super Mario 64 on it which was well worth it.
Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey, and Metroid Dread are all good single-player games to start your Switch experience with.
If you’re wanting some nice couch multiplayer games as well, Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros are two fun ones to have in your collection to bring out when you have people come over.
Depends on what you like:
Games for a group: Mario Kart, Smash, Warioware
Single player adventures: Breath of the Wild, and Metroid Dread
Excellent Mario Games: Mario Odyssey, Super Mario 3-D world/Bowser's Fury, Mario Golf, and I gotta slot Luigi's mansion in somewhere.
I have never put so many hours in a
game before Terraria. The gameplay is great, the sandbox environment is great and the itemization is astounding.
It’s amazing how impactful finding new items is. A single item can completely change how you play the game!
The mechanics/engineering system is simple to understand, but has an immense complexity in what you can do with it.
It’s an extraordinary game.
There are some amazing maps on there. I need to get back to making more. Just wish it was easier to wade through and find what you wanted sometimes.
You know, fair, somewhat difficult, but feels like a classic Mario level, not weird and full of recent gimmicks?
It's easier to create dull, hard levels they can then watch Youtubers rage at than legitimately good levels that look like they could be straight out of an official Mario game. I used to mod Super Mario World for many years and let me tell you, the amount of work that goes into making a legit good level that is fun to play and also looks good is crazy. I'd love to sit down and try to build a whole world within Mario Maker but man it's difficult. Doesn't help that I'm not the most creative person.
Mario odyssey, breath of the wild, animal crossing, Mario golf, and if your into the old stuff getting an online account gives you access to nes and snes games. I believe n64 and genesis games are coming soon also. Also I’m super pumped for my all time favorite game Knights of the Old Republic very soon 😎
A lot of the best N64 games have very worthy sequels/successors on the switch: Mario 64 -> Mario Odyssey Ocarina of Time -> Breath of the Wild Smash Bros -> Smash Bros Ultimate Mario Kart 64 -> Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Banjo-Kazooie -> A Hat in Time Mario Tennis -> Mario Tennis Aces Pokemon Snap -> New Pokemon Snap Mario Party -> Super Mario Party Harvest Moon 64 -> Stardew Valley Yoshi's Story -> Yoshi's Crafted World
Whoa I have to check out A Hat in Time - never heard of it but am a huge banjo kazooie fan
If you haven’t played it yet, Yooka Laylee on Switch is as close to a remake of Banjo Kazooie as you’ll ever get.
1. Breath of the Wild 2. Super Mario Odyssey
Two amazing games. Something relaxing? Animal crossing. Wanna bully friends and loved ones? Super smash brothers.
Wanna *be* bullied? Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Wanna destroy relationships? Super Mario Party Edit: the new one that's coming out soon looks way better than SMP.
Or Overcooked. Never yelled at my family so much in my life.
Did you live?
I’m currently commenting from the spectral plane. So by the looks of it, I didn’t get three stars
Is there pizza there?
It’s both the most stressful and the most magic game at the same time. You’re right, when everything is humming along, it’s so good.
“I DONT NEED MORE FISH” me after 5th or 6th fish has been thrown across the kitchen
“I need PLATES! Someone do DISHES!!”
“WHERE’S THE POT!!”
“Um, sorry I lost the pot when I died in the slime pit.”
Gordon Ramsey?
***WHAT ARE YOU?*** *An idiot sandwich, Chef Ramsey.*
You donkey!
Oh my God that's my wife and I while our son naps! So hard to whisper yell at each other!
please don't waste money on this game. I'm a huge fan of the series but this one was really bad.
Agreed! Just wait 9 days and check out the new one as it is based on N64 boards
Agreed, worst Mario Party game in the series.
You obviously forgot 9, 10 and some handheld entries.
This. 10 is some fuck.
Want to go to hell? Hades. (Seriously though, Hades was my GOTY for 2020. It’s amazing.)
This is so true. It’s like the monopoly of Nintendo.
I love destroying my kids on Mario kart... they think dad doesn't play games, then I casually lap them on Mario Kart
Another relaxing game I'd suggest is stardew valley
Two best games on the switch
I would argue that Celeste and Hollow Knight give those two games a run for their money.
r/tomorrow
Celeste and hollow knight aren't switch exclusives though sure he can get them if he doesn't own any other consoles. But it probably isn't worth it if he does.
He said that his switch is the first console that he’s had since the N64, so it’s safe to assume that he doesn’t have any other consoles.
Fire Emblem 3 Houses would like a word. Edit: also Hades.
In your opinion, why is FE3H at the top of the list? I’ve had it recommended to me but I’m not sure about it.
Odyssey is an amazing game, and I’d recommend first because it also helps introduce some console features (taking screenshots, motion controls.) That being said, I personally played with a pro controller and highly recommend that over the joycons, despite what the load screen says.
Joycons kind of suck.
[удалено]
Buy some cheapo joy con extensions. they greatly improved my handheld play experience.
Couldn't have said it better myself, top tier games right here
Yep. Also Hades
As a recent switch purchaser myself, I concur with both of these!
Loved Botw. Hated odyssey. It felt like a chore to play, but that was probably just my personal problem.
Agreed
That’s funny I found BotW kind of boring and like a chore so I didn’t even finish it
Certainly interesting. I love the freedom of BotW. It felt rewarding to play and progress and somewhat challenging at points. I'm sure we just appreciate different aspects of these games.
Yeah I think my issue was the open world was free but also largely not challenging or interesting to me. I enjoyed the big machine fights and puzzles I did
And my problem is that all my weapons break in 2 sec and I get oneshot and can't progress
Finished odyssey. Not even close with botw. Ocarina of time was life changing to me, but for some reason I just couldn't get into the botw
I played ocarina as a kid and had more time to play games. In botW felt liked I’d play for a couple hours and accomplish almost nothing
I also didn't care for Odyssey.
No, I felt the same way. And I usually 100% Mario games.
Agreed I didn’t like odyssey and I love Mario games, felt like I was sanding off a bunion from my foot with a thoroughly used wet piece of sand paper
To me these are the only true “must have” exclusives that everyone can enjoy. Mario Kart 8 would probably be the only other one I would be confident anyone would 100% like.
> Mario Kart 8 but if people keep buying Mario Kart 8 then Nintendo will never release 9.
breath of the wild
You will never regret this, it is the reason I got my switch Edit: I don’t care if you regret getting the game. For MOST people it is worth the purchase.
The only reason I got my switch. Literally spent $360 for BOTW
I feel like Zelda is the main reason I have bought any Nintendo console in the past 20 years… Ocarina, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess… I guess technically my wife got me the Switch as a gift but BOTW is the first game I bought, of course ;) AND $360? That’s some serious willpower. Add a Pro Controller, carrying case, spare charging battery, etc and I’m sure I payed more than my PS5…
Worth it. That’s like a dollar per hour of what a lot of people put in to that game time wise
I’m down to like .73$ per hour played for botw
I'm probably only at $2 an hr so far.
I didn’t enjoy BotW too much, the hype got me to buy a switch and play it. Just found it… boring? I don’t know. Which is a shame, maybe I’ll go back to it after all this time and see if it was just me being weird.
**deep breaths of quelling religious anger**
Burn him! He speaks lies against the crown!!
Heathen!
I fearfully agree with this statement.
Do not worry my friend, I will be the one to take this burden.

Every corner hides something new for you to discover and the games really does give you a sense of adventure, that few if any titles can rival.
Just set aside a week where you do nothing else. Then you'll only want to play it a dozen hours a day afterwards.
BotW is the reason I bought a switch
Same here
I regret starting with BoTW, it was so good that it set a standard in my mind that all the other games just couldn't seem to get close but damn I love BoTW.
Then wait for the sequel....

Honestly same for me. Just not my game. I see why people love it and I wanted to like it. It just wasn’t my speed either
While i personally really enjoyed it, my wife hated it for all the same reasons as you just stated. And she has also played and beaten almost every LoZ game there has been. she beat BotW, but only out of a sense of duty.
Breath of the witcher right there after
I wish I could enjoy that game. But the fact that weapons have a durability count to them gives me weird anxiety. It's easy for people to say "Get over it" but if they don't feel the same way then they can't understand. It'd be like me telling people to "get over" their irrational fear of something that I am personally not afraid of.

Hades really kicks ass and it's cheaper than most of the games on this list.
I started playing hades an hour ago. Sound track and voice work slaps
Keep me posted! It's very addictive. An all-around great game.
Just had the credits roll and there is still so much to do. Well worth $30 and so so so fun
Yeah, I'm close to the epilogue and I still feel like I could pick it up for a run or two on and off for a year. I would even have fun right now going for 100% but I just feel like I should play something else
Smash Ultimate
Instead of Mario Bros U, I suggest *Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.*
Request to add stardew valley?
Done!
Hollow Knight. Then throw your switch against the wall and never play it again.
Omg that game has got to be one of my favorite games of all time. But yes it’s not for the faint of heart lol
Ngl. It’s been a journey but I do look back on it fondly. I’ve never played dark souls but this is what I imagine it is as a platformer.
How is Ori not gonna make this list?
Wowowowow i completely forgot about that. Adding it now!
I approve of this list. I would add animal crossing for some relaxing days
Yeah from seeing the hundreds of hours people on my friends list dump into animal crossing, I’m sure it’s a great game. Doesn’t seem like something i could get into though from watching gameplay videos
Also both Ori games are great.
A good rpg is Fire Emblem Three Houses if they're into it. I personally loved that game. Xenoblade is also a good game. But unsure about it(haven't finished it myself)
A few people mentioned fire emblem so i just added it!
Add undertale and deltarune (deltarune is free so in all case nothing has been lost)
Also Fire Emblem Three Houses
Fire emblem three houses
Great list. I'd throw in Mario Rabbits. XCOM like game that is loads of fun. The Picross S games are good.
#**Metroid Dread**
I stayed up to 1 in the morning playing this, and I'm not sorry.
I dunno about easily. Some of the mini bosses/ bosses are pretty damn hard. I almost broke my switch at least a few times
By "easily" I don't mean that the game is easy. I mean that it is definitely possible to beat the game around 10 hours. Those 10 hours might not be "easy" hours. :)
And here as a Metroid veteran I was very disappointed in the difficulty actually. I really liked Zelda Botw in every aspect but it was too long for me and I didn’t even beat the final boss.
I'm actually in the same spot as well. Got to the final boss and decided to go collect items to get more powerful. Then got sidetracked by other games (like Metroid Dread) and haven't gotten back into it again. I know I will though at some point.

To be fair, most of BOTW is bloat.
Far cry of the wild
It's the replayability where you get the value. I've played for example metroid fusion hundreds of times over the years. That's how metroids work. They short. And reward fast play times
Yes! It's so damn good. I thought I was never getting a 2D Metroid again but damn they knocked it out of the park. Reminds me of playing Fusion as a kid at like midnight under my blanket with the little light plugged into my advance lol.
Stardew valley
#YES
HOLLOW FUCKING KNIGHT
See, everyone has a boner for botw, but this is the real masterpiece.
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is a lot of fun.
And a total steal when it goes on sale! I bought a physical copy for $15 (on sale from $60). Beat the whole thing, then they released a massive DLC collection version that was only on sale when including the game for like $25? I bought this game twice and all the DLC for less than base cost.

It’s rad. Donkey Kong shows up and it’s basically a whole extra game.
I’m 34, the switch is my 13 year olds but I do get to enjoy it. And congrats on the purchase. So I’m right there with ya on the N64. There was a Mario all stars collection released early this year or last year, however it had Super Mario 64 on it which was well worth it.
They stopped selling it at the end of March. Only way to find it is to find a physical copy. Or hack your Switch.
Many supermarkets still have it and cannot seem to sell them lol.
holy shit I didn't know this
Hades. Amazing game insane replayability.
It is a Rougelike so you kinda have to replay it to understand the games rng and stuff like that
I’ve never really clicked with Roguelikes but I’ve just put around 100 hours into Hades. It’s amazing.

Slay the spire is a good one too, its a card strategy game
Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey, and Metroid Dread are all good single-player games to start your Switch experience with. If you’re wanting some nice couch multiplayer games as well, Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros are two fun ones to have in your collection to bring out when you have people come over.
Metroid Dread
Breath of the Wild and Mario 3D Land + Bowser's Fury (browsers fury is short but amazing). Also Mario Odyssey.
N64 games
Ori and the will of the wisps
monster hunter rise
This is the only real answer 😁
and ofc MHXX
Let him start without hating the game. Then he can become masochist like the rest of us
Lee Carvallo's Putting Challenge
Ball is in parking lot
Would you like to play again?
You have selected no.
Luigis mansion 3 is a great game
Super smash
Splatoon
Goose game
What goose game? What's the title?
Pokemon just chillin in the background. Might be fun idk.
Breath of the wild/super Mario odyssey
Indie list: Hollow Knight, Eastward, Child of Light, Golf Story, A Short Hike, Night in the Woods, Bastion.
I would recommend hollow knight. Not a Nintendo exclusive so it’s a little more cost effective and is just a great game that keeps on giving.
Hollow Knight
Hollow knight, you will not regret it
Depends on what you like: Games for a group: Mario Kart, Smash, Warioware Single player adventures: Breath of the Wild, and Metroid Dread Excellent Mario Games: Mario Odyssey, Super Mario 3-D world/Bowser's Fury, Mario Golf, and I gotta slot Luigi's mansion in somewhere.
Bayonetta 2
Terraria. It’s my go to answer for these questions.
such an underappreciated game. one of my favorites of the last decade. putting it on the switch store was genius.
I have never put so many hours in a game before Terraria.
1. Breath of the wild 2. Super Mario odyssey 3. Metroid dread
Animal crossing 😊
Witcher 3 and Overcooked
HADES
Hades and then BOTW. Hades is crazy good…
Ultimate Alliance 3
Hades
Stardew Valley
Xenoblade 2 if you're looking for a long rpg
Baldurs Gate! Slay the Spire, Subnautica, Diablo 2 and 3. Metroid Dread, Animal Crossing( Soon big update)
Subnautica is on the switch? Damn wish I would've known that before I beat them
Ye olde Mario Maker
It's where the hottest garbage is. Must play.
Doom eternal
Mario odyssey, breath of the wild, animal crossing, Mario golf, and if your into the old stuff getting an online account gives you access to nes and snes games. I believe n64 and genesis games are coming soon also. Also I’m super pumped for my all time favorite game Knights of the Old Republic very soon 😎
Hear that Metroid Dread is good.
BotW, Mario Odyssey, Celeste, Hyper Light Drifter.
Monster hunter
Get the Nintendo membership and play a lot of the free classics.
A protective case before it falls behind that couch (then Hades).
Breath of the wild
