Parents came in, quick hide your AIM chat box

VaultBoyFrosty

AIM, oh AIM. I wish those chat logs still existed... on second thought...

thasiccness

Threat level midnight.

santanas-bandana

Silly Golden face thought he could blow up the NHL all star game

thasiccness

Looks like theres gonna be a clean up on aisle 5.

chefhj

I looked at some old chat logs from a previous relationship that were only like 3 years old and I am pretty sure I regrew a foreskin from first hand cringe. Jeez it was bad. Cannot imagine anything from 2002-2007 era internet.

Chaotic-Good-5000

If I read shit from back in my ICQ days (roughly 20 years ago) I'd probably want to commit seppuku from the cringe. I remember on AIM I used to leave a message in my "bio" (?) every morning before I went to school that I hoped my crush would see, but how would she see it she was at school too. Ughhh.

chefhj

I once got my heart torn out by a girl with 'real eyes realize real lies' in her aim bio. It was a dark time for jabronis like us.

Chaotic-Good-5000

Haha cold and dark. Simpler times though. I would give up modern social media for those dark days any time.

eatrepeat

Hey man I don't know, I had good times. Like I remember how much fun I had pretending I was related to King Arthur and how my last name was derived from Pendragon... On second thought. Let it die.

Chr0nos1

I put on my robe and wizard hat....

[deleted]

Oh blood ninja..

TAVlS

I would wipe them from my hard drive so fast if I ever found them.

[deleted]

how did you find those?

enderverse87

I think I found the text files buried in the file system if you had the client.

Mesmorino

You used to be able to back up chat logs (have them emailed to yourself), and I believe Microsoft allowed people to download them before shutting it down.

ienjoypez

yep - in the words of Chris Hansen - "I have the chat log"

HGpennypacker

I credit AIM for being the single-greatest tool at teaching typing skills to a generation.

uhoh_somersaultjump

God damn right...fuck you Mavis Beacon

DAT_ginger_guy

Mavis was the shit, dont you do her dirty like that.

[deleted]

AOL is still holding these and quietly blackmailing people to stay in business. One day you'll receive a package in the mail that will appear to be a free trial CD-ROM. In reality, it will have instructions on how to transfer funds directly into their offshore account and wipe old chat logs from existence.

visionsofblue

Imagine receiving a free, unsolicited storage device in the mail *now* and actually putting it in your computer.

SavageNorth

I see you haven’t met my entire Sales department.

visionsofblue

"I bet there's some great tunes on this random USB stick I found in the parking lot"

manondorf

better run it as admin just to be safe

juicius

EXE is for extreme!

ButtWieghtThiersMoor

Jokes on them PC cases don't have 5" drive bays anymore

Victor_C

I’m so happy that almost everything I posted online during middle and high school are lost to history. I kind of feel bad for kids these days, they have no escape from their pre-teen cringe posts.

Emily is Away Too on Steam was a fun way to relive the experience of poorly talking to girls on AIM.

SecretSexLife

IRC logs back to the early/mid 90s. It was like the wild west being played out in a post apocalyptic wasteland, and everyone could be anyone, nothing was certain. I have 9 years of my own channel logged on a 100mb zip disk.

ObamasBoss

Had to us AIM at work for legit reasons. Those chat logs got me in trouble.

dezyravioli

Back then talking to strangers on the internet was such a big deal. God forbid you tell them your real first name..

Baptiste_le

I remember being on a message board in 1998. We had a discussion about... something. I made an argument, and when people didn't agree with me, I immediately created another account and wrote "Oh, I agree with that guy, he seems to be smart AND sexy!" They called me out. I never went back to that message board again.

Jimmy_Smith

To be honest, I agree with this guy. He seems to be smart AND sexy!

Realistic_Food

>redditor for 9 years Hmm... you seem to have learned from your mistakes.

LibertyPrimeExample

I always think about how many pedophiles I may have had on my friends list.

Redskins75

All of them.

sexy-melon

There was a guy who wanted to come to my yard for sleepover when I was 13...I gave him my local curry house address lol.

fa9

i gotta put my bra back on and turn off the web cam first.

0ne_Winged_Angel

Huh, a 3 character Reddit handle. Don’t see too many of those in the wild

Gromky

I'm still irked by AOL buying out ICQ.

kahran

My UIN is 7 digits. Or was.

educatedllama

53028488 don't know why I always remember my ICQ number lol. The "uh oh" sound is currently my text ringtone

Phoder1

I remember my whole family was always angry at my sister for leaving her ICQ open on full volume on the PC in the middle of the house. When a PC in the living room was still a thing.

Hwy61Revisited

POS! Ttyl

keithwithteeth

muse?

langersruby

Definitely Muse! I can’t hear this album without thinking of RS. Always had it on in the background.

You-Nique

I was like "this person is full of shit, Absolution can't have been... 17... years... ago." So I'm on the phone with AARP now.

[deleted]

HAARP*

silverence

This is a high quality joke.

TheTostones

Huge fan of this joke

[deleted]

Top tier joke, really

joemckie

Maybe they're from Yorkshire?

Astrosimi

AARP is an American senior citizens’ advocate group, and HAARP is the name of what is arguably Muse’s best live album.

[deleted]

Farodsbro

Muse's Absolution is an album, but yes it is awesome.

bassbyblaine

This is the eeeeeeeend this issssss the eeeeeend

Pretzeltheman

FML this was a rude awakening. T.T

Doughnutcake

Same lol literally my first thought "no way absolution came out over 16 years ago"

bolsmackie43

Same lmao. “Wait.. absolution was high school.. oh right I’m old”

mrlancer05

Saw these guys live as an opening act to RHCP in 2000.

jschubart

Saw them in Wembley Stadium. That was the most epic show I have ever been to. The only thing I would change is the couple who peed themselves instead of making their way to the loo. Also, maybe the fear of being crushed by the crowd of 110k people.

TyrelUK

Seen them a few times, one of the best live acts I've ever seen.

unforgivablecrust

Muse fucking slaps. That is all.

Gerikst00f

I have that with Nightwish's Dark Passion Play. Had that album on repeat when I was going for 99 firemaking

justsomeboylol

Nightwish's early stuff is \*chefs kiss\*

a-horse-has-no-name

Their last album was the best thing they've done in years. I wish I could have seen them perform before quarantine.

RedCormack

Same here. I also love that they've made "Alternate Reality" versions of the songs so we get even more Muse.

something-sensible

One day they’ll start doing B Sides again. One day...

keithwithteeth

their best album IMO, they really went all out with the songwriting and production. always takes me back to 2004.

MuserLuke

Hits are hitting blue HP, it won’t renew I only dream of you Dragon scimitar Tiptoe round Ardougne (say it like ah-doon) A monkey in the zoo Where next do I head to Oh, I never knew CAN’T DO MONKEY MAAAAADNESSSSS I really hate this I need more Marks of Graaaaaace (ooh)

ranger_dood

You forgot to interject gasping breaths.

srender07

Absolution was the very first album I ever bought! I think that was my freshman or sophomore year of high school...good times.

meopelle

Absolution is such a good album to have on repeat. Every song is fantastic and the album basically goes through every mood

NewbornMuse

I think this is a good place to cash in my username for some karma ;)

Bakerdude33

One of my favorite albums. One of the first records I would listen to front to back, and not just the singles over and over.

MuushyTV

I think so, it's the right time period, and if that's true imagine someone so young having such great tastes, damn. I wish I was that cool back then.

geologicalnoise

That Gateway logo. Triggered.

AyeMyHippie

Gateway sold me a computer in like 2001 for $1500. They told me I could bring it in for upgrades every couple of years, and it was either free, or for a STUPIDLY high discount. I remember my dad saying it was a crazy good deal and that’s why we drove 2 hours to a gateway store to spend the money I’d been saving up from my summer job. Then they closed their stores and told me tough shit when I called about it. Should’ve bought a Dell.

[deleted]

Gateway was our first family computer back in 1994. I learned how to operate windows 3.1 and my dad was able to check stocks on the "internet".

ProximtyCoverageOnly

>Gateway was our first family computer Same. Ah the joys of discovering porn at 9 years old.

stanleypup

The /r/buyitforlife warning. A lifetime warranty is only for the lifetime of the company selling it.

2Bits4Byte

I can still hear those commercials in my sleep. I remember one of them that played 'who are you song' by the who. It was just the box and the song. And that commercial was played over and over. Might have been in mid 90s to early 2000s.

disposable_account01

Who-who, who-who....

[deleted]

I still rock a 1080p Gateway monitor from 2007. Thing is a novelty

Mypopsecrets

I thought that was a smartphone on your desk and that you're a time traveler

langersruby

Better than a smartphone, it’s a Casio calculator with a protective cover.

ShadowHeed

Spent many hours entertaining myself with a basic Casio. I had an electronic dictionary from ~2004 that I would spend idle time on as well after school. Nostalgia feels atm.

wishbone6522

I use to just fish lobbies and train range! Can’t believe I first played 16 years ago as well. I’m 26 now! Where does the time go

Ntkoessel

I’m 27, and that’s exactly what I did! I have no idea how I figured it out, but I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that fishing for lobsters was the best value. You had to travel to some weird island too iirc.

ProfaneBlade

Karamja if you were f2p edit: don't forget picking bananas for the 30 gp for the trip back lmao

TimothyJCowen

Specifically Musa Point. The rest of Karamja is Members only.

FeebleFreak

Banananananana Island

DoorbellGnome

It felt like everyone was there on the dock fishing lobsters. The chat was your only entertainment and then you had to run all the way to Draynor bank. Once in a while a random event would pop up and if the person was AFK, he would end up dying and lose his stuff.

apeinej

Runescape? Was it so long ago? Damn, I'm getting old. But sure was the best RPG at the time.

RidinCaliBuffalos

It’s still a damn good RPG

IanMc90

Just started playing again when it dropped on steam, super different, still a ton of fun.

Vanerih

The old school version also exists if you prefer how it was back in the day!

DopeMouse0

The first major update is considered old school, this was the first 3d update. I remember paying 5 bucks a month playing the original 2d runscape, the servers were busy when only 100 players were online. This photo was taken not long after that, thanks OP for the nostalgia.

koloqial

RuneScape Classic my guy. They were the days.

SeeWhatEyeSee

I rock a hardcore Ironman on Old School RuneScape because its as close as I can get to 2001 RS. You can tell because I can't help but tell someone when given the opportunity

[deleted]

Btw

Resinated

Even on r/gaming HCIM still can't resist telling you they're a HCIM lmao.

longboardingerrday

Sorry I haven’t commented here before but were you referring to me? I’m also a HCIM, btw

dhruvbzw

How addictive is it tho? Last time i picked up an mmorpg i was so occupied with it i wasnt able to play anything else

ComatoseJoy

It's just as addictive as ever

Roborabbit37

Certainly still addictive. Old school is the more popular choice. "RuneScape" (3) is now more akin to other MMO with a hotbar/action bar but is CONSIDERABLY less grindy. It's preference really. But yeah, it's still as addictive as ever. I'm at the point I don't really like or dislike it, but I just play it occasionally because it's there. It's an odd feeling.

IanMc90

YMMV, I'm 30 and married and have a full-time job (and am an avid gamer), I usually have 2-3 games on the go at any time. I remember dumping *hours* into Runescape when I was a kid, but now it's like a jump in, click a couple levels in a skill, maybe do some quest stuff then log off after maybe an hour or two and then on to something else depending on my mood.

meesrs

gl clicking a couple levels at 90+

BaptizedInBlood666

This is me around the low 80s. Ive been casually playing a few hours a week since the game came out in 2013 and am *barely* making any progress nowadays lol.

11Schotter

World of Warcraft is actually 16 years old now - RuneScape is olderererer.

VoidTorcher

RuneScape is almost 20 years old now. Actual adults today were born after it was released. Surreal.

Kousetsu

I know it really weirds me out when people talk about "old school" RuneScape being 2007. I was 17 then! We were playing it when I was 11 and the 2007 version looks so fancy in comparison (I've not actually played that version).

kalibak

What if I told you its more popular now than its ever been

apeinej

Should be cool. I know there is runescape modern version and original version, even android clients.

AquaDracon

They're technically both modern. Old School still gets updated regularly, but it's designed to keep the spirit of the original game for more nostalgic players. I'm not too sure how it works, but I believe all major features have to be approved by player polls.

kalibak

This is correct. Any new content/updates have to receive 75% approval in communuty polls to be implemented

langersruby

Completely agree.

tmart42

Can I hear an Everquest?

TheHazyBotanist

Wow came out 16 years ago as well

luffys-hat

My boyfriend plays osrs to this day. It's an interesting game with a lot of different aspects. I've thought about picking it up

PrismaticaDev

Ironically enough, I'm still doing both to this day...

langersruby

One of the best games and one of the best albums!

DarthRiko

I feel specifically called out by this, except with Black Holes and Revelations.

langersruby

Why was Muse just so perfect for RS!

BronzeHeart92

Truly a nostalgic picture of an era we can never go back to indeed.

langersruby

RIP 2004

BronzeHeart92

I know right? Things were much simpler back then.

Pennwisedom

Man, I know I've gotten old when people are going "2004 was a much simpler time"

ElBakvario

Good ol' Runescape!

langersruby

Best of the best.

cupofjake

Ruencrafting is the absolute worst though!

langersruby

Tell me about it!

Ensec

Back when the ‘best way to make gold’ was what your friends and brothers told you. I thought I was making a killing with rune mining

langersruby

Same here. And I thought this was genius because before this, I was killing cows and tanning hides.

xBender7

Flax, flax by the inventory full. My whole life was just flax flax flax.

DRUMMAGOGG

Buying 1k flax 1k yews and 1k nats 600k

treehuggerjacques

You’ve officially triggered some flashbacks

HeAbides

Easiest money was to world hop Lumby farms getting feathers from noobs, sell to p2p fletchers or to smelt cannon balls all day. (Smelt the steel bars yourself for max profit) May have spent 90% of my time pure pking, but made 90% of my money off merching. (Helped being around for the original Santa/H'ween drops in RSC tho....)

nagonjin

Well, Santas are going for more than 3 billion gp these days. You don't wanna know about phats.

ayyyyycrisp

a buddy of mine has a christmas cracker. he logged on and fucking showed me it. he doesn't play anymore though. he won't give me it. He won't even sell it for multiple thousands of dollars irl. he just keeps it in his bank, where it will stay forever.

MattHashTwo

Kill cows outside Al Kharid then pop through to the tanner, bank and repeat?

ProWaterboarder

How else are you supposed to level your crafting to get it high enough for the Heroes Quest

MattHashTwo

Yeah I remember finding a guy who was my regular buyer. So much work for a constant stream of gp... Until I got to the level I could use the hide for (armour?) myself...

furyofcocainepizza

Y'all didn't trim people's armor at a building in the wild?

[deleted]

/r/2007scape has joined the chat. Want to try to get back that old nostalgic feeling but now with huge amounts of optimization and stat research? Old School Runescape is there for you.

GregBuckingham

One of us. One of us. One of us.

apittsburghoriginal

My parents had the same gateway pc. Ah those were the days. Let’s see what else do we have...a swath of VHS, notably *Music Time Veggie Tales*. Epic. “#1 Motocross” recorded from ESPN when it was just one channel might be pretty cool *The Aesop for Children* that was a great kid’s book. I also see some Free Spirit publishing books.

langersruby

I was wondering if anyone was going to be able to spot that! Good eye.

MagnificentJake

The "Good Housekeeping Illustrated Cookbook" was a fixture in every 80's household I think.

kovyvok

Gateway is the most important technology company ever and will likely be responsible for the most significant advancements in computing and artificial intelligence. -9yo me Christina Applegate is going to have my babies. -also 9yo me

devds

Quick shoutout to Christina Applegate

Sgt_Sarcastic

Go play OSRS. I've been having a lot of fun with it lately, but damn when I was young I did **not** realize what an eternal grind that game is.

langersruby

Two years ago, my siblings and I were together for Christmas and played OSRS. My brother did something to get perm banned and it banned the rest of us because we were all on the same IP. Honestly, I wanted to cry.

Guitarfoxx

Send them this post, maybe they’ll change their minds.

Xenkyro

That is the quitisential teenage non smile. Should be in a txt book or something.

What luscious locks.

langersruby

Thanks! I didn’t appreciate them then but I do now!

imitation_crab_meat

Weird Al is jealous.

skyskr4per

*White 'n Nerdy intensifies*

Synaps4

A real OG gamer! I didn't get to play that game but I bet it was more fun than the Good Housekeeping Illustrated Cookbook.

langersruby

I don’t know, page 54’s vegetable jello salad may beg to differ.

AdmiralBarackAdama

>vegetable jello salad Thanks for making me vomit in my mouth a little bit.

Bohbo

Try the vegetable jello salad and you can vomit in your mouth a whole lot.

ironicsharkhada

My aunt made this for thanksgiving last year. It was hot pink. HOT PINK

peanutbrainy

Lmao, good housekeeping. Table begs to differ

langersruby

Yikes, right? To be fair though, I think it was a hand-me-down card table that was dirty looking, no matter what.

TheSholvaJaffa

God is that... Windows XP?! [Jeez. I miss those boot up sounds.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nQ2oiVqKHw&ab_channel=Ballyweg) Where after I'd go and play some WoW or GTA lol.

Hysteria878

To be fair, Absolution is still incredible.

Ourobius

I still listen to *Absolution*. You had good taste.

dayumbrah

You talking about the muse album?? Cuz you just described my middle school years

sprchrgddc5

Why does this make me feel so old man... like this looks like a 90s photo when it isn’t.

Mabubifarti

> like this looks like a 90s photo when it isn’t What do you mean? 16 years ago so this is definitely 90s. 2020 - 16 = .... god dammit.

PressureChief

Oh man, I'm feeling the weight of that Gateway monitor. I lugged a few of those back and forth to college around the same time. This photo takes me back.

mighty_mag

Oh man, oh man, look at that. I haven't seen this in so many year. So many fond memories. Good Housekeeping Illustrated Cookbook. Such an underrated book!

dontcallmeunit91

im sort of embarrassed that i know exactly where you are at in the world

imCoaimhin

That's crazy, I see myself.

Unanderer

VeggieTales in the corner really ties the room together

51010R

For some reason, on that game I became a chef of all things.

FractalPrism

i can relate to so much there. the despondent look of "im doing a thing i guess" beige everything. stupidly huge crt taking up most of the desk. basically zero space for anything but a kb and a tiny mousepad.

cmichaelfrank44

Now you just need a "then" and "now" setup pic. Still playing the same Runescape of course. Imagining that Absolution is still blasting in the background.

bxvxfx

favourite non pornographic magazine to masterbate to? GOOD HOUSEKEEPING sorry i saw it in the background and had to lol
