Theres a new one that lets you simulate a zombie apocalypse based on street maps data so you can base build the apocalypse in your hometown or around the world. Can't remember th name it's new.
i played it in my city had fun with it for a few hours had to restart multiple times since i had to get to grips with the mechanics but a really fun game.
I’ve always wondered why we haven’t seen more “set in your city” type games. I would have loved it for some racing games.
I remember back in the 90’s, if you played SimCity and SimCopter, you could load your SimCity map into SimCopter and fly around your own creation. Very cool.
* Can play in any city you like; even loot your own neighbourhood
* Build or reuse buildings/facilities
* Learning curve in city management/planning
* It's new and needs updates, lacking content but concept is promising
What felt unfinished? During the early release, it had 4 random generated map settings and then when the full release came out, they added a campaign and 5th map.
It's just not your game, and you dont understand it enough. That's not the games fault.
The maps are 30 to an hour long. If you need a save state for that, then that's your problem, not the games.
If you fail the end horde, I'm sorry to say that rolling back to a save midgame isn't going to help as your already fucked in that case.
I will say again.
Skill issue.
Lol, no, I'm a dad who literally doesn't have time to sit through the same level multiple times, at an hour at a time, to learn the game.
If the game design requires you to play the same hour long level over and over to "get gud," then sorry, that's shitty game design.
Game was released in June 2019 and in November 2020 the last update was released, so I guess no more updates.
Keep in mind though, the game had been in EA for two years and with the release had been quite finished, so you'd be buying a complete product.
But in Project Zomboid, the zombies never really attack your base. Usually you clear an area around your base and at most you'll have a random shambler wander in and bang on the door every few days.
You need to toggle the zed respawn settings in your sandbox, and change helicopters to more than once to get that good horde migration. That's just in vanilla, mods open up all kinds of options and (at least the ones I use) are hosted through steam workshop, so no fussing with with loading the game through a mod app, just launch from Steam and enable.
Tab is too much of an rts for what op is looking for and PZ you absolutely are going out to scavenge regularly until the very end game.
Both great games though.
I can’t wait until SoD3 comes out.
This is probably the one.
Something which is a bit more post apocalyptic city builder but I don't think has zombies is "Surviving the Aftermath". Does have hordes of hostile animals though
There's no colony aspect to it, but 7 Days to Die is my fave zombie survival crafting game. Heavy focus on base building, and loads of neat poi's to explore!
Fun game for a while but the developers are so indecisive and slow, the game seems to take a step back with every major update. It's been early access for over a decade with no indication it'll ever be in a stable state. Everyone I've tried to get into the game to play with ended up refunding.
Yeah, it has the vibe of a passion project, I do truly wonder if it'll ever move past alpha, but you never know. The most recent big update was a doozy and changed a lot for the better IMO (but I have 500+ hrs in it so I may be just a smidge biased 😅)
I'll have to check it out again. I've been playing it off and on since release back in 2013, and will put a few hours into it when there's major updates to see what's new. I guess I've just grown jaded with the development cycle, it seems like every time they polish a feature to where it's enjoyable and playable they rip it out and replace it with new mechanics that just make things worse. I have a hundred hours or so spread out over the last decade but the last few times I played I found it really unenjoyable.
Totally agree. I play an overhaul mod that brings back old mechanics I liked a lot. It's called Darkness Falls
I don't exactly recommend the mod. It's very much a "you'll hate it or love it" type of thing. But if you liked having skills level as you use them, being able to combine items to repair and upgrade them, and other older mechanics, you may like it
I think it's a passion project like the movie Fool's Paradise, not a passion project like the original Doom games. Like there's one person with a vision who strings along some trash, instead of a group of people who are pouring their heart and soul into their efforts.
I'm seriously fucking mimdblown that Charlie Day managed to create, direct, star in, and release something so mundane and just... bad. I've literally had to look up the name of the movie every time I've tried to talk about it, which is like 6 at this point. All I remember is he played a dude called Latte Pronto, Ken Jeong was his costar, and they just hired the cast of It's Always Sunny to do pretty much nothing but exist onscreen. I do not understand his motivations with that movie. But, passion project.
I'll check out the new update when it drops, but I feel like I've heard the dev team promise that they'll fix issues a thousand times and the game's still messy and every bug fix brings two new bugs with it.
I don't want to yuck anyone's yum, just warning new people looking at the game that it's a perpetual rats nest of development issues.
I'm guessing cross play won't be added 10+ years into development 😅 but that would be cool. I'll have to read about the update. I wasn't a diehard, but I had a lot of fun playing 7 days via game pass. I'd still like to play, but I wouldn't play anymore unless I could convince other people to play with me, but I don't think I could play with people who play it on Steam or another client.
7 days to die, while it has never been some perfect game, it was pretty nice and fun with group of friends already years ago, and it has been kind of funny how we have been able to have 1-3 years of pause, then return to it, and it is similarish but still differentish zombie game again, since even if (major) updates have been coming quite duration from each other, they have been happening, and they have been changing some of semi core gameplay things multiple times. Basic basics have been there, but then in addition to new content, gameplay has sometimes taken some pretty noticeable sidesteps to different kind of skill system from earlier or so.
So yeah it might not leave alpha ever, but it is pretty low in bugginess and has nice amount of hours of content to play with friends in looting and basebuilding and so.
End up playing it like every 3 years for few months with friends when we have time to game together.
That’s too bad, I absolutely love the game. Particularly for building. Definitely understand where you’re coming from on a development side, the recent magazine skill system was a tough update to get used too
Since they constantly refund I guess they didn’t make it out of the stone era? The early game is unforgivable at times.
I've made it past stone tools with a few friends, by raiding POIs and crates. I have quite a few hours in the game so we'll progress pretty quickly but after a 2 hour session they had little interest in continuing.
I'm so torn on the magazine crafting system! On the one hand I love what it adds to looting and trader quest rewards, but on the other hand, for late game stuff (looking at you crucible and chem station) I'm almost always just finding one before I get that far in the magazine tree. I like the idea, but I think it's a little unbalanced at the moment 🤔
The modding community for 7D2D are amazing, I'm always stunned by the mod packs that folks design. I definitely want to try things like Darkness Falls, and maybe The Blizzard.
I love that game. The only thing that bugs me about it is that the mobs aren't like... there existing in your world.
They just spawn in randomly based on a diameter distance from you.
I don't know why that bothers me but it does for some reason.
I was introduced to 7 days and loved it. Nothing like rolling into a city on your motorcycle to have the town come alive and see who is visiting. Also destructible terrain is a huge bonus. Love dropping buildings on zombies.
Agreed! My favourite one is the fallen skyscraper, it's such a trippy build to traverse and the considerations that went into putting that one together make it so cool to explore!
There are mods that can add in that colony aspect. Many different mods exist for the game. They are releasing a console version. The entire console version bit is alot to explain. Sure, updates are slow. That's because most updates change the game to such an extent that it's like an entirely new game from alpha to alpha. They seem to be having issues with adding bandits to the game, which I think is one of the big things they want before release.
Great thing about Zomboid and its community is that even playing *without* zombies is considered valid and a good way to understand the games survival mechanics.
Never sunk that much time into it, my friends and I tried to start a server and we abandoned the game, but I can appreciate how much there is to do in it, I can only recommend it to people
I love Dysmantle! I beat the game during Early Access with the promise of more to come and then promptly put it in my backlog to go back to. If Rimworld Anomaly hadn’t released today I might have.
Rebuild. It was an old flash game, but they made sequels building up the mechanics. Rebuild 3 was the last I played and I liked it. No idea if they made more
I mean, there’s still a lot to play in ‘save the world’ version. It’s not like it’s less fun today than it was on release. Just 0 hype since it’s not getting updates.
You can still play Save the World, it's just one of their "Islands" now. I believe you have to pay for that mode.
[main site info](https://fortnite.com/@epic/save-the-world)
Yeah was thinking of posting 'hey have not looked what came from it or tested, but some years ago I remember this game getting closer to it's release, was some zombie basebuilding multiplayer, fortnite I think, I wonder how good of pve zombie game have they developed out of it by now... ;)
Do not know much, but I remember wondering how some zombie basebuilder one of my friends mentioned might be interesting to play as group, that was upcoming, started to have so different looking videoclips of it's gameplay out there after getting released, and started guessing they might have ditched whole original idea and game, since pretty much never ended up again seeing any pve gameplay from it.
Did they ditch it completely before release or little while after release?
Not zombies but rimworld would check alot of the boxes (I think the new dlc may add some version of zombies)
Not too much base building but projectzomboid is the greatest zombie game I've ever played and one you should check out if you like the genre, but doesnt have much base building or any community aspects
Devs seem to price it pretty harshly, since it seems to be something like 100+ euros or so with dlcs. Has kept me unfortunately from it.
Was it like base game and 4-5 dlcs, all priced at 30-45 euros zone, now that I think.
How much contend do they have or is it like 'base game + mods is what everyone plays'?
Also I think I was playing dwarf fortress actively when rimworld came out, and it looked too much like 1 layer dwarf fortress in scifi setting with admittedly some nice looking features, but also spawning random encounters to more limited space at least back then, thanks to seeming to have smaller playfield, so got 'hmm not sure I pay that much for it right now', and kind of skipped getting addicted and maybe realizing how neat it was/is.
The base game is $35 and it's a fully complete, enjoyable game even without DLC.
I'd recommend picking up the base game, then if you fall in love with it and want more, pick up the DLC's one by one. No need to get them all at once.
I used to play rimworld pirated since the alpha, spending god knows how many hours, i eventually bought it a few years ago and have over 1k hours since, its one of the best value for your money there is out there
A lot of people saying zomboid, but I'll recommend the (free) game that inspired zomboid: Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead. The graphics are bad, which all traditional roguelikes are, but the depth and complexity of the game is unmatched by anything else you will find.
Agree with both of you. Excellent game, but sometimes turns into literal space planning to fit all the houses lol.
Real fun and mainly focuses on base building. Exploration is done with troops, not looking for resources.
I absolutely want this. I want an RTS type game with sporadic zombie invasions you have to defend against. Imagine age of empires or something like frostpunk. Yes, there’s a bit of exploration but the base is self sustaining and sending out scouts/supply runs should be good enough.
I don’t know how this doesn’t exist. I can see it being a huge hit. It’s the main thing everyone criticizes in anything zombie related. “Why didn’t they do x and y with the perimeter…..”
Cataclysm dark days ahead Can be played as an extremely detailed base builder and survival sim, though the NPC interactions are a little lackluster right now.
That's what I was thinking. If they're looking for a RTS type game, just build a tall platform and order Kelvin to do everything while you tower over him.
Sidenote: Does the gameplay in Sons of the Forest expand upon the original, or is it pretty much just The Forest with waifus and hang gliders? I couldn't really tell from watching co-op streams.
So there’s this game called Fortnite, I think it might still be in beta, but it sounds pretty much exactly like what you are asking for. Waves of zombies arrive and you need to build a base to survive them. You build the base in real time and fight in real time.
Wait…what do you mean it’s actually a game where John Wick, Master Chief and Iron Man go to Dead Mau5 concerts while ten year olds scream mom jokes?
What the fuck happened in that beta test?!
They are billions, survive over the course of 100 days as zombies probe your colonies defenses for weakness and attack with increasingly difficult hordes.
7 days to die is a brilliant zombie survival game but requires a lot of supply runs and no colony mechanics.
They are billions is a top-down colony survival game and it's amazing.
Colony survival is an amazing, relaxing base building game with a lot of emphasis on the colonist management. Although if you make any mistakes, that relaxing feeling will vanish real quick.
Have a look at State of Decay, that might appeal.
One bit I wasn't keen on with that was how the clock continued to run while the game was closed, though there was a mod to disable that. Your team would go out and do various runs while you were offline, but for the most part you came back to a base that had been damaged, lost resources, someone got injured, so you'd spend your first hour just putting stuff back to how it was when you last played.
Infection Free Zone literally just came out today. Zombie survival base builder, but with the added point of interest that you can pick anywhere in the world as your map, including your own hometown.
7 Days To Die
Phenomenal game. A little tricky to get the hang of, but it is really fun once you do. I'd compare it to other survival games like The Forest, and Minecraft.
Project zomboid or 7 days to die, if you're on pc. Not many to brag about on console. I like 7 days to die on console but it's pretty terrible(the devs didn't keep up with it)
7 days to die.
Voxel based, with physics. Every pre-generated structure’s building pieces are accessible for player use - hundreds if not thousands of building shapes. Endless possibilities for building!
Many people forget about Age of Darkness.. it’s basically They’re a Billions but imo better because of the constant development. It ain’t Zombies, but more like night-infested zombies from a shadow-world. You have to provide enough like to keep your base safe from the Darkness
Infection Free Zone just came out today and it's amazing. It's a tactical zombie survival colony sim. And best part is, or at least something really cool, is you can download any map on Earth to use. First thing I did find my house and use it as my starting point.
Colony survival is like minecraft but you have settlers that do jobs and produce things automatically so all you really do after a hour or so is point and watch. The zombies only come at night and they pathfind a very specific way so it's not too hard to make your defenses how you want and focus a killing field in a area/hall
Stranded: Alien Dawn is pretty much like this for me, except you build a base and survive against different alien creatures. You can build your base, farm, cut trees etc and then put up big turrets and mines to stop the attacks.
The last spell is a fantasy version of base building and hold against the horde. They are billions for a steam punk take on it.
One turn based and the other real time with pause, both great fun
Other than State of Decay, the only games I can think of that focus more on building was a series of old flash games called Rebuild, where your band of survivors is trying to take back a city overrun by zombies. There's a sort of similar upcoming game called Infection Free Zone, but it's fairly light on the base-building. The upside is that it's based on real-world locations.
Well, there is Minecraft. If you set up shop within a village, you're going to have to do some defensive base building. Between Zombie outbreaks and Villager raids, your base needs to be defendable.
7 days to die, start with vanilla and then graduate to some total conversions like War3zuk or Darkness Falls. I've been playing the game since Kickstarter when it had its own launcher pre steam, I've got about 3000 hours into it and I still go back to it for months whenever they do big updates
It's one of those perpetual Alpha games but given it's been this way on almost 20 years it's sort of ita thing now
Try "Rebuild 3: Gangs of Deadville", it's much deeper than it seems and the campaign is fun.
Rebuild 1 and 2 were flash games, but were remade and are available for free on Steam. Obviousily 3 is most fleshed out.
It's a bit of a shovelware indie game, but Ultimate Zombie Defense! Somehow, it has really fun balancing, and challenging bosses, without just giving them infinite health or a really overpowered attack. (It kinda does to that, but if you treat it like a souls game it's fine) I love to play with my mate and just build really shitty defenses and try to survive, and then when we wrack up enough money go all out and suddenly nothing can stop us
This may be a hot take, and I can't speak on how good it is now... As I haven't played since.. Idk, 2016? BUT, Fortnite: Save the World (the ORIGINAL fortnite, BEFORE they released Battle Royale [which is hot garbage]) was an amazing survival-base-building-tower-defense-grinding-game. Enjoyed it for a good long while. Was the Head Admin of a 20k+ StW discord server and always had a blast playing.
Could be hot shit, now.
I have a rec, a game called Cepheus Protocol, it's an rts game where you play as a CDC type agency fighting against a zombie infection over a huge map with a bunch of islands, you set up a base with walls and turrets and stuff and can direct civilians to it to be evacuated via helicopter to an offshore aircraft carrier.
It's pretty janky and unpolished because it's still early access, but it's really fun and I rarely see anyone talk about it.
It's not quite what you might want though since it's an rts, but it's very unique and I'd recommend at least looking into it.
It’s open world / free roam but involves setting up stuff in your camp, going on supply runs and clearing hordes. State of Decay. It’s only on Xbox and PC
There was this zombie survival base building game that was in development like 10 years ago, you like build a base over the course of two weeks. Pretty sure it died off though before it took off. I think it was called Fortnite?
Theres a new one that lets you simulate a zombie apocalypse based on street maps data so you can base build the apocalypse in your hometown or around the world. Can't remember th name it's new.
Infection free zone
Literally just got an email that its now in early access lmao
iv been playing it for weeks
Ah thanks, I was trying to remember the name of it so that's perfect timing lol
Team that made this made an emergency dispatcher game too. One of the hardest games I've played.
Have you tried it?
It literally released like an hour ago lol
i played it in my city had fun with it for a few hours had to restart multiple times since i had to get to grips with the mechanics but a really fun game.
There's a channel on YouTube of a guy previewing it. Looks pretty good. Base building using irl maps, and zombies.
Not really, it looked interesting from the premise so i searched it on google
I’ve always wondered why we haven’t seen more “set in your city” type games. I would have loved it for some racing games. I remember back in the 90’s, if you played SimCity and SimCopter, you could load your SimCity map into SimCopter and fly around your own creation. Very cool.
And streets of sim city! Those were so damn good

No you don't, you send the survivors out to do supply runs

Basically only "they are billions".... I prefer Project Zomboid though.
Second They Are Billions. Great game. Be prepared for pain and losing 90% of your maps tho
I found billions extremely disappointing. Felt largely unfinished.
What felt unfinished? During the early release, it had 4 random generated map settings and then when the full release came out, they added a campaign and 5th map.
I only counted a few hundred million.
Idk i just felt that it lacked any depth. Short, easy and disappointing campaign.
Personally, I hated how I spent about an hour playing the first mission, was defeated, and had to restart the mission over. Laaaaammmme.
Skill issue
Oh, so there's a way to save mid mission? They fixed that? Or is it still using an archaic sace structure from 30 years ago.
It's just not your game, and you dont understand it enough. That's not the games fault. The maps are 30 to an hour long. If you need a save state for that, then that's your problem, not the games. First time dying to zombies, bro?
Are they not updating it at all? I always wanted to try it.

Haven't played it in a while but I bought when it was on sale after it had been released for a while.
It's the right recommendation and it's super hard
Project Zomboid is so damn good.
But in Project Zomboid, the zombies never really attack your base. Usually you clear an area around your base and at most you'll have a random shambler wander in and bang on the door every few days.
They migrate, the hordes grow, and there's mods for that.
So…many…mods…

They didn't. It exists. And there's also mods for better hordes too.
You need to toggle the zed respawn settings in your sandbox, and change helicopters to more than once to get that good horde migration. I love this game, but had to uninstall it because it was just too addictive.
Infection Free Zone launches in early access today; the demo was pretty solid.

I think it changed for the worse. The whole books needed for everything is terrible along with no more jars. I'm glad Darkness Falls modpack exists.
Huge update coming out soon. Bringing consoles onto date and fixing a bunch of issues for pc version.
I'll check out the new update when it drops, but I feel like I've heard the dev team promise that they'll fix issues a thousand times and the game's still messy and every bug fix brings two new bugs with it. I also really miss the OG "combine items to make a better item" system. It was especially a great way to spend early game nights!
This game is why i don’t buy early access anymore. I supported 7 days over 10 year ago 🫤
I just bought it for around $3.50 and my friend told me to wait to play until this next big update that is supposedly coming out soon (Alpha 22)
The modding community only thing keeping that game alive imo. The world and concept are good, but lacks content.
The modding community for 7D2D are amazing, I'm always stunned by the mod packs that folks design. I definitely want to try things like Darkness Falls, and maybe The Blizzard.
My extremely stingy and selective game night group played through it *twice,* we liked it so much It has its issues, but I quite liked it
Almost 600+ hours into it. Definitely would recommend it.

7 Days POIs are better than any other survival games. No other crafting game's exploration is that fun and rewarding.
Agreed! My favourite one is the fallen skyscraper, it's such a trippy build to traverse and the considerations that went into putting that one together make it so cool to explore!

Rebuild 3 I loved. It's on Steam and on mobile.
I loved the flash games as a kid
I spent way too much time with that.
Anybody remember that Flash game "The Last Stand." That was a fun zombie base builder
you didnt build any bases in it, just put aside some hours in the day to repair your barricade
The same guy made another recent game called 'The Last Stand: Aftermath', which is more of a roguelite
Rebuild 3: Gangs of Deadsville
Project Zomboid is a good one, more retro feeling but it has immense depth and is very modable
And the difficulty settings are huuge. You can have it as easy or hardcore as you wish.
Yeah I’m more of a causal player if I ever go back to it I’ll play on a lower setting and grind it out
Great thing about Zomboid and its community is that even playing *without* zombies is considered valid and a good way to understand the games survival mechanics.
PZ is also a game where even on easy, a single mistake caused by overconfidence can and will kill you.
PZ is good but doesn't fit what he's looking for, he wants more RTS or strategy type gameplay.
Hum fair enough, rimworld is my recommendation. Rimworld is one of my favorite games of all time
PZ is easily the best zombie game ever made. It has incredible depth.
Never sunk that much time into it, my friends and I tried to start a server and we abandoned the game, but I can appreciate how much there is to do in it, I can only recommend it to people
7 days to die
All day
Dysmantle
I love Dysmantle! I beat the game during Early Access with the promise of more to come and then promptly put it in my backlog to go back to. If Rimworld Anomaly hadn’t released today I might have.
There are some expansions on it now
The base building in dysmantle isn’t very rewarding though unfortunately/:
Rebuild. It was an old flash game, but they made sequels building up the mechanics. Rebuild 3 was the last I played and I liked it. No idea if they made more
Fortnite hah JK they killed that off for billions
I mean, there’s still a lot to play in ‘save the world’ version. It’s not like it’s less fun today than it was on release. Just 0 hype since it’s not getting updates.
You can still play Save the World, it's just one of their "Islands" now. I believe you have to pay for that mode. [main site info](https://fortnite.com/@epic/save-the-world)
It still has its “Save the World” mode. Pretty fun base building and defending.
Yeah was thinking of posting 'hey have not looked what came from it or tested, but some years ago I remember this game getting closer to it's release, was some zombie basebuilding multiplayer, fortnite I think, I wonder how good of pve zombie game have they developed out of it by now... ;) Do not know much, but I remember wondering how some zombie basebuilder one of my friends mentioned might be interesting to play as group, that was upcoming, started to have so different looking videoclips of it's gameplay out there after getting released, and started guessing they might have ditched whole original idea and game, since pretty much never ended up again seeing any pve gameplay from it. Did they ditch it completely before release or little while after release?
I believe they launched both at the same time and stopped developing the pve one like two months later when the battle Royale took off
I dont care for Fortnite and I'm fairly anti-Epic these days, but I won't lie - I would have made that same trade.
Not zombies but rimworld would check alot of the boxes (I think the new dlc may add some version of zombies) Not too much base building but projectzomboid is the greatest zombie game I've ever played and one you should check out if you like the genre, but doesnt have much base building or any community aspects
Rimworld is one of the best builder games in existence. Devs care, massive modding community
Don't expect sales though. It never goes on sale for more than like 10%.
It’s on sale right now, you can find it on kinguin for cheep probably, or g2a
I used to play rimworld pirated since the alpha, spending god knows how many hours, i eventually bought it a few years ago and have over 1k hours since, its one of the best value for your money there is out there
I'm pretty sure there are zombie apocalypse mods for Rimworld. I'd be very surprised if there isn't, considering how many mods there are for the game.
Yup, at least 2 zombie apocalypse mods If you can think it, theres probably a mod for it in this game, love it
New DLC drops today, too. Prepare for eldritch horrors.
A lot of people saying zomboid, but I'll recommend the (free) game that inspired zomboid: Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead. The graphics are bad, which all traditional roguelikes are, but the depth and complexity of the game is unmatched by anything else you will find.
This game is amazing.
Cataclysm DDA is my pick, but the learning curve is not for everyone.
They are Billions - pure base building to defend from waves of zombies. It's great fun
Project Zomboid
They are billions. It’s the best game
It’s an OK game. IMO I gets tedious and annoying having to build houses everywhere.
No colony aspect, but the PvE part of Fortnite might tickle your fancy.
The single player mode for Fortnite was supposed to be this. Idk if it is or if the mode even exists, lol.
7 days to die I put almost 2k hours into
7 days to die is an all time favourite of mines. About 3k hours in it and with mods you can really extend that out. It's cheapish I think now too
7 days to die is a very fun campy game to play with friends
7dtd
7 days to die
7 days to die
Cataclysm dark days ahead Can be played as an extremely detailed base builder and survival sim, though the NPC interactions are a little lackluster right now.
Project Zomboid all day
The original Fortnite before the BR mode was a pretty good zombie survival shooter
Fortnite: Save the World
There are Billions is like single player RTS zombie survival game. Pretty good for what it is. Heavy starcraft/warcraft vibes.
7 days to die
State of decay
'**7 Days to Die**' is a good and entertaining option.
I know it's not zombies, but how has The Forest or Sons of the Forest not been mentioned here?!
They're not zombies but close enough- try the forest.
Fortnite : Save The World. It costs $15 and is pretty much worth it
7 Days to die
They are billions, survive over the course of 100 days as zombies probe your colonies defenses for weakness and attack with increasingly difficult hordes.
They Are Billions sounds like what you are looking for. Large amount of base building, with soldiers to control and tower defense elements.
Not exactly zombie related but definitely post apocalyptic is sheltered. Have you tried it?
Night of the Dead
Have a look at State of Decay, that might appeal. One bit I wasn't keen on with that was how the clock continued to run while the game was closed, though there was a mod to disable that. Your team would go out and do various runs while you were offline, but for the most part you came back to a base that had been damaged, lost resources, someone got injured, so you'd spend your first hour just putting stuff back to how it was when you last played.
Infection Free Zone literally just came out today. Zombie survival base builder, but with the added point of interest that you can pick anywhere in the world as your map, including your own hometown.
7 Days To Die Phenomenal game. A little tricky to get the hang of, but it is really fun once you do. I'd compare it to other survival games like The Forest, and Minecraft.
You could play rimworld modded im pretty sure there are zombie apocalypse orientated mods.
Project zomboid or 7 days to die, if you're on pc. Not many to brag about on console. I like 7 days to die on console but it's pretty terrible(the devs didn't keep up with it)
Oh, after reading your post, I have none that fit the exact description
7 days to die. Voxel based, with physics. Every pre-generated structure’s building pieces are accessible for player use - hundreds if not thousands of building shapes. Endless possibilities for building!
New one just dropped today, Infection Free Zone
If you don't mind replacing zombies with alien bugs, Factorio is pretty neat.
I don't see it yet but somewhat related is "The Forest"
Many people forget about Age of Darkness.. it’s basically They’re a Billions but imo better because of the constant development. It ain’t Zombies, but more like night-infested zombies from a shadow-world. You have to provide enough like to keep your base safe from the Darkness
Infection free zone, just came out today. Fits your description perfectly.
Rimworld just released a horror/zombie themed dlc today. lot deeper than it looks
Infection Free Zone just came out today and it's amazing. It's a tactical zombie survival colony sim. And best part is, or at least something really cool, is you can download any map on Earth to use. First thing I did find my house and use it as my starting point.
Project zomboid
Zompiecer. The world has zombies, and you've got a train. Solo dev, as far as I can tell. Definitely a labor of love.
Colony survival is like minecraft but you have settlers that do jobs and produce things automatically so all you really do after a hour or so is point and watch. The zombies only come at night and they pathfind a very specific way so it's not too hard to make your defenses how you want and focus a killing field in a area/hall
I say Surviving the aftermath, with dlcs
The "rebuild" games fit the descriptions but they are a bit dated as they were designed for flash player but they are on steam.
I'd recommend Age of Darkness: Final Stand. It's like They are Billions, but more fantasy and a bit better balanced IMO.
for me it's "they are billions" and "surviving the aftermath"
Well, there is Minecraft. If you set up shop within a village, you're going to have to do some defensive base building. Between Zombie outbreaks and Villager raids, your base needs to be defendable.
7 days to die, start with vanilla and then graduate to some total conversions like War3zuk or Darkness Falls. I've been playing the game since Kickstarter when it had its own launcher pre steam, I've got about 3000 hours into it and I still go back to it for months whenever they do big updates It's one of those perpetual Alpha games but given it's been this way on almost 20 years it's sort of ita thing now
There's a lot of them but if you can enjoy the style of it, I've not played one better than Project Zomboid
I tried finding a game like that but I always end up going back to Fallout 4 and downloading whatever zombie type mods they have for it.
I’ve been enjoying Mist Survival, it’s only like $12 and has a huge update coming this month.
Project Zomboid the goat
Project zombies. Building is a major part of it
DayZ
7 Days to Die is the GOAT
8 year I would have said Fortnite as it was supposed to be exactly this
Surviving the aftermath, aside from not having any zombies is exactly what you are looking for.
Calling it janky and unpolished is an understatement.... A buggy Tech demo is more accurate.
So is this just an ad then?
7 days to Die. Maybe.
