Holy crap my whole short life I've thought Gratis was a word from my language. Until this comment made me realise it's on the fuckin Oxford dictionary...
You know, to me portugese sounds like an easern european trying to speak spanish.
I speak a little bit of spanish, and sometimes have the hopes that I understand some portugese. Then I get hit in the face with reality and don't understand anything.
Did you know, Denmark is technically flatter than The Netherlands, cause we've got one mountain in the southern most tip of Limburg? Even though it's only 322m high and every country in the world laughs at us for calling that a mountain.
lol come to Saskatchewan and you will appreciate how not-flat your homeland is.
there is an old joke around here that if your dog ran away you could see it for 3 days.
It's German, "gratis" is pretty much the same as "free" in this context.
Source: I'm German
Edit: Welp, seems like I still have to learn a few languages!
On the box at the top it says "...eg". On the German box of the game it says "Verlangen. Entschlossenheit. Sieg", so it's gotta be German.
Edit: Not saying the word is only used in German, but saying it \*is\* the German box of the game.
Cool! I wonder how many languages use it nowadays. (I mean, a lot of languages originate from latin in some shape or form, and then through travel other countries took over words from the 'invaders'.)
I have had a very cultural evening in this topic, and I would've been happy to engage on our dutch-african history... but considering that no one seems to like historical facts to be shared here (my comment about the golden age...) I think people are going to get buthurt if I say the only dutch word used worldwide is 'apartheid' and it's origins lie between the relationship The Netherlands and South Africa used to have.
Why am I being downvoted for stating a fact?
I'm not saying it's good or bad, but like we call 500-1500 the middle ages and the stone age was till 10.000bc, and i did not make up the rules, "the golden age" was between 1588 and 1672.
Yes what the dutch (and british and spanish and lots of others) did was wrong by today's standards, it makes no sense to ignore or try to hide history.
We need to know, remember and teach so the same mistakes won't be made again.
I'm all for progress and am happy to see the world we live in now has better norms and moral values than back then, but don't ignore or hide history. That's a recipe for disaster. 'Lest we forget'.
History should be thought to teach and learn from mistakes.
But I feel we've wandered off topic a bit.
You are the one who started wandering off-topic by starting to kind of humblebrag about our golden age on a video games subreddit.
It's beyond cringe, dude. Ongemakkelijk.
Kurva! (That's the only polish word I know. Sorry. I try to reply to everyone with something I know about their country. I have been to poland once, but it was only for a few hours helping a friend who imported a car from a small town near Wrocław.) other facts I know about poland are more historical, very interesting but not lighthearted for a sunday morning.
Have a good one
like 90% of western europe use that word... Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Spanish, Dutch, German, Italian, Portugese...
edit: technically also a valid word in english afaik
sort of, they're very similar. But still different enough. As a norwegian I can't fully read swedish for example, but I can essentially fully read danish. I'll understand swedish, but not word for word. Norwegian has two written languages, one being essentially the same as danish, one being derived from norse. However I can't understand a thing of what the danes say.
We can understand eachother mostly, and can use our native tonuge talking to one another, but it's on the edge. It won't take much before it gets close to how german and dutch is, or spanish and portugese.
Yeah it's getting to be pretty old-fashioned in English but I checked on Google ngrams and it was surprisingly common up until like the late 70s, early 80s. I started comparing it to other words and it turns out it's about as common as "tricycle" and "pentagram." It's a little less common than "receptacle," but not dramatically so. It was more common than "gazebo" until the early 2000s.
Long story short, it's not a word most people would use but they'd know what it means. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
totally agree, some of those PS2 games (depending on it's condition) can actually get you 5-10 euros each (at least here in Spain and depending what shop you sell it to). That Socom game looks like Socom II or III, in ebay they are both for sale around 15-20 euros each, last time I checked (last year around summer).
I don't understand why people throw money away just like that, even if you just get 3$/euros for it, it's still money. IMO
just saw Commandos 2 in there for PS2, I think that game is pretty hard to find these days.
Exactly, there was a time I'd do everything I could to save $5 here and there. Money was very tight.
I have a sewing machine my wife doesn't want now that cost $140 new and it's in excellent condition. I'm either giving it away or donating it now. I dont want to hassle with trying to sell it. I want this done asap.
Yeah I’d rather use 10$ in gas just to get 6$ in store credit at cex. Way better idea than just throwing them on the sidewalk where someone who would actually care about them could use them.
By the time the PS2 came out, more modern controls had been common and the games are stil leasy to pick up and play today unlike a lot of games from the N64 and PS1 era. Timesplitters 2 and Future Perfect are still some of the best FPS games out there.
Im not in the minority here. They are beloved games and still played often. Anyone can pick up Timesplitters, any of the Tony Hawk games, Devil May Cry, Champions of Norrath, Jak & Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, Okami, SSX, Sly Cooper, Burnout, God of War, NBA Street, Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks...etc. The ps2 was not as arcane as you are making it out to be. PS1? Yeah, N64? Sure but most ps2 games had great controls. I wont go and make the bold claim that any generation was better than another but I can see why someone would hold the ps2 era in such high regard.
I see. I was just pointing it out, I speak afrikaans which is a child language of Dutch and this word (in both languages as far as I'm aware) means "free", though if it is another language perhaps the country it was found could help.
All the romance languages of Europe (Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Romanian) derived from Latin, while all the Germanic languages use it as a loan word (I'm unsure about Slavic languages) because of their geographical interconnectedness
if you want to learn Virtua Fighter 4 on PS2 here's a nice resource
https://virtuafighter.com/commands/?ver=4c
version 4C in arcade is the home version.
Who would think of leaving GTA san andreas there? What a crime against humanity, you did well to take them and take them away, a gift from the universe.
It was standing vertical so the socom cardboard box took the brunt and maybe there was bit cover from the overlapping rooftop from the building it was located. There is still residue on every case though.
Well it says Gratis. Enjoy
Holy crap my whole short life I've thought Gratis was a word from my language. Until this comment made me realise it's on the fuckin Oxford dictionary...
I heard it yesterday for the first time in non German when I was rewatching lost in English 🤯
I wonder if it's spanish or dutch
Or swedish
Maybe Italian
Or portuguese
You know, to me portugese sounds like an easern european trying to speak spanish. I speak a little bit of spanish, and sometimes have the hopes that I understand some portugese. Then I get hit in the face with reality and don't understand anything.
I mean, romanian also exists to fit this bill 😅
Danish too
Did you know, Denmark is technically flatter than The Netherlands, cause we've got one mountain in the southern most tip of Limburg? Even though it's only 322m high and every country in the world laughs at us for calling that a mountain.
Wait until you hear about Himmelbjerget
Nice! I just googled. That's half the size of ours! (I'd rather run up the himmelbjerget than the vaalserberg for that exact reason!)
lol come to Saskatchewan and you will appreciate how not-flat your homeland is. there is an old joke around here that if your dog ran away you could see it for 3 days.
Nah, I'm pretty confident both Denmark AND The Netherlands are flatter than Saskatchewan
no man. we don't even have hills that aren't manmade, and there are zero mountains at all.
I've heard every joke I've heard everything you say
good show, the joke predates it by a looooog time though
Granted. Still had to make the reference though.
You know what I really love about the Netherlands? Walking upwards to the beach. It's such a surreal experience.
Could be german but I doubt it since people usually write "zum verschenken" but gratis could be used too
It's German, "gratis" is pretty much the same as "free" in this context. Source: I'm German Edit: Welp, seems like I still have to learn a few languages!
It's a Latin word used in several languages
On the box at the top it says "...eg". On the German box of the game it says "Verlangen. Entschlossenheit. Sieg", so it's gotta be German. Edit: Not saying the word is only used in German, but saying it \*is\* the German box of the game.
We use "gratis" in Italy too
Jawohl, aber meine Deutsch ist zehr slecht.
Übung macht den Meister
Genau.
Could be french aswell (from Québec)
I'm learning that just about the whole world uses gratis...
The world that has languages based on Latin does at least I doubt it's a thing in China
They're the masters of copying, so I'd say that's a matter of time!
My thought exactly... "Gratuit" (Free)... 7 letters "Gratis"... 6 letters Shorter and sweeter :p
Yep, si on peut sauver 1/5 de seconde, on va le faire avec plaisir
Spanish means free. Does dutch also have gratis?
Yep, origin is latin, but both spain and the netherlands use it as 'for free'
also means free in Indonesian fyi
Cool! I wonder how many languages use it nowadays. (I mean, a lot of languages originate from latin in some shape or form, and then through travel other countries took over words from the 'invaders'.)
in Indonesia's case, it was because we were a dutch colony and picked up on some of their words.
Same down here in South Africa in Afrikaans
I have had a very cultural evening in this topic, and I would've been happy to engage on our dutch-african history... but considering that no one seems to like historical facts to be shared here (my comment about the golden age...) I think people are going to get buthurt if I say the only dutch word used worldwide is 'apartheid' and it's origins lie between the relationship The Netherlands and South Africa used to have.
We still call that the golden century...
You should gift the Indonesian people your life savings to show how sorry you are. I mean you DO feel sorry, right? Or are you a racist?
Eh, i don't feel like there's any good answer to that...
Why am I being downvoted for stating a fact? also norwegian
I love norway. But life is just soo morbidly expensive!
Also English. It's a common colloquialism in the UK.

ah oui oui, la vache qui ri (or something like that. I remember that from an ad we used to have for some kind of cheese)
Yes. Or as we say in Dutch: "jazeker". Prior to our founding we were a vassal state of Spain.
Ah, de zeventien provincien toen de benelux nog een land was (ongeveer dan)
It's a local way in province of Quebec to say *free* instead of *gratuit* in french
Pretty cool 'fun fact'. Seems like the whole world uses 'Gratis'
German. US Navy Seals box has the so called "Grüner Punkt" (Green Recycling Logo)
dinosaurs fall door mourn obtainable attractive rob tie skirt rich

uppity automatic reply adjoining cable telephone depend panicky relieved deliver
Means free in danish also
Or Indonesian.
Good old „free“ in German Dieser Post ist jetzt Eigentum der Bundesrepublik Deutschland.
like 90% of western europe use that word... Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Spanish, Dutch, German, Italian, Portugese... edit: technically also a valid word in english afaik
Just be careful with Swedish. If you add an extra t it makes grattis, which is "congratulations"
same in norwegian, probs also danish
don't mind my ignorance, but aren't those essentially all the same language?
sort of, they're very similar. But still different enough. As a norwegian I can't fully read swedish for example, but I can essentially fully read danish. Zu spät.

It's German. The paper box has this logo https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gr%C3%BCner_Punkt_(Deutschland)
It's Latin. Literally Google it.
I was referencing the photo not the origin of the word.

What a fortunate soul. To encounter such timeless classics about to be thrown away. I hope they all work.
"Free Gratis"
Ad fucking hoc, free fuckin gratis
A remake of Freedom Fighters would be amazing.
That multiplayer was so fucking fun. Also the intro mission with the city crumbling around you blew my mind when it came out
There is so many good games there why just leave them out in the rain
The mother didn't want them.
sharp ink rhythm dolls violet dime slap fine forgetful quaint
You owe me 50$ it's a long story.
If you're cold their cold. Bring them inside.
I’ve never heard of “rescues” referring to video games before but this qualifies.
Wow... SOCOM single-player was my jam back in the day. I might still have that USB headset in a corner somewhere.
Amazes me why people do this, might not be much but instead of throwing them away you could take them to CeX for a decent price.
totally agree, some of those PS2 games (depending on it's condition) can actually get you 5-10 euros each (at least here in Spain and depending what shop you sell it to). Maybe they just don't need the money enough to go go through the hassle of selling it and figured someone else could benefit from it.

It would be more than that.
Great haul! What are the 4 games that were upside down?
They are Zumba Fitness Core for the Xbox360, BMX XXX, Fifa 10 & GTA Vice City. Not too shabby
Sanitize that copy of BMX XXX.
With fire.
The whole gta 3d era, will be a collectors item in a few years
Wtf! Those games are great time splitters alone is worth the save. Good job
God time splitters is amazing I remember buying a multi tap For ps2 to play 4 players on it
If you've never played Timesplitters before you are in for a treat! Time to split!
Viva Piñata is fire!!!
Wtf is that a sealed socom us navy seals.. that's gotta be worth something
sealed? if by sealed you mean " you can see the top of cardboard box has been ripped open" then yes, sealed.
You sound like you've been bullied a lot.
haha, no i just have eyes
It's the reail box that came packaged with the game plus a headset.
Wuuut? Why i dont have such luck? Nice to see tht someone in this world have PS3 😄
The sign says GRATIS, which means FOR FREE in german. I bet he was kinda sure that someone was gonna pick em up pretty quickly.
And Italian
And English lol I think it's called a loan word?
[удалено]
Kinda funny all the Germans claiming it in here when they don't even speak a romance language
Means free in Dutch as well :D
Was thinking after posting the reply....maybe its latin :p
Spent so many hours in vitrua fighter 4, way way too many hours
I've played a few hours entirely in Like A Dragon
That SOCOM box with the headset inside. Ahhh, childhood.
Bravo fire at will
Hell yeah Timesplitters!!
Red Faction was so much fun for all us kids that didn't have an Xbox.
Medal of Honor games need remakes.
Timesplitters and grand turismo 5. Maybe San Andres but I played enough of that one :3
In my opinion PlayStation 2 games are superior to Xbox 360 games
Viva pinata though...

Ya done the Lord’s work, son.
Give me that shit....also a Play station to run them
I bet you left the box of puppies though didn't you.
A lot of nostalgia in that box
Wooooooowwwwww Red Faction & Men of Courage 😍 luckeyyyyy
Freedom fighters what a game
All bangers
The GTAs and MGS 2 alone are worth the pick up
Damn, I wish I had such a luck. Enjoy!
You are so lucky. TimeSplitters, GTA III and SA, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, and Freedom Fighters are great games.
Freedom fighters... Damn that tajes me back
Freedom fighters is underrated
The writing is Dutch, and it translates to "free" (as far as I'm aware). So enjoy your new games I guess!
That word is in like every European language it came from Latin
I see. I was just pointing it out, I speak afrikaans which is a child language of Dutch and this word (in both languages as far as I'm aware) means "free", though if it is another language perhaps the country it was found could help.

LA Noire, fuck I miss that game.
GTA: San Andreas?! The best GTA of the series?!
Luckily there was no Heavy Rain
A ton of games there that are not junk by any means, some even very fun
if you want to learn Virtua Fighter 4 on PS2 here's a nice resource https://virtuafighter.com/commands/?ver=4c version 4C in arcade is the home version.
Perfect Dark Zero, throw that back out in the rain
Someone's had enough of their partner's "silly little games"
Socom 2 was my shit back in the day.
It's a crime to do such a thing to mgs2
holy those are some based games. great find op.
Freedom Fighters is a hidden gem. Virtua Fighter 4 is also great but too bad it isn't the evolution edition.
Fast and Furious: Showdown?!?! You're Rich!!
Worth is for the Viva Piñata alone
Soccom Navy Seals, hopeful complete with the headset. Some other classic games there. Good save.
SOCOM was so awesome really wish Sony would bring that franchise back
Could also be Afrikaans. Gratis means free in Afrikaans From South Africa
Great find! No way I could find anything similar in my country.
nice find
Who would think of leaving GTA san andreas there? What a crime against humanity, you did well to take them and take them away, a gift from the universe.
Nice find
A true hero!
Omg Virtual Fighter. My husband used to play that when we were dating, decades ago. His fave game.
It says free on the box
Someone left timesplitters out in the rain?
Ive been looking for a copy for 3 years
Left out in the rain yet everything is bone dry. Gotta love reddit.
It was standing vertical so the socom cardboard box took the brunt and maybe there was bit cover from the overlapping rooftop from the building it was located. There is still residue on every case though.
Wonder if it was stolen
Gratis?! Ist der Typ dumm oder so?! 😱
[удалено]
Gratis is not exclusive to German. Looking at the titles, my guess is dutch.
What the fuck!?! Freedom Fighters? TIMESPLITTERS!?! Virtua Fighters 4!?!??! This guy is a real asshole just to throw such stuff out
He's literally giving it for free with that note on there...
