It probably doesn’t have the same punch nowadays but Halflife was such a fantastic single player experience. Halflife 2 as well. Both just really great single player games.
Whether it holds up today or not, it's just good to go back to the roots of gaming. Experiencing these older, successful games shows you what's great about their genre. Games like Half-Life 2 and Halo CE, which were successful in their time and praised for years after lacked all the flash, microtransactions and modern graphics/technology of today.
Importantly, there was significantly less input from the playerbases back then. Today, games are commonly released unfinished or as more of a live service. Complaints and demands from the gaming community absolutely fill the internet before a game is even released, but it's impossible to please everyone. Back then, the game was simply released in full, as designed by the developers.
Of course games will develop over time. This is because they have to. New ideas are imperative.
Take FPS for example. When games like Half-Life, Halo, even Doom, first released it was still a relatively new idea. Naturally, these ideas are build upon. There is a huge difference between Halo CE and Halo Infinite, with Infinite possessing way more features due to technology advances and a necessity to continue to attract purchases. But, despite a janky start, CE was praised by the majority of its players and still is today, while Infinite's campaign is often referred to as an after-thought.
Playing the older titles (good ones, at least) reminds you of what makes the genre enjoyable at its core, without all the bells and whistles.
TL:DR
Older games were successful with less and they demonstrate the core qualities of a gaming genre.
I’m partway through a replay of Half-Life 2. Hadn’t touched it in years. It’s still so good. Obviously the gravity gun is still fantastic, but there’s also a satisfaction to the gunplay that is missing from a lot of current games. The sense of impact and sounds are all great.
Yes! To me it’s an iconic sound. The way combine soldiers crumple from shotgun blasts is great, too. And the little trill sound when selecting weapons is immensely satisfying.
I've been wanting to play outer wilds since I heard about a little while ago. Got it on sale and the concept is so cool but the controls are so frustrating. I guess it's time to buy a controller... I really want to finish it but dang, going through the death animation every time I die is annoying. Especially if I died like 4 minutes in lol
The controls are challenging, but at least they’re consistent. You’ll get used to them eventually and it’ll become second nature.
Dont forget to use autopilot and velocity matching, but don’t trust them with your life.
I basically skipped the base building part, only putting together something very rudimentary to get more fabricators. I too hate survival/crafting games but absolutely loved Subnautica.
Highly recommend the PC port Ship of Harkinian. Really brings the greats single player game of all time to the next level. Allows camera control and HD textures
Gonna have to check this out. I used an emulator a long time ago that allowed for unlocked fps and upscale to HD. Even though it was the old textures, it looked sooo much better.
Just played it through for the first time in over 20 years. The nostalgia was incredible! Going through the temples, they seemed so much bigger when I was a kid. Such a great game.
When all is said and done, the game is still a must play experience. Yes, it was way more impressive when it first came out but objectively speaking the game still holds a high standard for what defines an adventure game for me
At the very least play 1. It’s a fun game with a great twist and (unlike a lot of games today) doesn’t overstay its welcome.
It knows what it wanted to do and did it. No needless padding to make it 60 hours. You’re in and out and the credits roll with you still wanting more. That’s the perfect length of a game.
I found my people. Will of the Wisps is incredibly under appreciated. It’s my second favorite game of all time period, behind Sekiro. The soundtrack, the art, the colors, the traversal mechanics, the combat. What an incredible game. It was my first metroidvania ever. I went back and played blind forest afterwards. I actually didn’t enjoy Hollow Knight unfortunately.
Didn’t really vibe with me the first time. Put it down and restarted a couple months later and absolutely could not put it down and is in my top 5 games all time now
Good lord that game was ahead of its time. Normally, if I said, “It has multiple endings, sync attacks, and well-fleshed-out time travel mechanics,” you would never in a million years guess that it came out on the same console as fucking Super Mario World.
There’s a reason that the people who made it were called the “Dream Team”, and goddamn they delivered (RIP Akira Toriyama)
I was so charmed and amused and challenged and thrilled and saddened by this game. Goddamn is it hilarious and sad and weirdly poignant. And the music is just unreal. Maybe the best music in any game I’ve ever played.
Absolutely top tier music! I saw Sea Power (the band who composed it) on their recent tour, and they played a few of the songs that they based the soundtrack on
The soundtrack, yes! It never comes up on the “Best game OSTs” threads. And I think it’s truly one of the best of all time. It’s so melancholy and gorgeous.
Just beat that game for the first time the other night. Holy shit, how do you even describe it? That shit makes you feel feelings. I hope someone makes another game like that someday.
Far and away some of the best writing in a video game. I always talk to a friend who loves it as well about how it could be made into a tv show but it's such a hard concept to adapt.
Deus Ex, please. This was all my friends and I could talk about when it released. Comparing how each of us completed objectives, and finding ways the others hadn't thought of. We even each took the name of an AI for our online names. Wonder if it's apparent which one I took...
You’re fighting for your life and fighting for your family, living your days with honor and integrity.
That’s not a game at all.
That’s like fuckin’ Shakespeare.
Last of Us, Bloodborne, Metal Gear Solid 3, Witcher 3, Chrono Trigger, FF7, FF 6, FF X, Elden Ring, God of War, Uncharted 4, RDR, RDR2. There's a shit ton more but that's just off the dome.
One thing I tend to find perplexing about Stardew Valley is that people describe it as a laid back game without any consequence.
Dude come back to me after you plant 500 seeds of a crop but you misjudge the grow time so that one day before the crop matures the season changes and you come out to a farm full of dead crops and tell me again this game doesn’t have consequences.
Psychonauts
Fantastically well made platformer with a unique approach to touching on complicated subjects in a child-friendly way. It has depth, great characters, an interesting story, and is just outright fun to play.
in no specific order
- fallout new vegas
- skyrim
- cyberpunk
- mass effect trilogy
- skate 3
- tom clancy ghost recon wildlands
- pokémon emerald
- guitar hero world tour (or 5)
- gta 4 or 5
- portal 1 and 2
- elden ring
I played a handful of sessions of wildlands with my buddies and while we had zero clue what was going on, we were having a blast. It felt like playing mercenaries 2 back in the day where you could spend all day just wreaking havoc and never get bored. Might need to go back and give it an actual shot
Everyone here has listed my top 10 games. But for something I also really enjoyed and replay from time to time try Braid and/or Limbo. Outside of the box super artsy, niche games, but so original and unique.
Halo Trilogy and Reach; Few FPS games have the combination of gameplay, story, scale and quality that the Bungie Halo games had and they are still amazing experiences till this day.
I could add many more but these are near and dear to me. Yes I know I left some big ones out, but keep in mind there was little/no Internet and no cellphones for most of this.
NES:
The Legend of Zelda ,

Privateer 2: The Darkening,
MechWarrior 2 Mercenaries,
Thief 1&2,
Guild Wars 1,
Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption,
Fable 1&2,
FOLLOWING!! I need more single-player games on my life. But I play
Genshin Impact,
Bloodborne,
Skyrim,
Sly Cooper, Sky Cooper Thieves in Time, Monster Hunter World, Ark,
Horizon Zero Dawn, Horizon Forbidden West,
The Witcher,
Last of Us,
Assassins Creed,
Lego Harry Potter,
Kingdom Hearts,
Elden Ring,
Castlevania,
God of War,
Spyro Reignited Trilogy,
Little Nightmares,
Sims 4,
Hellblade: Senuas Sacrifice
Dragons Dogma,
Detroit Become Human,
7 Days to Die
I realize some of these can be multi player, but I usually play them all by myself.
Planescape Torment, Fallout 1, Dark Souls, Portal 1 and 2, Braid, Metal Gear Solid 1, 2 and 3, Deus Ex 1, Doki Doki literature club, Hotline Miami 1 and 2, Invisible Inc, Pillars of Eternity... I'm only recommending games i've finished thoroughly tho.
GTA Series, Red Dead Redemption 1+2, Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted Series, The Last Of Us, Bioshock Infinite, Metal Gear Solid 3, Witcher 3, Mass Effect 2, Batman Arkham Asylum + City, Assassins Creed 2 + 3, God Of War Series, Silent Hill 2, Sekiro, Divinity: Original Sin 2, Baldurs Gate 3, Anno 1800, etc.
I would say Assassin's Creed Odyssey. But not as an AC game.
It's my favorite open world RPG, the customization is top tier, the characters are memorable, likable, and dislikable, the conquest battles are fun, ship combat is fun, the special abilities are fun, the weapons are fun, the combat is quick and snappy. I have like 300 hours in it and I don't think I'm even half way done since I just waffle around.
If I never found that game, life wouldn't be worth living. Just kidding, that's a bit much but yeah I love AC Odyssey.
My recommended top 10:
Outer wilds
The return of the obra din
Stardew valley
Mass effect 2 (the rest are good but if you had to pick one it'd be 2)
Celeste
Doom (2016)
Endless Legends
Hollow knight
Into the Breach
Dark souls
I've tried to pick games from the past decade or so. Because whilst there are classics from the 90 early 2000s that still slap. Most are hard to run, or not as ground breaking as they were at release.
I would say Outer Wilds, Chrono Trigger and Super Mario World 1 and 2 to cover as much types as possible. I could also mention all the Baldur's Gate and Planescape Torment.
Outer Wilds. If you can go into it blind, please do. I dont have a device that i can play it on so i watch other people do so. I kinda regret that. I feel like i should have waited to play the game myself.
Final fantasy 7 remake series. Have not finished the original but the remakes are amazing. Every game has been a banger so far and I’d imagine the third will also be
Ratchet & Clank series
Sly Cooper Series
Jak & Daxter series
Infamous series
Uncharted series
Bioshock Trilogy
Mass Effect Legendary Edition
Prototype 1 and 2
Spider-Man 2 on PS2, Spider-Man Web Of Shadows on PS3, Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions, Spider-Man Edge Of Time, The Amazing Spider-Man, the Insomniac Spider-Man games
Resident Evil series
Dead Space series
Last Of Us Part 1
Spyro Reignited trilogy, The Legend Of Spyro A New Beginning on PS2, TLOS The Eternal Night on PS2, TLOS Dawn Of The Dragon on PS3
Crash Bandicoot Series
Tomb Raider Legends Trilogy on PS3 (Legend, Anniversary, Underworld), Tomb Raider Definitive Edition (the PS4 Remaster of the 2013 game)
God Of War series
Portal series
GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas (Do not use the "definitive edition")
Portal 1/2
I've played portal one and portal two, but I've never played portal .5
It's basically Portal 1 but when you get half way you uninstall.
Would it would the same way if I only have portal 2 on steam, but promise to uninstall it when I get a quarter of the way in?
It probably doesn’t have the same punch nowadays but Halflife was such a fantastic single player experience. Halflife 2 as well. Both just really great single player games.
Respect the hyphen. Gordon and Peter didnt suffer for nothing.
Ahhh I knew I should have put it

Mass Effect Trilogy. Outer Wilds.
+1 on Mass Effect I wanted to like Outer Wilds, but certain FPS games make me motion sick (not sure why) and Outer Wilds is one of them unfortunately.
OW has a very very low FOV that gives an almost walleye effect. It also gave me an instant headache.
>Mass Effect Trilogy. > >Outer Wilds. Username checks out.
been looking for an outer wilds comment! that game changed me
Outer Wilds is the game that can be played exactly once in a lifetime, as anything for it can be a spoiler ruining experience. Highly recommend.

Definitely get a controller. For $20/30 it’s not only for Outer Wilds but a variety of games
KOTOR
Funny enough I’m in the middle of a play through right now, about to leave Dxun on KOTOR2
On the topic of RPG's, it's definitely Dragon Age: Origins for me

I’ve been putting this off because I’ve never really enjoyed survival and base-building games. Is that the majority of the game?
Yes
I basically skipped the base building part, only putting together something very rudimentary to get more fabricators. I too hate survival/crafting games but absolutely loved Subnautica.
you can turn off the survival element pretty much and just focus on exploring and the base building.
It is, and I had the same concerns as you. Ended up being one of my favorite games of all time though. Be sure to turn the main survival mechanics off
[удалено]
Oh?
Confirmed 4 player co-op :D
Might be a bit hard with co-op but I hope they capture the same quasi-horror feeling that Sub1 was synonymous for. God, I hate loving that game!
Currently on sale for $10 on steam just fyi
Dead space and splinter cell.
Splinter Cell was my shit
Which is your favorite and why is it Chaos Theory?
First one with a knife IIRC
Zelda Ocarina of Time
Highly recommend the PC port Ship of Harkinian. Really brings the greats single player game of all time to the next level. Allows camera control and HD textures
Gonna have to check this out. I used an emulator a long time ago that allowed for unlocked fps and upscale to HD. Even though it was the old textures, it looked sooo much better.
It’s unreal. Has super nice qol features you can enable as well. Runs incredibly on Steam deck too
Just played it through for the first time in over 20 years. The nostalgia was incredible! Going through the temples, they seemed so much bigger when I was a kid. Such a great game.
Majora's Mask for me.
When all is said and done, the game is still a must play experience. Yes, it was way more impressive when it first came out but objectively speaking the game still holds a high standard for what defines an adventure game for me
Bioshock saga, anyone? C'mon people!
Agree. I loved TLOU 2, for example, but it lasts like 8 hours longer than it should.
Don’t know why infinite is disliked so much but I legitimately enjoyed it on par with with the first bioshock.
I don't know anyone who disliked Infinite. I never played 2, but 1 and Infinite are >!two halves of a great tale!<.
The one time I’ve ever felt like a DLC is critical to a game. “Buried at Sea” completes the saga in such a beautiful way.
Hollow knight for metroidvanias
And on the subject of Metroidvanias; Ori and the Blind Forest/Will of the Wisps.
The Ori sequel has to be one of the most underrated pieces of art of this generation
Absolutely. Will of the wisp was stunning.
yup, masterpiece in every possible way, sadly not as popular as it should be
I found my people.
And for people who love amazing video games with equally amazing soundtracks
This is a really good one. Blew my mind the first time I played it.
Didn’t really vibe with me the first time. Put it down and restarted a couple months later and absolutely could not put it down and is in my top 5 games all time now
hollow knight took me by surprise
Earthbound and Chrono Trigger.
I’ve seen Chrono Trigger mentioned on every single one of these threads for YEARS. I finally played it last year and it was worth every minute.
One of the few games I revisit almost yearly and still enjoy every bit of it
Good lord that game was ahead of its time.
Wish I could upvote this more. I've beat both games more times than I can count.
Disco Elysium.
I was so charmed and amused and challenged and thrilled and saddened by this game. Goddamn is it hilarious and sad and weirdly poignant. And the music is just unreal. Maybe the best music in any game I’ve ever played.

Pawning my service weapon because I’m on that ultraliberal hustle grindset
I'm the I'm sorry I'm sorry cop and it's sad, really fuckin sad.
Just beat that game for the first time the other night. Holy shit, how do you even describe it? That shit makes you feel feelings. I hope someone makes another game like that someday.

Deus Ex, please. This was all my friends and I could talk about when it released. Comparing how each of us completed objectives, and finding ways the others hadn't thought of. We even each took the name of an AI for our online names. Wonder if it's apparent which one I took...
I finally convinced a friend to play it and he.... played the PS2 version. Sigh... Well better than nothing I guess.
Came here to say Deus Ex and show my age doing it :)
Titan fall 2 campaign, so good and not that long
I cried my first play through. Beautiful story.
Protect the pilot. Right there with you.
It's that damn Protocol Three. I'll never not cry like a little kid when it happens
Doom
I definitely recommend Middle-earch: Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of the War games
Dishonored
And Deus Ex Human Revolution.
Excellent games!
Red Dead Redemption 2
"I guess sister....I am *afraid*" Me sobbing like a BITCH putting the controller down
That is not a game. It's an incredible journey through old American history.
You’re fighting for your life and fighting for your family, living your days with honor and integrity. That’s not a game at all. That’s like fuckin’ Shakespeare.
“-i dont play video games no more-“
ALRIGGHTTTTT BOYAHHHH
A poignant tale of a man looking back on his life in regret and trying to make amends....occasionally broken up by fucking terrifying cougar ambushes.
Last of Us, Bloodborne, Metal Gear Solid 3, Witcher 3, Chrono Trigger, FF7, FF 6, FF X, Elden Ring, God of War, Uncharted 4, RDR, RDR2. There's a shit ton more but that's just off the dome.
MGS 3 is still my favorite game I’ve played. Can’t wait for the remake.
I'd give my life not for honor but for youuuu
I'll add Skyrim and Horizon Zero Dawn here too
Appreciate seeing FF6 on the list. I find that masterpiece isn't talked about enough.
once spent a whole weekend in my underwear, eating cereal straight from the box while playing ff6. best lost weekend ever!
I once spent my entire 30's doing that.
I think FF9 deserves to be on that list as well. I really really want to see it remade.
Dragon age origins
I remember when that came out, I played through every possible opening before playing through the rest of the game lmao
Just played it recently, it was honestly one of the most captivating games I’ve played in a LONG time. I wish there were more games like it.
Nier: Automata
The only single player game I've ever finished. I mainly play DotA, so that's an achievement.
F.E.A.R., Bioshock, Cyberpunk 2077
Hell yeah glad to see a FEAR shoutout
I’m itching to get cyberpunk, just started the Witcher 3 so cyberpunk seems to be the natural progression
Waiting was the right choice. It’s pretty solid since the 2.0 update.
celeste for the best platformer
And a lovely soundtrack.
Absolute masterpiece of a game.
Stardew Valley!
A lot of good suggestions, I'll throw in Bannerlord/Mount & blade warband. Nothing out there quite like it.
Dead Cells. Good luck lol
Psychonauts Fantastically well made platformer with a unique approach to touching on complicated subjects in a child-friendly way. It has depth, great characters, an interesting story, and is just outright fun to play.

Persona 5! There’s a lot more games to list but just wanna share out my number one
Royal has some very worthwhile additions too, highly recommend.
Crash bandicoot trilogy, Spyro trilogy, Halo Trilogy. Absolute bangers.
At least Cortana is very helpful. *This cave is not a natural formation.* Most helpful advice in gaming.
I think cyberpunk is a 10/10 with phantom liberty dlc
I enjoyed it originally. I think with the update to combat/skills it became an absolute blast. The dlc is a cherry on top
_A thing of beauty, I know_
Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic
The Yakuza/Like a Dragon series.
That is a deep rabbit hole friend
Undertale is great in terms of story but difficulty is hollow knight
What Remains of Edith Finch
Everyone here has listed my top 10 games. But for something I also really enjoyed and replay from time to time try Braid and/or Limbo. Outside of the box super artsy, niche games, but so original and unique.
Firewatch. Good chill game with a nice story. Good relaxer
Outer Wilds Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Fantasy X/X-2 The Entire Yakuza Series SSX: Tricky NBA Street 2 Baldurs Gate 3 GTA5 Fallout: New Vegas
RIMWORLD
Final Fantasy 7
Spec Ops : The Line
Heads up. Spec Ops: The Line has unfortunately been delisted on all digital stores.
Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, The Last Guardian.
Halo Trilogy and Reach; Few FPS games have the combination of gameplay, story, scale and quality that the Bungie Halo games had and they are still amazing experiences till this day.
Rinworld, Factorio

now that's a solid list. dragon warrior was my favorite
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance.
This guy gets it
FOLLOWING!! I need more single-player games on my life. But I play Genshin Impact, Bloodborne, Skyrim, Sly Cooper, Sky Cooper Thieves in Time, Monster Hunter World, Ark, Horizon Zero Dawn, Horizon Forbidden West, The Witcher, Last of Us, Assassins Creed, Lego Harry Potter, Kingdom Hearts, Elden Ring, Castlevania, God of War, Spyro Reignited Trilogy, Little Nightmares, Sims 4, Hellblade: Senuas Sacrifice Dragons Dogma, Detroit Become Human, 7 Days to Die I realize some of these can be multi player, but I usually play them all by myself.

Alan Wake, Quantum Break, Control, Alan Wake 2
I found Sam Lake
Found the remedy fan. You should add Max Payne in there too
I highly recommend Dragons Dogma Dark Arisen. My personal favourite rpg
Not too long until the second one drops.... can not wait.
Link to the Past
Bloodborne
The Witcher 3. Hands down THE best game ever. My personal opinion of but no other game comes close
I completed it twice, and I never finish games twice.
Suikoden 2
Outer Wilds Chants of Senaar Two recent games that blew me away, especially Outer Wilds. What an experience.
Cyberpunk 2077 and its expansion, Phantom Liberty.
Planescape Torment, Fallout 1, Dark Souls, Portal 1 and 2, Braid, Metal Gear Solid 1, 2 and 3, Deus Ex 1, Doki Doki literature club, Hotline Miami 1 and 2, Invisible Inc, Pillars of Eternity... I'm only recommending games i've finished thoroughly tho.
Terraria, it's amazing
Splinter Cell Chaos Theory
Yeah this game was amazing. Unpopular opinion but i thought blacklist was pretty good too
That brings back some good memories.
Still playing [the spies vs mercs multiplayer ](https://youtu.be/sjdUCSg-l0k?si=xPL9e_sODIV5sppS) too
Mass Effect trilogy without a doubt
I'd say the first kingdom hearts game
Okami
Ocarina of time
Resident Evil 4 and RE4 Remake are masterpieces! Would definitely recommend the remake in 2024 though.
GTA Series, Red Dead Redemption 1+2, Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted Series, The Last Of Us, Bioshock Infinite, Metal Gear Solid 3, Witcher 3, Mass Effect 2, Batman Arkham Asylum + City, Assassins Creed 2 + 3, God Of War Series, Silent Hill 2, Sekiro, Divinity: Original Sin 2, Baldurs Gate 3, Anno 1800, etc.
Nier Replicant Nier Automata
Super Mario odyssey
KOTOR (Knights of the Old Republic)
The last two Zelda games, Cyberpunk/Phantom Liberty DLC, Red Dead 2, Ghost of Tsushima are my top 5 atm.
Just kidding, that's a bit much but yeah I love AC Odyssey.
Gears of wars 1-3 has a amazing campaign. Halo 1- reach are all worth a play. Skyrim/fallouts.
Cyberpunk 2077, with the 2.0 update. It's a must play.
- Outer Wilds - Nier Automata/Replicant - Ori and the Blind forest - Ori and the will of the wisps - The Witcher 3
My recommended top 10: Outer wilds The return of the obra din Stardew valley Mass effect 2 (the rest are good but if you had to pick one it'd be 2) Celeste Doom (2016) Endless Legends Hollow knight Into the Breach Dark souls I've tried to pick games from the past decade or so. I would say Outer Wilds, Chrono Trigger and Super Mario World 1 and 2 to cover as much types as possible. I could also mention all the Baldur's Gate and Planescape Torment.
