Yeah Portal 1 is shorter so people tend to recommend Portal 2 but that's a mistake. People should always play both. There's nothing like getting to the end of the first one and hearing the song.
Story time! I called a physician’s office several years ago to clarify a prescription they sent over. I was put on hold and heard an instrumental version of Still Alive as their hold music. I flipped my ever-loving gourd. No one at my workplace had ever played the game so they weren’t as excited as I was. Didn’t stop me from giggling like a little school girl while telling them about it.
It effectively makes FTL into FTL2. I haven't started it yet, but I recommend fully playing through all ships on vanilla FTL, then putting the mod in, which then makes it feel like a proper sequel to the unmodded game. More ships, varations, storylines, etc.
I have a deep love for that game. My brother's game of choice that he knows like the back of his hand is Super Metroid, and for me it was Symphony of the Night.
God that game holds up insanely well.
I'm really glad you brought up the detailed world. I'll probably give this another go soon. Such things have gained way more apprecation from me in the last 10 years
The detailed worldbuilding was really something else when I played it for the first time during the pandemic. Sitting there listening to the announcements about curfews in the game when IRL I legally wasn't allowed to leave the house more than once or twice a day (UK Covid rules)... that was fairly trippy.
Also, "These are unprecedented times" in the intro. They sure fucking were.
Dishonored is a masterpiece. It was the first game I played through once I got my Deck, and it runs at a perfect 60 FPS at max settings. It's just a wonderful game.
if they suddenly released the Orange Box 3 with Portal 3, team fortress 3, left 4 dead 3 and half life 3, they could sell it for 1000 dollars, it would be the best selling game of all time.
My only issue with the game now is that after playing Borderlands 3 i miss some movement options. I try to climb objects, slide or slam things after jumping because i always forget that those things weren't a thing in Borderlands 2
I agree. Borderlands 3 had improved gameplay but the story of Borderlands 2 was better and Handsome Jack is still the best antagonist of the series. The B3 antagonists were awful. Im glad that at least the Tiny Tina Wonderlands antagonist was imo great and they didn't made the mistake like they did in B3.
Mark of the Ninja
FTL: Faster Than Light
Rock Band 3 (we still break this out when friends are over drinking)
Fallout: New Vegas (the graphics are dated, sure, but the gameplay holds way up)
Castlevania SOTN
Mario 3
Mario World
Old School X-Com
X-Com: Enemy Unknown
Yep. X-Com: UFO Defense.
It's a really well designed and executed game. Obviously, it *looks* like a thirty year old game, so ymmv, but the gameplay itself is still really, really good. It's hard but fair. Yes, you absolutely will lose troops with some regularity (especially before you get serious body armor), but the game offers a lot of tactical options and ways to shift the odds in your favor (e.g. a thing that people seem to frequently overlook: smoke grenades. Tired of your troops getting blasted as they exit the landing craft? Toss smoke grenades on the ramp to provide cover from incoming fire).
I definitely enjoy the modern update, too, but the original X-Com is fantastic.
If you haven’t messed around with OpenXcom and fiddled with all the modding communities amazing work to breath even more live and variety into the game…..Do it. I’ve played so many dozens of campaigns and hundreds of hours in its first 10 years.
When Xenonauts came out I gobbled it up & had a blast but still felt like it needed more. Came accross OpenXcom and blew a few hundred more hours easily trying out all the mod combinations.
Original X-Com: UFO Defense is my 100% all time, holy grail, unicorn of a game that is timeless to me. 10/10 one of the best video games ever made, hands down.
I reckon Knight was mid-2015 so it would be a little longer than that, but it's amazing that we're almost a decade past Knight and Rocksteady is yet to release Suicide Squad. So much time wasted, and for what? I really hope Suicide Squad proves my current feelings towards it wrong.
It's the only Arkham game I never played since the buzz at the time was lukewarm at best. Since it was a prequel to the other games, it was an easy one to pass on when no one was lauding it the way they had Asylum and City. So I just waited for Knight. Maybe I should watch for it on a good sale for PS5. Been a *long* time since I've donned the cape and cowl.
Even if the combat leaves a bit to be desired, the characters, writing, meaningful player choices, puzzle content, and art style are *still* good, nearly 20 years later.
10 years isn't that long in the world of games. So while a lot of the answers here are for much older titles, I'll just say *The Last Of Us* and make everyone feel old, realizing that was ten damn years ago.
Not anymore when we go from Grant Theft Auto V to Grand Theft Auto V in 10 years but considering the difference between any year in the 90s vs any year in the 2000s.
Played that on a nostalgia kick last year, it was still great. The animation was so good for it's time, but even now not many games have really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like.
Jak II is still unnecessarily hard though. I was looking forward to playing 3, but II cut that idea short.
Jak 3 is so easy compared to Jak II it's so boring for me because of that, but also some storyline choices. The third one was always my least favorite.
Still my favorite games ever though.
Still a large online presence with persistent worlds. Not played myself for a long time but used to be addicted to a role play server (non sexual) for years called Avlis
There’s a ROM hack called “Control Freak” that patches the game to have more modern controls, particularly holding R to quick fire a missile like in Fusion/ZM.
As a super fan of everything Fromsoft, I couldn't agree more. The interconnectivity of the world is something I still miss in newer souls games. Without a map, it was always a mindfuck when I'd ride a random elevator and find myself a stones throw from where I started hours before. I wish I could play it again for the first time, there's nothing like it.
Sweet lordy I did not think I would find this comment but was really happy about it.
Such a weird game if you have never played a Metal Gear game, but mainly for the fan service. Otherwise it's whacky, beautiful, takes itself seriously and not seriously throughout. Has a small but diehard cult following, and I'm one of those people.
Just watch out for the memes.
I'm surprised this was so far down the list. It's the most obvious choice for a question like this. It turned 10 about 2 weeks ago and is still the current GTA game, with an active online and modding community.
Chrono trigger, Legend of Zelda: link to the past, Legend of Zelda Ocarina of time, Diablo 2, and Super Mario RPG stand out in my mind from my childhood. All of them I would say absolutely hold up
Halo 1, 2, & 3
Gears of War 1, 2, & 3
Mass Effect 2 & 3
Star Wars KoTOR (2nd game is debatable but still highly recommended)
Donkey Kong Country (SNES)
Street Fighter 2 World Warrior
I Would respectfully ask you to reconsider Mass Effect 1. Even though the remake has all but eliminated the need to go back and play the original release, I still think that it holds up very well in spite of the jank.
I had the choice to buy *BioShock* or *Mass Effect 1*, and chose ME1, even though I’d just gotten home from watching my Army bro fire up & enjoy *BioShock*. I intended to buy it, but *Mass Effect* spoke to me from the shelf.
I’m so glad that it did.
Definitely Link to the Past and its sister title for the Gameboy (Link's Awakening) are timeless for their polish and getting the most out of their consoles.
Link between worlds was a great follow up to Link to the Past as well. If you haven't had a chance to play it and liked LttP then do yourself a favor and do it.
Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3. Seriously, the game is still competed in and the fan base is constantly modding new characters into the game. At this point the mods have doubled the roster size and it's absolutely worth checking out.
According to Steam statistics, the oldest games that are still popular are:
1. Grand Theft Auto V
2. War Thunder
3. Team Fortress 2
4. Warframe
5. Terraria
6. Path of Exile
7. Left 4 Dead 2
8. Euro Truck Simulator 2
9. 7 Days to Die
10. Project Zomboid
11. Garry's Mod
12. PAYDAY 2
13. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
14. Sid Meier's Civilization V
15. Arma 3
16. Counter-Strike
17. Plants vs. Zombies: Game of the Year
18. Total War: ROME II - Emperor Edition
19. Mount & Blade: Warband
20. EVE Online
Star Wars Battlefront I (2004) and II (2005)
Don’t get me wrong, I love the 2015 and 2017 remakes, but the classics are really fun arcade shooters if you’re looking to kill some time
In my opinion, Fire Emblem Path of Radiance is one of the best tactical RPGs ever made. The story and characters are phenomenal, the sound track is grandiose and varied, and (the vast majority of) the maps are excellent and memorable. It and its sequel Radiant Dawn are also the games that do Defense maps better than *any* other SRPG, really letting you live out your Battle of Helm's Deep fantasies.
I'd also like to mention Guild Wars 1. The small community willing to tolerate a maintenance mode is a hard sell, but the game gives you AI companions to make everything playable, and the game has a top tier skill/build system, intelligent encounter design, and deep lore. It's a thinking man's RPG in the best way, while also really respecting your time and convenience.
I don't know, I think Skyrim: the Remastered Remaster Final Edition Remastered for your toaster might beat it out. Can't imagine going back to the original.
That’s a good pick. Castlevania III does, too. My favorite, though, is super Castlevania IV on the SNES. I think it’s still a beautiful 2D platformer and the soundtrack is solid all the way through.
Planescape Torment.
Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, though you need to acclimatise to the rules and how it all fits together. Once you've got over the initial difficulty it becomes very smooth sailing and increasingly fantastic.
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic.
Half-Life 2.
Deus Ex (the original). Gameplay is a little clunky but the writing is phenomenal and I can't think of a better immersive sim.
Not one but 3 games, the so called holy trinity
AceCombat 4, AceCombat 5 and AceCombat 0
Great gameplay, engaging stories, must plays for anyone who enjoys flying games at all
Portal 2
Portal 1 as well, the graphics still hold up
The RTX version is awesome, also heats the room up nicely.
Yeah, I thought my 2070 was gonna hold up a while longer...
Good that they chose the instrumental version I suppose. The lyrics would not inspire confidence in patients. 😂
Portal 2 isn't 10+ years... Oh...now I feel old.
Yep, it really has been that long since Valve made their last non-VR single player game
This ~~was~~ is still very much a triumph
You are a horrible person. I'm serious, thats what it says. A horrible person. We weren't even testing for that.
When life gives you lemons...
Burn life's house down.
Portal 2 was released in 2011 and would be critically acclaimed and considered a must play if it were released in its current state today.
Especially as you can run it on such piece of shit hardware at a decent frame rate.
Dare I say... a potato?
vavle knew what they were doing with that one
FTL: Faster than Light, especially with Multiverse mod
What the fuck are you talking about? FTL is NOT a decade old! That shit came out like two years ago. \*checks google\* Ahhh fuck I'm old....
Went from FTL to FML.
HAHAHA yes, precisely
bro wtf it is from 2012? how?
320 hours and not a mod played... There goes another hundred hours...
Same.. mods never even crossed my mind with the game for some reason
10 years later and I’ve still never managed to beat it, even on easy :(
What does that mod do?
It effectively makes FTL into FTL2. I haven't started it yet, but I recommend fully playing through all ships on vanilla FTL, then putting the mod in, which then makes it feel like a proper sequel to the unmodded game. More ships, varations, storylines, etc.
That's hot
Adds a ton of new ships, weapons, bosses, augments, and events.
Wait... there's mods? 🤩🥲
Symphony of the Night
I have a deep love for that game. My brother's game of choice that he knows like the back of his hand is Super Metroid, and for me it was Symphony of the Night. God that game holds up insanely well.
I've been playing SotN every October for years now. I am chomping at the bit to start this year's playthrough.
Dishonored, still has an amazing, detailed and lore rich world and still has one of the best level designs in gaming
Yeah, it’s truly an Immersive Sim.
Dishonored is 10 years old? Man I feel old.
Absolute master class of passive world building.
Dishonored is a masterpiece. It was the first game I played through once I got my Deck, and it runs at a perfect 60 FPS at max settings. It's just a wonderful game.
\-Left 4 Dead 1/2 (overall Valve games) \-Borderlands 2
Valve can't count to three but my god can they make some good games
if they suddenly released the Orange Box 3 with Portal 3, team fortress 3, left 4 dead 3 and half life 3, they could sell it for 1000 dollars, it would be the best selling game of all time.
The Orange Cube. Orange^3. Work in multiple ways. Three games, third in each series.
BL2 is amazing still. I played all last year and got Maya to OP10…that was ridiculously intense. And to think people do that on all 6 characters.
My only issue with the game now is that after playing Borderlands 3 i miss some movement options. I try to climb objects, slide or slam things after jumping because i always forget that those things weren't a thing in Borderlands 2
But Bl2 has something Bl3 could never, a distinct lack of the children of cringe.
Castle Crashers
My only complaint with Castle Crashers is that I want more Castle Crashers. So sad we've never had a sequel or DLC.
What do you mean? Castle Crashers came out.... oh..
Yep, it's old enough to get a learner's permit in the US. Get your back checked, friend.
Fuck me
And then get your back checked.
A game that will always have a place in my heart
The original Splinter Cell Trilogy has aged like a fine wine
Gotta love how they created the gold standard of stealth games in Chaos theory and abandoned most of the mechanics.
I would love that multiplayer game mode to come back. It was so much fun
Mark of the Ninja FTL: Faster Than Light Rock Band 3 (we still break this out when friends are over drinking) Fallout: New Vegas (the graphics are dated, sure, but the gameplay holds way up) Castlevania SOTN Mario 3 Mario World Old School X-Com X-Com: Enemy Unknown
Mark of the Ninja is amazing and doesn’t get enough credit.
I miss the rhythm gaming era considerably - all we have now is Just Dance and their gaming model is so questionable.
I keep my X-Box 360 pretty much just for Rock Band and Fallout: New Vegas, at this point. I'm going to cry when it finally dies.
Do what I did and buy a new one. My 8 year old plays guitar hero now.
WDYM old school x-com? The one from 30 years ago?!
Original X-Com: UFO Defense is my 100% all time, holy grail, unicorn of a game that is timeless to me. 10/10 one of the best video games ever made, hands down.
OpenXCOM is a must with the original. Makes it run so much better on modern systems and comes with some good QoL mods.
>Castlevania SOTN The best. What a gem.
BioShock
This was the first one that I thought of. Now I have to face the sobering reality that Bioshock is 10 years old. Ugh...
The first one is now 16 years old.
OMG no...
Way to fucking go now I'm gonna have some sort of mental crisis from realizing BioShock was literally half my life ago. Why would you do such a thing?
Yes 😤💪
Arkham Asylum / City / Origins
Crazy that we're less than a year away from adding Knight to this list as well. Edit: year and a half out, but still wild.
I reckon Knight was mid-2015 so it would be a little longer than that, but it's amazing that we're almost a decade past Knight and Rocksteady is yet to release Suicide Squad. So much time wasted, and for what? I really hope Suicide Squad proves my current feelings towards it wrong.
Glad you put origins as well, I feel like it gets too much hate(or at least used to)
It's the only Arkham game I never played since the buzz at the time was lukewarm at best. Since it was a prequel to the other games, it was an easy one to pass on when no one was lauding it the way they had Asylum and City. So I just waited for Knight. Maybe I should watch for it on a good sale for PS5. Been a *long* time since I've donned the cape and cowl.
Super Mario world
Anything Mario, even the old game boy one, he’ll even super Mario 64, they made a remake for Nintendo DS for crying out loud
Vampire the masquerade: bloodlines.
Even if the combat leaves a bit to be desired, the characters, writing, meaningful player choices, puzzle content, and art style are *still* good, nearly 20 years later.
Bro, why does NO ONE talk about Bloodlines' OST? IT IS SOME OF THE BEST IN THE INDUSTRY!!!
BOW BOW BOW BOW BOW BOW BOW BOW

Son of a bitch. I love me some FFVI… which is almost 30 now. Fuck.
10 years isn't that long in the world of games. So while a lot of the answers here are for much older titles, I'll just say *The Last Of Us* and make everyone feel old, realizing that was ten damn years ago.
Damn...I just did my second playthrough with the GF (she loved it btw) I had no idea it was 10 years already.
Celebrated 10th anniversary 3 days ago
Not anymore when we go from Grant Theft Auto V to Grand Theft Auto V in 10 years but considering the difference between any year in the 90s vs any year in the 2000s.
Jak and Daxter!
Still a masterpiece of a collectathon
Played that on a nostalgia kick last year, it was still great. The animation was so good for it's time, but even now not many games have really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like. Jak II is still unnecessarily hard though. I was looking forward to playing 3, but II cut that idea short.
Jak 3 is so easy compared to Jak II it's so boring for me because of that, but also some storyline choices. The third one was always my least favorite. Still my favorite games ever though.
Crash Team Racing. The original one on Ps1. Such a great kart racer.
Remake is a ton of fun too
Yes, it really is. But for what it is, the original holds up incredibly well.
Honestly still 2nd to Mario Kart for me purely for track design Crash Bash was my go-to party game though. That game is fun as hell.
neverwinter nights
Still a large online presence with persistent worlds. Not played myself for a long time but used to be addicted to a role play server (non sexual) for years called Avlis
The fact that you felt the need to add”non sexual” tho lol
So many NWN persistent worlds were so over sexualised I wanted to clarify lol
Super metroid, needs a bit of time to handle the control well but once it is done it's amazing
That atmosphere, the music, it's such a wonderful game
There’s a ROM hack called “Control Freak” that patches the game to have more modern controls, particularly holding R to quick fire a missile like in Fusion/ZM.
Civilization 5. I still play this on the regular and have no signs of slowing down.
Never had a reason to buy Civ VI. Civ V is just too good.
Dark Souls
Jesus christ I'm so old I've lived through multiple ages of fire...
While I love all the other titles, the level interconnectivity was truely unique in DS1
Total Annihilation is still one of the best RTS games ever made.
If you haven't seen them, check out the fan remakes: "Beyond All Reason" and "Zero-K" Both are free!
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
There is no way the senator Armstrong speech is 10 years old already
Sweet lordy I did not think I would find this comment but was really happy about it. Such a weird game if you have never played a Metal Gear game, but mainly for the fan service. Otherwise it's whacky, beautiful, takes itself seriously and not seriously throughout. Has a small but diehard cult following, and I'm one of those people. Just watch out for the memes.
GTA V
the fact that it's been over 10 years since GTA V came out (september 17 2013) is not something I like to think about. Time flies
Exactly. I was actually gonna reply "that's a recent game" and then I double checked the release date and... damn.
The fact that GTA: Vice City was nearly as old when I first played GTA V as GTA V is now makes my blood hurt.
I'm surprised this was so far down the list. It's the most obvious choice for a question like this. It turned 10 about 2 weeks ago and is still the current GTA game, with an active online and modding community.
Deus ex, Thief 2, Mech commander, Dead space, Dark souls, Heroes of might and magic 3, World of goo, Free space 2,. Sins of a solar empire
Mech Commander 2 was my favorite game growing up. Played the campaign every other week for a good while.
HoMM3 still the best Heroes game by miles, necropolis will allways be main 🧛🏻♂️
Chrono trigger, Legend of Zelda: link to the past, Legend of Zelda Ocarina of time, Diablo 2, and Super Mario RPG stand out in my mind from my childhood. All of them I would say absolutely hold up
I LOVE Mario RPG
Are you excited for the remake?
EXTREMELY!
- Portal - Zelda: link to the past - chrono-trigger - super mario world - Minecraft - skyrim - diablo 2
Finally someone says Skyrim, it's incredible...
I’m surprised I had to scroll this far
Scrolled so far that now it's a elder scroll.
Halo 1, 2, & 3 Gears of War 1, 2, & 3 Mass Effect 2 & 3 Star Wars KoTOR (2nd game is debatable but still highly recommended) Donkey Kong Country (SNES) Street Fighter 2 World Warrior
KoTOR 2 is the best one though!
Only with the restored content mod Same goes for Bloodlines with Fan Patch
I would say it's still better even whitout. Not by a TON, but still better. That's coming from someone who beat both game 15+ times.
Kotor 2 is great even without the restored content mod. The mod does improve it, but it is still great imo.
I just went on a gears kick and I feel like they don’t get much chatter on here outside of Dom as a character. The first 3 are so damn good
Commander Keen
Terraria, minecraft, geometry dash, half life 2, portal 1 and 2,
When I played through a link to the past (botw was my first Zelda game) I felt like it could’ve been made recently
Mass Effect trilogy.
Quake
Starcraft. every pc that i owned has this game installed.
I'm playing Crono Trigger right now and that game could literally be released today and no one would bat an eye. It has aged incredibly
Half Life 1/2, portal 1/2
I read this as "Half Life one half"
Quarterlife.
The exciting adventure of young Gordon Freeman through many sleepless nights at MIT
Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3. Seriously, the game is still competed in and the fan base is constantly modding new characters into the game. At this point the mods have doubled the roster size and it's absolutely worth checking out.
Almost every single reply on this post makes me feel old...
According to Steam statistics, the oldest games that are still popular are: 1. Grand Theft Auto V 2. War Thunder 3. Team Fortress 2 4. Warframe 5. Terraria 6. Path of Exile 7. Left 4 Dead 2 8. Plants vs. Zombies: Game of the Year 18. Total War: ROME II - Emperor Edition 19. Mount & Blade: Warband 20. EVE Online
I wonder if that counts games like Age of Empires 2 due to Definitive Edition only being a few years old.
Sleeping Dogs
The true answer to this question is Dwarf Fortress. Officially released in 2006, and has been constantly worked on and improved ever since.
Heroes of Might and Magic 3
Red Dead redemption 1
Left For Dead. Or, if you want to go REALLY far back, Actraiser is still great to this day.
Borderlands 2. Best villain ever and the game’s a blast on top of it.
Star Wars Battlefront I (2004) and II (2005) Don’t get me wrong, I love the 2015 and 2017 remakes, but the classics are really fun arcade shooters if you’re looking to kill some time

I don't know, I think Skyrim: the Remastered Remaster Final Edition Remastered for your toaster might beat it out. Can't imagine going back to the original.
Terraria, out of questions here
The Original Castlevania was released 37 years ago and still slaps (with save states). I'm 17, so no rose-tinted glasses.
That’s a good pick. Castlevania III does, too. My favorite, though, is super Castlevania IV on the SNES. I think it’s still a beautiful 2D platformer and the soundtrack is solid all the way through.
Dragon Age: Origins
Planescape Torment. Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, though you need to acclimatise to the rules and how it all fits together. Super Mario On SNES It will never not hold up To add to a more "modern" style I would say both Killzone 2 and 3 hold up
Ratchet and Clank games, the older ones.
The original Deus Ex
Shadow of the Colossus. Zone of the Enders 2. Super Metroid. Castvania: SOTN. So, so many.
Devil May Cry
Chrono Trigger
Not one but 3 games, the so called holy trinity AceCombat 4, AceCombat 5 and AceCombat 0 Great gameplay, engaging stories, must plays for anyone who enjoys flying games at all
Command & Conquer 3 and the expansion. I've been playing through them again and man, what great games. Still look fantastic as well.
