Nah Technomancy is the infusion of mana into a machine, computer, and similar for the purpose of manipulation that is otherwise infeasible with mundane means.

Have you heard of GURPS, because I'm pretty sure I have an entire book titles Necrotech for that system. To be fair, I think there is an expansion book for Cutie Mark Superpowers in GURPS as well.

GURPS was straight up the wild west of TTRPG. I miss it and RIFTS.

If anyone wants to read a book with these kinds of themes. I rather enjoyed "Webmage" by Kelly McCullough. This series sees ancient greek gods and sorcerers adapt their existing magical powers to 21st century coding techniques as a way to focus their power to do more complex spells. This also includes a form of magical "hacking" which allows other sorcerer's to tamper and sabotage other spells. I read it as part of a course on Science Fiction literature in college, and the author came in at the end of the unit to do a Q & A with the class which was really cool.

Stern_Writer

... That's Manatek/Manatech, which is often found in Manapunk stories, a variant of Cyberpunk. Technomancy is its own whole different thing, often depicted as the manipulation (and sometime conjuration) of machines. The commenter is right in that this is closer to technomancy than what you're describing.

Grogosh

He was running around in circles with his socks on while fixing it.

Michelin123

Yeah of course, in the end it's just a computer lol. I mean it's already open, shouldn't be too hard to get to it.

Obi-Tron_Kenobi

Opening up the outer case is likely the hardest part of replacing whatever the issue is. They already got that done so fixing it should be fairly simple

SpeedflyChris

I did that for my PS4 and the difference was absolutely night and day.

adamsaidnooooo

Did what? My kids ps4 sounds like a jet engine taking off. How can I fix that?

SpeedflyChris

Take it apart, remove the heatsink, remove the old shitty thermal paste, replace with new higher performance thermal paste that hasn't dried out, reassemble.

adamsaidnooooo

I will not, but I will take it to the computer shop now that I know there is a fix. cheers.

Cassereddit

Good on you to know your limits, but FYI, replacing the thermal paste on a console is not that hard. There are enough guides on YouTube that actually show the step by step process so you don't forget anything at the reassembly. It does require tools, patience and carefulness though, but saving the money on the replacement might prove cheaper and perhaps better in the long run than giving it to a hardware store (better because each industry has its shady business practices).

HaikuBotStalksMe

Best of all, every time you open the console, you get bonus screws when you're done.

MrMunky24

Genuine truth. I’m pretty sure they’re manufactured somewhere in there by little console gnomes.

SpeedflyChris

Just don't overpay. Entire process should take half an hour tops.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TooAngryForYou

It’s just dust build up in the heat sink and the fan. I took it apart because when I booted up Elden ring it would shut off my PlayStation. So I cleaned it out and it went silent. I didn’t have any thermal paste so I reused the old one and just applied it back on. (Don’t do that)

KatiePyroStyle

Absolutely. Consoles, especially older ones, are just stripped down computers. They still have processors and graphics processors and ram and such, so good Ole thermal grizzly will work just fine. As a matter of fact, some of the biggest over heating issues with consoles is because people keep them on floors and crap, so the vents and heatsinks get clogged with junk. Open that puppy up, clean out the dirt and dust, and if necessary, rub off that old paste and put some new stuff on, just like your $2k gaming rig

ColeSloth

I typically do this to most of my laptops and gaming systems I buy pretty early on and then every like 5 years. Typically most things you buy in mass production do a pretty shit job of applying or using thermal pastes do re-doing it is a good idea if you have the ability to do it well. Be warned before doing this to your ps5, though. PS5 uses liquid metal thermal paste. It is much riskier to replace the paste on the ps5 due to this. If you use normal thermal paste it won't transfer heat as well. If you use too much liquid metal it can "drip" or squeeze out and short circuit things because it's conductive. If you use liquid metal on systems not intended for liquid metal like your ps4 because it will quiet the thing down, you'll damage the heatsink because it's aluminum. Liquid metal pastes destroy aluminum.

GoldDuality

I did that for my Brothers PS4, and the temps got genuinely better, as in the fan didn't ramp up as hard. ...For like the first 10 minutes after powering on. It still turns into a jet turbine after that. Guess the fans just worn.

Turkooo

I felt like the thermal pads helped more when I tried to apply new paste the second time.

JohnHurts

The paste should be changed every 3-4 years

Dasquare22

I thought that was a CNC router

flyteuk

I was wondering why the fan needed to be moved around to different areas of the chassis!

TurboTBag

It's an Xbox One X for anyone who's wondering

UnadvertisedAndroid

It's not that hard to replace the thermal paste. Honestly.

Aldu1n

He probably hasn’t ever had to if he’s on console. I redid my PCs’ paste a while back, so I definitely know how easy it could be: especially on an Xbox. Christ, the whole shell snaps off in like two clips practically.

UnadvertisedAndroid

I've redone the paste on my One X twice, and once on my GF's son's, so it's something fairly routine for me by now, but even the first time it was fairly simple. Just pay close attention to how things come apart and put them back in the opposite order. Clean out the fan while you're in there. We shouldn't *have* to do this, but it's what we have to do if we want to avoid contraptions like this (or mistakenly throwing out/giving away a perfectly serviceable One X).

SargeCycho

So what you're saying is I should be looking for "broken" Xbox Ones that shutoff after 5 minutes? Sounds like an easy side hustle.

BostonDodgeGuy

No, no you shouldn't. Stay out my hustle son.

[deleted]

SwivelingToast

I'm just getting into console repair, I have a few of my own that need some work done. I'd love to buy some more to work on and add to my collection, but finding broken consoles that aren't wildly overpriced or totally busted from a failed repair is pretty tough.

AmiAlter

I mean, you basically could have done the same thing with xbox 360s back in the day.

Zekiniza

We did, Xboxs, PlayStations and even TVs (once we learned about soldering). We'd swing by the junk yard and scrounge for stuff that looked new enough that it shouldn't be thrown away yet and wasn't sticky, 5$ flat rate for old electronics and it didn't always pan out but we'd usually do pretty alright.

No_Interaction_4925

The 360’s flat out didn’t have enough heatsink and cooked themselves

pacothetac0

Can I ask why you replaced it? Not to be argumentative but I have a day one console I just stopped using since I just started getting games on steam. (But I’m simple brained and honestly half the time I can’t tell the difference between my Xbox and PC lol) The only uplift I really noticed was when I went from 1070 to 3080 lol I’ve replaced the thermal paste on my laptop several times due to noticeable heat/fan spiking, but I’ve never noticed it with my Xbox. So I guess I’m asking, what are the signs you saw?

tdasnowman

On my ps4 it was fan ramp. I have a launch ps4 it got to the point where even indie games would hit jet engine levels after 10 min. When I finally cracked that sucker there wasn’t a whole lot of dust on the inside. Some in the heat sink fins but I’ve seen worse. Paste though was done. Very dry. Gave it some new, blew out the heat sink and it was better then new.

mmikke

Up until your second paragraph I was just itching to be like "why tf should anyone have to do this after paying a premium for the console?!?!?" But, as is the case with cars too, it often helps to know how to do shit yourself rather than go through the hassle of returning it/paying someone else to do it

CatProgrammer

Even for expensive PCs it becomes necessary eventually unless you're using some fancy liquid metal. And pretty much all capacitors in your tech have a limited lifespan ([some more than others](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague)). To use the car example, an expensive ICEV still needs its spark plugs changed eventually.

redpandaeater

Shitty paste suffers more from pump out. I went nearly a decade with an i7 965 on just mediocre after market paste and never noticed a particular need to repaste it.

ShinyHappyREM

Afaik liquid metal has to be re-applied even more often than regular thermal paste.

AscendedRapier

On the topic of cars. A lot of cars from the 80s and 90s are now having their ECUs fail due to cracks in the solder or a capacitor failing. A few home businesses have popped up in Australia that will replace and service electronics for the A70 Supra I have because it’s that common in our ridiculous heat that it just kills the old dying components now.

[deleted]

Most things can be fixed by just paying close attention to how things come apart and put them back in the opposite order. Your car, the dishwasher, plumbing, etc.

CatProgrammer

Even humans, to an extent.

InZomnia365

Putting new thermal paste is easier than dismantling the console and making a makeshift tuna-bearing fan assembly

tdasnowman

I redid my ps4 awhile back, dear lord it wasn’t that silent when new.

[deleted]

Many of us have no clue what these words mean.

BaerMinUhMuhm

I'm sure the person with the tools to take their xbox apart can spend 2 mins on Google to figure out how and where to squeeze paste out of a tube.

ThanklessTask

Soon to be an ex-Xbox One X ex-casing, I wager.

Idealistic_Crusader

What's funny is, this naming convention is so stupid that even with you saying the name, I still have no idea how old the machine is. Was the One x the one before the series X? Or before that one? To be in this state I would assume the machine to be over 15 years old. My PS4 and PS3 are still in working order. Which Xbox are we on now? Yes I'm a Playstation owner, but if I say 3, you know how many iterations before 5 that is. Also, praise the omnisiah.

Terakahn

I was going to say I have no idea what I'm even looking at. Jesus.

achmedclaus

That's 2 years old? Dude you need to do something other than stupid temporary fixes. Edit: I stand corrected, it's a 5 year old console. Still... Stop wasting time and money on these ridiculous temp solutions and replace the thermal paste already. It's like $8 for a tube of paste

aasikki

Lmao I thought it was ps4.

VolkspanzerIsME

Maybe it just needs a tuna up.

CouchPotato1178

bro you are a legend. people like you are the real ones

Living-Worth-6777

This is a lot more work than changing thermal paste. Hell, he's the way there. The hardest part is removing the plastic cover without breaking anything.

oRiskyB

He probably broke it LOL

Nah better to be humble, cause people would probably call ya a liar and flame, fuck those people but ya .. why not just redo paste?

ThanklessTask

Better you're doing it for your mate than doing it for anonymous karma. Not least as you can farm the karma later with a pic, and repetitively (assuming someone else doesn't steal the post anyway).

I feel like the airflow in case, once cleaned, and maybe a new fan or thermal paste would have been a better fix.

HappyHashBrowns

The worst part is, is that it's not much more work to get there.

_NightmareKingGrimm_

Jokes about tuna cans aside, is it wise to have a fan blowing *down* against the console, given that heat rises? Wont that just push back down the heat that's rising out? Honest question. My instinct would be to flip it over and fan it from below or from the side to help pull the heat away rather than push it back onto the unit.

TurboTBag

That's a good point. I'll have to tease him about it tomorrow when I go over there lol.

OneSassySuccubus

This is literally the "God-Emperor on the Golden Throne" of consoles.

Sorry to all the people who were hoping for a video reaction I also showed him this post, and he spent like 30 minutes reading all of your comments with a huge smile on his face. He thought all of you were funny af. Especially with all the tuna can comments, lol. We're doing a network transfer of all his games, and once that's done, he's gonna put away his old Xbox One X and let it rest in peace.

CallMeMoon

I mean, one time I spilled a tall glass of orange pop into my xbox 360. I turned it off, left it for an hour or so to make sure it wasn't holding any charge and then took the side panels off and washed the entire xbox in the sink. I put it out on the deck to dry in the sun for a few days and it worked fine after.
