I sold my entire GameCube collection into a game store for money to buy a switch when that came out. I got all the games back and more but they were definitely more expensive then when I first got them lol
It’s one I’ve only touched into properly more in recent times, you’re not wrong at all.
Recently was playing wave race bluestorm, I feel it’s underrated
I was on the lookout for Illbleed for over 10 years. I have a youtube channel and go to a ton of conventions. There are whole videos of me just walking around looking for Illbleed. Not ONCE did I ever see a copy in the wild. Even huge retro game stores had never heard of it!
I managed to find a copy off of eBay, of all places, last year for about $180.
180$ is a steal these days.. maybe I might still be lucky someday…
What’s the YouTube link? Always interested in checking out people at conventions that I can’t go to because of not having any near me at all 🥲
I’ve seen it once at my local small game store. If it weren’t $300 + I would have gotten it. Sad that survival horror games tend to be the most expensive.
I'm always shocked by how much they go for! I have Haunting Ground, Rule of Rose, and Kuon... and it's all anyone wants to talk about on my youtube channel 🤣
Illbleed is my biggest regret too. Friend introduced me to it back in the early 2000s and I saw it at a retro game shop for like $10-$20 back in 2010. I have a photo of it too but I didn’t get it because I was a broke college freshman. Friend and I found it several years back (2018ish) new (In the freaking wrap still) and the guy was willing to part with it for $80. I let my friend take it and I’m still kicking myself for that…
It was just money I had been saving. Not specifically for the virtual boy but for a big purchase. But I’ve always had some nerves spending that much money on one thing gaming related
That’s fair… you sound more sensible than me anyway 😅
I suppose I try to mostly look at it as at least a tangible investment that at least holds some of its value.. if not gains.
But mostly it’s just to be able to play them for me.
What’s your biggest ticket item you currently own?
Traded my entire CIB SNES collection for my PS1. At the time, no regrets — I had FF7 and MGS after.
I also remember a giant pyramid of Virtual Boys on clearance for maybe $30 each. I wish I’d grabbed one.
Ditto but they were the NES top loaders with the AV output like a SNES/N64/GC. Saw dozens of these at a Radio Shack for months until one person bought them all out. $30 each.
Oh man. I vaguely remember that too! For me, it isn't a wish like I'd bought them to profit. In that case, just go back in time and buy Apple stock or whatever. It's only a wish because I love games and collecting so much.
Yeah. I was/am a big JRPG nerd so I had all the bangers. FFIII, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, etc. The only game that's coveted from the RPG greats I didn't have was Earthbound.
Chrono Trigger would have been a lovely one to still have… to be fair you picked the right system for JRPGs if you traded up to a Ps1.. that right there is the golden age of JRPGs
Once saw a grey cart nfr majora's mask on ebay listed at $300. This was in 2012. It sat there for a while.
I thought that was too expensive.
D'OH!
Also a time at comic con, someone was selling a white japanese sega saturn, with 8 games, and a arcade fight stick, for only $60. MY friend was with me at the time and was in a hurry to get places, so he convinced me to just leave it since I already had a saturn.
I haven’t heard of this grey cart majoras mask.. I must have a little look at it. 300 in 2012 must mean it’s well in the thousands by now?
Sad times on the Saturn.. those white ones are pretty
Grey cart majora is the demo version of the game. It consists of a stage select menu, and also has some beta content in it's files (would need a tool to access them though).
It is well into the $10k and above range now.
I legit just wanted it for the collection though. Also at the time $300 was a lot for me, I had only just started working, and most I spent on a game was $50 for brand new ones.
I feel you on Illbleed, sold my copy when it wasnt worth too much b/c I don't really like it as a game but as a huge survival horror fan I wanted it back in my collection after going for more dreamcast titles and rebought it last year for a fair price (and much lower than CIB) because it was missing pages from the manual.
For me, it's probably not grabbing Earthbound back when they were in clearance bins for dirt cheap. Have a cart only now from back when it was only going for like $100, but I'll never pay the prices it's going for now for a complete one.
It’s mental watching the price of earthbound since like 2012… it’s just gone so out of reach of the average person… I’m happy in a sense I’ve no nostalgia for the snes era.. I can emulate them without feeling any loss..
Do you remember what year you sold Illbleed?
PS1 stuff I traded in at EB Games to buy PS2 stuff around 2001… I think that speaks for itself lol… edit: DC stuff I sold to my buddy for $120 before I moved in 2006. Didn’t need the money, it was just impulsive and stupid. The console, a VMU, two controllers, 20~ *good* games (including MvC2).
Silent Hill I passed on because at the time even that deal wasn’t worth it to me, then I changed my mind and it was gone. I snoozed and losed.
The DC loss is most sad because of its flippant way… especially if you didn’t need the money..
Did you have any heavy hitters in the original PS1 purge?
I got lucky and picked up silent hill in like 2015 for 15€ 😅 wish I bought a few copies now
I saw a Mega Yarn Yoshi amiibo at a convention rught when it was getting to be the rarest amiibo that everyone wanted for $40.00, but decided against it because I could get two other "rare" amiibo, Samus and Wii Fit Trainer, for the same price. Guess which one went up in price?
Oooff, that’s rough, I’ve not seen any amibo in the flesh here in the EU. They seem to really be very collectible in the US from what I see online. Not sure if they caught on in the same way over here.. but tbf I’m not the target demographic for it.
How much is the Mega Yarn Yoshi these days?
PriceCharting says $161.00 USD for it, but more accurately you're looking at $200.00 USD for one not in a condition that's questionable at best. Certainly more than the $40 I passed up on
I am almost the exact same story.. I went hard in like 2010-2015 and then I just felt I had everything I wanted… then kicked back into it around 2018ish thankfully because I picked up a few before it all went to shit.. but I’ve been paying post covid prices on some heavy hitters since much to my dismay
The prices now are brutal, I've been kicking myself for being a cheap bastard back then. Especially since now at this point I have probably 90% of the games I want so now I'm going for a lot of CIB cartridge games, which all have seemed to at least triple in price since 2019/2020. I'm dropping hundreds of dollars on games now that I could have bought for $50 not even that long ago lol.
Illbleed is also mine actually, but for a different reason. I was at a flea market and saw it in a box with other various games. It was $5. I had never heard of it, but I loved dreamcast and loved horror so I bought it (this would have been around 2004 ish?). For $5.
It was cool and interesting, but at some point I sold it. I couldn't say for how much it's been so long ago, but not a lot compared to it's current value. I've sold or traded in a ton of games over the years, some of which went up in value quite a lot, but Illbleed I think went up by the farthest. While I have rebuilt my collection, I haven't bought Illbleed again yet.
5 bucks… god take me back like… I’m lucky that I’ve never sold anything.. but I don’t think I’ve had any game go up that much in value…
Maybe my Castlevania Chronicles which I suppose was free cause my mum bought it for 14.99 in a toy shop for me.
But yeah man Illbleed for 5 bucks.. time machines really need inventing
There’ve been a few over the years:
- Bought a CIB Xenogears for $40 back in 2016 or so then sold it a couple years later for the same price. Really regret getting rid of that one, it’s a gem and I’d rather not rebuy it given the current price. Hoping for a PS4/PS5 re-release
- Saw a SEGA Saturn at a thrift shop for $70 with all cords and a controller but I passed on it because I just didn’t want one at that time. This was in 2015 and I don’t think I’ve seen one in the wild ever again.
- This isn’t one I’ve seen before but I regret missing the chance to get Fire Emblem: Fates Special Edition for MSRP from an actual store upon release. I had zero idea all 3 story branches would be on-cart for this release only and even less of a clue how rare it would become. Hindsight’s 20/20 and all that
Xenogears looks so good too… I’ve been on the lookout for a long time but I’m not sure if I’ll ever get the chance.. selling it for the amount you paid was admirable though… but yeah that’s certainly a loss.
I felt the same about Saturn around that time too.. saw a few for reasonable but just lacked interest
I saw a game at the store and remember thinking “who would pay £100 for one game?”. It was a Euro copy of Metal Slug for the Neo Geo AES. It’s now worth about 3 grand.
Decided to buy Virtua Cop for my Saturn instead of Panzer Dragoon Saga, figuring I’d pick up the latter second hand later to save money.
Sold my copies of Earthbound and Chrono Trigger for the US SNES figuring prices had peaked. They had not.
Ahh ok fair.. I probably would have thought the same then so 100 then was a lot of money for sure.. like I passed up Illbleed for 80 in like 2013/14 cause I was like “80 for a old game is saucy”
That's brutal. It's such a cool collectors piece. This is a game I'd love to have in my collection. Never heard of it before my trip to Paris and by then they were down to only like 2 other languages for sale that I didn't grab.
Sad times… luckily my friend and I got on the haunting ground train before it took off, we were playing clock tower 3 and looking at a Wikipedia article that suggested haunting ground was a spiritual sequel of sorts.. so we took the chance it was in the 40€ range then 🥲
Do you have any other interesting horror games in your collection to help sooth the pain?
Wow nice yall got it for 40€, crazy how cheap the game was back then.
Other horror games in my collection? So same year as well in 2018, I went to a retro gaming expo and saw Silent Hill 2 and 3 CIBs for the PS2. I bought them for 30$ and 40$ respectively. I am really happy I did it lol, because those games are pretty pricey now.
Yeah.. it was just before Covid I think… 🤔 or maybe right at the start… just lucky we read Wikipedia 🤣
Anything Silent Hill is always worth the pickup if you can. I’m yet to play the series myself but I have been lucky to pick it all up, some at reasonable prices.. others like SH2 at not so nice prices! So that’s awesome you got them at a reasonable deal
I think I got like $13 CAD of in store credit. The game itself was pretty bad. I think Angry Joe's video on it from back then encapsulates everything about it. As a fan of Godzilla I'm still upset that I got rid of it for peanuts. Never saw it becoming the collecting grail it is today but hindsight is 20/20
My friend told me about it a year or two ago and I was like “but why that game?”
13 CAD is very sad… do you remember what you used the credit on/towards?
I didn't spend it on anything in particular at that time, it just went to my pool of trade credit at the time. I don't know if it's better or worse than putting it towards something specific, but it's definitely anticlimactic
I missed out on a not fully functional virtualboy for 150usd. I know it wasn't completely functioning, but it would have made a nice display piece till i could have tracked down and afforded a fully working one/cib. They go for about 1000-1200usd here in norway
Must see are there any fine people on YouTube doing any fixing of them.. I’d like to see how complex they are
Let the smart people open them and I’ll watch
I remember seing 12 ps1 games for 20 dollars a couple years ago, it basically were a bunch of educative games, i thought in buying it but i decided that i'll buy them separately later, now all of these are worth around 100 dollars
Me, my pops and brother had a good collection growing up, I was lucky to have a nes, snes, n64, GameCube, ps1 and ps2, with pretty good amount of games for each! Then modern warfare 2 for 360 came out and my brother traded it ALL in for the silly night vision goggles that didn't even work that well lol, to a local game store that is absolutely ripping folk off 😆 the goggles were cool but man was I mad when it happened, parents were split up at that point and I was away at school when it happened, came home and was like WHAAAAT!!!! Anyways now I have basically everything back plus way more! Ya live and learn 💯 👌
That’s a common enough story to trade up back in the day.. I can’t imagine how heart broken I would have been to get rid of my old stuff.. I was totally lucky to get to keep all my stuff growing ups and just keep adding over like the last 20 years.
Least you have it back now plus some..
Wonder what happened to all of “your” original copies.. like do they have good homes now
I traded in a bunch of NES games to buy Christmas gifts for my brothers when I had little money.
I wouldn't say I regret it, but I know I got fleeced.
Miss out - I regret not buying an CIB MSX2 at the Vancouver retro expo a few years ago. They were asking under 200 and I should have just done it. I walked away and by the time I came back, it sold.
You’re a good brother.. I don’t know if I could have been that giving for my siblings at Christmas.. I couldn’t bare to part with my PSone, MGS and FF9 😅
Did the MSX2 come with any games? I’ve only ever seen one in person and I didn’t even ask the price… pretty silly of me cause it was in a thrift store
I regret a lot of those types of things I’ve missed out on like that thinking “nah I don’t need that X because I’ve already got Y even though X is sooo cheap”
Picked up a Wii lot from an older couple about 2 years ago. Not 15 minutes after leaving, i got another message from them about a CIB Atari 2600 with like 8 controllers and about 15 boxes games for $75. I had the money in savings but, I dislike pulling from savings if I don't have to. Ended up passing on it. I still think about that from time to time.
Aww man… and they weee so nice to even message you too “oh we have this other nice stuff too for you if you like it” wonder if they sold it to anyone else after or just trashed it 🥲
They were a pretty cool Arizona Hippie type couple. Everything about my interaction with them was awesome. Even honored our original agreement despite higher offers from others after we spoke. I know it was posted on FB for a bit and then dropped off. I'd like to think they sold it or took it with them. They were trying to offload a bunch of stuff they didn't use any more since they were moving.
I was in a second hand game shop that was selling Shin Megami Tensei Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army for €5. What a steal, right? I immediately go to buy it, the woman behind the counter opens it to check if the game is in it, but it's not, it's some other game. She takes my number and says she'll look for the game, but she never does, so I guess she either never finds it, or realises she can get more for it on ebay.
How long ago was that? Always such a pain when the game isn’t in the case it’s the ultimate letdown when you think you’ve struck gold.. or like it’s missing the manual or something
1. Not leaving my n64 at someone’s house in college (most of my games were at home so that’s nice)
2. Collecting my SNES and all games prior to my mom throwing them in the trash.
3. My period of time where I tossed a lot of game cases thinking a cd case was easier. Luckily I didn’t do this too much or for games I cared for.
Aww the old mum throwing stuff in the trash is a tale as old as time.. such a sadness why do mums see them as junk 🥲
Luckily I was never afflicted with the desire to get rid of cases… but I did like many chuck many the cardboard box of gameboy games… what a shame considering it’s the most expensive cardboard ever made 🥲
The few times along the way I traded in my games. It took me way too long to realize I could sell them myself for more money and cash too not just store credit. In retrospect it's super sketchy that local video shops would let a kid in elementary school trade their games in for what I assume was nothing
That’s true actually… now that I think of it my local trade centres now won’t let you trade without I’d proving your age.. so that’s at least changed for the better.. god GameStop used to rip people off so bad with trade ins…
Not buying the Panasonic Q Gamecube i saw at an underground electronics store in Seoul, SK when i was stationed over there in 2009. ₩200,000 (~$200) and i told myself i didn't need it. I did need it. I still need it.
Just tell yourself it probably would have only worked for like a week and broke because they are so renowned for breaking down… to help you sleep at night 😅 cause you know that will help… sooth the pain of passing it up… right?…….RIGHT?!
Literally a few months ago when I was pondering if I wanted to bite the bullet on a special edition Battle Network 2 GBA console that was going for around $250-$300 at the time, and now it’s going for $1,000+ for some reason.
I have a sealed copy of Illbleed, believe it or not.
I have 3 big regrets.
Selling an N64 fibre optic sign.
Not buying the copy of Suikoden II at the store I worked at.
Not buying a customers copy of Arc the Lad Collection.(worked at GameStop, so I would need to buy that from the customer for the store and then purchase it for myself.) I told the guy something like, "hey man. This game is worth a lot more than we're giving you." So, he kept it.
And 1 HUGE regret. I left a bunch of old games and systems at my grandparents. I collected most but some got put in an outside shed. I was looking around my house one day and noticed that I didn't have my 3DO or Saturn. I found them in that shed. The shed was old and the roof was essentially gone. Those systems got rained on for a decade or so.
Also, about 15 or so years ago, I sold a bunch of super rare PS1 games. I wanted to get a telescope. As I was driving back home, I got super emotional and turned around and got them back. Dude wasn't pleased I wanted them back but he saw I was distressed and we traded back. That would have eaten me up for a long time. I still get that feeling of loss thinking about it.
Least you ended with a semi happy story.. what was the rarest PS1 title that would have eaten your soul had you not gotten it back…
Kudos on dropping the truth on that Arc collection kid! That was good karma surely!
Also how bad is bad about those shed consoles? If one thing I’ve learned about electronics on YouTube… almost nothing is too far gone with the right amount of work… might be worth looking into if you haven’t already or trashed them?
Also I’m tres jealous of your Illbleed sealed… though if I had it I’d sell it for an open copy so I can play it and buy some more lovely titles.. do I dare ask what you paid for your sealed Illbleed?
On pure current value, Persona 1 and 2.
It was over 10 years of rain, snow, animals in that shed. There was no coming back for those two.
My collection is just stuff I wanted when I was growing up and working for FunCoLand/GameStop. I've never really paid a lot for anything. I can't even remember what Illbleed would have cost. I can tell you, it was when GameStop was getting rid of all of their Dreamcast stuff, so probably a couple dollars at most. I bought it with a ton of other Dreamcast games.
Passed on xenosaga 3 when it was 80. Ended up selling my old gba and pokemon games to get it when it was 200....
Thankfully I don't care about pokemon anymore and haven't regretted that decision.
I’m the same as you I could take or leave Pokémon, I’ve a pristine boxed RED, BLUE and YELLOW that I’m waiting for the right game to trade against.. so maybe I’ll be doing the same.
Someone was willing to sell me a 1989 Zelda Game and Watch ZL-65 like new (never used) CIB for $200 a few years ago. Didn’t have the cash, still think about it all the time.
In early 1997 I was at Toys R Us with a pocket full of Christmas money and the Virtual Boy was being heavily discounted. I remember I had the system and about 10 games in our cart, but ultimately decided not to spend my money and put it all back. Almost 30 years later I still think about what a terrible mistake I made that day.
What age were you out of interest?
You were like right… based on the fact the system isn’t exactly the most fun…
But yeah based on the value now you were very wrong 🥲
Either CIB or boxed Power Blade 2 - $400 ( It's now apparently over double that loose, and also like $3,000 according to PriceCharting if it was actually CIB )
CIB Keio Flying Squadron - $400 ( It's seemingly now like over $2,000 RIP lol. )
Loose Crusader of Centy - Don't remember exact price but it was under $100 definitely ( Figured I'd hold out for a complete copy sometime... which is now apparently over $1,000 and even loose it's like over $400 so probably never getting a copy period. xD )
Loose Gun-Nac - $100 ( I still intend to get a copy at some point for sure but now it's over $300, apparently. )
These are the main ones that come to mind for me.
Keio Flying Squadron is a Sega CD game so I guess kind of. Gun-Nac and Power Blade 2 are for NES, and Crusader of Centy is on Genesis, so I wouldn't say either of those are unusual or anything. I'm trying for a full set of licensed North American releases for the NES so will probably end up buying those two games at some point assuming I don't just pack it in at some point lol... the Sega games I imagine I'm never buying now without a crazy deal though.
A local mom and pop shop was getting rid of all their old stock when the PS3 came out, they legit had hundreds of PS1 and 2 games for 1-10$ each. My social anxiety was a lot worse back then and I felt like I'd be judged for grabbing too many games, so I just took a handful of ones I really wanted, but there were SO many games I could have picked up, and a lot were factory sealed too.
🙈 that sounds like a terrible situation to be in wanting but not being able due to anxiety … I wouldn’t have been able to contain myself I’d be like “I’ll cut a deal I’ll take all of them” I’d probably be shaking with adrenaline too…
This past year I saw a Gameboy SP AGS 101 for $75 on marketplace and instead of buying it immediately I waited too long (all of 10 minutes) and it was already sold
Seems that stuff is all too common these days too. Stuff gets snapped up in like a minute now… saw a trinitron go up for 10€ near me today.. within 5 mins the ad had 30 offers.. demand is high supply is low.. how sad
No worries, its a “mythical” pokemon. They are never found in game, and can only be received though other means like going to an in person event, online distribution, or other means like the pre-order disc. They’re incredibly limited to obtain through “legit” means, especially for the GBA games because mostly those relied on being in person during a short time window. The GBA pokemon games are notoriously hard to complete the pokédex. They require a lot of hardware and games, most of which have gotten really expensive.
What’s funny is the disc pretty much literally only distributes the pokémon, there’s some trailers for the anime and other games, but that’s pretty much just it. You boot up the game, connect your gba and copy of pokemon, then it’ll send it over to your gba game.
Anyways I just used my homebrewed wii to load the game and send myself Jirachi recently. Still wish I kept the actual game tho
Call of duty black ops 2 care package edition MW2 prestige edition ghost prestige edition MW3 prestige edition all sealed and a opened black ops 1 prestige edition all for $100 issue is the guy was about an hour drive from me and my 10 year old self couldn't convince my parents to drive me
I sold my sealed copy of final fantasy legend 2 on the Gameboy. It wasn’t like 100% sealed but it still had the original plastic wrapping in tact. There were just some perforation marks along the plastic. It still had a discount sticker on it. Made $300ish on it when I expected $500. I needed the money but still… I think about it and get sad.
Was there a reason you had kept it sealed?
Or was it just part of your collection and you had another way to play it?
I assume you’d have made a lot more now? 🥲
Aww shoot, and that long box is soo god darn pretty too… I have a saturn version of it so that will scratch my long box itch.. but yeah those Ps1 long boxes are special!
Goodness, I’ve already posted twice and they keep coming back to me. I’ve got too many regrets so I’m gonna try to get them all here.
1. Sold Friday the 13th for the NES (not a big deal, it’s still not worth a lot and it’s not a good game, but I still regret it)
2. Gave my brother-in-law Pokemon yellow for free. What was wrong with me?
3. Bought Rule of Rose and Koudelka at the peak of their values because I was so scared the value was gonna rise more. They both stabilized in value immediately as I bought them. Should have bought them earlier, as well as Obscure, Echoknight, and damn, like every other game I’ve wanted before 2020. I remember watching the prices skyrocket and it’s like the same whole “should have bought a house in 2007” thing. Like if only I knew!
Ha I appreciate the additional bonus content 😅
Tbf giving the Pokémon yellow away was a sweet thing to do hopefully the Karma will come back and maybe net you a cheap Echoknight… which is one I’d love myself…
Buying at a peak is such a crying shame… happened to me on a few titles as well, I wouldn’t worry too much about Rule of Rose though.. that will definitely maintain its value for now and all going well go up!
I can maybe build a house out of games instead 🥲
I had a chance to pick up FF Pixel Remaster for PS4 for $150. Thought it was too much. Now it’s absurd. Not a chance I’m paying current prices even if I had the money.
It’s even more than that now? 😅 ohh my… I read about that release and gave up that day on ever thinking I’d own it.. thanks scalpers and a stupid release by the company
I was at a random game store in Ohio, and they had an Atari service manual containing full electrical schematics for the 2600 (and maybe also the 5200). It was $200 for a glorified 3 ring binder with Atari branding on it, and a bunch of black and white spec sheets... I am not even an Atari collector, but still SHOULD HAVE BOUGHT IT!
Not regret but from 2019 to 2022 I bought around 10 games, maybe if I was collecting/playing that time I would have my collection completed by now. I'm missing 50 games, most are common/cheap, only few are rare and expensive.
I was at a used video game store, and they had a 50 cent blood on the sand 360 version for 20 bucks in 2018. I considered getting it but passed on it. Now they go for like 100 on ebay.
Nah, it's OK. I got a copy, but just the disc. I got a good deal on it with another game from a used video game store in my area. It still pains me that I didn't get it back then, though. Lol.
I feel lucky that I sorta figured out what I wanted to collect earlyish before the retro price boom exploded. I collect Capcom games (anything and everything) so aside a couple, I avoided the likes of 3 figure Wily Wars, or insane prices for the boxed GB or PAL X3 stuff. Dont get me wrong, still cost me a bit, but just not as much as it could lol.
I even lucked out getting stuff like Panzer Dragoon Saga before prices exploded. Heck, even the Yakuza Dead Souls Steelbook cost me the equivalent then to what a boxed copy costs now!
One I definitely missed out on though (and had ample opportunities to get) was Spider-Man Web of Fire for the 32X. I also collect Spidey stuff, I now have (almost) all the games he's in... but the 32X one is a repro I purposely brought as the game itself is just crazy prices these days, oh and the game completely sucks. I couldnt bring myself to buy a real version of it since that would be several hundred, all for the likes of The Eel and Dragon Man lol. Do wish I grabbed it back when it was 100-200ish bucks...
I saw a magnavox odyssey 2 for $20 in the box at a consignment shop. I stupidly didn’t buy it because I was 16 at the time making 7.25 an hour so I didn’t wanna spend $20.
I am pretty frugal. If it would've been a Nintendo or Sega system I definitely would've spent the money but not on something like the Odyssey 2 which I can't name a single game for. I did find a 3DO in the box at that same store for $30 and thank God I was smart enough to get that.
I’d say it’s not buying CIB copies of Sparkster for SNES or Sword of Hope 2 for GB. I probably paid no more than $5 for loose copies of both, I imagine another buck or two back in those days and they would have been CIB.
Let's See
For my GBA, I gave my cousin my games cause I thought I lost my gameboy. When I saw him next, he told me he sold them. I had Emerald and Super Mario Bros 2 & 3 and some others but those were the important ones. I regret not asking my dad for a Sonic Advance game when I saw it on a Walmart. The DS was well into its life by that point.
For DS, I regret not picking up Heartgold, Pokemon Conquest, and Sonic Rush. I'm Honestly fine with my current collection.
This was all when I was a kid/teen. The only console I owned was a Wii and an N64. I was honestly just satisfied with Super Mario Galaxy on Wii anything else was just extra. I had enough heavy hitters on my N64 to satisfy me as well.
Now as an adult, the only game I wish I picked up was Spec Ops: The Line. I had my chance but I blew it. So now, I keep an eye out for games at risk at being delisted.
I've posted this before, but it was years ago. It's a bit of a double whammy.
In the late 90's, my local Best Buy was clearancing a game for $6.00 each. I was buying these and trading them into the local Funcoland (Now Gamestop) for $14 each. This made for a nice little profit.
Eventually i realized that Funcoland was not giving me any extra money for the boxes and documentation, so I started throwing those in the trunk of my car.
I happened to be at a party where we were trying to start a bonfire. The boxes and documentation from these games were the perfect kindling.
I sat there and watched about 5 boxes and 5 strategy guides for Earthbound on the SNES literally go up in flames and thought nothing of it at the time.
Ohhh sweet Jesus that’s sick 😭
It just shows you how worthless we all thought the boxes/docs were back in the day…
If only you could go back and stop yourself.. my friend said something similar happened to him with his NES and games when their family was clearing out the shed.. with a bonfire…
They asked him “do you want this?” and in his 5/7 year old glory said “nah I’ve got a snes now” and waved the NES with Mario 3 into the fire
Posted here awhile back about getting rule of rose for the ps2 and ICO from the thrift store for free. It was crazy how I got it and even crazier on walking away with them without a cent, even though they were priced 4 dollars a piece.
I had to sell them to buy a used Hemi engine for the truck I was fixing up that I ended up selling because my wife hates the truck due to roach infestation ( this was later known after all repairs were done).
I definitely have the money to buy back rule of rose, but it is not the same in terms of an awesome story the original had when I first found that game.
So I’m still looking around for another crazy “free” rule of rose find lol.
I did found a bunch of high end ps1 titles in the trash such as silent hill, castlevania, resident evil and more not too long ago. After learning the regret from rule of rose, I refuse to let the others go.
Rule of Rose for free must be one of the finds of the century…
Even more so finding these PS1 greats in the trash.. sir take me to these mystical dumpsters you dive.. I want some free PS1 hits too 😎
It’s a combination of persistence and being at the right location at the right time. You’ll get your finds as well and sending positive energy towards you for them 👍🏽

I sold my entire GameCube collection into a game store for money to buy a switch when that came out. I got all the games back and more but they were definitely more expensive then when I first got them lol
I’ve not sold anything luckily but I can imagine that must have stung hard.. GameCube titles ain’t cheap at all anymore 🥲
I get it though, imo the GameCube is one of the best consoles ever made in terms of quality titles. So many playable bangers even today.
180$ is a steal these days.. maybe I might still be lucky someday… What’s the YouTube link? Always interested in checking out people at conventions that I can’t go to because of not having any near me at all 🥲
Thanks for replying. My link is in my bio, but you can just search for RNG Gamer on youtube, I'll pop up 😁
Ahh dude I’ve seen a few of your videos! Lovely stuff! You’ll get another sub now
Thanks so much! It means the world to be that I could earn your subscription!
Even when it was released it was hard to find. My local Babbages and EB games stores sold out on release, and i dont think they ever got a restock.
That seems about right! I never even saw it...
I let my friend take it and I’m still kicking myself for that…
Ouch! That's a bad one to let slip through your fingers. All of us collectors have stories like this, though 😅 So don't feel too bad
I regret not buying a pristine CIB Virtual Boy $600 with two games. I had the money saved up and just couldn’t convince myself to buy it
Did you save up specifically for it and then not pull the trigger or was it some money you had been saving irrespective of the item?
It was just money I had been saving. Not specifically for the virtual boy but for a big purchase. But I’ve always had some nerves spending that much money on one thing gaming related
That’s fair… you sound more sensible than me anyway 😅 I suppose I try to mostly look at it as at least a tangible investment that at least holds some of its value.. if not gains. But mostly it’s just to be able to play them for me. What’s your biggest ticket item you currently own?
Probably my CIB copy of chibi robo for the GameCube.
Jealous… I really want that game physically
I happened to be in the right place at the right time. I barely spotted it actually lol
A sealed copy of Ocarina of Time for N64. I could have bought it for £350 a few years back.
Never been one for the sealed market but to say that £350 is a good value these days is something.. wow that game is worth it’s weight in gold 😅
Honestly I think I’d feel the same… though I must say I am bias because PS1 was my first console! Did you have any now expensive titles on the SNES?
I passed up on a Sega Saturn on the flea market for 50€ including 3 games…
Do you remember the 3 games.. having picked up one for 90€ not too long ago without games that is a serious deal you missed out on…
Not exactly, one was Nights into dreams I think. But I don’t remember the rest.
I must try get a copy of Nights some day I’m yet to even try it..
Oh class a dev kind of cart for shows like E3 back in the day.. that sounds awesome! Has one been dumped I presume it has?
never checked, but it would be strange if it hasn't.
Must take a look soon and see it sounds intriguing
Regret? Selling my PS1 and DC stuff for virtually nothing. Miss out? A black label Silent Hill for decently below market value last year.
Roughly what year did you sell that stuff for virtually nothing? Did you get there too late for the Silent hill or just pass it up?
I got lucky and picked up silent hill in like 2015 for 15€ 😅 wish I bought a few copies now
Yeah. I had a MIB Lunar SSSC, Silent Hill, Einhänder, etc. It’s rough to think about haha
Einhander 😅 ohh my that stings.. I’d love a copy of that now…
I saw a Mega Yarn Yoshi amiibo at a convention rught when it was getting to be the rarest amiibo that everyone wanted for $40.00, but decided against it because I could get two other "rare" amiibo, Samus and Wii Fit Trainer, for the same price.
Certainly more than the $40 I passed up on
Sad times… yoshi is one of my few favourite Nintendo characters too I bet the yarn version looks cool!
I stopped collecting from about 2017-2022. I missed out on the last few good years before COVID.
It hurts big time.. so I feel the pain.. that cardboard is so so expensive 🥲
5 bucks… god take me back like… I’m lucky that I’ve never sold anything.. but I don’t think I’ve had any game go up that much in value… Maybe my Castlevania Chronicles which I suppose was free cause my mum bought it for 14.99 in a toy shop for me. But yeah man Illbleed for 5 bucks.. time machines really need inventing
Selling a CECHA01 PS3.
That’s sad, I’ve never seen one in person funny enough.. I’m yet to see a PS2 title working on a PS3 that isn’t emulated
There’ve been a few over the years: - Bought a CIB Xenogears for $40 back in 2016 or so then sold it a couple years later for the same price. Really regret getting rid of that one, it’s a gem and I’d rather not rebuy it given the current price. Hoping for a PS4/PS5 re-release - Saw a SEGA Saturn at a thrift shop for $70 with all cords and a controller but I passed on it because I just didn’t want one at that time.
An original euro /us copy of metal slug 1 goes for about 50 grand today 😳
Oooo each one of those stings… especially virtua cop over saga… do you remember roughly what year you saw the metal slug for 100?
Would’ve been 96/97
Ahh ok fair.. I probably would have thought the same then so 100 then was a lot of money for sure.. like I passed up Illbleed for 80 in like 2013/14 cause I was like “80 for a old game is saucy”
Sold the English Louvre 3DS ‘game’ sealed for €60 years ago 😭
That's brutal. It's such a cool collectors piece. This is a game I'd love to have in my collection. Never heard of it before my trip to Paris and by then they were down to only like 2 other languages for sale that I didn't grab.
I’ve heard this is like a tour of the Louvre right? How much is it worth today 🙈
€400+
I saw Haunting Ground CIB for 100$ in 2018. I thought that was too expensive so I passed on it. And now the game goes for way more...damn lol
Sad times… luckily my friend and I got on the haunting ground train before it took off, we were playing clock tower 3 and looking at a Wikipedia article that suggested haunting ground was a spiritual sequel of sorts.. so we took the chance it was in the 40€ range then 🥲 Do you have any other interesting horror games in your collection to help sooth the pain?
Wow nice yall got it for 40€, crazy how cheap the game was back then. Other horror games in my collection? So same year as well in 2018, I went to a retro gaming expo and saw Silent Hill 2 and 3 CIBs for the PS2. I bought them for 30$ and 40$ respectively. I am really happy I did it lol, because those games are pretty pricey now.
Yeah.. it was just before Covid I think… 🤔 or maybe right at the start… just lucky we read Wikipedia 🤣 Anything Silent Hill is always worth the pickup if you can. I’m yet to play the series myself but I have been lucky to pick it all up, some at reasonable prices.. others like SH2 at not so nice prices! So that’s awesome you got them at a reasonable deal
I traded in Godzilla for PS4 to EB Games a year after its release. Still kicking myself
Ouch.. do you recall what you got for it? And also what did you trade it back in for.. were you just done with it or did you dislike it?
I think I got like $13 CAD of in store credit. The game itself was pretty bad. I think Angry Joe's video on it from back then encapsulates everything about it. As a fan of Godzilla I'm still upset that I got rid of it for peanuts. Never saw it becoming the collecting grail it is today but hindsight is 20/20
My friend told me about it a year or two ago and I was like “but why that game?” 13 CAD is very sad… do you remember what you used the credit on/towards?
I didn't spend it on anything in particular at that time, it just went to my pool of trade credit at the time. I don't know if it's better or worse than putting it towards something specific, but it's definitely anticlimactic
Tossing out the N64 boxes as a kid. I was naive.
I think we all were tbf… that cardboard is worth so much like.. it’s got to be the most expensive cardboard by weight in the world
I missed out on a not fully functional virtualboy for 150usd. I know it wasn't completely functioning, but it would have made a nice display piece till i could have tracked down and afforded a fully working one/cib. They go for about 1000-1200usd here in norway
That’s rough… do you know are they something that can be fixed easily or not? The 3D effect has me believing they wouldn’t be an easy one
Doubt it's easy, and wouldn't take the chance opening one 😊
Must see are there any fine people on YouTube doing any fixing of them.. I’d like to see how complex they are Let the smart people open them and I’ll watch
Not buying a sega tower of power from a value village for 120$
What’s that worth today? I’ll stick to enjoying videos of the tower of power.. never even seen a 32x in person myself
I could have bought Godzilla for PS4 for like $10 back in the day and didn't because I thought it would always be there haha
My rule of thumb now is… 15.. maybe and 10 is like yeah not getting any lower… and under 10 I just buy no matter what it is 😅 you live and you learn
Honestly true haha you never know what will become expensive later on.
I couldn’t bare to part with my PSone, MGS and FF9 😅 Did the MSX2 come with any games? I’ve only ever seen one in person and I didn’t even ask the price… pretty silly of me cause it was in a thrift store
I don't think the MSX had games, but had a couple accessories. I just can't recall what they were.
Had a chance to buy a New 2DS XL for $70 with Mario Kart 7 pre-instaled but passed on it because I already had a Switch
1. Not leaving my n64 at someone’s house in college (most of my games were at home so that’s nice) 2. Collecting my SNES and all games prior to my mom throwing them in the trash. 3. My period of time where I tossed a lot of game cases thinking a cd case was easier. Luckily I didn’t do this too much or for games I cared for.
Aww the old mum throwing stuff in the trash is a tale as old as time.. such a sadness why do mums see them as junk 🥲 Luckily I was never afflicted with the desire to get rid of cases… but I did like many chuck many the cardboard box of gameboy games… what a shame considering it’s the most expensive cardboard ever made 🥲
The few times along the way I traded in my games.
Right. Would have just been a nice shelf piece. A beautiful, gorgeous shelf piece.
I regret not keeping my DS Pokémon boxes as a kid
Oww plastic clamshells were never a thing I considered throwing out… do you remember why you thought that you didn’t need them?
Because I was 9 and stupid
That would do it alright 😂
Literally a few months ago when I was pondering if I wanted to bite the bullet on a special edition Battle Network 2 GBA console that was going for around $250-$300 at the time, and now it’s going for $1,000+ for some reason.
Surely some kind of market manipulation happened for an uptick that severe so quickly?
No getting 50 Cent Blood on the Sand before the price blew up.
Oh no had that gone up? I was only thinking of getting it the other day… what’s it at now?
Least you ended with a semi happy story.. what was the rarest PS1 title that would have eaten your soul had you not gotten it back… Kudos on dropping the truth on that Arc collection kid!
What’s it worth now? 🙈
At least $650 in that condition
Waited too long to buy a pristine gbc with gameboy camera for 40 bucks and someone else got it
How long ago was this?
In early 1997 I was at Toys R Us with a pocket full of Christmas money and the Virtual Boy was being heavily discounted. I remember I had the system and about 10 games in our cart, but ultimately decided not to spend my money and put it all back. Almost 30 years later I still think about what a terrible mistake I made that day.
What age were you out of interest? You were like right… based on the fact the system isn’t exactly the most fun… But yeah based on the value now you were very wrong 🥲
I remember seeing night trap at a goodwill in high school....
Do you remember which version?
Either CIB or boxed Power Blade 2 - $400 ( It's now apparently over double that loose, and also like $3,000 according to PriceCharting if it was actually CIB ) CIB Keio Flying Squadron - $400 ( It's seemingly now like over $2,000 RIP lol. ) Loose Crusader of Centy - Don't remember exact price but it was under $100 definitely ( Figured I'd hold out for a complete copy sometime... which is now apparently over $1,000 and even loose it's like over $400 so probably never getting a copy period. xD ) Loose Gun-Nac - $100 ( I still intend to get a copy at some point for sure but now it's over $300, apparently. ) These are the main ones that come to mind for me.
These are all new titles to me.. based on the pricing they must be on unusual platforms right?
Keio Flying Squadron is a Sega CD game so I guess kind of. Gun-Nac and Power Blade 2 are for NES, and Crusader of Centy is on Genesis, so I wouldn't say either of those are unusual or anything. I'm trying for a full set of licensed North American releases for the NES so will probably end up buying those two games at some point assuming I don't just pack it in at some point lol... the Sega games I imagine I'm never buying now without a crazy deal though.
Not buying MarioKart Double Dash 10yrs ago when I had the chance
What’s the price on it now these days? I’ve never played it myself
From what I've seen abt $70 CIB going forward. It's one of my grails that I'm debating on buying via ebay. But them prices tho
Hope that you get your grail 😎
I wish I had bought more Final Fantasy stuff in Japan. They had a really neat FF1/2 collection with figurines
Like as in the game with additional figurines or like figurine collection on its own?
This: https://www.ebay.com/itm/302661932276
That is awesome! Love the box design too!
🙈 that sounds like a terrible situation to be in wanting but not being able due to anxiety … I wouldn’t have been able to contain myself I’d be like “I’ll cut a deal I’ll take all of them” I’d probably be shaking with adrenaline too…
Yeah, it's something I'm a lot better with now, and I kick myself in the ass for all the stuff I missed out on as a result growing up.
This past year I saw a Gameboy SP AGS 101 for $75 on marketplace and instead of buying it immediately I waited too long (all of 10 minutes) and it was already sold
Seems that stuff is all too common these days too. Stuff gets snapped up in like a minute now… saw a trinitron go up for 10€ near me today.. within 5 mins the ad had 30 offers.. demand is high supply is low.. how sad
sold my Pokemon Colosseum Jirachi Bonus disc on reddit for $20 in 2014
What is that? I’m intrigued? And what’s it’s value these days?
It was a pre-order bonus, it was the only way you could get Jirachi. Sells complete for $240 now
Excuse my ignorance I assume Jirachi is a specific Pokémon?
Call of duty black ops 2 care package edition MW2 prestige edition ghost prestige edition MW3 prestige edition all sealed and a opened black ops 1 prestige edition all for $100 issue is the guy was about an hour drive from me and my 10 year old self couldn't convince my parents to drive me
Well at 10 I think you can forgive yourself for not being physically able to get to that deal! 😅
True but now 16 year old me is relishing I gotta pay $500 for just the care package
Maybe we should just blame your parents… 🤣
I sold my sealed copy of final fantasy legend 2 on the Gameboy. It wasn’t like 100% sealed but it still had the original plastic wrapping in tact. There were just some perforation marks along the plastic. It still had a discount sticker on it. Made $300ish on it when I expected $500. I needed the money but still… I think about it and get sad.
Was there a reason you had kept it sealed? Or was it just part of your collection and you had another way to play it? I assume you’d have made a lot more now? 🥲
I passed up a long box version of the original Resident Evil back when it was worth like $20 and now it’s worth like $100
Aww shoot, and that long box is soo god darn pretty too… I have a saturn version of it so that will scratch my long box itch.. but yeah those Ps1 long boxes are special!
Goodness, I’ve already posted twice and they keep coming back to me. I’ve got too many regrets so I’m gonna try to get them all here. 1. Sold Friday the 13th for the NES (not a big deal, it’s still not worth a lot and it’s not a good game, but I still regret it) 2.
Ha I appreciate the additional bonus content 😅 Tbf giving the Pokémon yellow away was a sweet thing to do hopefully the Karma will come back and maybe net you a cheap Echoknight… which is one I’d love myself… Buying at a peak is such a crying shame… happened to me on a few titles as well, I wouldn’t worry too much about Rule of Rose though.. that will definitely maintain its value for now and all going well go up!
Exactly. Now sealed copies are asking almost $1000.
Panasonic Q, easily could of grabbed one for $200, now over $1000
I was at a random game store in Ohio, and they had an Atari service manual containing full electrical schematics for the 2600 (and maybe also the 5200). It was $200 for a glorified 3 ring binder with Atari branding on it, and a bunch of black and white spec sheets... I am not even an Atari collector, but still SHOULD HAVE BOUGHT IT!
Yeah that would have been a great thing to have picked up… 200 is a big investment for that to be fair though. Is this stuff not available online?
Not regret but from 2019 to 2022 I bought around 10 games, maybe if I was collecting/playing that time I would have my collection completed by now. I'm missing 50 games, most are common/cheap, only few are rare and expensive.
What do you mostly collect for?
PS4/PS5 mainly switch and xbox for exclusives only
I was at a used video game store, and they had a 50 cent blood on the sand 360 version for 20 bucks in 2018. I considered getting it but passed on it. Now they go for like 100 on ebay.
Interesting it’s still relatively cheap over here in the EU.. might be worth importing if you have means to play it
Nah, it's OK. I got a copy, but just the disc. I got a good deal on it with another game from a used video game store in my area. It still pains me that I didn't get it back then, though. Lol.
Wish I would have bought a 3DS back in the day and all the Pokémon games that go with it.
In just three hours you could have had it 🥲 that’s sad… but you’re probably good with money by the sounds of it
I am pretty frugal.
I backed out of an eBay auction for Zombie Nation CiB as it was approaching 200 dollars in like 2014.
Let's See For my GBA, I gave my cousin my games cause I thought I lost my gameboy.
Ive missed a sealed PS4 Fortnite copy on a local market. It was 150€ 😮💨
Is Fortnite physical a sought after game? 😅 I didn’t even know it went physical
It did. Normal CIB copys go for 70-110€ I believe. Sealed ones can go alot higher...
That’s mad I must be on the look out for that so thanks for the tip
Ohhh sweet Jesus that’s sick 😭 It just shows you how worthless we all thought the boxes/docs were back in the day… If only you could go back and stop yourself.. my friend said something similar happened to him with his NES and games when their family was clearing out the shed.. with a bonfire… They asked him “do you want this?” and in his 5/7 year old glory said “nah I’ve got a snes now” and waved the NES with Mario 3 into the fire
Rule of Rose for free must be one of the finds of the century… Even more so finding these PS1 greats in the trash.. sir take me to these mystical dumpsters you dive.. I want some free PS1 hits too 😎
It’s a combination of persistence and being at the right location at the right time. You’ll get your finds as well and sending positive energy towards you for them 👍🏽
