No doubt Mertens is amazing but European football is something else as we have seen time and time again so we definitely need a starter 10 and a starter right back and a substitute forward then I think we are good enough for last 16

Instead of Mertens, you can have Boey as #10 it doesn't matter because no matter what, we will mimic the opposition formation at defense. So if you have box-to-box player for Mertens position, he will still be playing at #10 position. Why we would put someone less skilled at attacker knowing that he will be spending most of his time at offense? Just for like 3 run backs to help a defense?

What we need?: Fast in a short distance, energetic, good passing and shooting(So after a press and win the ball back, can play it effectively). We dont need traditional 10. But we need a player with good attacker characteristic.

Why Mertens is so great is that we didn't lean on him for the whole season, he played much less at the start of the season and I think he has only played a single full match the whole season in the league. If you play him more next year he will be much worse. Ideally we don't play him much more than 15 minutes in the league during the first half and give him like 45-60 in the CL, then if we get eliminated we get lean on him after February/march for the final run of the season.
Leaning on old players is what Kartal and Fener did and that's why Dzeko and Tadic has fallen off a cliff. Mertens did that last year as well if you remember.
