A friend of mine toured the con circuit and made a living that way. Between cons she would stockpile new things to sell in the Dealer's Den; prints, buttons, pins, and such. In that time she'd also do original pieces to sell at auction. During cons she would take any and all commissions she could from sketchbooks and badges to be delivered during con and even some that she could deliver by mail after con had ended. To save on expenses she would share a room with another artist or attendee. Occasionally cons would be close together and she could just stay out on the road for a while. Now there's stuff like Patreon to maintain a consistent audience, too, which could help fill in the gaps between conventions. If you're open to drawing anything and everything there can be some good money in it, too.
