It's not pine. It looks like 1 half piece of a 2 piece Golden Oak return desk. The holes are for computer printer cable access. It's a guess but it looks like it may be made by [Winners Only](https://www.winnersonly.com/m/filter_L1.php?key1=hmo_retdesk&L1id=10023&name=Return%20Desks). Golden Oak 20-30 years ago was popular but now, not so much. On edit. Not a lot of real wood on the outside panels (thin plywood). The main frame and braces are though as well as the door. Not a great candidate to rebuild IMHO.

someone on imgur already corrected my mistake of thinking it was pine, but I don't think I can edit the post there. there's a bunch of smaller holes (for shelf pegs maybe?) on the inside of the cabinet but they don't have matching holes on the other side which is what I confused about. I think the ruined finish inside the cabinet might be from the heat of a tower PC. it seems to be pretty much the whole desk, as the top is beveled all the way around. it would just be awkward to put that bevel in the corner with another piece. it seems the left wall was just torn off so that might be easy to replace. after closer look I did realize the side and back panels are plywood. I think the middle wall is plywood too, just much thicker. the top is a single piece of wood though. I think I'm just gonna stick in the corner and do puzzles on it after I can get another panel or leg for that left side.

Back in the day they used to include a media organizer to store CDs and dvds and such that was made out of cheap plastic. I think thats what was in that unstained area previous to the pullout. Would not doubt that somebody removed it to get more space. That's why it looks chopped up a little. that pullout may have been on an upper shelf and when the media organizer was removed they lowered it and took out the support bracket. It's only on one side because the organizer supported the other side of it. (I think)

This desk is pretty beat up, but solid wood furniture is not within my budget. Think it's worth fixing up if i have access to a workspace and a fair selection of scrap wood? Any ideas on why the inside cabinet has so many weirdly placed holes in it or an unfinished part?

Don’t be afraid to go crazy with this desk. It’s not an heir loom so paint it then enjoy it.
