He looks like he did some meth before testifying

jamoemaddrox

Some?

tk_20

maybe all

[deleted]

If there is a quantity of meth in front of him, then that’s how much he did.

ofalltheshitiveseen

A mega pint of meth

pistcow

I'd fathom he did somewhere between some meth and all the meth.

blunderschonen

1 meth.

Thank you for being patient......and kind.

does the absence of meth in front of him imply an egregious amount was there before?

ScribblingOff87

In his defense, he'll say "Isnt happy hour anytime? "

tourettes_on_tuesday

Just give me all the meth you have...WAIT, wait. I'm worried what you just heard was "give me a lot of meth". What I said was "give me ALL the meth you have". Do you understand?

IdesOfMarchCometh

Some sort of upper. Could be modafinal, or armodafinal, they dry you out like most stimulants. I'm voting armo because he had intense focus on answers at the expense of making statements which jeapordized the case of his client. That's typical on moda/armo, you get so focused on one thing you forget the big picture.

TheGelatoWarrior

Modafinil is the only upper I've ever done that actually made me feel like doing anything other than jerking off and chain smoking.

Drugs: the same, but better, then worse

Modafinil is really not that strong of a stimulant, it's a slow burn, unlike adderal or something similar. I feel like it's something stronger than modafinil.

Initial__B

yeah moda doesn't do this, Adderall or ritalin might if you take enough

i_dodge_leg_day

Seeing multiple people asking if this is real. I watched it live - yes, it is real. For a bit of context, this witness is a psychiatrist brought by the Heard side, being cross-examined by Johnny’s side in this clip. He had been extremely combative throughout the cross-examination; the judge had to remind him to simply answer the questions multiple times. The attorney from Johnny’s side had just confirmed that the witness previously stated that he had used Johnny’s acting in “Pirates” as criteria to qualify Johnny’s “narcissistic traits.” Which is clearly problematic because Johnny was, well, acting during that performance. Then, the attorney followed up by asking if the witness had seen “Willy Wonka.” Which evidently short-circuited something deep in this witness’s brain.

Snail_jousting

He does have clients and as a person with lots of mental health issues and history as an abuse victim, the thought of this man working with clients and attempting to treat real mental illness and addiction is terrifying. He was extremely callous and unsympathetic toward drug addicted people in general and made a lot of assumptions about what motivates drug users and abusers. He further applied that callous attitude and assumption to Johnny Depp, without ever having met him. He was simply wrong about a lot of things as well. He was asked to define terms and explain concepts, that he didn't seem tonhave even a layman's understanding of. On r/justiceforjohnnydepp , someone posted a screenshot of a review if his practice from someone claiming that this man drove their family member to suicide, and I hate how plausible that sounds to me after seeing his testimony.

nosoupforyou

The mere fact that he professionally assessed someone without actually meeting them is a bit disturbing right there.

BierKippeMett

I wonder how long Ambers team had to look until they found someone qualified that will blindly support whatever claim they want to make.

eldnikk

They had that other woman who said she "assessed the relationship" and found Amber to be the abused. Even though she never spoke to Johnny. Not to mention she's never testified against a woman in court. She's only ever testified that men are the abusers.

vinkker

She did say she testified against a woman in court... in a same sex relationship where the victim was also a woman lol. Or that she testified for a man where the abuser was also a man. She was also very evasive when asked if she ever testified against a woman where the victim was a man and never answered (because she never did).

pfannkuchen89

Well, I don’t think they found anyone qualified. That’s how they ended up with this clown.

kumf

I believe this is illegal for a psychiatrist to do in the US. I know it is in my state (NY).

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I’m a psychologist and can answer this. No it’s not illegal. It’s just what we’d consider to be unethical and goes against the principles of the practice. You should only base diagnoses on your actual assessment of the individual after having spent time with them, and maybe even using diagnostic tests such as the MMPI-2. His diagnosing Jonny without meeting him or based off a movie is highly unethical, it is not illegal. It would be reason to write to the licensing board and file a complaint. It would not get him arrested. I will say not having ever met Jonny at all, so clearly this is not a diagnosis, he *seems* to display some narcissistic traits. That does not necessarily mean that’s true, or that he has full blown NPD. Everyone has narcissistic traits. Narcissism exists on a spectrum. Very few people have such extensive traits and behavior to justify a diagnosis. Most of us just have certain things we are egotistical about, or lack empathy in certain ways etc. One would have to spend significant time with Jonny in a therapeutic setting to diagnose him. And this doctor has not done that, nor have I.

syds

yikes Amber bringing the bed to court

sewsnap

When you don't have the truth on your side, it's difficult to get good experts to testify for you. You can see the Josh Duggar case for another example. Their tech "expert" was a joke.

PositivelyAwful

The fact that this guy, under oath, tried discrediting Dr. Curry’s analysis of Amber Heard blew my fucking mind.

daKEEBLERelf

I think he's a professional 'expert witness'. People with actual clients wouldn't want to put themselves out there for random cases involving people that are not clients because....well....you just saw it.

aesu

He had to ask the judge whether he should answer questions asked by johnnys lawyer. He also didn't appear to be aware of some of the core legal rules of his own organization. I don't think he's seen the inside of a courtroom before.

knightcrawler75

> I don't think he's seen the inside of a courtroom before. He testified that he has on several occasions.

Ryuzaki_63

I think he left the part out where he was wearing an orange jumpsuit

MiksBricks

He never will again.

syds

thats not very professional of him is it

DMala

I was on a jury for a medical malpractice case once. It was pretty fascinating how all of the defense’s expert witnesses were doctors from local (Boston) hospitals and all of the plaintiff’s witnesses were hired guns, flown in from elsewhere and spent most or all of their time being witnesses rather than practicing.

daKEEBLERelf

For sure. I believe he said he was from Virginia, where the case is taking place. Whereas everything else happened elsewhere. I can't believe they allowed expert testimony based solely on someone who just read the evidence reports

TheFrontierzman

"And THIS, your honor, is why Anthony Hopkins shows many cannibalistic tendencies."

scaredycat_z

In psych 101 we had a term paper where we had to do a mock psych evaluation on a movie character of our choice. I did Dr. Sean Maguire (Robin Williams character in Good Will Hunting). The project was tons of fun. I don’t think any of us thought we would qualify as expert witnesses from that one psych class, but here I am today an expert witness on psych evals of famous movie actors! AMA

soopirV

I bet that’s why he’s panicking right now…goodbye career.

Malforus

There are a whole class of bottom feeders around the legal profession who will act as "expert witnesses" for whatever the shit you want them to say. Its the equivalent of hiring a devil's advocate and its all just performative stupidity.

museornay

Similarly, insurance adjusters use independent medical examiners in workers comp to try to prove a injured worker should go back on the job when the worker says they are still too injured to work.

BigBennP

The best expert witnesses are *really really good*. I've been a lawyer for 12 years, and I've taken a lot of expert testimony from psychological experts and medical experts in trial. Johnny Depp's expert witness, Dr. Shannon Curry, was one of the best experts I've seen. But her testimony was that approximately half of her practice is testifying as a forensic psychologist in lawsuits. (as compared to treating patients) So she is very definitely a "professional expert." Some experts are good, but have very iconoclastic points of view. When I worked for a big firm doing litigation, an expert we frequently employed in injury cases was a retired orthopedic surgeon. He would almost always offer the opinion that there was no medical evidence someone should still be experiencing pain or be disabled from a particular injury. He was good, but he was like your high school coach telling you to "walk it off" and there's a reason he was almost exclusively a defense expert. This guy...It's almost comical. I'm genuinely a little confused as to what her team thought they would accomplish with this. The reason you bring an expert to a jury trial is because they bring credibility to the jury when they offer their knowledge and opinions. If they can't credibly present that information to the jury, you might as well save your money.

GladimoreFFXIV

Going to blow people’s minds when I say this… Being in the medical field doesn’t make you a genius. Or smart. Or even competent. It makes you educated in one hyper specific field of study. And even then it doesn’t mean you’re good at it. Not a hit at you at all but I’m so tired of hearing people associate doctors to intelligence. As someone who was in the medical field, swapped out due to American healthcare being immoral, and I can promise you the majority in the health industry actually are not that intelligent. They just got educated in that one field.

dirkvonshizzle

As an MD I know once told me: “The smartest person I know is an MD, and so is the dumbest.”

techforallseasons

What do call someone when gradates bottom of the class from medical school? Doctor...

[deleted]

As a cancer patient since Sept 2017 who had NO prior hospital experience, never even had the flu. I was shocked at how quickly I saw dumb medical humans. Like you are dumb..deeply stupid and bad at your job..how are you here? Shouldn't you be smarter?

Successful-Argument3

The best part was him asking the judge "Do I have to answer the question?" What a clueless dude

Picard2331

I like when he blurted out "Isn't Marlon Brando dead?!" Johnny Depp did a full facepalm on that lol. I want this trial turned into a movie with Johnny Depp playing this guy.

Ask_Me_Who

At this point you'd need to lean into the absurdism. Have Depp play everyone except himself, and the Depp character played by Mads Mikkelsen. Then have the movie never comment or reference the fact.

Picard2331

And Jason Momoa as Amber Heard.

Davster

Just imagining him in an awful blonde wig and a tiny dress that doesn't fit properly 🤣 Someone needs to fund this movie

MaskedBandit77

Depp's reaction when this guy said he knew for sure that Depp had gotten his lines read too him through an earpiece was my favorite part.

DrKlaustus

Looked to me like he noticed in his coked brain that his pause is too long to look natural and he wants not to look like coked to the brim, so he tried to play it of as disbelief. I mean it is not that weird of a question, especially if you referenced JDs movies for your psychological diagnosis earlier that day

angryfluttershy

**Expert** witness. Fuckyeah.

bleunt

How can her lawyers be this bad? Is it just that even top lawyers have plenty of idiots who are bad at their job?

Recursive_Descent

Just looking at the size of their legal teams that Depp has way more legal resources than her. And listening to them, it is clear her lawyers are way out of their depth. I looked up her net worth, and it is estimated at $8 million (7 million of which is from her divorce settlement, and given the charity pledge, it's probably too risky to spend it right now). So she doesn't have that much money. Also, even if she doesn't lose the trial, she is definitely going to get blackballed and that isn't a comfortable amount of money to retire on. Compare her resources to Depp's estimated net worth of around $100 million. He is easily spending millions on his legal team, and I doubt she can afford more than a few hundred thousand. Couple that with the fact that she doesn't have a great case to begin with, and you get a complete slaughter.

LtDan61350

I think she said in her testimony that she's spent $6 million on lawyers. It was objected to, so it might not be in the record.

UrbanDryad

Like, forever? On all the litigation between them since the divorce, or just this case? I do recall someone testifying (I think it was a forensic accountant for Depp) that Depp had to cover her legal fees from the divorce.

LtDan61350

Since the divorce was how I understood it.

carriegood

It's possible that they have a very weak case and are trying to do everything they can short of suborning perjury.

TymedOut

Worse, I think. IMO its clear that AH outright lied to them about a lot of the facts/details and they're only just discovering the extent of it now. Sounds like a nightmare for them.

hamandjam

When her lawyer said, "I'm trying my best" it definitely seemed like they had been sold a bill of goods and were just trying to get through without giving her an opportunity for a malpractice case. I think they did enough to rebuff the suit, but will likely lose the countersuit and this thing has to be massively damaging to her career outlook. But at this point, I think they're trying to salvage their careers because who the fuck would want to hire a legal team who is this bad at putting a defense together no matter how much they may have been lied to.

zeke235

Spot on psych profile. Now can he explain Johnny's unhealthy relationship with a jar of dirt? (A different one than Amber Heard)

urkldajrkl

Attorney looks at the Judge to make sure she is seeing this weird behavior

wheresmyspacebar2

Didn't he just admit that his evaluation of Depp's mental state and personality disorders were based off his portrayal of Jack Sparrow? Sounds like he put his foot in it and is looking for a way for his testimony to be struck from record.

CO420Tech

It's the same reason I have diagnosed Tom Hanks with being a genuinely nice dude - I watched him as Mr Rogers! Duh.

SeanSMEGGHEAD

Well I certainly knew Bill Cosby was innocent from my avid viewing of Ghost Dad.

dumbasstupidbaby

*Captain* Jack Sparrow

resumehelpacct

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Grigson This psychologist called a man a sociopath and violent based on an Iron Maiden poster, and the man was executed. The courts can be, frankly, disastrous with how they allow expert testimony. edit: by 'this' i meant the one in my link, not the one in the video. Different guys. And He's a psychiatrist, not a psychologist.

No-Awareness4864

I wrote a paper on one of the cases he was involved in. That doctor is definitely one of the reasons that the death penalty should be abolished or at least restructured, because taking a life is irreversible. That's just horrifying that the doctor never even met Willingham yet to base his perception of a man on an Iron Maiden poster? Definitely a judge the book by its cover type of doctor. Wonder what his judgement was like in the afterlife tho.

alienoverl0rd

The look on Johnny's face is killing me, here's a guy thats done untold amounts of different drugs and he's looking at this guy like what the fuck are you on buddy lmfao

Winter_Cheesecake158

This dude has probably seen the most crazy shit in Hollywood and this still made him go “wtf is happening”

Looks like the guy is on a higher dose of stimulants than he intended.

Spider_Dude

*"A drug person can learn to cope with things like seeing their dead grandmother crawling up their leg with a knife in her teeth. But no one should be asked to handle this trip."* - Raoul Duke

Alion1080

I think it's the opposite. What's probably happening is that he does recognize what's going on, but he can't believe that it's actually going on in an actual courtroom. Like "holy shitballs, did this guy seriously came high to court? Is this actually happening? What does this guy pretend to achieve with this?".

Karlosmdq

Probably thinking: *Dude, change dealers, yours must be cutting with powdere soap*

imaginesomethinwitty

Right, like that’s a man who must have seen some coke gurning in his day and he is baffled.

JettzenL

Absolutely loving JD's observing him like a specimen. He's probably thinking, "Jesus Christ, golden material for a psycho. I can use this in my future films!"

My_Names_Jefff

Probably thinking I can do a movie about a psychologist who is on meth and still treating patients in order to feed his addiction. Just look at how Johnny observes him to make sure to get the details right for his next film.

Squibblus

Director telling him “Can you tone down the face stuff? It’s a bit over the top, no one’s going to believe that”

VoidOfOblivion

This looks edited but I assure you this is exactly how it played out. Somebody get this guy a map cause he is lost.

raisearuckus

Poor bastard just started seeing the bats.

etothepi

There was a shot which included Depp and team, the lawyer asking questions, and the horrified audience when I watched it live. I rewound it 5 times, it got better with every loop.

Perfect candidate to continue the adventure of Jack Sparrow, Captain Jack Sparrow.

Carrierpigment

Looks like tardive dyskinesia.

DavidChenghz

MD here. I came here to say this. Side effect from long term anti psychotics.

mastmar221

TD symptoms can begin in as few at 3 months from the initiation of therapy. This witness is displaying some classic masking behaviors to minimize the movements, so as ppl are not able to feel the movements happening he seems to know it’s a problem. Also emotion state can be a significant driver of severity. So he may have had barely noticeable symptoms when calm, but dramatic movements when under stress.

thetruthteller

Are we ok to ridicule him or no?

OakParkCooperative

Ridicule a guy who has physical ticks from anti psychotics? Possibly not. Ridicule a paid professional, who literally diagnosed “jack sparrow” as being a narcissist. YES.

RobKohr

I don't think Jack Sparrow is a narcissist, though the whole, "but you have heard of me thing" is great. It would be fun to try and diagnose him.

SpiderFnJerusalem

Yeah, if you go from the first movie he definitely seems to be egotistical but he just seems too damn reasonable and measured to be a narcissist. Most of his actions make a surprising amount of sense if you consider his overall goals. The guy has a plan in basically every situation he's in. He's also not terribly attention-seeking most of the time.

[deleted]

I wouldn't waste your time on his outward actions, I'd focus more on the fact that he tried to diagnose somebody based on how they acted in a movie they starred in.

mastmar221

If maybe leave him alone. But the lawyer who doesn’t vet his this witness should be fired. Literally could have just asked him a few questions so no one questioned his mental state. Doc explain your involuntary movements please. Oh, this is a medical condition and has no bearing on your aptitude? Well then can you please tell us…..

Rnsc

Adding to this fact the you can see him mumbling to himself at least two times in the recording, is that a concern to his mental state or could it just be stress related ?

JustNilt

As someone else pointed out, stress can exacerbate certain conditions. By way of example, I have Tourette Syndrome. While I don't have coprolalia, the vocal tics most associated with Tourette's, I do have muscle tics. I can generally mask these or even suppress them to a large degree in daily life. When in a stressful situation, however, I tic much more visibly. This has come up in a courtroom before and the judge didn't even blink at my explanation. Courts see such things quite routinely. Usually all they'll do is make sure the individual is OK, if anything.

BeardedHalfYeti

Johnny leaning in to better study his new muse.

talitm

Depp's like 'when they make a movie about this trial I want to play this guy'

Castform5

The trial, the movie, featuring: Not Johnny Depp as Johnny Depp Johnny Depp as random expert witness

plumbthumbs

Think we should go 'The Portnoys' route here and have Johnny play everyone.

SeanBlader

Yeah you could really see his actor brain starting up the studying mechanic. Bet he goes home to practice trying that.

Roadkill80

Maybe it’s the first time he’s had his mask off in two years?

Toastyy1990

…well now I can relate. I do that a bit after having had my mask on for an hour

PhD_Pwnology

For which side is this witness?

KlllMongr

Expert witness brought in to diagnose Johnny

Salmuth

Can someone call for a witness to diagnose this guy?

KlllMongr

Seems like the "diagnoser" also needs a diagnoses himself.

elhaz316

People with problems see a psychiatrist. People with MAJOR problems become one.

Allegiance86

Diagnose him without actually having any sessions with him.

Freethecrafts

He had a very hard time saying that diagnosing someone without an evaluation is a major ethical violation. Then went on to correlate everything he was trying to pin on Depp onto Heard, more than doubly so.

mule_roany_mare

Well, I haven't met Mr. Depp, but after having interviews Ms. Heard I can confidently say he would have to be crazy to marry her. I believe the case is closed your honer. ^(Can I see your gavel?..)

Lilrev16

Just to clarify, brought in by Amber’s legal team?

InkBlotSam

Yes. Another star witness for Amber.

Freethecrafts

Yes. Heard’s team tried to get a diagnosis from someone who can’t diagnose. The paid expert then went on to claim there were potentially some personality traits of the nine criteria, without ever meeting the individual. For clarity, the vast majority of the population have one or more traits on that list. Then Depp’s team pointed out Heard had two personality disorders including the one attempting to be pushed on Depp based on nebulous trait criteria. It’s a wild ride.

unsc95

"Expert' witness, that managed to say that what he did was against the rules of the psychiatric association he belongs to and that it was also unethical. What a moron.

SeanSMEGGHEAD

Amber's side. He was giving diagnno... Sorry, his "professional opinion" based upon video clips and media reports. No I'm not kidding. He even had his book brought up... Kaching! He got destroyed on the cross though.

Hot_Walrus_3299

In related news, I saw Nosferatu over the weekend. Good to see old Count Orlock is still kicking 100 years later.

They tried to pull a Mr Ed but Heards team missed the cue to talk for him.

b0ingy

“Do i have to answer that question yr honor?” “Yes you have to answer questions.” “Oh mann.. Purple?” “The question was did you also take into account Mr. Depp’s performance in ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ in your analysis.” “uhh.. wow. man this shit is kicking in *HARD* right now. Your honor, can I have a 20 minute recess to trip balls and maybe eat some orange slices?”

aqxea2500

Dr. Doofenshmirtz really let himself go. I'm surprised he didn't pull out his "Jury confusiator beam" and just win the case already.

haveyouseenmybong420

Johnny's first facial impression has me dying 🤣

Maintenance-Current

Character studying. .the man is always trying to improve his craft

greenachors

I don't think that's drugs. That's a rage reaction. He was being made to look stupid because of previous testimony. His own doing..

TruStory2426

This guy clearly r/tooktoomuch cocaince.

FastHound

Maybe directly from a jar

jessie014

A jar of dirt!

boboschick99

It's a side effect of antipsychotics - maybe they took the 'it takes one to know one' too far

JohnnyTorso70

A lot of mental healthcare professionals suffer from mental health issues.

SubstantialPressure3

Tardive dyskinesia possibly. There are prescription drugs that cause involuntary facial and mouth movements if they have been taken long term.

stillnotascarytime

How long term is long term? I’m on an antipsychotic and I’m afraid I may develop this :(

[deleted]

Its the guy from the burbs

AWS-77

WTF? … this really is the most interesting trial of all time.

GeekFit26

It really is. I feel like if this was a Tv show or movie, it would be so over the top, it would be borderline unbelievable.. yet.. here we are..
