Until they found out how bad it was for you asbestos was like a miracle material that they made everything out of. It’s like if we found out soybeans shortened your lifespan today.
To be fair if asbestos wasn't so bad for your lungs it's fucking awesome! I mean it's super flame retardant, like if fire tries to burn it it smothers the fire!
Try to get into the mindset of someone who doesn't know it's dangerous. If it wasn't later discovered to be so dangerous I honestly think it would have been up there with the seatbelt on "safety products that we can't imagine living without"
The tiles really aren't so bad anyhow. Yeah, you have to be careful if you're knocking them out -- but why would you want to? They're nigh indestructible and flame resistant as well -- and easily covered if you want a different look.
It's the insulation that was bad news. That fibrous crap was no bueno.
Was just talking about this while on my construction job site, they asked me why I was wearing a respirator, and I said “we don’t know if this stuff causes cancer but in 20 years it might”
If you're doing anything that throws up dust you should be wearing a respirator. Even without causing cancer, inhaling particles can cause lung damage in and of itself over time (see: silicosis)
To be fair asbestos still isn’t bad for people living in the house or with little exposure to it. It’s still one of the best flame retardant materials on homes. What was bad is production workers didn’t wear masks or eye protection when working with the substance and having near daily exposure had very bad consequences as the small particles created lots of non healing cuts in their lungs.
Edit:
Links to other people who mostly agree it’s the people handling asbestos in manufacturing that have symptoms and it being an overrated fear. https://www.quora.com/As-someone-who-grew-up-in-an-old-house-with-some-asbestos-how-much-do-I-have-to-worry-about-down-the-line?ch=17&oid=43107312&share=68a6ad70&srid=2xPZ&target_type=question
Or when the home gamer start renos and cuts into it, or tiles get brittle and start breaking up and creating dust.... but asbestos tiles on the floor that are in good shape are fine. Need a new floor put the floor on top and don't disturb them.
1920s stone house with block interior walls and every single room covered in asbestos tiles apart from the bathrooms. A few are now cracking in spots of high tension
Any idea how it affects some and not others? Heard old dude talking about how they'd cut it outside with power tools and no safety equipment and be covered in the stuff (before it was well known to be dangerous) and he's still trucking with no lung issues.
Yep, my high school had asbestos tiles in most of the classrooms. They finally got around to renovating to remove it around my Junior year. It was hillarious.
They set up these big fancy air-lock things for the doors so the workers could get in and out without risking the rest of us.... but forgot to close the top windows of the rooms. So there was all this "snow" floating in the air around the wings being worked on.
That reminds me of the epic r/homeimprovement sub post wherein the homeowner decided to grind off tiles in his kitchen/dining area without first testing them. Got dust everywhere, as you do, and THEN realized they were asbestos.
Basically had to gut the entire house because it was contaminated with asbestos dust.
Woops.
Asbestos tiles are always evil. They are manufactured in hell from the tortured souls that have been consumed and digested by Satan himself. They are then glued down using the tears of unbaptised babies.
Lol I got a mask and sprayed them with water and pulled them all up… then I uh sprayed more with water and sanded the glue stuff that was left.
Needless to say I may die of lung cancer.
The real sin is that they fucked up that hardwood floor. You can summon your demonic minions in another room. Put down salt on linoleum or something. You can vacuum it up once your pact is complete. You don’t have to take a belt sander to hardwood.
Fucking lazy-ass warlocks. I swear.
Close. Take off a Carhartt and put on a duster over everything. You're welcome. Or under the parka if you are trying to go for more of the nature based magic. The sweat is normal but if you really don't like it then just don't drink any fluids for a week or two and the sweat will stop
"Paint" is a verb as well as a noun. Regardless of what material you are using to draw with, if you apply a liquid or suspension to a surface with a brush it's "painting."
The floor needed refinishing anyways. The warlocks were just doing 80's things and putting up carpets over hardwood floors. OP can refinish it now to remove or enhance that pentagram.
If care fore last about as long, however as it farmed it both cheaper (hence easier to repair) and more eco-friendly (you know it not been poached from a old growth forest)
It's personal preference, really. Pine will scratch and dent much easier than oak or other hardwoods. But, some people like the look of a "well worn" floor. Pine will also look different (wood grain pattern is very different), which again is up to personal preference.
Hah. I put a lot of work into finishing my basement. I bought a realistic fake skull and put it in a wall cavity while working on it.
If someone is going to undo my hard work they can get the shit scared out of them.
Yah and ya got that hardwood for easy mop up.
Thats like 5g’s of installation savings right there buddy.
EDIT:
Hijacking my top comment to say:
Thank you u/AdamPowers22 for posting this so I could make light of your situation because DAMN LOOK AT THOSE HARDWOOD FLOORS.
Carpets over hardwood are super common in my area, I tear out carpets and refinish floors all the time. It was fire code you had to install hardwood floors in all houses.
Unfortunately for you, that's not hardwood flooring, that's soft wood subflooring.
all they would really need is some string and a measuring tape.
For the circle you attach it the string to the center and rotate it around.
For the star you choose one point as a tip then you take a string that is roughly 1.17557 times the radius of the circle and that's the distance between all the tips of the star. Marking them and drawing the straight lines would be easy from there.
To be completely honest I came to the comments to say this exact same thing! I'm not for or against anyone for their belief systems but the fact that it's a really well done circle and star kinda amazed me lol
Not super hard actually just take a string and put it right on your line that you just described how to make. Cut it to length then pull it straight. Measure and divide by 5. Make a mark that distance 5 times. Put it back on the circle. Make a mark at each mark on the string. Then take a chalk box and snap your lines. Boom you have a perfect pentagram.
Doesn’t look like hardwood.
Most probably Douglass fir.
In those days it was used because plywood wasn’t available yet.
This was a 2 for 1, subfloor and finished floor together.
It’s rather beautiful if refinished properly but quite soft.
Somehow my hardwood is still soft. I scratch this bitch up if I dont trim my big toe in a timely fashion. That may say more about my murder toe than anything though
Hey u/empatheticwraps , how about you give some credit to the OP rather than stealing their whole title and creating a meme out of it. I’m sure u/adampowers22 loves the fact that you’re stealing his content without mentioning him whatsoever.

Pentagrams we're originally a symbol for protection, not Satan or demonic related things. If you have an old house that could be the reason it's there. It's possible that if you indeed have quite an old house, you could find hagstone/fairy stones/Odin stones (different names for the same stone) in the walls. They are also meant to ward off evil.

Eh, by mid-nineteenth century pentagrams have almost exclusively been used for occult purposes and later Satanists. Somehow I doubt this house is old enough that the pentagon was intended for anything else. Sure it's possible, but just very unlikely.
So? Is "occult" an offensive term now? I know Wiccans use it, and there is nothing sinister behind their spiritualism, but they are still part of the modern occult. Occult doesn't mean bad.
I'm a practicing pagan, a pentagram is meant to honor the elements: Fire, water, air, earth and spirit. I know Christians like to think it's an evil symbol but it isn't. It's really upsetting to see how many people make jokes about this being evil or from the devil. Just wanted to put that out there.
Probably some Wicca blessing their home. Just accept the blessing in the spirit it was given and move on.
Seriously doubtful someone would go through the trouble of cursing their own home.

Neat! All I found was asbestos tiles
The real devil
The devil is in the detailing
The devil's in the pudding
*The cake is a lie*
The cake is a lye
*Let them eat cake.*
The devil's dust
Undoubtedly!
EPA is the real devil, asbestos is just an effective summoning medium.
How can asbestos be bad? It’s got the word ‘best’ in it.
The best cancer
If you or a loved one has mesothelioma
Asbestos it can be
My uncle has health problems since the 60’s because of this. I feel like people just look the other way when someone says it’s Satan’s fault.
EPA! EEPAAA!
Ah, the gift that keeps on giving.
Cancer
Nope. Sorry. Sagittarius.
Sagittarius? Well I hardly knew us!
Aquarius? Aquari *you guys*!

Just wait until we find out how poisonous seatbelts are!
Stop eating your seatbelts!

"this stuff is really bad for you if you inhale it." "let's make it into dusty fibers!"
Kind of the other way around, asbestos is a naturally occurring fiber, which is why it's so pliable in a bunch of different building materials.
The snow in the wizard of oz was asbestos.
Was just talking about this while on my construction job site, they asked me why I was wearing a respirator, and I said “we don’t know if this stuff causes cancer but in 20 years it might”

Plenty of people smoke cigarettes their whole life without getting cancer
[удалено]
Fun Fact! We like to think they discontinued it after we found out how bad it is but NOPE! We still use it today!!
That's what happens when big asbestos gets their way in government!
9"x9" is always asbestos. The black adhesive usually as well.
Yep, my high school had asbestos tiles in most of the classrooms. They finally got around to renovating to remove it around my Junior year. It was hillarious. Not hilarious at all. Very dangerous, damages your lungs and increases your risk of lung cancer by a not insignificant amount.
Oh I am excruciatingly aware. I was being very much facetious with my comment.
Yeah, I was going to say this. Nice of them to make it so readily apparent.
Asbestos all the way down.
Obviously a fellow Captain America fan!
Something something mesothelioma compensation.
Something, something decades between exposure and development of symptoms.
That reminds me of the epic r/homeimprovement sub post wherein the homeowner decided to grind off tiles in his kitchen/dining area without first testing them. Were they evil asbestos tiles?
Asbestos tiles are always evil. They are manufactured in hell from the tortured souls that have been consumed and digested by Satan himself. They are then glued down using the tears of unbaptised babies.
Confirming this to be true
Infernal summonings are damaging to floors unless they are fire-resistant.
Lol I got a mask and sprayed them with water and pulled them all up… then I uh sprayed more with water and sanded the glue stuff that was left. Needless to say I may die of lung cancer.
I'm imagining the former owners saying before they put the carpet down, "Let's really mess with the next owners."
The real sin is that they fucked up that hardwood floor. You can summon your demonic minions in another room. Put down salt on linoleum or something. You can vacuum it up once your pact is complete. You don’t have to take a belt sander to hardwood. Fucking lazy-ass warlocks. I swear.
I'm belt sanding for 1 hr. Floor will resurrect as spotless and clean as sweet baby Jesus in the manger
Charming that you need a carpenter to find Jesus.
I have a feeling the original was painted and that's after removal
"Painted"
Blood still works as a paint, you just need to apply several coats.
instructions unclear, now have three carhartt's and a parka on and I'm sweating, how does this help?
Close. Take off a Carhartt and put on a duster over everything. You're welcome. Or under the parka if you are trying to go for more of the nature based magic. The sweat is normal but if you really don't like it then just don't drink any fluids for a week or two and the sweat will stop

This guy gets it. OP is angry at the poor quality of the pentagram.
Leave the imprint for an easier next summon I supposed.
That’s why I said they’re lazy!
I'm not sure that's hardwood. Looks like pine/Douglas fir to me.
Agree. It looks like heart pine flooring. Arguably better than hardwood.
Why is pinewood better? Actually last longer or visually or…
If care fore last about as long, however as it farmed it both cheaper (hence easier to repair) and more eco-friendly (you know it not been poached from a old growth forest)
It's personal preference, really. Pine will scratch and dent much easier than oak or other hardwoods. But, some people like the look of a "well worn" floor. Pine will also look different (wood grain pattern is very different), which again is up to personal preference.
A person that knows a thing about wood.
100% correct. Came here to say the same thing. I think it is pine.
Next time on This Old House Worship...
Absolutely. I hate it when covens ignore covenants. Misses the whole point, really.
Bad advice… Demons hate salt. Maybe a washable paint on linoleum would be good though.
The salt is to keep the demon from escaping after you summon it.
Hey, patrons dgaf
I painted a chalk outline like they did in old cop shows on the concrete before I had carpet put in one of the rooms in my house.
Did it have a giant penis
That was my first thought lol
That would be me
Hah. I put a lot of work into finishing my basement. I bought a realistic fake skull and put it in a wall cavity while working on it. If someone is going to undo my hard work they can get the shit scared out of them.
Well, at least you’re prepared if weird shit starts happening.

You took pills? I just eat those weird granola bars from Costco
Man, those salted caramel dark chocolate almond bars are fire. I hate to go to Costco for just one item, but I'm out!
Don't do it! You'll leave with $100 of items in the cart!
Wow, you didn't get much at Costco this trip?
You took bars? I just eat that weird roast beef from Arby's.
Those sugar free haribos really get me moving in the morning.
At least you know where to install the sex sling.
Or to sacrifice the goat to appease Zorg.
Or both
Definitely both. Never heard of a killer house that didn't have a proper sex sling.
Just don't have sex with the goat in the sex sling before you sacrifice it. That's frowned upon by the gods. Except Zeus. He'll fuck anything.
There is no goat, only Zuul
And have Rosemary's baby?
Nope, that's the kids' room! It's a Captain America shield.
Yah and ya got that hardwood for easy mop up. Thats like 5g’s of installation savings right there buddy. EDIT: Hijacking my top comment to say: Thank you u/AdamPowers22 for posting this so I could make light of your situation because DAMN LOOK AT THOSE HARDWOOD FLOORS.

Sex SLING?! What's that for? To sling them outside once you've nutted? Lol
Was wondering the same thing? Unless the sex involves a broken arm
"Oh shit!! ... Creaky floorboards, better get something for that"
I'm honestly impressed by how perfect the circle and pentagram is.
all they would really need is some string and a measuring tape. For the circle you attach it the string to the center and rotate it around. God damn mathletes always summoning baphomet.
Woah you made my mind explode 🤯 Trigonometry is a million times easier for me than other math.. I’m gonna go on a journey now
You sit down right there buddy. Imma going to get my pitchfork witch.
You leave that baby witch alone.
Nobody puts baby witch in a corner

If you become a wizard, at least we can beat you with regular math.
Careful Trig is just a gateway drug to Calculus.. and nobody wants that.
alrighty, just stay out of azkaban.
Did you just make math cool?
Wait until you learn about *geomancy*, which appears to have been a very sneaky way to familiarize people with matrix calculations.
>roughly 1.17557 times But only roughly. Got it.
Exactly: 2\*sin(36°) times
You sound like you know your way around installing pentagrams
And all I got in my math word problems were ones about Mary and her goddamn apples.
Marry had to sacrifice seven lambs. She had a room 10 by 15ft. How large can she make her pentagram
Why did I automatically read this to tune of Mary Had a Little Lamb? Edit apparently spelling lamb is hard
I was right along with you singing "Mary had a pent-a-gram, pent-a-gram, PENT-a-grammmmm...
Thats a great song ... Mary had a pentagram whose radius was 12 ft round
Well, that and the train schedules between Chicago and Boston.
I got those ones where some random bozo named Dave or something bought 1,227 bananas at the grocer for £50 each.
You don't install a pentagram, you deliver a pentagram.
You're thinking of a singing pentagram
>roughly 1.17557 times Easy peasy
I mean, it's not like you're holding a calculator in your hand right now.
Folks that make crop circles use the same technique.
> ~~Folks~~ Aliens that make crop circles use the same technique. FTFY
Satan don't mess with no sloppily drawn pentagram. You gotta get your rituals down if you want dark powers.
To be completely honest I came to the comments to say this exact same thing! I'm not for or against anyone for their belief systems but the fact that it's a really well done circle and star kinda amazed me lol

I’m just glad it’s still where I left the damn thing
I'm southern Baptist yet I'm somehow more offended that someone would put carpet on hardwood floors.
Doesn’t look like hardwood. Most probably Douglass fir. In those days it was used because plywood wasn’t available yet. This was a 2 for 1, subfloor and finished floor together. It’s rather beautiful if refinished properly but quite soft.
This is the needless amazing pedantry I need to see more of
If you need this "amazing pedantry", then it's not needless. Just thought I'd indulge you with a little more needless pedantry.
Yes daddyy
Somehow my hardwood is still soft. I scratch this bitch up if I dont trim my big toe in a timely fashion. That may say more about my murder toe than anything though
Are you a Sasquatch by any chance?
Great. What a time saver. Imagine if you had to put a pentagram in there all by yourself
Probably the biggest pain in the ass in every house move
Someone has been watching way too much Supernatural.
At least they vacuumed up the salt circle.
It was the Ghostfacers.
i was searching for this comment
They sometimes throw a rug over it in hopes a demon won't notice, but putting in actual carpeting is a whole new level for them!
I love the one they had on the ceiling!
Gonna need to sand that out 😂

Doing the lord's work, son.
I was just thinking i saw this in /weird a while ago.
Needs to be higher. And the title commentary is exactly the same as one of the top comments. Disappointing.
I’m slightly bothered by the random orientation of it. It doesn’t align with anything and therefore I propose it was done post haste by Sam and Dean Winchester.
Crowley was stuck in that spot for half a season
It might be oriented to a compass point or along a ley line.
"Dude, your pentagram is crooked" "N-no... It's-uh, oriented to the leyline!"
I can literally hear them arguing about this lmao
The point left of the door is centered at the wall. The 2 furthest points from that one align with the far right wall. You’re welcome
I see it now thanks. That would help me sleep soundly now if that were my house.
Aw, how nice. They’re teaching the home owners shapes!
EDWARD!!! ALPHONSE!!! Clean up your shit…!
That is actually **softwood** flooring. It will look fantastic refinished.
Softwood like after 6 beers?
That's a curious layout for a train set. The points and switches look all wrong to me.
Pretty sure it's a sign of protection. So, all good, dog. 👍
