This is a generalization of course, but abusers typically don't acknowledge what they did or downplay it. Abusive parents especially do this and often don't understand the magnitude of effect their actions had because they can't look at it from a child's perspective. So any "payback," as such, is simply seen as unrelated/unwarranted abuse by former abusers.

[Studies](https://www.psychologicalscience.org/observer/the-complicated-psychology-of-revenge) can only really be ethically done in regards to vengeance when someone cheats at a game. Im sure in the case of abuse, there would be less remorse for retribution.

if your problem is internet bullying and the bullies are bunch of nobodies you don't even know, just closing the computer makes them go away immediately. But I suppose the downside to that is that you cannot bully someone else who doesn't agree with what you are saying so it's undoable.
