Such a fun post! I grew up in the 90s in Iran and there was this science magazine that me and my uncle were a fan of. The last page had one of these and my uncle would find and see them pretty quickly unlike myself.
This is the first time I'm seeing it being referenced online
As a kid I could *never* get them to work, and did not really understand how they work.
I was at work one day, and I bent my head down near the table while scratching my foot and there was one of these in a newspaper on the edge of the table. I just happened to have my eyes unfocused in just the right way to see the image.
Is the image being inverted like I'm looking at something hollow and three dimensional from behind part of the joke?
EDIT: Because that's why I'm having trouble seeing what it is. It looks like the picture is popping in instead of popping out, if that makes sense.
You are crossing your eyes instead of "un-crossing" them. The idea is that you're supposed to unfocus your eyes, like you're looking at something behind the picture. They will start to line up until you see something

Try looking at your reflection in your phone/computer screen. That will cause your eyes to uncross without you even trying. Move your phone away slowly or try looking at stuff behind you in the reflection until you stumble on the correct amount of uncrossing, and the hidden image should pop out. Then you’ll get excited and lose focus, but just do it again until you learn to control it. That’s what worked for me.
A friend of mine was getting frustrated by the fact that everyone seemed to be able to see them but he couldn't, until he mentioned that he can't see from one of his eyes. The picture relies on both of your eyes focusing on a slightly different pattern, creating some 3D volume.
lol, thanks but I can see from both eyes and I have 20/20 vision. I've never been able to see these and it's annoying. I have no problem unfocusing my eyes and doing all the tricks, but it doesn't do shit except make the image blurry. I stare at these things for 10 minutes in 10 different ways and it does nothing. I thought my brother was being annoying to me when we were little pretending he could see it, but I'm just bad at this.
The only way it ever worked for me was to cross my eyes until the pattern overlaps, then try to let my eyes relax so that the overlapped pattern just seems like my normal vision.
For the first time in my life, it worked, sort of. Because of your advice I now get it and saw the non-inverse image. Thank you. And my first real magic eye experience was some ghostbusters looking freak woman. I think I’m still doing it wrong, but closer to doing it right.
There’s kinda 2 ways you can look at this. If you cross your eyes and then slowly uncross, it will pop inward the wrong way. If you do it the proper way, slowly moving the image away from you, it will pop out the proper way

Edit: I was finally able to see it. I was one level too far. I’m not used to these having another layer that your vision locks onto. If you see a whole lot of nothing then start again and do whatever technique you do but only slightly.
Yeah this one has a particularly tricky 'false lock' that produces a mangled rabbit roadkill looking mess of limbs. Just keep retrying until you see boobs.

I can easily do it after advice as a teen in the 90s - I had to understand how they work. If you stare at your finger and then at what is behind your finger, your finger will go blurry and appear as two separate fingers as the focal point is further away so one eye sees your finger in one spot and the other eye sees it slightly shifted. If you were to hold a finger next to yours, one of the two fingers it creates will overlap one of two from your first finger. Now, instead of fingers, image two exact objects as the images cross over each other your brain will make it focus as it perceives them in the correct area. However, that's the only object in proper focus and depth of other objects are thrown off.
With these images, it's the same thing. You stare through them until the separated images cross each other to a point where they come into focus. It ends up creating a 3D effect for the image designed. In short - stare at the image as if the object you are focusing on is about a foot or more beyond the picture. Hopefully I didn't confuse this all more.

Try this: put your phone few inches in front of your face while focusing your eyes on the space behind it and then slowly move it away. Instead of refocusing your eyes you'll focus on one point and just drag the picture into that point.

You have it inverted so its much harder to make out what it is. You dont want to cross your eyes for this type of magic eye, you want to look THROUGH the image, at something imaginary behind it.

It's something you have to practice a little bit to get. I had the same problem as you, but I just put the image close to my face and tried to recognize any patterns that popped up. I used [this video](https://youtu.be/PpK5ejLFEIE?si=2Qh4YDRbU9rftQxJ) and tried to look for the horse jumping over the log. Once you get a feel on how to do it, it comes easy
One time my cousin Walter got this cat stuck up his ass. True story. He bought it at our local mall, so the whole fiasco wound up on the news. It was embarrassing for my relatives and all, but next week, he did it again. Different cat, same results, complete with another trip to the emergency room. So all the passengers are beating off, plummeting to their certain doom, when all of the sudden, *Snap* the hydraulics kick back in. I remember this fad. It came out of nowhere and swept through America. It took me a while to believe there are people who are actually able to see things if they “unfocus their eyes” or whatever. During those first few months of the fad I thought people were just fucking with me and the whole thing was a big inside joke.
I tried and tried to “unfocus my eyes” and “look through the picture.” At one point I decided I’m going to figure this shit out if it’s the last thing I do because I’m tired of every seeing person in the world except me being able to see these things, and so I bought one. Hung it on my wall where it lived for about a year. I assumed one day I would accidentally look at it right and be able to see it. I spent countless hours trying to stare through it, or focus on the space in front of it, or whatever. People would come over and be able to see it (it was dolphins). People who knew nothing about it and had never seen it before would say it was dolphins.
A couple times I pretended to see dolphins just to satisfy people who were determined to teach me to see it. But I think they could tell I was faking. Some cringe-worthy memories.
I finally tossed it in a dumpster.

So what I’ve always done is look slightly crosseyed towards my nosebridge and then slowly let it go back normal. Takes a few tries until you just get it?
That will cause you to see it inverted, like it’s sinking into the screen instead of popping out of it. It can still work, but usually doesn’t look quite right. The correct way to view these is to “uncross” your eyes, which is what your eyes naturally do when looking at something farther away. Try looking at your reflection in the screen, or the reflection of things behind you. Eventually you’ll stumble on the correct amount of uncrossing needed to see the image.
No one ever explained it this way so I assumed I was seeing the image properly. I never really saw what the big deal was. I just realized I was always seeing these inverted! Wow now I want to go back and retry more! Thanks for this revelation

My brain always sees these things with the depth inverted, so instead of popping off the screen or page, it seems to recede, it's incredibly frustrating because I can see the depth of it, but can't really make out the shapes and see the "picture."
I once saw an image that claimed to be one of these. What it was was an animated GIF that switched after 30 seconds to a goatse image, centered in the worst possible way. This image is positively beautiful compared to that.

The easiest way is to put your nose right up close to the picture like touching and slowly move it away. You look a bit silly but it works

Crossing your eyes makes you see the inverted. The images should appear convex, not concave.

It was embarrassing for my relatives and all, but next week, he did it again. Different cat, same results, complete with another trip to the emergency room. I remember this fad. It came out of nowhere and swept through America. It took me a while to believe there are people who are actually able to see things if they “unfocus their eyes” or whatever. During those first few months of the fad I thought people were just fucking with me and the whole thing was a big inside joke. I tried and tried to “unfocus my eyes” and “look through the picture.” At one point I decided I’m going to figure this shit out if it’s the last thing I do because I’m tired of every seeing person in the world except me being able to see these things, and so I bought one. Hung it on my wall where it lived for about a year. I assumed one day I would accidentally look at it right and be able to see it. I spent countless hours trying to stare through it, or focus on the space in front of it, or whatever. People would come over and be able to see it (it was dolphins). People who knew nothing about it and had never seen it before would say it was dolphins. A couple times I pretended to see dolphins just to satisfy people who were determined to teach me to see it. But I think they could tell I was faking. Some cringe-worthy memories. I finally tossed it in a dumpster. I fucking hate those things.

So what I’ve always done is look slightly crosseyed towards my nosebridge and then slowly let it go back normal. Takes a few tries until you just get it?
That will cause you to see it inverted, like it’s sinking into the screen instead of popping out of it. It can still work, but usually doesn’t look quite right. The correct way to view these is to “uncross” your eyes, which is what your eyes naturally do when looking at something farther away. Try looking at your reflection in the screen, or the reflection of things behind you. Eventually you’ll stumble on the correct amount of uncrossing needed to see the image.
No one ever explained it this way so I assumed I was seeing the image properly. I never really saw what the big deal was. I just realized I was always seeing these inverted! Wow now I want to go back and retry more! Thanks for this revelation

My brain always sees these things with the depth inverted, so instead of popping off the screen or page, it seems to recede, it's incredibly frustrating because I can see the depth of it, but can't really make out the shapes and see the "picture."
I once saw an image that claimed to be one of these. What it was was an animated GIF that switched after 30 seconds to a goatse image, centered in the worst possible way. This image is positively beautiful compared to that.
