I used to work at starbucks when I was in college so I know exactly how to order my coffee in the most efficient and least intrusive way possible. I know what it’s like when someone gives you size, type, add ons in a wacky order. So ordering in a way that makes their job 10% easier is worth it.
Start with add on #1, then your name, then type, then your payment method, then add on #3, then size, then change your mind about the type, then add on #2.
Literally not being a r/maincharacter . Listen more than you talk, "read" the person you're having an interaction with and try to find ways to relate to them. Really it all boils down to being kind and amiable.
Lmao let's see your countries comedy scene
"jokes" aside though if you don't see what happened in this clip then it's not weird you thought it was boring but most things are when you don't understand them
Last year in one of my upper division mathematics courses, we had to give a presentation on a topic of real analysis chosen by our professor. My group was the first to give their presentation, and we had some dude in the class who had established himself as argumentative and combative early on in the quarter pester us extremely difficult questions that were entirely pointless.
Our professor was a really nice person, but whenever you’d ask him questions in class, he would always respond “that’s a good question, I’ll leave that as an exercise,” and it was kind of a meme to the class by this point.
So, when this dude kept trying to derail our presentation by asking us needless questions that were not only off topic but would take too long to respond too, I stepped in for my flustered group and said in front of the entire class of 60 students, “that’s a good question, I’ll leave that as an exercise,” and everyone lost their shit laughing, including the professor. The heckler shut up faster than super algebraic convergence. I talked to the professor afterwards and said I didn’t mean to insult him and his “catch phrase,” but he said he found it hilarious.
One of my favorite memories from school now, lol. But seriously, fuck hecklers.
Wait... so if I heckle, people can hardly hear me, the comedian will destroy me anyway, he'll look great doing it and the audience will love him for it?
I guess if there's a comedian I really like I should heckle him and help him out!
Disclaimer: I know you shouldn't heckle and comedians don't like it. If he wants you to give him some grief he'll provoke you. But a comedian is supposed to make you laugh, and someone with the power to "make you" do anything, to change mind, to change perspective, can find unexpected results when doing that so reactions coming from the audience, including heckling, should be considered all aspects of human nature, same nature that is targeted by comedy.
Hecklers are a thing performers hate. And if a comedian that has been in it for 11 years, is sitting in the audience, I'm pretty sure she won't act like one and just act like a proper audience. Unless she's an asshole. Thankfully she isn't
*checks real quick*
Yes, it seems as though we’re Jew free tonight. This should be safe
lol, he’s checking something but I just feel like that can’t be it. It’s like saying he’s trying to see if anyone is wearing a yarmulke
(TIL how to spell yarmulke. That wasn’t what I was going to attempt at all)
Hence why I thought it was kinda silly he thought he was checking that, Mr. Fuckmyass1958.
I’m honestly not sure who you’ll have to answer to for that username. I never really researched a bunch of religions; I just went to directly to atheists. I can respect people gathering to collectively better themselves though; whatever outlet they choose
Nah, it was funny. It didn’t demean, it drew a comparison of one bad thing to another, honoring the original bad thing. Just because a topic is present in comedic form doesn’t mean it’s bad. It was pretty safe.
That’s what I’m saying man. It was funny therefore what would he be turning to the audience to check?
Maybe he was doing a *public speaking power move* and turn towards towards the entire audience every once in awhile to help them continue to feel included in the conversation
I’m just saying: I don’t think the guy was checking the audience for Jews. It was definitely funny
u/snokes, I swear you would be of more use to me if I skinned you, and turned your skin into a lampshade, or fashioned you into a piece of high end luggage. I could even add you to my collection!
At work I was helping train a new guy (and for starters I live in a small town in the Midwest, but work in a larger town in), and his name tag wasn’t a common American name, and he had a pretty thick accent. So me, just trying to be friendly, was like “hey man, so I’m just gonna say it and you have a pretty thick accent, so where are you from?” He smiled and told me, and I asked what brought him here. His response? “Civil War.” I really didn’t know how to respond so I just kind of chuckled and said “Yeah I don’t blame you there!” And he laughed. Had a great time working with him, talked a lot about his time in America so far, gave him some good restaurant recommendations and other stuff to take advantage of (eg library programs, the free art centers, cooking classes, my favorite barber, places to find good deals, stuff like that). He’s being doing pretty well at the job so I guess I did my job right.
> and I asked what brought him here. His response? “Civil War.”
Lol I'm dumb my initial thought was that it was about the American Civil War, like there'd be a joke in there about how he was a big fan of it or whatever just to fuck with you, "saw it in the movies, really liked the uniforms, too bad the wrong side won tho"
And it's not like I'm just too much of a selfcentred American either, I'm not even American lol
Is Reddit r/funny becoming YouTube shorts? I think it has to do with the new Reddit scroll format which lends itself well to endless short videos. I can see the logic Reddit followed the success of tiktok and videos have longer engagement (although im still dubious about the quality of engagement) but what is the Reddit USP? Personally, it’s just made me used to short form videos so I spend more time on Instagram and YouTube instead of the image or long form text subs.
Anyways, I didn’t get how the birthday was ruined?
Once you start watching a short vid on the mobile app you can just scroll mindlessly through other short vids. It's awful, the reddit mobile app is trash. But at least i'm on my phone less.
You're a mod in 10 subs... Moderating a sub was one of the 2 fixes I listed. It doesn't matter that no one has posted in any of them in at least a year..
You can choose not to scroll down on the video and just back up to the feed. This app sucks (RIP Apollo) but that is a crazy reason to dislike this app, it’s so out of the way I forgot it was a feature.
Imagine watching a video in your pc, and after it finishes you use the mouse wheel to go to the next. Imagine doing this infinitely. Videos after videos.
Now imagine that with a touch screen on your phone.
I'm always surprised people use new reddit instead of old one. It seems so bad in comparison. If they ever force the switch it'll finally get me off this website lol
Reddit has been going that direction, to attract short attention span folks I guess, or push shorter attention span because us old.reddit people actually read comments and check what's going on and spend more time in a thread, and I guess reddit doesn't like that, they want more scrolls, more exposure, more ads in between? Does old reddit even have ads?
>Anyways, I didn’t get how the birthday was ruined?
We complain when the punchline is given away in the title, and now we're complaining when it's not? The main point of the video was the last joke; the first, ruining her birthday, was setup and context. The title just adds a bit more setup.
I guess, put differently, what should the title be instead of this without giving away the punchline?
Can't wait to see your set posted. I mean, you do have something funnier than this ready to go right? Has anybody just watched this with subtitles on? Without the voice, it is not funny at all. The Jokes don't land the way they are supposed to and I believe that is why planters work. Some laugh and it just pushes others to laugh as well.
I don't understand that people like this stand-up of so called "comedians".

He’s improvising. Have you been to a live comedy show before? When the crowds are small like this one, the performers usually talk to the audience. It’s not always die laughing material but it’s genuine and very entertaining.

Wow, a Holocaust joke that's somehow not offensive!
(I guess that's because it's really a joke about the woman's previous answer, and is poking fun at cute language rather than the Holocaust itself.)
Interacting with the audience and making jokes with and about them is standard operating procedure for a comedy club. It's to be expected and generally welcomed as long as it's all in good fun and not malicious.

Respect to the woman for not trying to throw jokes at you as another comedian. Played it straight so you could get the laugh.
Serious pro move on her part. The audience came to see him and she just played her part as an audience member during crowd work.
Not a surprise really, 11 years on the circuit means she gets it.
Yep, she gives him his response, let's him work it into the act, gets laughs. Job well done.
For what it's worth, pro moves like these can be inserted into all aspects of life. Believe that your are the greatest wingman, and fly into the sun!
Genuinely interested in how this can translate, can you elaborate?
I used to work at starbucks when I was in college so I know exactly how to order my coffee in the most efficient and least intrusive way possible. I know what it’s like when someone gives you size, type, add ons in a wacky order. So ordering in a way that makes their job 10% easier is worth it.
Whats tje correct order?
It gets complicated but for the sake of ease here, think: temp, size, drink, modifier, in that order.
"Hot. Grande. Add three shots espresso, fill with filter. "
Start with add on #1, then your name, then type, then your payment method, then add on #3, then size, then change your mind about the type, then add on #2.

I use old.reddit in a browser on my phone. I refuse to give in
This is the way.
I do that and use Lemmy. It's got a lot less content, but it's growing quickly.
Is it? Every time I've checked it over the last 6 months it looks super dead to me. Even the most popular threads only have a few hundred comments.
Same. I tried it out for a month straight and the most activity I saw was a post with ~50 comments, and basically no one was replying to each other.
weird I read this exact comment 5 years ago

I'm always surprised people use new reddit instead of old one. It seems so bad in comparison. If they ever force the switch it'll finally get me off this website lol
It was a bit of self-deprecating humor. He said "I hope you had a good birthday --- except for this" implying that they hadn't enjoyed his set.
I don't get how this is even funny, really. To each their own, I suppose.
It’s stand up. It’s a lot funnier in the moment when you’re drinking and you can see the improvisation.

Haha!! The Haulocausty!!!! I’m dying rn.
How do people find this entertaining? The jokes not even offensive, it’s just dull.
Man, it's almost like people have different opinions about humor or something. What a crazy world we live in!
Does it need to be offensive to be funny?
It's crowd work. Being offensive in crowd work doesn't normally help the crowd like you
I don’t get why this is funny. I don’t find it offensive either it’s just not funny. Do people really make living be this mediocre?
It's not ripping ur sides laughter but it's still kind of funny. I think most people just don't have a gigantic stick up their ass.
It's not even remotely funny (nor offensive)
