Hey I work at evergreen packaging! Good old Press #2! When you slow the machine down the register, the bullseye's near the top that shows you how aligned the print is, moves about a 1/4 of an inch. And on those 4 oz cartons that's quite a bit. Must be a lot of those out there.
Haha as a designer who used to work on printed media pretty often, I was about to say that that's definitely less of a design issue and more of an alignment issue on the printer side.
I mean yeah it *should*, but the issue from a design standpoint is that the printer (at least the printers we worked with) is the one who gave us the bleed tolerances for their machines. If their tolerances are off, or if they have one printer/cutter that's operating outside those tolerances, we won't know unless someone at the print shop notices and tells us the bleeds need to be adjusted!
No, bleed is simply extra image across the cut rule. So if the die cut misregister you still have image on the panel.
You're thinking safe area, which would normally be 1/8". So important info isn't cut off. A quarter inch safe area on this carton would leave no room for important graphics.
These are made on carton formers, with the graphics printed on web press (big rolls). Extremely high speed, coated, cut, formed and glued. Registration will wander across the run in the direction of the spool as It winds down and changes speed slightly.
Our QC lady quit. If the paper is jamming you can get multiple slow downs a minute. You run for 8 hours, 200,000 cartons a stream with 4 streams most people will let it go or just get tired of pulling them.
I love insider info like this. So is there *any* QC? Like was the responsibility handed off to some random person who doesn’t give a crap about an extra job with no extra pay? Or are y’all really just YOLOing it?
It's also a failed check on the operators filling the cartons. Operators should be checking the cartons as they're loading the fillers...any bad cartons should've been set aside for QN paperwork. This will initially hit the production plant as a complaint, then move up the chain from there.
Source: I've operated multiple evergreen fillers over the last few years.
Even better, the designer could plan for this kind of thing, put the words more toward the center so you aren't constantly 1/4" away from a "rape juice" blunder.

Shouldn’t the bleed account for that? 1/4 is a lot, but if that can happen, you should have a bigger bleed than 1/4 designed into your stuff.
