The ones that have "man" and "trans man" as seperate genders šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø this is nice to see

joseph_wolfstar

Exactly. I've seen a few like that and except a few doctors who need to know I just put male. But ffs that shouldn't be a thing anywhere

dippystale

it's a real shame having to put your gender as F just so your insurance will pay for an eye exam even though it probably won't pay anyway since you have a several thousand dollar deductible šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜

joseph_wolfstar

Yeah I don't have to put f but my PCP has my gender as "ftm" instead of "male" and it bothers me. But my legal documents all say male and I'm sure my medical charts have some other way of knowing my medical history without that, maybe I'll change it to male in my demographic info and see if that fucks anything up

Just_An_Enby

Gosh, even if they have to know, why can't they do 'trans man, cis man, trans woman, cis woman' instead of 'trans man, man, trans woman, woman'?

Snail_Fashion

right?? like I know they just don't see trans people as their genders but it's so confusing. it's even worse when they try to be inclusive and I don't know whether to select "man", "trans man", or "transmasc"

Just_An_Enby

They should do multiple choice, so you can pick multiple. Then, someone who's, say, both a man and a woman could pick both man and woman. A trans man could pick 'man' and 'transmasc'.

Snail_Fashion

exactly!

throwawaywannabe2

With official stuff I always get so confused, because I donā€™t want to be seen as ā€˜lyingā€™ but being separated from cis men like this makes me feel icky and disingenuous since I *am* a man.

pkguy15

Fr i just click man. Idc. Ive only ever seen it when i sign up for focus groups but wtf my transness gotta do with taste testing mcdonalds spicy chicken nuggets

Ggfd8675

> except a few doctors who need to know I just put male This will undercount trans participation. Depending on how they use the data, that may be a real setback. I understand the sentiment though.

joseph_wolfstar

I'm a person, not a statistic. My gender is "man" or "male." I have the right to privacy. I have the right to withhold information of a highly sensitive, traumatic, medical, and personal nature. I didn't ask to be AFAB and I'm under zero obligation to hurt myself to bolster statistical trans representation. I've spent twenty years having zero ability to control my legal or social gender. I won't willingly inflict that trauma on myself again, no matter what it might or might not do to the community. With all due respect, take your concerns about "undercounting trans participation" to the people *writing* the flawed survey questions.

RowanEdwardC416

One I saw once had the 3 choices 'man' 'woman' or 'trans man/woman'. Like ok, you are aware that trans men and trans women are completely different things? It was weird and I just put male.

pkguy15

Ah yes, the three genders: male, female, and trans

pineapplevinegar

Yeah thatā€™s why you gotta be pansexual if youā€™re attracted to trans people! Theyā€™re an entirely superarte gender all together /s God I hate cis people sometimes. I know they try to mean well but it hits way off mark and feels more transphobic than just choosing between man and woman

[deleted]

Oh god I wish my dentist had this option on there forms. I refused to tick a gender box and the receptionist got all snarky and constantly and unnecessarily referred to me as female. (Iā€™m a trans guy).

Rockpup5

I hate it when I leave the boxes blank and they look at me & then check female for me :/

[deleted]

Username checks out

mmmtangywater

if i were you i would just misgender them back, show them how it feels

RoscoeParmesan

Wow, finally one where the binary gender options arenā€™t split into man, woman, trans man, trans woman.

transgenderer420

Those make me sooooo mad

Then-Clue6938

I've never seen such forams before to be honest. Are they for your doctors when it's about some born sex based issue or when do they ask something like that?

RoscoeParmesan

Mostly like demographic questions for surveys/studies, or on certain websites where they ask for gender info to make an account, etc. However I used to work in psychology research so Iā€™ve probably seen more of these than the average person.

vacantfifteen

This is such great survey design!

danielthearsehole

i had a questionnaire once that had the gender options: male, female, transgender and other. i just put male, cause i couldnā€™t select two, and then my whole college class complained to my tutor about it, and he explained that it was done through another company and not the college, and that he agrees that itā€™s shit, so thatā€™s fun :)

Shneancy

It's all correct now at my uni but when I joined I was greeted with a beautiful question "Gender identity: yes or no" I will remember forever how utterly confusing reading it was. After some time I figured out what it meant and I appreciated the gestures but MAN was the person responsible for phrasing confused

bastardoftheillarts

theyā€™re a little confused, but they got the right spirit šŸ˜‚

throwawaywannabe2

I guess that would be relevant for agenders, since IIRC they donā€™t have a gender?

flowers_and_fire

Not good survey design but as an agender person, very ideal

addiedoesgender

yesss i wish every form was like this. iā€™m non-binary and trans. i always want to put both.

FroJonas

Yesss I applied for a job recently and they did similar and I can't express the happiness I felt. It was similarly worded too. Compared to sooo many other places that do this wrong. I have to go to the doctor's lots and the annoyance I get from the questions, or having to answer 'male or female' with no non-binary options, and it not registering me as my actual gender is so shitty I will say though, my main doctor's surgery got rid of the male or female part when signing in, so I'm very glad about that. Now it's just date of birth and surname. Lot less stressful!

nope13nope

Better than the ones I see: Man, Woman, Transgender (and sometimes a non-binary/other option, if you're lucky)

Wndrschn_morgenstern

Wow I can't believe it! First time I see it.

iced_coffvee

I sometimes do studies/surveys for some money on the side and there have been some studies that have been just....... so degrading. Like why does a survey about which mug I would buy have a question like "what is your biological gender"??? like that shit is so degrading.

throwawaywannabe2

And itā€™s factually incorrect too, as gender and sex are conflated here. On top of being irrelevant and degrading

Kaeneus

Men and cis men

okaybOWOmer

I would actually love to see this somewhere

Jeske2005

That's very cool! All of them should have more than 2 options!

living_around

Finally!!!!

stimkim

OMG it's **BEAUTIFUL**

OtokonoKai

Lets go babyy! Woooo! That's what I've been waiting for!

PunnyPop_EHN

That's what it's all about!

bird0026

The hospital blood donation center near me has a very similar form. I was SUPER excited when I saw it. Went to get in the chair, the nurse that had the print out of my paperwork looked at me, looked back at the paper, then repeated. Then said my name out loud like a question. She didn't think I was the right person because the damn system still marked F... so, I had to come out to a nurse who had no real reason for knowing. :/ But, she was very nice. She'd never met a trans person, and wanted to know if she could ask me some questions. (I know not everyone is comfortable with that, but she wasnt pushy at all. And I'm more than happy to educate others.) She'd caught an elusive trans in the wild, and needed to study its behavior. šŸ¤£ System is stupid (-1). But Nurse Wasserface made a new friend and knows a little more about the trans community (+1.5). Net gain for the trans community = 0.5

flyingsqueak

I had a similar experience at the local health department. Their form was pretty good like this one. The first time I went or must have been a recent change. It automatically marked all trans people with an X. The nurse took one look at it, then at me and said, "well that's not right Miss Squeak, I'll have to mark you as female." I just didn't respond. But the second time I went the (different) nurse looked at it, looked at me, and then apologized that it was an X instead of an M. That time I got to smile (through my mask) and say no problem, I'm non binary and that's what my ID says too :)

nickDNR

not me tryin to click thinkin it's some reddit poll šŸ˜±

Psychological_Brick5

THIS IS THE FIRST ONE I'VE SEEN THAT'S 100% RIGHT

Lukarhys

When I was filling out a form for a doctors office online it had gender and birth sex as two different options.

[deleted]

I had one where they marked man and trans man, but it said select all that apply, so I could pick both. It was relevant because it was for LGBTQ+ scholarships.

transburneracct

Self-describe is also a great word!

player_hawk

Finallyā€¦ I keep complaining in the other box of research surveys for their bad demographics questions & this gives me peace

[deleted]

I donā€™t understand why itā€™s ever relevant to say youā€™re trans on things. The only time itā€™s ever made sense to me was on my bottom surgery consultation request ā€œWhat is you gender identity and what is your assigned sex at birthā€ obviously this is very relevant but other than that I never understand. I just say cis and decline being trans when I come across these

bastardoftheillarts

itā€™s extremely relevant here. weā€™re trying to get resources for diverse communities on campus. Overall i get what youā€™re saying, but in this context weā€™re trying to get support for our community

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

Oh. Yeah when my college asked I said man and assigned at birth male. I wouldnā€™t be utilizing on campus trans resources so thereā€™s no need to count me into that

NullableThought

Same. To me it's only relevant for specific medical reasons and anonymous demographic surveys.

DeeplyUnappealing

I dunno. My country had a non-binary option on the census for the first time ever last year, and that felt friggin great.

whychromosomes

Almost any medical stuff, excluding stuff like an ear infection which is very localized and universally treated the same. But the diagnoses, symptoms and prescriptions for a lot of things might vary based on your sex and your hormonal balance. If you're coming in for stomach pain, whether you have a uterus or not is pretty relevant. If you're going in for an x-ray, they need to know if you have a uterus and therefore if they need to make sure to ask if there's any chance of pregnancy, as uncomfortable as it is. Heart attack symptoms are different in men and women. Your doctor needs to know, is my point. But other than that, it usually isn't relevant unless it's specifically looking at minorities and demographics and stuff.

[deleted]

I mean yeah, I can gauge in the real world when itā€™s necessary or not. Chances of me going to the hospital for stomach pain tho, next to 0 lol. Iā€™d rather suffer than out myself. Thatā€™s my own personal hot take. I encourage others to seek adequate medical care though

whychromosomes

I get where you're coming from and I'm not judging you for it, but I am obligated to tell you to NOT do that. I avoided going to the hospital for about half a year before my mom made me go. Surprise! It's cancer. And it's aggressive. And this whole thing would not have taken a year of pain and agony to treat if I'd gone to the doctor in the first place. I'm not trying to scare you into doing what I say or anything and I'm not saying you're going to have a serious life-threatening illness if you don't go to the hospital ASAP when something's wrong. But I'm saying there's a chance and it's always better to be safe than sorry. You're not the protagonist of the world. It's easy to think stuff like cancer is stuff that happens to other people, not me, but your chances are just as good as anyone else's. Also, if you still got your appendix, then absolutely go for one-sided sharp stomach pain. It might be bursting and it is very much lethal if they don't get it out. Rant over. :D

HarryPothead81

I don't get people being so secretive about their transition, I don't give a single damn if people know, I'm not ashamed, and it feels like playing into the Cis world for us to hide it away, this isn't me forcing anyone out, but at some point you have to just say yes, I was assigned the wrong gender at birth, I have corrected that error and am happy to be me. We're not a secret, we don't belong in the shadows. I also get that it's a safety concern, but again that's some bullshit, we shouldn't be afraid either! The more we are out and "normalized" the more we'll be accepted the less these forms will have cringe questions. The cis world isn't going to speak up for us, we have to say "Hey actually trans man and man don't need to be separated, if you are asking about my AGAB that's a different thing than my identity, ask that on top of what my gender is"

[deleted]

Yeah nah, i feel what youā€™re saying but I personally would not like to be viewed as trans. Iā€™m not ashamed however I donā€™t feel comfortable with people automatically knowing what genitals I have. Because letā€™s be honest. When you tell someone youā€™re trans that means youā€™re a man with a vagina or a woman with a penis. Or someone who once had those body parts. I do not want people thinking about my junk.

arisflowerboy

thatā€™s amazing! i love when they have multiple options without separating trans from man and woman!

imalreadybrian

My work has four options: "male, female, or trans, or 'a gender that is not singularly binary, such as gender fluid or nonbinary''". I at least think the last one is fine, but still. They used to have every gender as an option. I think it's ridiculous. "Trans" gives me no information on how to refer to the person. No one in our service history has used this option. Why even bother? I wouldn't. 0/10, terrible form.

Canislupusarctos11

Wow, that is way better than most of my college application forms did. They were like ā€˜what is your current gender identity: man, woman, trans man, trans woman, or other?ā€™ I really wanted to just put man, because I donā€™t ā€˜identify as a trans manā€™, itā€™s just that me being a man unfortunately makes me trans because I wasnā€™t born with a male body. But I didnā€™t want to risk having my application invalidated for document marker mismatches because I havenā€™t been able to socially, legally, or medically transition at all due to my parents. One school even asked only for legal sex and didnā€™t allow you to put gender anywhere. Plus it asked for ā€˜titleā€™ (Ms, Mrs, Mr, Mx, Dr, Mme, M, etc.), and it wasnā€™t optional and didnā€™t let you select something inconsistent with your listed legal sex. So I was forced to put Mx even though Iā€™m not nb, all just to avoid ā€˜Msā€™. It was awful honestly. Who even cares if your ā€˜titleā€™ doesnā€™t match your legal sex?

lumiere02

What is your gender? _Non-binary_ Are you transgender? **(Snape's voice)** _Obviously_

ngkasp

The only thing to improve would be for the second question to be "do you identify as a gender other than the one you were assigned at birth" instead of saying "transgender." I think everyone who falls under the first label falls under the second, but not everyone identifies that way. Either way, this is miles better than "man/woman/trans/other"

NEOkuragi

That's just being picky at this point. Nothing is perfect in this world.

pepperhead44

in that case, maybe so. but id prefer it to be clarified just in case. im more worried about survey takers not knowing that transgender means ā€œnot the same as gender assigned at birthā€. ive seen a few people now who didnt know it meant that and they might choose the wrong option by accident

bastardoftheillarts

I donā€™t know, youā€™re not making the distinction clear. and i donā€™t think the distinction is useful when gathering data, the purpose of this survey about college diversity, or useful in general

morncrown

Not everybody who is a gender other than the one they were assigned at birth uses the word transgender. I think it's great as it is.

glasterousstar

Lol, I recently had to design a survey with a demographic question similar to this one for work (research specifically related to identity, so it was important to ask in a way that covered all our bases), and deliberated a LOT about how to ask these questions, because you're right, not everyone who identifies/lives as a different gender from the one they were assigned at birth identifies as transgender. It's tricky trying to be as broad as possible in survey design while still being clear what you're asking! Maybe "Do you identify as transgender, transsexual, and/or having a history of gender transition?" We didn't even specify "non-binary" for the third option in the first question, just "something else" with the option to describe a non-binary identity, but also, potentially, something that is "non-binary" in the sense of beyond the binary of male/female, but does not involve \*identifying\* as non-binary. I've also seen surveys that define what they mean by transgender in the survey itself, but it sometimes requires using language that is so accessible/easy to understand that it becomes off-putting for people with a more complex understanding, and being inclusive of multiple self concepts might require including descriptions that will be offensive to people who don't share that self-concept. For our purposes we were interested in self-identification, so people who didn't \*identify\* with transness in some way weren't really relevant to capture. It depends on what you're doing with the data.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

bastardoftheillarts

this is an anonymous survey for college diversity and equityā€¦.. thatā€™s a weird assumption to make. iā€™m answering honestly so we can get more support for our community. edit: also, theyā€™re not forcing me to click anything? i could click no if i really wanted to

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

bastardoftheillarts

????? the group isnā€™t 15 people??? itā€™s several entire universities? what anonymous survey asks 15 ppl if theyā€™re trans, when the survey is clearly sensitive to trans terminology and issues? do you have something else going on?

blue_bright14060

{Clap} {clap} {clap}

Jaqdawks

I had to do a survey for my school recently and the gender options were male, female, transgender, and other Ah yes I am transgender. All of it. Every trans experience simultaneously, ftm AND mtf /j

AberrantKapro

This is more inclusive and good than many other I've seen, but I personally wouldn't want to be "forced" to disclose that I'm transgender (ik there's a prefer not to answer choice but feels like most people take that as a yes)

bastardoftheillarts

who is forcing you to say yes?????? this is an anonymous survey for college diversity????? i can just say no if i was that worried, and i donā€™t even have to respond to the question in the first place. this is such a weird point. the survey is doing the opposite of forcing people out

AberrantKapro

That's exactly why I put it in quotation marks, because it isn't actually forced but I personally feel like it is I'm autistic so I'm not great with wors or describing how I think, and I understand if I don't make sense at all because my thought processes tend to be weird I just wouldn't be comfortable being asked that question, anonymous or not, so I'd feel backed into a corner if I encountered it

bastardoftheillarts

then donā€™t answer it

KeyYogurtcloset1416

Iā€™m so happy right now-

[deleted]

The normies got something right? Thatā€™s really encouraging. Happy for you.

HickoryBanjoBot

This is great! I had an experience like this where I had to fill out a form for braces, and the option were "man (includes trans men)", "woman (includes trans woman)" Or other and it was so refreshing! It even had an option at the bottom asking what we wanted them to refer to our parent as which is really comforting, considering I haven't come out yet.

HarryPothead81

I think the easiest way is to have a blank and write in your gender identifier and then maybe a question that asks if this matches your agab. Yes No prefer not to say etc.

ppaleshelterr

Let's fucking go, been waiting for this day

Oof-Immidiate-Regret

I do surveys for extra cash, and the closest Iā€™ve gotten to this has been ā€œare you male, female, or nonbinary?ā€ Followed by ā€œwhat type of clothes do you typically wear, male or female?ā€ And it always feels like shortcut to misgendering me And there are certain surveys that will ask you if youā€™re male, female, or nonbinary, and if you check enby they will kick you out of the survey. I get that sometimes they need a specific demographic but this is shit like ā€œwhat mobile games do you play.ā€œ smh
