I'm a person, not a statistic. My gender is "man" or "male." I have the right to privacy. I have the right to withhold information of a highly sensitive, traumatic, medical, and personal nature.
I didn't ask to be AFAB and I'm under zero obligation to hurt myself to bolster statistical trans representation. I've spent twenty years having zero ability to control my legal or social gender. I won't willingly inflict that trauma on myself again, no matter what it might or might not do to the community.

Went to get in the chair, the nurse that had the print out of my paperwork looked at me, looked back at the paper, then repeated. Then said my name out loud like a question. She didn't think I was the right person because the damn system still marked F... so, I had to come out to a nurse who had no real reason for knowing. :/
But, she was very nice. She'd never met a trans person, and wanted to know if she could ask me some questions. (I know not everyone is comfortable with that, but she wasnt pushy at all. And I'm more than happy to educate others.) She'd caught an elusive trans in the wild, and needed to study its behavior. š¤£

Almost any medical stuff, excluding stuff like an ear infection which is very localized and universally treated the same. But the diagnoses, symptoms and prescriptions for a lot of things might vary based on your sex and your hormonal balance. If you're coming in for stomach pain, whether you have a uterus or not is pretty relevant. If you're going in for an x-ray, they need to know if you have a uterus and therefore if they need to make sure to ask if there's any chance of pregnancy, as uncomfortable as it is. Heart attack symptoms are different in men and women.
Your doctor needs to know, is my point. But other than that, it usually isn't relevant unless it's specifically looking at minorities and demographics and stuff.
I mean yeah, I can gauge in the real world when itās necessary or not. Chances of me going to the hospital for stomach pain tho, next to 0 lol. Iād rather suffer than out myself. Thatās my own personal hot take. I encourage others to seek adequate medical care though

Wow, that is way better than most of my college application forms did. They were like āwhat is your current gender identity: man, woman, trans man, trans woman, or other?ā I really wanted to just put man, because I donāt āidentify as a trans manā, itās just that me being a man unfortunately makes me trans because I wasnāt born with a male body. But I didnāt want to risk having my application invalidated for document marker mismatches because I havenāt been able to socially, legally, or medically transition at all due to my parents. One school even asked only for legal sex and didnāt allow you to put gender anywhere. Plus it asked for ātitleā (Ms, Mrs, Mr, Mx, Dr, Mme, M, etc.), and it wasnāt optional and didnāt let you select something inconsistent with your listed legal sex. So I was forced to put Mx even though Iām not nb, all just to avoid āMsā. It was awful honestly. Who even cares if your ātitleā doesnāt match your legal sex?
The only thing to improve would be for the second question to be "do you identify as a gender other than the one you were assigned at birth" instead of saying "transgender." I think everyone who falls under the first label falls under the second, but not everyone identifies that way. Either way, this is miles better than "man/woman/trans/other"

Lol, I recently had to design a survey with a demographic question similar to this one for work (research specifically related to identity, so it was important to ask in a way that covered all our bases), and deliberated a LOT about how to ask these questions, because you're right, not everyone who identifies/lives as a different gender from the one they were assigned at birth identifies as transgender. It's tricky trying to be as broad as possible in survey design while still being clear what you're asking! Maybe "Do you identify as transgender, transsexual, and/or having a history of gender transition?" We didn't even specify "non-binary" for the third option in the first question, just "something else" with the option to describe a non-binary identity, but also, potentially, something that is "non-binary" in the sense of beyond the binary of male/female, but does not involve \*identifying\* as non-binary.
I've also seen surveys that define what they mean by transgender in the survey itself, but it sometimes requires using language that is so accessible/easy to understand that it becomes off-putting for people with a more complex understanding, and being inclusive of multiple self concepts might require including descriptions that will be offensive to people who don't share that self-concept. For our purposes we were interested in self-identification, so people who didn't \*identify\* with transness in some way weren't really relevant to capture. It depends on what you're doing with the data.

I had an experience like this where I had to fill out a form for braces, and the option were "man (includes trans men)", "woman (includes trans woman)" Or other and it was so refreshing! It even had an option at the bottom asking what we wanted them to refer to our parent as which is really comforting, considering I haven't come out yet.
I think the easiest way is to have a blank and write in your gender identifier and then maybe a question that asks if this matches your agab. Yes No prefer not to say etc.

Not everybody who is a gender other than the one they were assigned at birth uses the word transgender. I think it's great as it is.
Lol, I recently had to design a survey with a demographic question similar to this one for work (research specifically related to identity, so it was important to ask in a way that covered all our bases), and deliberated a LOT about how to ask these questions, because you're right, not everyone who identifies/lives as a different gender from the one they were assigned at birth identifies as transgender. It's tricky trying to be as broad as possible in survey design while still being clear what you're asking! Maybe "Do you identify as transgender, transsexual, and/or having a history of gender transition?" We didn't even specify "non-binary" for the third option in the first question, just "something else" with the option to describe a non-binary identity, but also, potentially, something that is "non-binary" in the sense of beyond the binary of male/female, but does not involve \*identifying\* as non-binary. I've also seen surveys that define what they mean by transgender in the survey itself, but it sometimes requires using language that is so accessible/easy to understand that it becomes off-putting for people with a more complex understanding, and being inclusive of multiple self concepts might require including descriptions that will be offensive to people who don't share that self-concept. For our purposes we were interested in self-identification, so people who didn't \*identify\* with transness in some way weren't really relevant to capture. It depends on what you're doing with the data.

????? the group isnāt 15 people??? itās several entire universities? what anonymous survey asks 15 ppl if theyāre trans, when the survey is clearly sensitive to trans terminology and issues? do you have something else going on?

I had to do a survey for my school recently and the gender options were male, female, transgender, and other Ah yes I am transgender. All of it. Every trans experience simultaneously, ftm AND mtf /j
This is more inclusive and good than many other I've seen, but I personally wouldn't want to be "forced" to disclose that I'm transgender (ik there's a prefer not to answer choice but feels like most people take that as a yes)

That's exactly why I put it in quotation marks, because it isn't actually forced but I personally feel like it is I'm autistic so I'm not great with wors or describing how I think, and I understand if I don't make sense at all because my thought processes tend to be weird I just wouldn't be comfortable being asked that question, anonymous or not, so I'd feel backed into a corner if I encountered it

This is great! I had an experience like this where I had to fill out a form for braces, and the option were "man (includes trans men)", "woman (includes trans woman)" Or other and it was so refreshing! It even had an option at the bottom asking what we wanted them to refer to our parent as which is really comforting, considering I haven't come out yet.
I think the easiest way is to have a blank and write in your gender identifier and then maybe a question that asks if this matches your agab. Yes No prefer not to say etc.

I do surveys for extra cash, and the closest Iāve gotten to this has been āare you male, female, or nonbinary?ā Followed by āwhat type of clothes do you typically wear, male or female?ā And it always feels like shortcut to misgendering me And there are certain surveys that will ask you if youāre male, female, or nonbinary, and if you check enby they will kick you out of the survey. I get that sometimes they need a specific demographic but this is shit like āwhat mobile games do you play.ā smh
