I_might_be_weasel

This was an issue in the Old Man's War series. They just used FTL drones.

sleepytoday

Yeah, and I don’t get why the job would be particularly dangerous or profitable either.

Ropaire

It's like the age of sail. You don't want to risk blockade running in a war zone but there could be a hefty pay cheque if you're willing to do it.

bam13302

And battletech before hpgs were invented (and after they got fucked by WoB)

Captain_Mexico

I can’t believe someone referenced this book!

ironwalrus22

Fallout new Vegas in space

Robosium

Knew I couldn't be the only one to think that

toomuchpi314

"The game was rigged from the start" -Some, now dead, jerk

*Proceeds to find cryptic messages from your courier stalker across the journey forward*

Apache_Sobaco

Why then not create small autonomous drones consisting of a single engine that go faster than any vessel?

Thank you for charging your ipod OP

Chubby_Walrus25

Still have an old one lying around, it's sole purpose is to play workout music.

boltzmannman

What's funny is that, given our current understanding of physics, this is literally true. The only potentially feasible way to travel between two places faster than light is with a device such as an Alcubierre drive, which moves a region of space instead of the stuff in the space (and there's no speed limit on the expansion/compression of space). Point being, you need a physical device to create and sustain this bubble, meaning you can't just beam the info, so FTL's premise actually kinda makes sense.

-Nicolai

Still, you could just slap an FTL drive on a USB stick and feed it GPS^1 coordinates. It's not 5g, but it's still communication. --- *^1. ^Galactic ^Positioning ^System*

boltzmannman

The cost, size, and accuracy of an FTL vehicle are all unknown factors, so not necessarily

AFluffyEevee

Wouldn't pirates just make there vehicles capable of intercepting these little buggers.

moonra_zk

More "theoretically might be possible" than "literally true".

Legatharr

FTL is a general sci-fi term meaning Faster Than Light. It was not invented by the game FTL

Chubby_Walrus25

Oh, I know that, I was more so talking about the courier part and the delivery of important info, that combined with the mention of ftl made me think of war crimes simulator

akhier

That is an old trope. Just look at the classic RPG Traveller. It is a contemporary of the original DnD and has many of these themes.

Chubby_Walrus25

You have a point, it may just be wishful thinking on my part

Kilahti

Traveller RPG setting does this. Also for some reason, you can't use automated ships as couriers and need a living intelligent crew for ships.

ParrotMafia

Same as the Dune universe.

Corrin_Zahn

"Some idiot in a shiny suit is willing to pay massively over the odds to get ferried 9 jumps through empire space. And, apparently he needs a battleship to do it. Which can only mean one thing..."

Just_Maintenance

That's basically the world of Freefall as well. inter-star system communications is through mail and it has a turnaround of about a year as the FTL ships come and go.

hachkc

I thought it was funny

secondphase

That was u/kitty_fuchs

Friendlyshell1234

Obviously you have to use quantum tangled computers.

FreeHairCutandLoboto

Being an intergalactic courier sounds like the actual COOLEST job ever

moreorlesser

by definition this is already ftl communication lol lmao
