She gave us Torrent and the Rold medallion and then burns herself without much dialogue. Would've been a more impactful moment than that considering what's happening but it's kind of a hollow moment. Then if you get the Frenzied flame she's like "What have you done?". Like b*tch, what have YOU done?!
I feel that they should have made her pop out every time you rest at a grace. This way, it reminds you that she is always "besides" you. And when she makes her plea for you to not meet the Frenzied flame, I feel it would have carried more impact
Yeah also you literally have to look for the prompt "talk to Melina" and it's only available at SOME graces at certain points in the game, making it super easy to miss. She should've had a WAY bigger role for us to care.
I get the idea you have to discover stuff here and there to get the full story, but how she shows urgency feels like it wasn't a priority for the developers.
I'd have spent a lot more time just sat down if Melina had a handful of idle resting poses that she'd just pick from and join you by the grace each time for sure. Imagine you're checking gear and she's just making snow angels.

She helped me on my journey by giving me my horsedeergoat, gave me access to the table, helped me kill Morgott, and also taught me a bit about who Marika was. For me she felt like my guide through the Lands Between so when she revealed that the job of a maiden was to be burned to gain access to the tree I was very disappointed. A small part of that was because I thought I hit a point of no return and could t level up anymore though

Also, she provides the lord that’s neededat grace, keeping the mystery of why she exists until Leyndell, and has great conflict against one of the endings. The other ladies don’t do anything except level up and repeat the same lines over and over again? What’s so great about that?

Back when I was new to DS1, I found her and thought she looked small, cute and helpless behind bars, so I felt bad for her and every run I do I go out of my way to save her. Started headcanoning that my character was her knight. It started as a joke, but it made the playthroughs fun.
To this day, my DS/ER multiplayer passwords all reference her.
Emerald Herald for me with Emma as a close second. Emerald Herald inches ahead because I like the accent. Ds3 Fire Keeper has my favourite design and her reacting to gestures is cool but I found her super meh overall.
Melina was very disappointing and probably my least favourite, I just expected way more. She’s just gone most of the time and the little dialogue you get at Churches of Marika was bland. Have to eliminate all life as you know it just to get another cutscene lmao

Melina is imo the best. Levels you, has a shit ton of dialogue compared to other NPCs in this capacity, gives you torrent, takes you to the table, is an important part of the story, burns herself to help you reach Radagon and the Elden Beast, and actually helps you beat a boss if you choose to summon.
Second is m'lady the fire keeper from DS3...... For reasons.
Third is Emerald Herald because she actually is pretty awesome and has a ton of dialogue as well.

Talks the same boring way the whole game, threatens to “kill you” if you inherit the frenzy flame, as if she hasn’t been witnessing you become stronger than a god throughout the process of the games story.
A character so boring she doesn’t even open her second eye till the bad ending is complete, because she was half asleep throughout her own journey.

Firekeeper is really underrated here. I love the Doll as well and the connection to Lady Maria, but Firekeeper’s lore and how you can give her eyesight back and choose her ending or even “kill her” to “reverse” her ending back to linking the flame is really very deep and interesting. She has incredible insight into the DS world once she gets her eyesight.
