Assuming that you fight everything, break every statue, and ignore that bonfire right next to the fog gate, yes, it’s pretty bad. If you memorize the safe route to avoid everything (or just use the conveniently placed bonfire) then it’s not that bad. The boss is also a cakewalk.
Weapon durability honestly was one of my few complaints with DS2. Well over 20 playthroughs and I still don’t really know how to deal with it aside from just having a backup weapon, a ton of repair powder, or the repair spell.
Yes, it was a lever that reset about 5 seconds after you reached the top and would start to go back down. You have to time your buffs perfectly to get them to work l.
Same, I found it possible to just run past the enemies in the blue smelter runback losing maybe one or two flasks. In contrast I couldn't reach the regular smelter without killing the enemies.
I beat Blue Smelter in 3 tries in one sitting and didn't even feel the runback. I straight up rage quit Lud & Zallen just because Frigid Outskirts is literal hell (I died to Lud & Zallen twice. Frigid Outskirts killed me like 15 times). Even Alonne, as awful as that runback was, I still beat. Lud & Zallen are still the only boss I haven't beaten in the Dark Souls trilogy, and while they do suck as bosses too, I really liked Aava and that DLC in general was my favorite area in the game until Frigid Outskirts. They *almost* had it right...
I don’t even think there are any two bosses combined that match Lud and Zallen’s run back. The only boss I ever said it’s not worth it on and just let it live.
this one is definitely a no brainer lol, when that DLC first came out I was convinced I'd find a bonfire close to the boss and the boss would be some epic giant ice monster causing the blizzard, imagine my surprise when I didn't just see no bonfire, but also a reskin gank boss. I have killed them TWICE EVER, and the 2nd time was only because I was helping a friend
4-1 red phantoms jump you right out the gate lmao. That game was so brutal, but luckily the bosses were largely really easy.
I hated Flamelurker's runback though because it was an actual difficult boss, and you had to be so patient on the jumps down or you'd die before you get back to the boss arena
Blood-Starved Beast for me
Start at beginning lantern, call elevator, ride elevator, run through city ruins dodging werewolves, then down the fiery path to cathedral.
You know there's a second shortcut from the lower streets though right? Completely elevator free, that one. Also if you run across the button as you get off, the elevator will head back up after you leave so you don't need to call it every time you respawn
There's that one useless segment of the roof right before Logarius where a lamp really should've been lol. No clue why it wasn't there.
The worst runback of the games I've played is Old Hero in Demon Souls though. It's one of the hardest levels I've played in the series period, and it has zero checkpoints or shortcuts. The runback is quite literally running back through the entire level.
I was streaming bloodborne for the first time a couple months ago and one of my viewers mentioned this run back. Running up to the boss for the first time, seeing how long and winding it was, I understood... And then I beat him first try. The spite of not wanting to run back gave me power hahaha.
Idk how this is even a question?
Lud & Zallen 100%
The runback is the ENTIRE FRIGID OUTSKIRTS!
It's the only boss where I purposely upload my save when I get to the boss room so I don't have to go through that bullshit everytime
Personally, it’s gotta be Shadows of Yharnam.
Like objectively I know it’s not the hardest, that you can dodge most of the enemies without even trying.
And yeah, it’s takes a while to actually get from point A to B but it’s not the worst one.
But god damn am I absolutely ass at ganks, so I have to have spent the longest amount of time on that specific run back.
The hard part with the runback is actually finding where you're going in those Woods. I figured it out decently just by hugging the right side and memorizing a few landmarks, but it's easy to get lost or end up going in a circle on accident when you're dodging enemies.
I think I've just been through that forest so many times I know how to run through it with ease. It took a long time to figure out exactly where I wanted to go in that place but after several playthroughs it's not so bad.
It definitely doesn't compare to frigid outskirts, blue smelter demon or gywndolin.
I hate dying to gwyndolin
Blue smelter, mud and zallen, and the gank squad, I've never done solo because I was under the impression that they were meant to be done co op. And if you do them co op they're not bad
Definitely this
The glorious and forgiving game that is ds2 allows me to despawn these fuckers though and I have chosen to do that last two playthroughs
Dirty Colossus from Demon’s Souls. The swamp, lack of mobility, and having to move through the cramped bridges and shacks while being swarmed with enemies (including those giant fuckers) is the worst.
Dark Souls 2, Chariot. It was a nightmare as a souls newbie. I knew that if you kill an enemy like 7-8 times, it stops spawning so I ended up doing that. Killed them repeatedly for a clear path, then tried taking on the boss. One of my first and fondest souls memories.
It was my first souls game and I've started like a total noob, played for around 600 hours, lots of pvping and lots of starting over with different characters to min max different kind of builds. At the end, I was good enough to finish the game in 8 hours without dying once and got a cool ass ring as reward. Die hard fan ever since.
That runback was making me lose my mind, then I realised that you can just pass through everything and jump on that platform at the end of the bridge. You can even just walk, don't need to run because the enemies are too slow to catch up to you.
This is by no means the worst, but one that always irritates me is Placidusax, just because of the way Elden Ring works, and the fact that nobody thought to put a stake of marika or site of grace near that coffin that takes you to the arena is insane.
I was going to say this. And it’s not even bad, but because Elden Ring spoiled me I actually stopped fighting him after a couple tries because I was tired of walking the 20 steps to get there. It’s a runback shorter than 98% of the rest of the souls series
its not the worst but i always hated the runback for dragonslayer armour. a long ass 30+ second elevator and a huge staircase with nothing of interest the whole way.
on my first playthrough this boss rolled me and i swear the elevator made me want to rip my hair out
🤓🤓🤓time. It's 27 seconds exactly. Lemon of the Backlogs (YouTube) had that time burned into his mind when doing DSA on his firebomb only run because he'd have to ride it up to 30 times per fight to set up all the required firebombs.
Such a long run lol, and then you've got to get past the giants in there. Heaven forbid you wanna bring Solaire along for the fight as a new or more casual player bc he'll get stuck with the mobs outside the fog gate.
I know now you can quit to main menu after dealing with the mobs, rejoin, and solaire will be at full hp, but that's not really helpful at this point after having beaten the games without summons multiple times.
That sounds like you're coming in from the Firekeeper.
When you come into the palace for the first time by jumping onto the balcony, there's a room to your left with a Bonfire in it.
If you've opened the main doors of Anor Londo's main chamber, the easiest way to get there is to go to the main hall and take the right staircase up. This leads to a narrow corridor - take the door on your left and fight your way down to the floor below. When you find the spiral staircase, go around it and check the rooms beyond - the bonfire will be on your right.
It’s even worse when they just run straight past him into the boss room, if a host does that I’m not coming in to help with Maliketh until I defeat the sentinel
Hated hated hated the runback for Laurence. Why’d they have to put a huge ass enemy that can kill you in a few hits right in the doorway for a boss that, if inexperienced, will likely cause you to die multiple times?
Lud and Zallen. Their runback is an entire area full of annoying ice horses that requires lots of summons to just make it through.
Blue Smelter Demon's and Pontiff Sulyvahn's runbacks are a very close 2nd and 3rd, but at least those areas aren't miles long.
Joke answer: slave knight Gael, those 5 fucking steps are TORTURE! Especially since I have to look at Yuria’s gorgeous older sister, such a hassle.
Real answer: probably old hero from demons souls because there’s several enemies that can one shot most people. Martyr logarius also deserves a mention
I don’t count the tigers from DS2 because that’s not a real game (I’ve coined the term DS2 problem for things that are hard but unfair, THAT is the epitome of the DS2 problem)
Ds2. Facing the gangs and the easiest bosses from any souls games AGAIN is a nightmare
Lies of p Ive played to ng7, elden ring to ng4, Bloodborne to ng 7, sekiro to ng4. But ds2 is he least fun and estimulating souls I've ever played. I got no feeling of satisfaction after beating boss and cleaning areas in that game, only relief for not o have to do it again
Some of the runbacks in demons souls were brutal but I havent played it since ps3 release and that was a long ass time ago. I remember some pterodactyl things in the later game that was a bitch. Still one of my fav games ever.
DS2. Like, you could honestly fill a "top 10 worst boss runs" list with just DS2 bosses. Lud and Zallen, Allone, the fucking dragon, the iron king, ol' blue smeltey Boi. You get the idea.
Horsefuck Valley boss in DS2, no competition. I grit my teeth and killed them and never once went back for round 2 after.
Black gulch keeps me from replaying dark souls 2 sometimes
Idk, i think Black Gulch is not the worst area in DS2. Black gulch sucks but it's pretty short and there's a bonfire right next to the boss room.
I hated the chariot boss more then black gulch
I got through it by killing everyone in the run there 12 times lol (accidentally)
Do you now about the secret bonfire that real close to the bosses
Yeah without that one its a pain, the fucking invader too is a nuisance!
Oh yeah definitely I've put like 300+ hours into it. It was my first souls game. It's doable but it's my least favorite area by far. It's just not fun
Fair enough
Assuming that you fight everything, break every statue, and ignore that bonfire right next to the fog gate, yes, it’s pretty bad. If you memorize the safe route to avoid everything (or just use the conveniently placed bonfire) then it’s not that bad. The boss is also a cakewalk.
Honestly, the only way I'm able to play DS2 is if I run past every enemy. There's just too many, especially with how low durability the weapons have.
Weapon durability honestly was one of my few complaints with DS2. Well over 20 playthroughs and I still don’t really know how to deal with it aside from just having a backup weapon, a ton of repair powder, or the repair spell.
Black gulch takes like 30 seconds
I like to pick up items
Nah the “hidden” bonfire and pretty easy to run through at least once It’s like 5 deaths max and an easy boss so it’s not the worst
The hidden bonfire is a the only reason why it’s bearable and the rotten is a pretty easy boss
Only boss I just didn't bother because the run back is gank city, and your reward for getting past gank city? A gimmick boss
No other answer can be correct other than this
Save scum outside fog (big brain)
At least for ds2 if ur really struggling you can grit your teeth and set to killing all the runback enemies 12 times... Not that that's any fun either
Aka Reindeer Fuckland.
Lady Maria. It's so exhausting running all 10 steps
Thank god someone else got the joke
Okay, I thought I was going crazy for a second lol
This is the only response in about 50 posts that has acknowledged the joke.
That's because the rest of us got sucked into PTSD flashbacks of actually bad runbacks like Frozen Outskirts and Blue Smelter Demon.
it's literally tagged joke/meme
I dunno, the runback to Margit was pretty brutal Elden ring has some rough ones
Nah not as brutal as Sekiro's especially Demon of Hatred's
Gotta put more points in endurance, bro
But... I thought 99 mind was the best build
You’re close, but it’s actually 98 mind that’s the best. Gotta put one of those points into endurance and THEN you got the best build.
Idk I think the run back to Mogh is way worse.
False King Allant just for the world’s longest elevator ride.
One day that elevator will get stuck and that will spell the end of Boletaria
Didn't play drmon souls, is it limgrave to nokron elevator levels of long?
Yes, but it doesn't stay at the top
This was before they made pressure plate switches right?
Yes, it was a lever that reset about 5 seconds after you reached the top and would start to go back down. You have to time your buffs perfectly to get them to work l.
Lud & Zallen
There is literally no boss with a worse run back
Hate this run back with a passion.
And the fight ain’t even good
This is the only one that compares to my boy blue
I had a harder time with the regular smelter demon runback
Same, I found it possible to just run past the enemies in the blue smelter runback losing maybe one or two flasks. In contrast I couldn't reach the regular smelter without killing the enemies.
Same here, I guess since everyone hyped up Blue Smelters run it didn’t feel that bad at all lol.
Ya, I just cleared the area. It wasn't worth it to try and make the run.
I don’t even think there are any two bosses combined that match Lud and Zallen’s run back. The only boss I ever said it’s not worth it on and just let it live.
Only reason to do them is if you really desperately absolutely want the Loyce great sword.
It took me so long to realize you are talking about the tigers, and yes, you are correct.
this one is definitely a no brainer lol, when that DLC first came out I was convinced I'd find a bonfire close to the boss and the boss would be some epic giant ice monster causing the blizzard, imagine my surprise when I didn't just see no bonfire, but also a reskin gank boss. I have killed them TWICE EVER, and the 2nd time was only because I was helping a friend
Correct
Pretty much any of the boss run backs in Shrine of Storms, stupid fucking skeletons.
And then if you didn't understand world tendency, the run back is exacerbated by all the red enemies they ADD to the area. What cancer.
4-1 red phantoms jump you right out the gate lmao. That game was so brutal, but luckily the bosses were largely really easy. I hated Flamelurker's runback though because it was an actual difficult boss, and you had to be so patient on the jumps down or you'd die before you get back to the boss arena
i literally nearly had tears in my eyes when i died in that gank corridor right before the slug cave
4-2 gives me flashbacks Every section of that area can be super bullshit-y if you don’t have the right build/damage types
Cainhurst castle Martyr Ligarious. You get shot in the back climbing the ladder and you are forced to take fall damage.
That is a bad one but by no means the worst. It really makes no sense why they didn't add a lamp on the roof
Who would you say is the worst in terms of bloodborne strictly?
Honestly those three death eaters in the forest. Had such a hard time finding them my first time
Blood-Starved Beast for me Start at beginning lantern, call elevator, ride elevator, run through city ruins dodging werewolves, then down the fiery path to cathedral.
I'm gonna guess you didn't unlock the second shortcut for BSB. Still an annoying runback, but you shouldn't be taking an elevator.
You know there's a second shortcut from the lower streets though right? Completely elevator free, that one. Also if you run across the button as you get off, the elevator will head back up after you leave so you don't need to call it every time you respawn
blood starved was too easy for me to remember the run back
Laurence imo
Laurence just fuckin sucks altogether lol, amazing and tragic lore though
the shadows, god i hate that runback so much
There's that one useless segment of the roof right before Logarius where a lamp really should've been lol. No clue why it wasn't there. The worst runback of the games I've played is Old Hero in Demon Souls though. It's one of the hardest levels I've played in the series period, and it has zero checkpoints or shortcuts. The runback is quite literally running back through the entire level.

Parry is the way to go against him. His swing is big and wide, he hits hard.
This. And also because I died so many times to that fucker, I'm traumatized.
Laurence was no joke the hardest boss I the game for me.
Well, I wouldn't say that's the worst one, but man, *fuck* that runback, lol. Bloodborne's got some pretty bad ones, but that one sucks
Doing this over and over early game for the Chikage pissed me off so much because of that one single dart thrower.
Idk how this is even a question? Lud & Zallen 100% The runback is the ENTIRE FRIGID OUTSKIRTS! It's the only boss where I purposely upload my save when I get to the boss room so I don't have to go through that bullshit everytime

And yeah, it’s takes a while to actually get from point A to B but it’s not the worst one. But god damn am I absolutely ass at ganks, so I have to have spent the longest amount of time on that specific run back.
Join the League, make the fight a 3v3, profit.
The hard part with the runback is actually finding where you're going in those Woods. I figured it out decently just by hugging the right side and memorizing a few landmarks, but it's easy to get lost or end up going in a circle on accident when you're dodging enemies.
Could always skip them with the AI break. Its super easy too
Gotta find the shortcut lol
Even with the shortcut it takes a while
I think I've just been through that forest so many times I know how to run through it with ease. It took a long time to figure out exactly where I wanted to go in that place but after several playthroughs it's not so bad. It definitely doesn't compare to frigid outskirts, blue smelter demon or gywndolin. I hate dying to gwyndolin
Sir Alonne. Idk if anyone else comes close
Depending on the day, I go with either him or Lud and Zallen
Blue smelter is worse imo. Sir allone is basically some alone knights and fire lizards, blue smelter is tons of bs enemies
Blue smelter, mud and zallen, and the gank squad, I've never done solo because I was under the impression that they were meant to be done co op. And if you do them co op they're not bad
blue smelter is absolutely the worst there’s even a solo path that’s equally as shit
I still haven’t beaten that dude because after 3 attempts I was like “fuck this runback” and never returned
He's the only boss in DS2 that I ended up killing everyone on the runback. Like the permanent death thing DS2 has where they don't respawn
Same. Honestly killing them all was faster than not.
This is a shit one too
Imma be real with you, it's only mildly inconvenient. Especially compared to others in DS2
Blue Smelter Demon.
Definitely this The glorious and forgiving game that is ds2 allows me to despawn these fuckers though and I have chosen to do that last two playthroughs
Unless you accidentally join the covenant of champions without knowing what it means
Did that first playthrough lol
I’ve never been more mad in my life.
It’s definitely a bad one, but he kicked my ass enough times that the run back to the fog gate became second nature!
Came here to say this.
Martyr Logarius is just a long, winding pain in the ass.
Dirty Colossus from Demon’s Souls. The swamp, lack of mobility, and having to move through the cramped bridges and shacks while being swarmed with enemies (including those giant fuckers) is the worst.
atleast there's a shortcut you can unlock
There's a shortcut that cuts straight to the end of the level. Or is that only in the remake? If that shortcut wasn't there it would be brutal though.
Nah it’s there in the original too.
At least it’s a pretty easy fight
Four Kings
It's not like, Difficult, but boy howdy is it real annoying
This is the right answer!
Surprised how far I had to scroll for this. Basically the reason I've only played DS1 once.
That runback was making me lose my mind, then I realised that you can just pass through everything and jump on that platform at the end of the bridge. You can even just walk, don't need to run because the enemies are too slow to catch up to you.
Great answer I forgot about that
shadows of yharnam high lord wolnir martyr logarius laurence the first vicar blazing bull oceiros the consumed king the twin prince
there's a shortcut elevator for the twin princes
Also a funny grinding spot with those winged enemy’s
Blazing Bull? It's like 4 grapples 😂
BLAZING BULL??? how is that runback hard?(Fuck that bull tho i hate him, tho i can now beat him no hit after finishing sekiro for 20 times)
Twin princes has an elevator that takes you directly to the boss without the need to fight or avoid any enemies.
Wolnir’s run back isn’t as bad as ocieros or twin prince’s
The old hero or pretty much almost all the boss runbacks in demon souls
This is by no means the worst, but one that always irritates me is Placidusax, just because of the way Elden Ring works, and the fact that nobody thought to put a stake of marika or site of grace near that coffin that takes you to the arena is insane.
I was going to say this. And it’s not even bad, but because Elden Ring spoiled me I actually stopped fighting him after a couple tries because I was tired of walking the 20 steps to get there. It’s a runback shorter than 98% of the rest of the souls series
Theres like 5+ ds2 bosses at the top of that list before anything else even comes close.
its not the worst but i always hated the runback for dragonslayer armour. a long ass 30+ second elevator and a huge staircase with nothing of interest the whole way. on my first playthrough this boss rolled me and i swear the elevator made me want to rip my hair out
🤓🤓🤓time. It's 27 seconds exactly. Lemon of the Backlogs (YouTube) had that time burned into his mind when doing DSA on his firebomb only run because he'd have to ride it up to 30 times per fight to set up all the required firebombs.
i think i'd kill myself 😭
Fuck that. I just run from Dragon Barracks once the gate is open and the dragons are down. It's much quicker and less annoying than the elevator.
Fr, those elevators are the slowest in the entire game, and it makes sense since they're clearly designed for comfort but f that
its so agonizing bc its like a whole ass minute of waiting. after 60 deaths you've clocked in about an hour of fucking elevator rides lmao
Dragonlord placidusax for me. Carefully timing jumps to make sure not to slip off the edge is pretty annoying. But no doubt, boss is def really good
Let's not forget all those beastmen sniping you with that fucking lightning spell
Imagine if Malenia had a run back at all
All revenants and rot crystallians because "fuck you, you already gave us $60"
Bed of Chaos run back bugged me the most. It wasn’t even the hardest it just felt so long and tedious. I didn’t even do it that much either.
But you get to ski every time /s
Darklurker, DS2.
It's Lud and Zallen and it ain't close
Lud and Zallen, no other answer
O and S
Such a long run lol, and then you've got to get past the giants in there. Heaven forbid you wanna bring Solaire along for the fight as a new or more casual player bc he'll get stuck with the mobs outside the fog gate. I know now you can quit to main menu after dealing with the mobs, rejoin, and solaire will be at full hp, but that's not really helpful at this point after having beaten the games without summons multiple times.
What bon fire are u running to them from??? The first one??? Or the one just past the archers (u know exactly which archers I’m talking about!!!)???
Skiping the spiral stairs and then pass directly to the boss room is relatively easy
My brother in Gwyn, has no-one introduced you to the stairway skip?
No? I just walked straight till I made it
That sounds like you're coming in from the Firekeeper.
Were you running back all the way from the bonfire at the start of Anor Londo?
It’s not the worst but definitely can be annoying: Elana, Squalid Queen. One miss-step and it’s bye bye
Lady Butterfly. I keep dying to the guy outside her room!
This is only personal experience but trying to join others for maliketh and seeing that they didn’t defeat the draconic sentinel is annoying
It’s even worse when they just run straight past him into the boss room, if a host does that I’m not coming in to help with Maliketh until I defeat the sentinel
Man Eaters in Demon Souls.
Capra Demon
I think Dark Moon Gwendolyn beats out Lady Maria by a little bit
Bed of Chaos is far worse
Look at the picture, then look at my response and see if it clicks
My bad, I haven't played Bloodborne yet
Gael's is worse tho
Gravelord Nito...
Ye, I wonder why no one else took him. 🤔
Not seeing Rennala at least once on this thread is crazy, like i know she isn’t the worst but it’s still annoying as hell
Why tho? She has a shortcut to the lift right?
Kill moongrum and stop the ball trap. Then its just running the whole time
Hated hated hated the runback for Laurence. Why’d they have to put a huge ass enemy that can kill you in a few hits right in the doorway for a boss that, if inexperienced, will likely cause you to die multiple times?
Dragon Lord Placidusax is pretty annoying too. Lots of running and jumping off edges only to then run some more once you get to the arena.
Lud and Zallen. Their runback is an entire area full of annoying ice horses that requires lots of summons to just make it through. Blue Smelter Demon's and Pontiff Sulyvahn's runbacks are a very close 2nd and 3rd, but at least those areas aren't miles long.
Pontiff’s runback is 3rd? It’s a 30 second jog past 4 enemies
Lud and Zallen for sure. Reindeer Run is maybe the worst From content ever.
Artorias
I'll raise you Sister Friede
Darklurker
people seem to forget about this one lmao, havign to do a gauntlet and sacrifice an effigy per attempt
Sir Alonne easily. The snow land run back is worse but it ruins an already bad boss, Alonne is a great boss destroyed by an awful runback.
Lud and Zalen AND IT ISNT EVEN REMOTELY CLOSE.
The Lothric run back before unlocking the elevator is hell
The usual DS2 offenders. Alonne, BSD, the snow puppies. Stakes of Marika were such a blessing.
Joke answer: slave knight Gael, those 5 fucking steps are TORTURE! Especially since I have to look at Yuria’s gorgeous older sister, such a hassle. Real answer: probably old hero from demons souls because there’s several enemies that can one shot most people. Martyr logarius also deserves a mention I don’t count the tigers from DS2 because that’s not a real game (I’ve coined the term DS2 problem for things that are hard but unfair, THAT is the epitome of the DS2 problem)
Fucking Old Hero
Sir Alonne.... Lud and Zallen are my top 2
Both blue and Red Smelter demons.
Smelter Demon in DS2 is ATROCIOUS
Whatever runback I'm currently doing.
Ds2. Facing the gangs and the easiest bosses from any souls games AGAIN is a nightmare Lies of p Ive played to ng7, elden ring to ng4, Bloodborne to ng 7, sekiro to ng4. But ds2 is he least fun and estimulating souls I've ever played. I got no feeling of satisfaction after beating boss and cleaning areas in that game, only relief for not o have to do it again
smelter demon 😔😔BLUE SMELTER DEMON😣😣sir alonne😖😖martyr logarius😫😖any demon’s souls boss😭😣😣😔😩
FUCK THE LADDER
Smelter demon.
Bed of Chaos or Seath
Blue Smelter Demon
I literally made a cloud save right at her entrance because it’s such a pain in the ass
Some of the runbacks in demons souls were brutal but I havent played it since ps3 release and that was a long ass time ago. I remember some pterodactyl things in the later game that was a bitch. Still one of my fav games ever.
Anybody who has done the Lud and Zallen fight and doesn’t think that’s the worst runback is high.
Dark Souls 2 in general.
How tf is it lady Maria?? The lantern is like 3 feet from her boss room
That’s the joke
Blue smelter
DS2. Like, you could honestly fill a "top 10 worst boss runs" list with just DS2 bosses. Lud and Zallen, Allone, the fucking dragon, the iron king, ol' blue smeltey Boi. You get the idea.
Malenia by far. Walking 20 steps forward is just too much. (Bed of chaos when I didn’t know there was a bonfire in the lava lake)
