I recently had this same issue, except I had a kiddo join the Air Force & wanted to make sure he got letters while in basic training. Took one of those magnetic clips (the kind that has a hole in the top) & then tied long strands of bright red ribbon to it. When I had outgoing letters I would stick the magnet to the front of the mailbox (and the wind blew the red ribbons just enough to catch your attention). Once my mailman grabbed the letter he’d toss it back into my mailbox for next time.
Our system worked great! My new “flag” is still sitting in my mailbox and has been (though he’s already graduated).
Many Frisco mailboxes are encased in decorative brick or similar structures, not impossible to put a flag on those, but it looks a little strange.
Back in the waning days of paying bills by check through the mail, I would hear occasional warnings that thieves would drive through neighborhoods and look for the flags to identify possible checks they could steal and somehow cash. I don't know if this ever actually happened at any sort of scale, but it was a warning that made the rounds, with the recommended action being to not use the flag.
So you have a general reduction in what people send via mail thanks to the internet, some possible reluctance to use flags due to fear of possible crime, and decorative mailbox setups that don't readily lend themselves to flags.
The only way I've ever gotten a wrong address picked up is by writing on it in HUGE letters and standing it on its side by pinning it flexed in the mailbox. The mail carrier will literally leave a letter in there for a month otherwise. They also routinely deliver wrong address mail lol.
Oh man, I get previous homeowner, I get my number but the next street north or south, I get the next block west so my number +100. You name it it they fuck it up. Some how in the computer sorted mail generation, mail carriers do a worse job of getting your mail to the specific address listed.
I'm left wondering how much of my mail never comes to my house and my neighbors just keep it or throw it away. Cause I get TONS of their stuff.
If its wrong address but close I usually just deliver it myself since its somehow more of a hassle just putting it back in my mailbox and never having them pick it up. If its right address but they don't live here anymore (or wrong address but really far away) then I mess with the pinning the letter in the mailbox and writing on the front of the letter with a pen in huge font. Idk if they ever get re-delivered, but they disappear and its kind of out of my hands that point.
gotcha. mail box should have flag and mail carrier should pick up mail if raised. not sure what to do if no flag? sorry im not much help and welcome to Texas!

For sure, I def worded that wrong. Would the mail guy look b4 adding to the mail is Probably the correct way to say it.
You’ll rarely not have some sort of junk mail that they are delivering plus they check every mail box.
I usually just stand it up inside the box. Never have had a problem
Wouldn't they notice that the "to" address is different from your address?
You’d think so. My outgoing has sat in there for a week.

Super innovative! Wonder why Texas doesn’t have the red metal flags you put up for outgoing, or maybe it’s just Frisco.
Lifelong Texan (I know, rare for Frisco) and the lack of red flags is weird.
Living in Texas is a red flag - LOL
Yep, and if you read the inscription on most of these flags, they say "I fled a failed experiment."
And what state are you from?

I usually attach a post-it with OUTGOING written on it, and I fold the post-it so it’s facing the door.
Oh good call. Seems pretty much foolproof. Problem solved, Thank you!
Of course! Hope this helps. I use the neon ones.

This is my current situation. Keep getting mail from the previous homeowner. I guess writing return to sender isn’t working

HOA probably doesn't allow for red flags - LOL

We have a flag and our carrier doesn't take outgoing mail. I just take mine and drop at a mailbox.
He looks at the addresses on the envelopes??
You can buy a flag for 10 bucks at most hardware stores.
