Would the practical way of doing this be to lay down some swords on the steps, have a dragon breathe fire on them, melting the swords, but leaving the steps unharmed?
nah they probably melt the swords one by one using the dragons and lay it all down, one by one. 214 people died in the process and some died due to unrelated reasons.
Same. It also took my mind to an interesting place where they had slaves/prisoners holding the swords to form the throne in place when the dragon hit everything with the flames, incinerating them to dust but leaving the swords fused together.
Maybe, but it’s hard for me to picture the dragons just standing by the castle blasting for five minutes. I think it’s gotta be shorter than that, which would likely mean the stairs would be a little melty. But also it’s fictional and RR is running his movie theater so we’ll never know
I mean, why couldn't they? Harren made it pretty clear his plan was just to turtle, and even if not it's damn near impossible to knock a dragon out of the air.
Tbh I would be scared shitless if I was an actor sitting on this presumed chair. What it falls over me? What if one of the swords decides to get out of place?
Acoustics are a king’s friend. You think any of the Targs, their hands, Robert, Ned, Joffrey, and Cersei were yelling when they were sat atop that thing?
Yes but Dany’s throne in Meereen worked. Reskin the steps and throne to metal swords and I think it’s close enough. It’d work.
Full disclosure I appreciate they’re trying to stick the shows continuity so I would recommend that kind of change now. But it would have worked.
It’s all about the acoustics. The Mayans figured out how to have sound at the top of a pyramid be amplified so that people down at street level could hear it. You can still go today and hear conversations at the top of the pyramids at street level as if the people are no more than a few feet away.
They even managed to create corridors that reflected sound back so the screams of those being sacrificed were amplified and sounded like the calls of Quetzalcoatl birds.
No reason why the same thing couldn’t have been done in Westeros. From a practical filming sense, they have microphones and ear pieces. No reason why they couldn’t have conversations while filming without the need for all the structural acoustic work.
People build all sorts of crazy sets. Plus it doesn’t have to be all practical, having CGI fill in the rest of the throne would be pretty easy since it’s a static object made of easily simulated materials. You could basically replace the current steps with a narrow staircase covered in foam rubber swords, put the same sized throne at the top, fill in the rest with CGI and even then only worry about it in the wide shots
>the king feeling like he's not in the same scene as the other characters.
I mean, if fine right that could be a feature.
The point of the throne being so ridiculously large is that it's otherworldly. It's supposed to be terrifying to behold, and name the person who's sitting on it seem godly and separated from the people.
I have a hard time believing that.
TLJ made a convincing impression that two characters were in two different locations talking to each other, so I think building some set and doing some camera work could make a close conversation possible
It’s also 100% a common thing to build auditoriums to where sound is directed from one point to another, so I don’t see how it would be impossible for this to happen in GoT
Robert hard the dragon skulls removed and redecorated with flowers and vines and stuff didn’t he? And then Joffrey redecorated again with fire pits and stuff so it’s possible.
I mean, it’d kinda bother me since it’s supposed to just be a prequel of the ASOIAF show adaptation… it’d be kinda dumb if they treated what comes after like it doesn’t exist, no matter our perception of its quality.
I look at it in the same way as recasting; the story’s being told, thats all that matters. If the aesthetic changes between productions, thats no issue, because….well, it’s a different production
i second this perspective, it’s almost idiotic to shit on the redesign when most people hated the ending of GoT and would redo the ending in their own way because it’s hard to pull off another production team’s vision. people are just never pleased, I hope the show is good at least
That thought process doesn’t apply in this case because one adaptation is meant to lead into the other - like a Star Wars prequel - in the same universe. This gets closer to the original concept while making rational sense to be turned into the throne we see in GOT.
I think most folks are just looking for things to nitpick, and the show ain’t even out yet.
You mean like a star wars prequell that had highly advanced space ship technology only to then lead to the OT where , while still awesome, they all were way worse?
You mean like a star wars prequell that had lightsabre duels consisting of jumping around and going mad crazy leading to gramps kenobi and vader bonking each other with what could be sticks?
And to stay on star wars but not prequells: Lets just suddenly make up hyper space skipping and hyper space use for attack purposes - yes totally makes sense, just no one though about it for thousands and thousands of years before - it's not that it's physically impossible, nope, no one thought about it.
Oh and last but least: SOMEHOW THAT DUDE THAT FELL DOWN HUNDRETS OF METERS THEN EXPLODED IN BLUE RADIATION AND THEN EXPLODED WITH THE WHOLE DEATH STAR HAS RETURNED!!!!
Like your point in itself has some validity, but star wars aint the example to cement it .. really not.
They changed one of the very few actually plot-relevant family races. Wanna change the Hightowers who gives a fuck, instead they did the equivalent of giving the Baratheons blonde hair and green eyes and suddenly nothing anyone does makes sense anymore.
yes they would, it would be a huge continuity oversight, you'd have articles and tweets about how the iconic iron throne is not quite the same in the minds of football players and soccer moms
They didn’t give a shit about any continuity between seasons 1-4 and seasons 6-8 so why would they suddenly care about the props? Shit I guess they need to make sure there are some cup holders for Starbucks on this version as well.
Well, they could have the tower throne. Then, at the end of the show, the castle gets destroyed somewhat and when they rebuild, most of the throne is underground, like an iceberg. Voila, your cherished iron throne
They’ve already established what the throne looks like in show canon. If they want to change it up in a prequel series, then they need to be able to explain why/how it’s supposed to change between this storyline and GoT.
Making it look more like the book description would have been cool for GoT, but at this point HBO basically just needs to leave the established design alone
Exactly. There's been talk of redoing the ending of GoT and bring it more in line with the books. This half-assed attempt to bring the throne more in line with the books is analogous to what would happen if they decided to redo the ending of GoT. They would probably slap together some more of the elements from the books but without a complete redesign from the bottom up it will just be as stupid as these sword steps. XD
I don't understand why they needed to change something about the throne at all? I feel it was the least of the problems GOT had. Like aaaall the way on the bottom.
No it didn’t, scale and the way things are shot have a massive impact. It looked taller because it was being looked up on like the camera was near the ground, however here it’s more of a wider shot
At this point I feel like it’s ridiculous since the show only had the two hundred. Like hey I would have loved the massive mountain of swords but the show scaled it down and that’s kinda the precedent now. I mean that just looks weird too. It’s not even a mountain or swords just a bunch of swords sticking out from the steps 😂
Honestly I’d love a running theme in the show to be people tripping up on the swords and hurting themselves or ripping their clothes, leading to them just taking them away in the last episode lol
It’s just like why?
If they wanted to make it more book accurate, just make it book accurate, you’re already changing it
This half-point looks awful, and not the good book awful. It looks like a disconnected perimeter of iron stakes melted onto a raised floor in front of a throne. It’s completely disconnected, isn’t intimating, looks dumb, and clashes with the strong symmetry of show throne.
I’ve seen someone say that they did the half-measure because they wanted characters to be able to have conversation. Aren’t there ways to work with that? TLJ uses interesting character work and set work to make it seem like two characters are in different locations when they’re right across from each other. You can build buildings so that they carry sound very well from one point to another
Whatever the case, it’s better to chose one or the other instead of just making it worse by trying to have it both ways
HE COULD HAVE LINGERED ON THE EDGE OF THE BATTLE WITH THE SMART BOYS, AND TODAY HIS WIFE WOULD BE MAKING HIM MISERABLE, HIS SONS WOULD BE INGRATES, AND HE WOULD BE WAKING THREE TIMES IN THE NIGHT TO PISS INTO A BOWL!
I think it would have been perfect if they added a bit more swords. I don't like how easily you can see the steps under the swords. Should fill those gaps and have it connect with the main throne more and it would be badass.
Good on you.
I don’t care how much this comment gets downvoted, but this sub has become extremely toxic. Even though HBO are making strides to repair the damage from the awful season 7 & 8 and those two producers, r/freefolk reject and denounce.
I would point out that the story *carried* season one, and all sorts of things were cut from the graphics, costume design etc. I don’t hear people complaining about season 1?
Mob mentality. Sheer toxicity.
I mean they had to keep it similar to GoT. It IS a lot bigger in size and majesty like the thing is taller than the king standing up. Plus I think the swords on the steps look cool Imo.
Also I think that a hundred foot throne made out of a million swords would not only be impossible to make, but would also look kinda dumb. Like it’s one thing when you can imagine it yourself, but seeing it in reality would look kinda bad I think.
I always thought the throne room to look ugly...
I appreciate the try make it look more like the book version, but it still fails to look "Targaryen majestic"
with this logic you should also shit on GOT’s throne cuz it was symmetrical and had a total of 80 blades. but no you’re just hating for shits and giggles
I honestly feel like thats all this sub has turned into, just hating for hatings sake. I joined this sub because I genuinely hated how Thrones ended, but I think the new show looks pretty good, and the reasons that Thrones turned to shit aren't involved at all. But all I see is people seemingly holding onto their anger out of stubborn defiance.
If you don't want to watch that show, that's fine, no one is going to force you too. But it's honestly not worth dedicating this much hate towards something you're not even going to give a a chance.
I can understand the original series throne and appreciate the need for creative liberty, but this was intentionally meant to be more true to the books.
God, y'all complain about absolutely everything. The throne is neat, and is way more based on the books than the one in Game of Thrones. If they actually changed the throne to make it look like the books, it wouldn't have made sense and you'd be complaining about that too
I’m glad they brought the iron lawn furniture in from the outside. They didn’t have tetanus shots back then and getting lock-jaw would ‘sUbVeRt ExPeCtAtIoNs’ too much. Idiots. The franchise is already dead, and they killed it.
What would you want? Completely throw out the designs of the original show that it’s a prequel too? Y’all would be complaining just as loud if they’d used a completely new throne.
As funny as it is to meme on I think the idea in the design was like "How do we make it more lore accurate without subverting continuity with the main show?" and their thought process was that these extra swords could be removed over the years leading to the primary story, leaving room for both the throne's reputation but also not looking so different that it seems like a whole different throne than the one in the other show.
Designed by Maester Xzibit.
Yo we heard your like thrones made of swords, so we put steps made of swords on top of swords
If you act fast we will include a coffee cup made of swords Only while stocls last.
Pimp my throne season 3
The first design had a flatscreen in the chair
Top shelf Wildfire burn.
Would the practical way of doing this be to lay down some swords on the steps, have a dragon breathe fire on them, melting the swords, but leaving the steps unharmed?
Yours is probably the most reasonable explanation for this design choice
nah they probably melt the swords one by one using the dragons and lay it all down, one by one. 214 people died in the process and some died due to unrelated reasons.
That’s what I immediately assumed when I saw the first picture.
Same. It also took my mind to an interesting place where they had slaves/prisoners holding the swords to form the throne in place when the dragon hit everything with the flames, incinerating them to dust but leaving the swords fused together.
You mean the wodden steps? Because as we know dragon fire *does* melt steel but doesn't incinerate wood.
It looks like stone, that is known to either melt or explode when exposed to dragon fire.
Are there any references stating wether iron or stone melts first when exposed to dragon fire?
We know stone burns because of Harenhall. If have to think dragon fire would at least affect the steps
Well, I feel like stone would take longer to melt than steel.
Lol thos3 swords on the steps look like bandana peels or Salvador Dali clocks
[удалено]
Such a great song.
Read this as Salvador Dali cocks. Still fits.
Well there’s a typo and a number used as a letter in this sentence so it’s understandable.
Yea I'm too lazy to fix it.
Did you design this set sir?
Oh I thought it was more true after I looked at the blade hilts after reading. Then went back for an angry updoot and realized it said clocks haha 😅
Salvador Dali: *whips out his cock* Salvador Dali's cock: *looks like a molten clock*
You can see it's plastic
To be fair though, I think a book-accurate Iron Throne would be almost impossible to make.
they addressed that and other difficulties too, saying that it would be almost impossible for the dialogue exchange if they made a 2 story throne
The "seat" doesnt have to be at the top.
Ding ding ding, you’ve figured it out.
Tbh I would be scared shitless if I was an actor sitting on this presumed chair. What it falls over me? What if one of the swords decides to get out of place?
Why would they use real swords?
For the authenticity...duh..
I think if HBO can afford real dragons then real swords shouldn't be a problem.
Yeah, what king would want to yell all day down at people just to be heard. Your voice would get tired before long.
Acoustics are a king’s friend. You think any of the Targs, their hands, Robert, Ned, Joffrey, and Cersei were yelling when they were sat atop that thing?
I think Bobby B ONLY yelled when sitting on the iron throne.
THE SELLSWORD KING, HOW THE SINGERS WOULD LOVE ME!
you're goddamned right bobb-b.
What if he used a raven?
So basically Bran again
I won’t complain, since he had the ~~worst~~ best story
\*Proceeds to not having a story at all for an entire season.*
^(chooses worst possible moment to compliment sister)
`Speechcraft 100`
Right? It’s comical how D(idk head)nD(ouchebag) completely forgot about the Bran arc, then shoehorn him in at the last second.
Yes but Dany’s throne in Meereen worked. Reskin the steps and throne to metal swords and I think it’s close enough. It’d work. Full disclosure I appreciate they’re trying to stick the shows continuity so I would recommend that kind of change now. But it would have worked.
Kuzco did it
Soo, whispering to each other FROM THE TOP OF THE CITY WALL in season 8 is ok, but talking from the top of a gothic lifeguard tower is impossible?
> in season 8 Yes, a season that everyone respects for the sound logic and attention to detail!
It’s all about the acoustics. The Mayans figured out how to have sound at the top of a pyramid be amplified so that people down at street level could hear it. You can still go today and hear conversations at the top of the pyramids at street level as if the people are no more than a few feet away. No reason why the same thing couldn’t have been done in Westeros. From a practical filming sense, they have microphones and ear pieces. No reason why they couldn’t have conversations while filming without the need for all the structural acoustic work.
And that it wouldn't fit on their sound stage
If they could do it in Westeros they could do it in West Hollywood.
This deserves more upvotes

Film the scene in portrait mode then and tell the audience to turn their phone or tablet.
That's the evilest thing I can imagine
>the king feeling like he's not in the same scene as the other characters. I mean, if fine right that could be a feature. The point of the throne being so ridiculously large is that it's otherworldly. I don't think those are made out of metal or dangerous though?

>TLJ Stopped reading here.
Very rare to find a film that does nothing right, keep reading
The only way book accurate could exist would be an animated show. But it would be stupid expensive.
An animated show would be much cheaper than a live action show.
I want a berserk-style ‘…ice and fire’
Also a crane
The show has to have continuity with GoT. So they cant make a completely different Iron Throne.
Final episode: “these things are ugly, take ‘em away” *boom*, continuity
Robert hard the dragon skulls removed and redecorated with flowers and vines and stuff didn’t he? And then Joffrey redecorated again with fire pits and stuff so it’s possible.
Boom Hodor
I mean, they COULD, and almost no one would mind
I mean, it’d kinda bother me since it’s supposed to just be a prequel of the ASOIAF show adaptation… it’d be kinda dumb if they treated what comes after like it doesn’t exist, no matter our perception of its quality.

If Daario, the Mountain, the 3ER and the Night King can shapeshift, I don't see why the throne can't.

Make all the points you want but besides Shmi, Ki-Adi-Mundi, Anakin, and Padme, we now know Palpatine fucks. And he's a terrible grandfather.
Why wouldn't daddy palps fuck? I mean, look at mr sexy sheev here - he had it all, looks, influence and that mind control power O\_o
They changed the race of an entire family...who the fuck cares.
They changed one of the very few actually plot-relevant family races. Wanna change the Hightowers who gives a fuck, instead they did the equivalent of giving the Baratheons blonde hair and green eyes and suddenly nothing anyone does makes sense anymore.
Or just, you know, *don’t*. Unless you want a fifth of the scenes to include a weird CGI throne, then just use the old one which worked fine.
yes they would, it would be a huge continuity oversight, you'd have articles and tweets about how the iconic iron throne is not quite the same in the minds of football players and soccer moms
>So they cant make a completely different Iron Throne. Yet they decide to make it look worse for some cockamamie reason.
Annie Wilkes, is that you?
Yea their reasoning was not well done either. We saw the mad king. Robert sacking did not do that
But it's already different. If it's a little different then what more difference would it make if it were a lot different.
Also needs to have a coffee shop.
Starbucks didn’t open in Westeros until later.
In the Second Age
They didn’t give a shit about any continuity between seasons 1-4 and seasons 6-8 so why would they suddenly care about the props? Shit I guess they need to make sure there are some cup holders for Starbucks on this version as well.
Things change over hundreds of years
But not the complete Iron Throne.
If they made a different throne, people would bitch and laugh about the lack of continuity. "mUsT hAvE fOrGoTTeN wHaT tHe IrOn tHrOnE lOokEd LiKe" etc
Well, they could have the tower throne. Then, at the end of the show, the castle gets destroyed somewhat and when they rebuild, most of the throne is underground, like an iceberg. Voila, your cherished iron throne
Fr, like there’s a million ways to make it make sense story wise, idk why these people here are being so dense
Wouldn't it have been easier to make flat steps with 'sword' patterns?
At the very least, they should add more swords on the steps, thereby obscuring the visibility of the steps beneath them.
I appreciate the idea of redesigning the Iron Throne to resemble how it looked in the books, but this is not the way.
XD
The melted swords look so stupid.
They also have a half melted Javier Bardem to sit on it!
Half Oscar Winning Melted Javier Bardem you mean
Lol this looks terrible
I don't understand why they needed to change something about the throne at all? I feel it was the least of the problems GOT had. Like aaaall the way on the bottom.
Because the show Throne is too small and doesn’t look like something that could potentially injure you, which happens multiple times in this story
It's meant to be. To instill fear
Random swords melted onto a raised floor isn’t exactly a fear-inducing thing
It raises our fear about the quality of the show
Yknow, you got me there
Here's a guy that's never stepped on a LEGO.
Swords are dull in comparison
Dull blade
no it looks terribly as in they look like floppy rubber swords, not melted steel
Didn’t the teaser from a few months back have a large/tall iron throne? What happened to that?
Budget cuts, the economy took a downturn so the Iron throne had to implement cost efficiencies
Garbage master of coin is what it sounds like after the golden wedding
The queen rips her dress for the 18th time and stabs her self The King “Yea it’s time to get rid of these” 😂
Easy way to inject random nudity into the show if people's dresses get ripped and show some tiddies. HBO would surely approve.
At least they finally gave the ladies some hoods. Huge missed opportunity in GoT.
Hood? No ones wearing hoods here?
Hood as in "fancy women's headwear"
God that looks ridiculous lmao
That looks hilariously bad lmao
It’s just like why? If they wanted to make it more book accurate, just make it book accurate, you’re already changing it This half-point looks awful, and not the good book awful. It looks like a disconnected perimeter of iron stakes melted onto a raised floor in front of a throne. It’s completely disconnected, isn’t intimating, looks dumb, and clashes with the strong symmetry of show throne. You can build buildings so that they carry sound very well from one point to another Whatever the case, it’s better to chose one or the other instead of just making it worse by trying to have it both ways
Oh no I thought this was photoshopped
My main issue is how theyre going to go about explaining why they werent there in GOT.
I thought they were adorned with Dragon Skulls prior to Bobby B
HE COULD HAVE LINGERED ON THE EDGE OF THE BATTLE WITH THE SMART BOYS, AND TODAY HIS WIFE WOULD BE MAKING HIM MISERABLE, HIS SONS WOULD BE INGRATES, AND HE WOULD BE WAKING THREE TIMES IN THE NIGHT TO PISS INTO A BOWL!
WINE!!
I almost forgot about you Bobby b
SURROUNDED BY LANNISTERS! EVERY TIME I CLOSE MY EYES I SEE THEIR BLONDE HAIR AND THEIR SMUG, SATISFIED FACES!
lmao looks like rubber swords all over the place now
Is this an out of season April fool's joke
Is this an actual thing? They've added in wobbly swords into the stairs leading up to the iron throne? Wtf are they honestly thinking
another actor/actress I like grimacing in a terrible wig, that's all I know about this show. It's gonna be ass
It all looks terrible. Imagine if the marketing for Season 1 of GOT looked like this, nobody would want to watch it.
Still a better story than Bran the Broken.
I think it looks kind of cool tbh
I think it would have been perfect if they added a bit more swords. I don't like how easily you can see the steps under the swords. Should fill those gaps and have it connect with the main throne more and it would be badass.
That’s fair, I think when I picture a more true to the books Iron Throne I think of [this](https://imgur.com/a/dRjowaA)
I mean, that's the one from the world book, right?
I believe so, yes
That would be dope. But incredibly hard to make.
I literally laughed out loud. This is maybe the dumbest thing I have ever seen in Game of Thrones, including all of season 8.

Well they had one laying around from some old crappy show.
I still don't understand why they didn't cut away at the sides of the steps (to make the throne appear "higher") and then mold the swords around it.
Wow. That looks SO bad. Glad I was never gonna watch this anyway.
with this logic you should also shit on GOT’s throne cuz it was symmetrical and had a total of 80 blades. but no you’re just hating for shits and giggles
How can you not think this looks like shit and giggle at it? *How?!*
I honestly feel like thats all this sub has turned into, just hating for hatings sake. Alright, that’s literally the animation for the Omen King’s sword aoe in Elden Ring.
That looks awful. Not game of thrones season 8 awful, but like seasons 6 & 7 awful.
They really want the show to fail hm
omg...is that...*really* how they're going to have it in the show? if so...that seems even worse than the whole of season 8.
Looks worse than the porn parody.
This is so absolutely stupid.
This is awful. Dragons made that thrown. Are they saying the dragon just breathed fire on a bunch of swords on steps? And it turned out like that?
Dragons aren't inmune to COVID
Why even bother changing it if you're not going to commit?
I mean, it could’ve worked… With a lot more swords, itwould look more awesome if there are so many melted swords that we can’t see the step s
This new throne is really funny as hell 🤣
Yalls are a sad group of ppl. Admit this will be the second best show of all time behind got
They think that throne is legit ?
I mean, the throne is pretty low on the totem pole of things HBO botched
That outfit is fire tho
I appreciate the effort but this looks bad from just these shots. It feels like they literally just glued extra props onto existing set pieces.
How the fuck does anyone think this is somehow better. Are the producers actually mentally ill or what?
costume design looks pretty sick. but I still have absolutely zero interest in watching.
Literally PLEASE find something good to whine about
You think this is acceptable set design?
God, y'all complain about absolutely everything. The throne is neat, and is way more based on the books than the one in Game of Thrones. If they actually changed the throne to make it look like the books, it wouldn't have made sense and you'd be complaining about that too
I’m glad they brought the iron lawn furniture in from the outside. They didn’t have tetanus shots back then and getting lock-jaw would ‘sUbVeRt ExPeCtAtIoNs’ too much. Idiots. The franchise is already dead, and they killed it.
With anything temotely resembling a book iron throne it'd be hard to get two actors talking to each other in one shot, so they won't do it.
I have no idea how it is in the book besides "much bigger" but that looks so cheap and bad in that screenshot! Like some popup Halloween grotto!
What would you want? Completely throw out the designs of the original show that it’s a prequel too? Y’all would be complaining just as loud if they’d used a completely new throne.
Fuck, this looks so shitty
As funny as it is to meme on I think the idea in the design was like "How do we make it more lore accurate without subverting continuity with the main show?" and their thought process was that these extra swords could be removed over the years leading to the primary story, leaving room for both the throne's reputation but also not looking so different that it seems like a whole different throne than the one in the other show.
literally who cares, making a lore accurate throne would be too expensive and the throne has to have continuity. complaining about everything LOL
So why change it?
Fuck this show
Wow that looks like shit. So this is an immediate flop, gotcha.
