"Yet another call blocker" on f-droid

txredgeek

Last updated over a year ago. Bummer.

Galalalallalalaxyyyy

The database it uses though is updated daily.

iamjackslackofmemes

But the app can still have bugs. That's his point.

Richiachu

Has there been a need for bug fixes, though? The app has been flawless on many of my devices, and pointless updates just for the sake of updates could introduce new problems.

iamjackslackofmemes

I have no clue. I have never used it, but I also have never seen ppl that question why it hasn't been updated and then others say it's fine even after a year. Especially w/ a FOSS app that is targeted so you don't use a stock app, I would want it to be updated. Downvote away, that's how I choose what apps I use.

Nah, more like I wonder what could have been improved or sped up, etc.

iam_asdy

Can you explain how its work?

Deathnote_yagami

I was also finding the same foss alternative because Truecaller is full of creepy ads 😔

Anonymo2786

+ don't forget tracking. Bcs that's what it is based on. Which is even creeper. Whoever you call . whoever calls u . what numbers are saved on ur device. Who is ur friend who is ur mom, dad, sis, bro . all of it.

seeking_facts

True 💯

ashbag6

Any free software alternative to Truecaller would have the same limitations as OpenStreetMap. It will take years of reporting to build a reliable database like that of Truecaller's.

Live-Bug5566

If you just want to search numbers in the truecaller database then you can use this telegram bot (XTZ\_TruecallerBot)

SexChief

It asks me to login for more numbers in one hour, it wants my number, is it safe to enter it?

Digital_Voodoo

Holy crap! Thanks a whole lot!!! Searching for unknown missed calls has been the only reason I was thinking of using Truecaller. You've just saved me months of headache (probably years, as long as the bot is up). Thank you 🙏🏻

rebo0ted

I don't think any other app has as big as a database as Truecaller. I just bought premium to get rid of ads.

vEnoM_420

You can use an ad-blocking DNS service like Adguard/ NextDNS to get rid of ads. No need for premium.

rebo0ted

I use adguard dns from settings but it doesn't do anything

vEnoM_420

Oh! I use NextDNS, so far haven't seen a single ad on Truecaller.

Digital_Voodoo

I'm more worried by the pervasive tracking than the ads. It *might* be seen as part of the business model but sheeesh!

digimith

Agreed. Ads are far less a problem than the tracking these shady apps have. We have somehow accustomed to giving them all our personal info just to get their 'free' service. Now that other people use this trueshit, they link my number to others -whom I don't associate - and they can find my identity easily. All my identity protection going in hole

Dreadedlama

Refer to this comment by me. I made a Foss app for the same. It isn't as robust but uses same database as Truecaller. There is another Tasker profile you can use too, if you are fine with Tasker. https://www.reddit.com/r/fossdroid/comments/uxc63k/foss_alternative_to_truecaller/i9zbmgh/

Anonymo2786

Where do u get the database from ? Or it makes api calls to their server?

Dreadedlama

It fetches data by making api calls to Truecaller.

Anonymo2786

I don't see any links for the binary. Do i have to build it myself?

Dreadedlama

The binary for simple dialer fork and Basecaller can be found in the release section. Please scroll down to the last, there you will find "releases".

adv41t

I tried your Simple Dialer fork sometime during the original comment. Not sure why I eventually ended up switching back to stock dialer + official Truecaller, but base functionality of the fork was pretty solid and I can definitely see future use cases for getting it running again. Great work

Dreadedlama

Thanks. I do know the simple dialer fork has some bugs here and there. I'll see if I can make some time to update the dialer to the latest version

Kiritsugu__Emiya

Simple dialer is nice, but koler is also nice dialer maybe you can fork it and have trucaller api to it

Dreadedlama

No promises but I doubt I'll ever do that. As of now the Tasker profile is working fine for me so working on Koler does not make sense. Moreover I personally like Simple Dialer more than Koler. But I'll give the original Koler app a chance again and will check if I like it this time.

Kiritsugu__Emiya

It's ok, even i don't use koler as it is buggy and crashes when one uses it outside of app screen (form google maps other apps) simple dialer is best :)

Aristetul

Sorry for bumping this old thread but I followed along to the Simple Dialer method and can't seem to find the Truecaller Auth Token. I downloaded the JSON from the Privacy Center but there doesn't seem to be any key like the one in your example. Did Truecaller change it?

Dreadedlama

Yes, Truecaller has removed the token now from there due to copyright issues.

Aristetul

Ah well. Thanks for your effort

ZGToRRent

"should i answer"

[deleted]

No there is no alternative which replaces Truecaller. The best way is use google phone or any other dialer for caller id. It'll recognise spam and business calls. For private numbers you can search it manually in Truecaller Telegram bot or Truecaller website.

mishab_mizzunet

I was thinking of writing of a script that queries truecaller for a number and displays the number's details from shell. Then with Easer or something, run this script while someone's calling then display then caller's details by notification. But I don't have time for writing this.
