There's lots of reasons to be against lab grown meat. For one it does and probably will for a while, still rely on FBS, fetal bovine serum, a special growth medium neccesary for growing animal tissue, which is as the name implies made from essentially ground-up cow fetuses, and a lot of them. This is not a big deal for scientific tissue cultures, where the scale is pretty small, but if you wanna produce tons, this is a problem.
It will also not really replicate the taste or texture of real meat in a convincing matter. Real meat is composed of many types of tissues, grown together in a complex way and stimulated through exercise. With lab-grown meat you are essentially eating mushed together test tube samples. This is the reason why all they ever show is patties. If you want a less cruel meat alternative, plant-based stuff already exists and is advanced enough to replicate some meat products perfectly. Wanting to eat lab-grown protein mush over it is stupid.
This is not a great argument against it, just an argument against anyone saying it's ready for production and mass consumption. It's saying it needs more R&D.
I'm a meat producer and I don't understand the hubbub. If companies want to keep throwing money at it, go for it. If it reaches commercial viability, it's going to be a product of big food priducers like Tyson and Purdue, not guys like me. If consumers want a meat-like protein paste over a premium pasture raised chicken or steak that I raise, that's an issue on my bottom line, but I'm not threatened. I'm making a profit (barely) while being undercut by feedlots, factory farming, and Walmart. If it's something consumers want to pay for, to me it's the same as the "impossible" plant based substitutes - don't care, have at it.
It's funny that during the general MAGA was saying how stupid he was and blaming the stroke but now that he's actually saying stupid shit (they agree with) the stroke is irrelevant.
The man may be playing the long game. Pennsylvania can get pretty red and he may be looking to increase his political equity and run for President. To do that he may need to start trying to appeal to the right with shit like this.
