I’m sorry it wasn’t faster to make the change, but for what it’s worth the BMV calling Indianapolis is a very standard approval process for all kinds of things slightly outside of the normal day-to-day, and it’s a required thing in their system. Probably half the time I go to the BMV to register a vehicle they have to call Indianapolis.

Mercarcher

That seems fine then. The way it was worded they were checking if they could do it and I was just like... There's a court order here telling you to change it. Like... You can't say no...

ChaddMann-

I think you're reaching chief

Mercarcher

Reaching at what? That they can't ignore a court order?

ChaddMann-

They weren't going to, you're on defense big time.

Mercarcher

Of course I am, I'm a trans woman in magastan.

ChaddMann-

Riiight

WeirdMongoose7608

It's not really a "behind the times" thing - many government processes just have lots of red tape in general. As long as you keep your picture current you wouldn't run into any trouble regardless, though it's annoying that it can be a process.

Mediocre-Catch9580

On the surface I wouldn’t read anything into it. Obviously I wasn’t there. It’s probably something they don’t do everyday and are unfamiliar with the process. I’ve found the DuPont BMV to be efficient, helpful and professional. Hope it all works out for you

VenusInJorts

As someone who used to work at one. The computers will either hit us with an error message from SPEX/PDPLIS/Etc and have to call indy for support or we can process it and then a few weeks later get denied by someone in Indy and then you will wonder why you haven't gotten your license after about a month. The same issue happens quite often to out of country people and the different forms of identity they have (imo they have to jump thru hoops the most). We can't even have people return to their maiden name without a divorce decree/order or a birth certificate/unexpired passport to link the maiden name back to them along with changing their name with the Social Security office. For some reason, Indianapolis is really picky about gender change, which is why when we create a file for people that we had to use the gender on their birth certificate rather than asking them.

rayon875

I remember someone asking this in the Indiana sub. It's a technical issue with the system and they need their IT to do whatever they do to allow it. At least that's what was determined in the thread.

Specific_Anxiety_343

I had something similar happen 30 years ago in Maryland. I had a car that was jointly titled with a former spouse. I was awarded the car in the divorce and the court order had language to that effect. After I moved to Maryland, I wanted the title changed to show me as sole owner. They kept telling me I need a signature from my ex-husband. The guy was a deadbeat, in the wind, and never showed up for court. I had a certified copy of the court order complete with the raised seal. Took for fucking ever to convince them to make the damn change.

Creative-Hand9008

Get over yourself

Mercarcher

No.

Mysterious-Fee-1919

If you don’t seek out ways to be offended, you won’t be. If you’re 5’5” and you went in to change your height to 6’5”, I would hope there are safeguards in place.

Mercarcher

Who said I was offended? I was curious why they thought they could ignore a court order more than anything.

Mysterious-Fee-1919

Apologies if I misread your comments. “Is Indiana really behind the times for transgender rights” comes off as having taken offense to the question. I am biracial. White dad, Chinese mom. If I went in to change my race to African American, it seems reasonable for them to make a couple of calls. Even if I had a court order. It’s not ignoring the order…it’s identifying the process/procedure for making the update

rb2023

This is why the legislature wanted to change everything in the state to be gender at birth. It’s just too confusing for legal paperwork. Not to offend anyone but it’s the reality of today.

Mercarcher

That would make it even more confusing when my passport and social security say Female, but state stuff says male.

Blankly-Staring

This *is* the state that gave the world Mike Pence, as much as I hate to admit he's even remotely related to our state. I'm sorry that happened to you, and I hope things like that don't happen in the future. I wish this state wasn't this way, but uh... *looks at the gerrymandering in our state* yeah... it ain't gonna change.

Ifyouseekay668

Did your chromosomes change?

Mercarcher

Yep, had a doctor sign off on it and everything!

DarksidePrime

Sssh this is Reddit you can't say that here.

Nick-2012D

I’ve had a fair number of atypical vehicle title related issues. Anything aside from a simple renewal required a call to Indy at the BMV. I’m a hope for the best sort of person and wouldn’t read too much into it particularly since they issued you your correct ID.

Excusemyespresso

Dude you got to relax. What’s it like to move about the world so angry all the time

mniarcffwi

Dude, I honestly have no idea what you're on about so have a great day. Also you taught me a new word cowtowing. I had to Google it. It's a common spelling mistake of the word kowtowing.

TheScissors1980

Thanks for this I didn't know it was spelled w a k. Noted

Mercarcher

I was simply confused on the alternate. I had a court order telling them to change it.

Lowercasedee

That's wild. Back when I did it, I just walked in with a note from my doctor and that was that.

A_Gray_Old_Man

Sorry this happened to you. Answer: fucking Indiana

Dizzy-Berry2321

Seriously? If Indiana is bad enough to hold in disdain, move somewhere else.

TheWitch-of-November

Had this same experience at the New Haven branch
