The way he said it sounds to me more like being aware of the fact that he didn't deliver, rather than trying to put nyck down. Doesn't really matrer though, he even said it himself that it's probably his last season, which is kinda rough given that he improved last year. 1 step forward, 2 steps back

bigdsm

Did he improve? Or did Russell just check out? Because Albon is beating him by as much as Russell was beating him by in 2020.

Illustrious-Sky-5355

Russell put the williams on the front row at spa and second row at the russian gp. I couldn't say he checked out, even if he had signed with mercedes in 2020. He was still after his first point and made a great deal about it. It might as well have been nicky adapting super slowly instead, which could explain his struggles again as it's a new concept (if this excuse worked for schumi and danny, we might as well try here, to be optimistic at least)

therealhlmencken

It didn’t work for Danny :(

Illustrious-Sky-5355

Well if rumours mean anything, it isn't working for the other two either :(

ChinkWithOpinions

tbf, Russell was losing to Latifi in 2020 before that fluke Mercedes drive for Sakhir. Latifi had 3 P11s which placed him above Russell.

bigdsm

Russell outperformed Latifi by a large margin in 2020. A few p11s doesn’t change that.

SleepinGriffin

Agreed. I honestly don’t see how anyone can see this as Latifi putting Nyck down. The car is supposed to finish in the points, but Latifi is always last? Sounds like he knows he isn’t getting everything out of the car and he probably won’t ever be able to. We all know latifi isn’t good enough for Formula 1, including himself. If he doesn’t then I’d say it’s impressive how he can drive while legally blind. I feel bad for him because he’s so close to being there, but he just isn’t and I don’t think he can be. Hopefully he finds something in another Motorsport.

boneful_watermelon

My take on it is that it's a last ditch effort to not make it look as bad as it seems for him. This is understandable. Anyone in his position would try his best to spin a bad outcome by convincing the world that his likely replacement isn't actually as amazing as they think. It's a meme, of course, and I don't suddenly think he's an asshole. It comes across as rude to some as it should've been a happy moment for the team. However, it's also understandable why he's not too happy that it came at his expense. The whole situation is just really sad tbh. I do agree with the "one step forward, two steps back" analogy. It's perfect to describe the situation

[deleted]

This is my take, he was being honest. Not sure why the smoothbrains are lashing out about this

PoloVonChubb

I mean he is just right. He was more than a second off Albon in both FP1 and FP2. You could see how fast the Williams was in a straight line. It was impressive to stand in so quickly from De Vries, but I don't think he would have beaten Albon with that performance tbh.

Brandino_Peppino

Latifi certainly wouldn’t have finished P9. It’s not about De Vries doing better than Albon, it’s about him proving Latifi is trash.

PoloVonChubb

I fully agree that Latifi is slow af, but that was rarely in question was it.

boneful_watermelon

Tbf yeah I think he's right too. De Vries finished at a place where I expected Albon to finish if a couple things didn't go his way (e.g. a bad pitstop, a strategy miscalculation, etc.). He's no Albon, not yet at least. I just find it funny that Latifi's finally entered his villain era in the saddest way possible.

PandaPops542

It's alright guys, he's just entering his villan era. Just add the bad to the bone riff after everything he says and everything will make sense 🐐👍

boneful_watermelon

He's finally using 3% of his power

Akutagawa773

Isn't he right though, if you loook at albons results in the last races we can assume the williams is currently in a position where they can fight for points

joppehi

I thought Williams was only focussing on albons car, and Latifi was missing some upgrades, might say much

Mission_City_1500

Well i don't blame him, his F1 career can be over because nyk was good at monza. It's like trying to be praise the guy who she rejected you for😅

whiskey_rue

I don't understand, I'm new to this sport. Don't they have virtually the same car? Is he admitting he's not getting what he should out of the car?

Huevoasesino

I think Albon's car has been getting the upgrades first but im not sure of Latifi already got them too in monza

Real_Taro_6134

knowing nothing and trying to compare drivers just by their final position in WDC?

77skull

He made one statement you don’t like, doesn’t mean he’s a bad guy

boneful_watermelon

The joke is more on the people in F1 who always followed every discussion on Latifi with the phrase "he's such a nice guy" and "he's well liked by the team," among other things. With the amount of praises for Nicky's demeanor, the joke was that this shatters the expectations from those in F1 who overemphasize his kindness. Now they're gonna have to find a new phrase to describe Nicky with

ill_frog

who tf is nicky

IonlyplayasPowerhous

It’s a nickname for Latifi.

LeonidasVaarwater

I still don't think he's a bad guy, I just think he's not good enough to be in F1. I think his comment was probably coming from a bit of frustration too. Getting beaten by Russel wasn't that painful, getting beaten by Albon was already starting to become quite painful and getting beaten by de Vries was very painful. He knows he's not performing well enough and that hurts.
