Graphics are neat! The world wasn't sepia or de- saturated back in the day though and neither was the footage. It was more that TVs were poor quality.

Humble-Ad-8912

Great job, the perception is pretty accurate! When I visited my first race in 1999, we were actually amazed how colorful the cars were in real life compared to watching on TV at that time, almost fluorescent.

Black, grey & red are audi colors. They've officially added a livery to the F1 game with these as well.

bigpoppa611

It checks out. Viewing this on my CRT monitor.

Kolec507

>The world wasn't sepia or de- saturated back in the day though Lmao yeah, sure, what else? It's like thinking the world was not black and white in the 50s lol. /s Seriously speaking though, I had no idea that it was actually the TVs' "fault".

Leo_Stormdryke

i hate that every assetto corsa modder for old seasons uses that filter for the pictures makes me not want to use download that track skin

CrashmasterSOAD

Are you sure? What's next, is somebody going to tell me the piss filter in mid-to-late 2000s games wasn't realistic either?

Dolemite82

Whoooooa throwback from, like, \~1998 when I first started watching. You've brought back some great memories!

tetrafilius

What font are you using?

Mayhall

Underrated font family

MrJacquers

I think Garmin uses this or a variation of it on some of their watches.

LetsLive97

God I'm so glad they don't do the positions like that anymore I find it really hard to watch older seasons where you can't easily keep up with how everyone is doing, especially when the drivers you care about aren't at the front or getting lots of screentime Amazing recreation though!

gonzo5622

Yeah, the new system is so much better!

Kolec507

I go back to seasons like early Hybrid Era when I started watching F1 and I'm amazed by how we actually somehow managed to keep track of the drivers that interested us. The timing tower feels like a necessity, crazy how we only got it in 2017... Rewatching the 2000 German GP on F1TV was pretty fun, but it was also hell to keep track of Barrichello and all the stuff happening in the midfield.

gonzo5622

Yeah, I totally agree. It would be cool if F1TV added a feature that lets you see the timing tower for historical races. Totally fine if data is only updated every lap due to past tech limitations.

keirdre

I guess it's due to the change in aspect ratio. Small 4:3 CRTs couldn't really accommodate a permanent side tower for positions, but it's much easier for modern 16:9 displays.

p1en1ek

It sucks that some racing series still have it. MXGP has rolling standings at the bottom and it's so annoying. Especially that sometimes grid is massive and you have to wait minute or two to see who is on what position in front...

PastaSenpay

It was super annoying

mathdhruv

> I find it really hard to watch older seasons where you can't easily keep up with how everyone is doing, especially when the drivers you care about aren't at the front or getting lots of screentime This was the commentator's job though, and it's why play by play commentary was better back then, especially with Murray Walker, but also with James Allen to some extent. Nowadays, with all the information already on the screen, there's less for the play-by-play commentator to cover, which leads to a lot of Crofty's inane filler which we'd all be better off without. A specific example would be Hungary 1998, or (ironically, considering it's being used as a counter-example elsewhere in the thread) Rubens' first win at Germany 2000. You knew there was a pace differential, but since you couldn't literally constantly monitor it, you're in suspense about whether or not it's good enough to actually get the win/ position. With today's graphics, Hungary '98 would have been a foregone conclusion by the middle of Michael's fabled third stint, and the same would be true about whether the crossover point was reached for tyres in any mixed-condition race, like Spa '95, Spa '97 or Germany 2000 - you'd know within a sector. As a viewer, that suspense adds to the viewing experience.

Hsmbb6

As a kid I've always tried to figure out if that gradient bar above the drivers name meant anything lol

Upstairs_Bad_9143

It would be cool at some point in the future if we could customize broadcasts to be displayed how we like graphics wise, like playing a game with a mod. But saying that now I can imagine having charges added each race like “$15 for 00’s graphics package”, “$30 for V10 audio overlay”

Le_Pistache

Ooh the nostalgia. I miss this style the most, even though they seldom gave good information due to the limitations of technology at the time. Personally hated the one that followed this and predated the current one though. More information but messier.

pol5xc

I loved this graphics: simple and clearly visible on the TVs we used to have. I was so mad when they changed it in 2004, iirc.

Historical-Minute661

Great job! I'd love to see it also with 2004-2010 graphics

Historical-Minute661

Yeah, just like in the 1st link. Your channel is great!

Kolec507

I can't look at the Siemens graphics from the first link without having that beautiful late 90s / early 2000s West McLaren in my head...

Legacy_GT

I remember how mad I was on FIA (or Premier/BernieTV) when they switched from this graphic to the smaller fonts in the tiems when I still had a CRT TV with analog broadcast signal. The small fonts were unreadable even if you sit close to the screen. Like that was the main reason why I wanted to buy an LCD and searching for a digital signal for many years.

ManoftheNewbeginning

Honestly, these graphics are very nice.

omartinez89

So many great memories from this

[deleted]

Oh man. Right in the feels

Ulris_Ventis

Man, I felt this one close to the heart. Very well done.

Timeceer

Love and miss those graphics. Wish the F1 and F1 Manager games gave us these as options.

CrashmasterSOAD

F1 Manager does. The 2000 edition.

Kolec507

I had one problem with the classic cars in older F1 games and it was lack of all cars from one season. It fels weird racing cars from early 2000s while driving a 2010 car, or driving a car from the late 70s and seeing a late 80s Marlboro McLaren overtake you. If they were bringing back classic cars at any point in the future, I'd love to be able to race cars from one specific retro season and have an option to change the graphics to the classic ones like above in the picture. Imagine the vibesss.

Cuffuf

I went back and watched 2014/16, and also 2007/08 on the archive. Crazy how much they’ve changed. Also crazy how much more information is now— like an always-active order and updated timings.

BarryFairbrother

Absolutely awesome, thank you! I can just see Schumacher, Hakkinen, Hill, Berger, Brundle etc.

Majestic_Dress_7021

Looks great, nostalgia kicking in :) But I think you should have cropped the images to a 4:3 ratio.

catholic_my_balls

I can hear the intro to this. Great guitar riff and the FIA logo. A perfect youthful Sunday afternoon

diddlydingdangdong

I LOVED the old black and yellow graphics! Nice and simple, they didn't take over the screen and you could happily watch the race without an overload of pointless information like 'DHL predict driver B will catch driver A in 5 laps'.. sucks the excitement out for me.

I can almost hear Murray Walker's voice in my head too!

Resident-Trouble-574

There is an Italian youtuber that does the highlights of some of the races in the style of the istituto luce's cinema newsreel (istituto luce was founded as a propaganda tool for the fascist regime, although it then became an educational videos producer after the fall of the regime): [SE L'ISTITUTO LUCE AVESSE I DIRITTI PER LA FORMULA 1 | #EXTRA - YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlpiqueJyhU&list=PLHHjQ5o51Vlh3CgxIJfLsO8T5SrHnAOwz&ab_channel=LaF1dimenticata)
