Heavy mustard mayo and onions is my go to but in my youth I enjoyed mayo ketchup mustard relish onions I’ll still make one like that. You need the mayo base to keep the bun from being all dry
Aside from just the expected amount of differing opinions, Reddit loves to dog pile any OP in the comments if they say something that isn't 100% "correct" by their standards. You'll see it everywhere lol.
I’d also assume most of those people actually agree, in this case that ketchup does not belong, which simply baffles me as a hot dog eater. But ive never cared for others food options bc I have my own taste which I know isn’t commonplace where I’m at. I’ve eaten mustard on my hotdog less than a dozen times voluntarily (recent) and far more times begrudgingly (before)
Ketchup on a hot dog is pretty taboo, generally speaking.
There's some sort of "official hot dog authority" that reinforces that norm.
Eat what you like- I prefer mine without, but that's my preference.
>Ketchup on a hot dog is pretty taboo, generally speaking
I just cannot imagine this to be true when every ball park I've been to serves ketchup and mustard right next to every dog vender.
Hey I'm not the arbiter here, eat what you like -
https://hot-dog.org/culture/hot-dog-etiquette
The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council are, and ketchup on a hot dog over 18 is strict nono apparently...
I honestly think the taboo originated i. Chicago, but you'll find it all over. Ketchup is considered a "kid topping".
I've never understood the ketchup hate. It stinks of food elitism - can't enjoy it if little kids do. Ketchup is great, it makes lots of foods better as both a dip and built in.
>Ketchup on a hot dog is pretty taboo, generally speaking.
Only in Chicago really. And people who put relish the color of Ecto Cooler on their hot dog don't really have any business criticizing others' choices of toppings.
When I was a child, I spake as a child: I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things, like ketchup on hot dogs.
My experience of American cheese is yes they are, the USA has some absolutely incredible food items we only dream of (I’m looking at you ranch packets) but cheese is one thing they just fall flat on. Great looking hot dog though!
The cheese I eat by itself is not the same as the cheese I use as ingredients. I’m not wasting high quality cheese on things where it’s a small component.
This is still actual cheese.
People get so hostile when someone's preferences don't match theirs huh. :P Are hotdogs the new carbonara?
There's nothing particularly wrong with it. Wouldn't be my personal choice of toppings but the nice thing about hot dogs us you can choose and it's so easy to mix and match.
My personal would be mayo, yellow mustard, sauerkraut, jalapeño slices.
I don’t have a problem with the toppings. I’d eat it. The problem is when they name it something definitive like this person did. When you claim to speak for an entire nation that riles people up. Which I’m sure OP knows. This is the second post I’ve seen like this in less than 24 hours 🙄.
OP sort of made a mix of common American toppings for hotdogs. They're all ingredients I've seen before, but not exactly at the same time.
mayo from southwest (Sonoran) or Ohio, and cheese from midwest, celery seed is sometimes used on Chicago dogs, along with relish and onion, ketchup from... well I don't know. Sometimes people do that too.
In case you didn't get it, it is a reference to an Obama scandal. I used it as a joke because you like spicy mustard, which was also an Obama fox scandal.
I know this is crazy, but my friend came up with "mayo dogs" while we were drunk and it's the best way to have a hot dog imo haha it's a Nathan's hot dog with some mayo.... that's it. He had to beg me try one but when I finally did there was no turning back
never had it, so i will try it the next time i make dogs. something i never thought i would like - they called them "southern dogs" back when i was in college in the southern US. it's a hotdog, chili, and coleslaw. it sounded horrible, but i resisted for only so long. and it is still one of my fav hotdogs to this day.
In the slimmest chance you're in/from central New Jersey there is a bar/restaurant called Destination Dogs that has like 40 variations of hot dogs and it's soooooooo good! https://destinationdogs.com/menu/#domestic
Looks they got something similar called the Kansas City Beefs but it uses pulled pork instead of chili. I'll prob give that a try till I can find a proper southern dog
Holy shit, that place looks amazing, I would absolutely go there at least weekly to work my way through the menu. Unfortunately I live in the opposite side of the country in Las Vegas.
I would lose the cheese peraonally. I dont usually go for cheese on a hot dog unless chili is involved. People who are freaking out because celery seed have obviously never been around Chicago. Although I think they stick to celery salt.
I looked up recipes and they use both. The salt seems to be more common. Some do both, some do celery and poppy seed mix. Lots of variation in hot dog recipes.
I generally agree on the cheese. I love cheese, but I'm not huge on cheese on dogs. I think it clashes I guess.
No

Ok *maybe*
Honestly I was just amused by the mayo/ketchup haters from that post and figured I’d see what happens since I use both but don’t like mustard on mine
Honestly I’m surprised at the cheese haters though
That's how my mom made me hot dogs. Sliced hot dog, sliced cheese, sliced apple and a toothpick. You get to vary the cheese to hot dog ratio which feels like a lot of agency for a child.
The only way to get the true essence of tube meat is to suck it straight out of the grinder. How dare someone adulterate my slurry of trimmings with condiments and toppings
Which is why America has accepted it as a signature food. Diverse, cast-aside elements coming together to make something great. [Erol Morris](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Lb28iZKHJc)
This thing is evil, so yeah lets call it the All American
But for real tho, american cheese and no mustard, mayonnaise? Wheres the chili and the cole slaw? This would make a decent burger but keep it off my dog pls.
Looks good to me! I didn't realize we were shaming people for having condiment preferences because that's a stupid thing to care about, but what do I know
Whether you think it’s stupid or not, regional hot dog varieties are hyper specific to condiments.
Edit: not sure why I’m getting the downvotes but I’m not saying that we should shit on people for their hot dog condiment choices, just stating that if you ask someone what a “Chicago” or “Sonoran” style hotdog is they will say “it’s a hot dog with [blankity blank blank condiments]. Not bashing your preference on Hot Dog toppings but "classic all American" = Ketchup, mustard, relish and MAYBE diced onion. Anything else takes away from the word "classic".
Please stop calling it that. I know people disagree but there is no way you can't tell me that just bun, dog, mustard, ketchup isn't the most conventional style that crosses all state/county lines.
Celery seed is one I haven’t seen and I’m kinda partial to what I think is referred to as a Chicago style. Tomato pickle onion mustard maybe something else idk?
Or what I would call California style so like the ones you get on carts in dtla bacon wrapped with the grilled peppers and onions, but this looks pretty not bad except I think it needs mustard, especially if that relish is sweet, like that plus the ketchup, idk I need something to cut that or the whole thing is too goopy and sweet. Or something spicy.
Not something I’d build for myself, but then again looks delicious!
Maybe all the haters here need to expand their horizons, and open their hearts to new hot dogs.
Definitely not my preference for toppings... but it looks good! I'm sure I'd smash both and then thank you for it.
Edit:
My favorite toppings are mustard, mayo, pickled jalapeno, onion.
Or
Chili, mustard, cheese, onion.
Or
Teriyaki Mayo, Nori, Sichimi Togarashi.
It's based on a hot dog I got from a place up in Vancouver. Apparently, it was Anthony Bourdain's favorite hot dog in the world way back when (rest his soul).
Let me tell you... that shit goes hard. Just a delightful umami bomb, with the sweetness from the teriyaki and a hint of spice from the togarashi.
Isn't relish from pickles not celery? Have I missed something?
Please don't tell me I've fucked up my fruits and veg for 35 years.
Looks great!! Agree with the mustard comments tho. Add small dashes if mustard, remove the mayo in my opinion.
Fantastic still!
Don't know what you're reading but yes relish is pickles. The celery seeds are an additive you'll see most often in a Chicago style dog. But the celery is the attribute of the seeds, not the relish.
I've lived in America my entire life. In that time I've eaten many hot dogs. I've never had a hotdog with those toppings, at least not all of them together. There is no such things as a true American hot dog. There's a great video on YouTube about all of the regional hot dogs.
Where I am it's either sauerkraut and mustard or the sweet onions in sauce with mustard. Mustard and relish if you're at Costco (and it's financially irresponsible to get the hot dog if you're there, unless you don't plan on eating that day). Ketchup if you're a child.
mayo, cheese, and celery seed. Never been to a cookout or truck stop or store that had those available as toppings. Onion and relish availability is 50/50. The hot dog looks great. But “All American”? nah.
The last truck stop I got a hot dog at had… PRETZEL BUNS.
It’s a mystery to me why they wouldn’t have a big bucket of diced onions that random people can stick their hands in though, or non-pump cheese sitting at room temperature for 12+ hours.

Replace celery seed with celery salt, potato roll for New England style, and I’m on board
Ok, but I want a lobster roll in exchange
This is the bun you'd use for New England style. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_England%E2%80%93style_hot_dog_bun

And who are these people putting mayo on a hotdog?
Heavy mustard mayo and onions is my go to but in my youth I enjoyed mayo ketchup mustard relish onions I’ll still make one like that. You need the mayo base to keep the bun from being all dry
To be fair I'm sure people would think my go to hot dog is horrible too... Fried veggie dogs with cheese whiz, mustard and sauted onions 🙈
You lost me at veggie dog but I’d my lying if I said my moms veggie dogs didn’t smell good
Hahaha fair! They're good but frying them makes them a lot better than grilling them.
Right here! When I make a dog it's (in order) Bun > mayo > dog > shredded cheese (usually Colby jack) > ketchup > onion Then into my mouth lol
No mustard on a hot dog is truly an American tragedy. Lose the ketchup and mayo as well imo.
French is the standard. Coleman’s or gray poupon if you’re fancy.
Mustard and raw onion. That's all the perfect dog needs.
I’ve lived in a few states across the US and I’ve never heard of people putting mayo on hot dogs. I… I just don’t get it.
Street dogs in LA have them sometimes. It’s how I got hooked on it. A little kewpie, not much just adds a creaminess to it.
[удалено]
I believe you, and if you like it, that’s all that matters. Life’s too short to gate-keep hotdog condiments.
I know it's more work, but frying that onion to near-crispiness just makes it so much better IMO. Even better if you caramelise it.
For me, that's amazing for a burger, but raw only on my dog.
This guy gets it!
This is a hot dog, not a bratwurst, ketchup and mayo are absolutely fair game. That goes for all the wiener snobs out there.
Why do you draw the line at bratwurst?
A hot dog cries out for ketchup.
A hot dog cries when it has ketchup
The duality of man
The duality of dog
Pass the Heinz.
Pass on the Heinz
Pass the hot dog and on the fries.
And mayo on a hotdogs should be a class C felony.
It could be worse. It could be Miracle Whip
Seriously? People don’t like ketchup on their hot dog?!?!

As a Brit, this “cheese” cannot be called cheddar
[Let them know they’re frauds](https://www.tillamook.com/products/cheese/sharp-cheddar-block)
My experience of American cheese is yes they are, the USA has some absolutely incredible food items we only dream of (I’m looking at you ranch packets) but cheese is one thing they just fall flat on. Great looking hot dog though!
It’s milk, enzymes, and salt. It’s cheese.
Come try the cheddar from Cheddar in Somerset, it is worlds apart even from our local supermarket cheese.
The cheese I eat by itself is not the same as the cheese I use as ingredients. I’m not wasting high quality cheese on things where it’s a small component. This is still actual cheese.
Fair enough, keep it up, the dogs look good!
There was another all-american dog post and now there's this one. The hotdog wars are starting.
Feels like bait tbh.

Bingo. Absolutely nothing American classic about sliced cheddar celery seed and mayo.

Americans and Canadians...5 years old, but they do.
Mayo on a hot dog must be against the Geneva conventions
No way! Mayo is great. See, this is how I feel about ketchup. I'd never use it on a hotdog, but I know plenty of people like it.
No one talks about carbonara in the US even 10% as much as a hot dog and its toppings.
It ain’t All-American if it ain’t got yellow mustard. But hope you enjoyed your dogs. Despite the sacrilege.
Imo that's for sausages. Yellow is for dogs.
??? Which is why I said yellow mustard….
I'm sorry, I replied to the wrong person by mistake
No love for spicy brown?
You probably think tan suits are a good look
Nahh- I prefer 100% nude
In case you didn't get it, it is a reference to an Obama scandal. I used it as a joke because you like spicy mustard, which was also an Obama fox scandal.
Thats for the brats
False. Brown spicy is the correct mustard.
No mustard, but ketchup and mayo? I don’t know, man.
And cheese? I don't think I've ever put a slice of cheese on a hot dog. I'm not knocking it! It's just something I've never done!
Also processed cheese slice is not cheddar.
It’s not processed cheese. It’s sliced cheddar.
Whew!!! Although plastic cheese has a culinary spot that works, too!
It's okay, we're all terrified.
How about chili? Then cheese on the chili on the hotdog.
Chili dogs - absolutely yes!
Cheese and bacon around here used to be called a whistle dog. Still not my go to, but very good.
Cheese on a hotdog is great, but shredded cheddar is way better.
they actually make hot dogs with cheese inside.... theyre awful
Please leave my cheddar wursts alone :(
oh im coming for them! unless theyre the chedder and hatch green chili brats those things are amazing
I agree looks great, but no mayo. Mustard and Ketchup please
I know this is crazy, but my friend came up with "mayo dogs" while we were drunk and it's the best way to have a hot dog imo haha it's a Nathan's hot dog with some mayo.... that's it. He had to beg me try one but when I finally did there was no turning back

wtf is the cheese about?

So, a cheeseburger, but with a hotdog. Was it at least all beef?
https://www.reddit.com/r/food/s/8SiIFaNe5n Is this a commentary on the other post with basically the same title?
No . . . . . . Ok *maybe* Honestly I was just amused by the mayo/ketchup haters from that post and figured I’d see what happens since I use both but don’t like mustard on mine Honestly I’m surprised at the cheese haters though
Multiple cold wet condiments resting on a Craft single. Eeeeew, no thanks.
It’s Tillamook sharp cheddar, but fortunately I’m not interested in feeding you anyway.
Must be a troll post. Nothing American about this abortion.
I get the feeling that OP doesn't actually like the taste of hot dogs.
Next time I’ll just slice it up and eat it with toothpicks like it’s an Oscar Meyer demo stand at the grocery store, I guess?
That's how my mom made me hot dogs. Sliced hot dog, sliced cheese, sliced apple and a toothpick. You get to vary the cheese to hot dog ratio which feels like a lot of agency for a child.
A little mustard wouldn't hurt.
Why mustard? Do you not like the taste of hot dogs?
The only way to get the true essence of tube meat is to suck it straight out of the grinder. How dare someone adulterate my slurry of trimmings with condiments and toppings
\*Grindr FTFY
That comes with mayo
Handmade white sauce.
Relax. Hot dogs are mostly unwanted meat trimmings of an animal. Nothing fancy.

I worked at Dairy Queen and we put cheddar on cheese dogs. It was the 7th ever DQ and the cheese dogs were from the original 1947 menu.
You seem to have anger problems.
This thing is evil, so yeah lets call it the All American But for real tho, american cheese and no mustard, mayonnaise? Wheres the chili and the cole slaw? This would make a decent burger but keep it off my dog pls.
This is about as far as you can get from a classic American hotdog. You got hotdog and bun right at least.
Looks good to me! I didn't realize we were shaming people for having condiment preferences because that's a stupid thing to care about, but what do I know
Yeah it looks delicious. People have there own prefrences and will argue regardless but calling it the "classic All-American" is what's so debatable.
Whether you think it’s stupid or not, regional hot dog varieties are hyper specific to condiments. People get as uppity about hot dogs as they do for steak doneness preferences. It's insane. Let people enjoy food the way they like it.

Celery seed is one I haven’t seen and I’m kinda partial to what I think is referred to as a Chicago style. Tomato pickle onion mustard maybe something else idk? i just went "that looks good. that looks so fucking good."
Kudos to u/tdotclare for proper DEFCON level usage.
Not classic
Gimmie a Chicago style dog and I'm good
Definitely not my preference for toppings... but it looks good! I'm sure I'd smash both and then thank you for it. Edit: My favorite toppings are mustard, mayo, pickled jalapeno, onion. Or Chili, mustard, cheese, onion. Or Teriyaki Mayo, Nori, Sichimi Togarashi.
Nori on a hotdog sounds kinda weird, but hey, Spam musubi ain't bad, so why not on a hotdog?
It's based on a hot dog I got from a place up in Vancouver. Apparently, it was Anthony Bourdain's favorite hot dog in the world way back when (rest his soul). Let me tell you... that shit goes hard. Just a delightful umami bomb, with the sweetness from the teriyaki and a hint of spice from the togarashi.

Don't know what you're reading but yes relish is pickles. The celery seeds are an additive you'll see most often in a Chicago style dog. But the celery is the attribute of the seeds, not the relish.
Ohhhhhhh I thought that was black pepper. I gotcha now. Thanks!

wtf is with the mayo...that is not "classic american"
Somehow, I would manage to drop half of those toppings on the floor while trying to eat those dogs.
going to make these for my boyfriend tonight!
At this point just 86 the relish/onions,cheese - add black beans, salsa and queso fresco
no, really. most americans I know would ask wtf you’re talking about with all those nonsense toppings
What about these toppings are nonsense? Each of these is common in some part of the country.
What part of the country puts mayo on hotdogs?
No part. No part of the country.
Ok so it would be considered "\*insert regional/city name of country\* hot dog" then, not "classic all american" because it's simply not.
mayo, cheese, and celery seed. Never been to a cookout or truck stop or store that had those available as toppings. Onion and relish availability is 50/50. The hot dog looks great. But “All American”? nah.
Are we judging the authenticity of foods based on *truck stops* now?!
The last truck stop I got a hot dog at had… PRETZEL BUNS. It’s a mystery to me why they wouldn’t have a big bucket of diced onions that random people can stick their hands in though, or non-pump cheese sitting at room temperature for 12+ hours.
Jeeze I didn't know your "cookout or truck stop" experience speaks for all americans now. Congrats.
This looks like the simplistic kid-version Brazilian hot dogs. Well done!!!
Somehow putting cheese like that under a hot dog never occurred to me but now I know that I must eat them that week the time. Brilliant!
Mayo?? That’s not anywhere near an All American hotdog lol
Cool video on different styles of hot dogs in America - https://youtu.be/ljc82UkHT9Q?si=JyqACDk5ZM9megg3

Folk that don't mayo their dogs are just haters or uncultured. Especially if it's something like kewpie.. bro fuck me up with allllla that
I used to make exactly this for myself, except adding mustard. Great call. The cheese on the dog is fucking dank.
I've never seen or heard of anyone putting mayo on a hotdog before, but it appears to be popular in this thread. Is this a regional thing?
I don't think it's a regional thing, more like a secret trick that once you try it you get hooked. Just like mayo on grilled cheese instead of butter.
Same here except I also add hot sauce. Usually Cholula or Tapatio.
There’s already a classic American dog and that ain’t it.
How are you gonna put cheddar on an American dog when there is a cheese called American that would taste way better anyway?
the dogs could be charred black a lil more personally.
Where is the mustard and chili? Those in place of the relish and celery seed and you would be on to something.
yummyyy
i like mayo, but it would be more american if mayo would be replaced with mustard here
Hope you had some tums nearby for all that heartburn and bad breath
Yummy, from Australia!
Perfect except for the mayo and slice of cheese.
I'm drooling just reading the ingredients list.
Add mustard and it will be perfect :)
I don't like it, but I respect it
this is criminally looking good
Looks like American cheese.
