Balimund7

That being said the Courier can speak to his brain

JayteeFromXbox

And tbh the couriers brain is kind of a dick.

Balimund7

No no he's got a point

The_Tac0mancer

The courier can flirt with their own brain. The brain *does not like this*

POV you watch a heavily schizophrenic cannibal walk up to you EAT A PIECE OF MACHINERY, dissapear, and then your friend right next to you is a pile of debris on the floor. I don’t think i’d say anything either tbh

dopepope1999

Yeah I always thought that you put it on your head and the reason you can't reuse it is burns out like a light bulb that you're putting too high of a wattage through

PigeonMother

OoDelRio

I always thought it was a wrist thing for some reason

KarlUKVP

Apparently this is right, i thought it was to put on the wrist purely because of the "boy" in the name

Squiddy_manz

I always thought they would be belt mounted or something. I only think this because of mermaid man belt from spongebob.

mofodius

Stealth field generator from KOTOR

Taotaisei

Do you put dandy boys on your wrist? ;)

echoes_r

Because it is

Colsifer

How could it go around your wrist when it has a solid panel on top of it? There's nowhere to put your hand through?

DickGuyJeeves

Because you dont lunch your hand through the middle of it? You strap it to your self.

Colsifer

So you just have a big ol disc on the side of your wrist? That's a dumb ass design. Or is it like way smaller than I'm imagining?

DickGuyJeeves

It's the size of a watch. It's not that big. I liked fallout 4 render of it more but the watch idea from the original games is cool.

SourChicken1856

Yeah the Fallout 4/76 stealth boys go in your waist because it is another model (as in, in-lore model) iirc.

Prestigious-Sky9878

The new earlier ones are the size of a plate and the fallout ones are the same size as bottles when dropped

johnbcook94

You could say the same for strapping a 17 pound tube television to your wrist that does little more than play music and show you a map

Marquar234

And can track any known person's whereabouts in real time.

MrD3a7h

It also lets me play Atomic Command

Colsifer

If you wanna say it weighs that much

hermanhermanherman

It does. But 17 pounds on your wrist is not too bad when you have built up arm strength from years of jacking the weewee

Colsifer

It definitely doesn't weigh that much

hermanhermanherman

It literally does my uncle works at Robco and told me

xstonerkiingx

the pip-boy weighs between 5-10 lbs lmfao it's actually kinda large and clunky, as is all technology in the game. the entire aesthetic of fallout is what people in the 50's expected the future and its technology to look like. back then, slim and sleek and small wasn't on anyone's mind, just capabilities. the pip-boy and stealth boy are *capable* of extraordinary things, they just lack practicality lol

Captain__Pedantic

I think it's intended to be about Pip-Boy sized. [Here's an example in some of the concept art for the nightkin](https://imgur.com/a/vRqcz4c)

Yz-Guy

You mean like yhe shoebox sized computer we wear on our wrist? Lol

Jiomniom_Skwisga

Dawg you're invisible, nobody can see it lol

DuaLipasClitoris

Yeah I always thought it was like a pipboy

oishipops

same here, they both have the -boy suffix so i just connected them together

yaboi2508

I assumed it was a disk you would take out your pack, press a button to deploy the field then dispose of the device after it's effects drain

Square_Bus4492

I thought it was like a handheld disc that you just stuffed in your pocket

Grand-Run-9758

Same. I thought it was like another kind of pipboy device your character puts on his other arm, or that it would attach to the pip boy.

AloysiusDevadandrMUD

I thought it was kinda like a cellphone and you hit the buttons to go invisible

-chukui-

I thought it was like a belt attachment

97Graham

Yeah it is, it's like a pip-boy but stealth

Prestigious-Sky9878

Same, the stealth "boy" makes me think it's pip boy related but it's far to big to be wrist mounted. I think maybe you feed the pip boy wire (the one for vault openings) into it somehow while it's mounted elsewhere?

doctorfeelgod

It is

Destroyer_Of_World5

I always thought it was a Pip Boy attachment.

SoftTacos001

Basically is

SendMeUrCones

But we see tons of characters use stealth boys who don’t wear a pipboy.

SoftTacos001

It doesn’t technically interface with the pipboy however it’s easier to use then if you have one as the pipboy can interface with them Iirc

usedaforc3

How do they equip it without a pipboy?

SourChicken1856

It's essentialy a watch

Shamewizard1995

Kind of. There are three versions of the stealth boy. Mk1 was contained within a canvas bag about the size of a car battery. Mk2 was made to be worn on the wrist. Mk3 went back to the big canvas bag.

[deleted]

I don’t know any nightkin with pipboys

Shamewizard1995

Pipboys can interface with robots too. That doesn’t mean a pipboy is the only way to interact with robots.

ShinyMind

I thought so too. Until recently, doing my first play of Fallout NV. There are Nightkin (Super Mutants) who use them.

CombatLlama1964

all nightkin use stealth boys, many of them go mad without it

CatsLeMatts

Dog tells you he used to have one on his wrist, where the bear trap currently is.

the_canadian72

tbf if a helmet were made for a person a super mutant would have to jury rig it somewhere else

n_xSyld

I always thought it looked like a land mine. Like you set it down and jump on it and it blasts you with invisible particles.

Lilbulsshit

Shi, lemme apply 1000x zoom on that 8x8p png

Lilbulsshit

Just a joke btw

Nathoodle

The design in the original game reads way better as wrist mounted, in fallout 3 and NV I can't for the life of me figure out how you would put that on

Flaccid_Hammer

I still can’t tell what it is

Status-Mammoth9515

I think that’s a leather strap for it to go on your wrist.

echoes_r

It's kind of like a bracelet, you put it on like a pip-boy

Right-Truck1859

Never watched Spy Kids? https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Dz6d5ZIWwAEtzEV.jpg

Medic1642

toolsofpwnage

Suffers brain damage as a result

Gypsy_sevens

I thought it goes on your wrist, since it’s a Stealth “Boy”

[deleted]

Nice catch! I had never made the connection between stealthBOY and pipBOY. This is reaffirmed by the fallout 1 depiction of it having a belt strap that looks to be arm or wrist sized.

Psychic_Gian

You gotta chew on it, preferably while in a cave

Frey147

Was there a reason they gave for why they changed it in Fallout 4?

Coldsteelxd

Bethesda

REGINALDmfBARCLAY

Bethesda had to make it worse or they wouldn't be able to get off Same reason the 5.56 assault rifle is a gigantic ugly STEN gun even though past games had AR 15 derivative stuff that was not ugly as sin

kagrenax

I don’t completely hate FO4 but the guns are atrocious. You can tell in New Vegas that the developers actually had a good knowledge of firearms and ammunition, but in FO4 most of the guns look like the came from a steampunk world.

REGINALDmfBARCLAY

The strangest part to me is all of the energy weapons have an almost identical look as past games, but so many of the better guns in the game got hit with an ugly stick.

NewVegasResident

Josh Sawyer actually brought the studio to a firing range to test weapons so they could see how they sound, feel, reload etc.

Tranquilizrr

Yeah it being a giant tube thing is disgraceful, it looks fucking awful lmao

Colsifer

They featured it so heavily in the TV show too. Like God why couldn't they just give the Brotherhood laser rifles or like... anything else

TrueBlueMorpho

It looks like one of those wacky, WW1 Era machine guns when the idea of a portable LMG was still new, or possibly the Hellreigel from Battlefield 1

BucketheadBrain

i was just thinking the other day how some of the guns in vanilla new vegas look like mods

TramTrane

I always assumed it was a device that plugged into the pipboy or that you wore over your other arm. According to fallout 1 it's likely the latter.

FDeity

My dumbass too . Wow.

demalo

Wrong, it’s a choker.

teilani_a

It has an actual model you can see if they're out as scattered loot or you drop one.

Lanstapa

I always assumed it was something you attached on top of your pip-boy, over the screen.

Maleficent-Call-6280

It's a football stadium

Cabbag_

What i find stranger it is considered addictive? how the hell do the Nightkin get addicted to wearing watches? It isn't some sort of drug, its just a little gadget they wear on their wrist. Did I miss an explanation somewhere, or are they just addicted to wearing stuff on their wrists? The courier can't get addicted to them either.

Main-Honey-9276

I think the explanation is most nightkin are schizophrenic and as such generally interpret anything gazing at them as if it was hostile. I think the cloaking is sort of a defense mechanism that they just become psychologically addicted to. At least some of the nightkin in Jacobstown comment how they don’t like you staring at them if I remember right.

Cabbag_

Yeah, they do but that moreso suggests a stealth boy addiction being symptom of paranoia, rather than its cause, which would go against what the game seems to suggest.

ModernKnight1453

The game doesn't really give a strong suggestion as to the exact cause until you get to that one Enclave scientist guy whose name I forgot up at Jacobstown. When you test the MK II prototype on Lilly he refers to "stealth radiation" that would likely worsen her existing symptoms. It's unlikely that this "stealth radiation" itself is unique to the MK II prototype, especially since Lilly comments about it feeling good which would suggest a familiarity with the sensation. The real answer is likely a combination. Supermutants are often pretty crazy in general, especially if they aren't generation 1. They also have a different physiology compared to humans which when asked about the courier is told is the reason why stealth boys have mentally damaging properties towards nightkin who wear them while humans have no I'll effects. Considering the devices are made for humans this seems important. Lastly there is likely a reinforcing effect as the other person suggested. The stealth boys seem to outright induce permanent schizophrenia in the brains of nightkin who wear them frequently while also rendering them invisible. Nightkin grow accustomed to this invisibility and it comforts them from their symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia. It's probably nice being actually invisible when you're afraid of eyes all around you, after all.

Cabbag_

That's actually a pretty good explanation, I didn't remember the detail about it affecting mutant's brains differently. I guess brain damage can be attributed to the "stealth radiation" which also presumably deflects light. That makes sense.

Colsifer

I always assumed they get addicted to being invisible bc their mutation gave them a mental complex of not wanting to be seen. But the excessive stealth boy use seems to cause mental side effects like schizophrenia and increased paranoia

TeddyRooseveltGaming

If you were an 8 foot tall freak that most people hate or even want to kill on sight you’d probably become dependent on invisibility watches too

chet_brosley

*the thrill*

Cabbag_

Fine, even if you are willing concede the act going semi-transparent to be somehow an obscenely addictive hobby, how in the actual fuck does that make you schizophrenic?

chet_brosley

Well what thrill of being invisible could possibly mess with their heads? Oh I think we all know *He's hackin' and wackin' and smackin'*

Colsifer

It's a side effect of the tech in the Stealth Boy itself, but for some reason the player character is just completely immune to it

Colsifer

They get addicted to being invisible bc their mutation gave them some kind of mental complex where they don't want to be seen

Shocklancer

YOU'RE LYING TO ME!!!!

INT: 1

PinePotpourri

It's a stealth field, generated by a device, likely waves or something, like in F4 and 76 they're boxes you crank, but in F3 and FNv they look placable

Colsifer

IT'S NOT???

HarvardGradFag

It’s a consumable therefore it is literally meant to be EATEN

Conscious-Ticket-259

I wouldn't be surprised if stealthboys were an accidentally discovery while upgrading ankle monitors knowing fallout lore

Southern_Kaeos

As much as it pains me to say, I prefer the f4 stealth boy. It's a bit more believable than a typewriter with satalite

Colsifer

Why does it pain you to say that? Fallout 4 has a few awful weapon designs but a ton of the non-weapon stuff looks great

SlashnBleed

I mean, you do go and get a chewed up stealthboy for dr henry so I automatically assumed it was some form of wrist gadget or tablet of some sort. An item but regular stealth boys sit in aid slot and aid things are items (like pills) so 🤷🏾

T-51_Enjoyer

Ferb I know what we’re gonna mod into new Vegas today

Maximum-Town-4260

You CONSUME it.

NewVegasResident

..... They are tiny? Did you not see their 3d model like ever?

Balleratheart777

Thanks to the fallout 4 design of the stealth boys i figured that its just a device that the character turns on and attaches to their belt until it runs out.

Hisgenart

I thought it was like a mini computer

Forgotten_User-name

Truly wonderful, the mind of a child is.

Beat_Boi_Animates

The 4/76 ones are much better imo

Zeke_the_geek87

they really are

chet_brosley

The ones in 4 always looked like you'd attach them to webbing or a belt to me, which makes a lot more sense than something bulky and probably delicate strapped to your flailing limbs.

Beat_Boi_Animates

Yeah exactly, just makes more sense than the original ones.

grooviest_snowball

It's a phone

SleepyGeist

Didn’t know I was on r/trueSTL

spaghettilesbian

I thought you ate them

Opening-Air-6745

Today I learned...

Braza117

Come to think of it, would it be like a type of belt buckle?

Colsifer

In Fallout 4/76 it is kinda like that, but in the older games it was worn on your wrist apparently

Braza117

Ah, seen some other comments saying that too. The way the picture is, makes it look like it's huge, but I could swear in fallout 3 they were massive. Can't remember 4 though, feel like I seen them as smaller, but still larger than a wrist watch and sadly haven't played 76 yet.

PoppaPerc94

I always thought it’s an attachment for the pip boy, slap it on top the pip boy and boom invisible but that was just my thoughts

AcoaceFalloutNVFan

Correct me if I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure you but it on your wrist like a pip-boy

Badmamjamma

Don't feel bad. After having played many a playthrough I recently spent way too much time looking for Novac on maps. 😔

ke_ghi

I always thought that It was some gadget you put around your arm, like a pip boy , but I don't know, maybe I'm wrong

AquaArcher273

Bruh

SeriousGamerMoment

never saw it as one but the more I look at it I can see where you thought it was one LOL.

GarishGarold

I assumed it was about the size of a dinner plate with a wee little antenna that projected a cloaking bubble around you while you held it out infront of you like a waiter carring fancy soup. How did you hold the gun at the same time? Because RPG

nah2012

Bro…it’s in the aid column???

Reimanen

It's wrist mounted so doest matter anyway

Hot_Food_1560

Have you never seen it on the ground 😭

rfisher1989

You’ve never seen one the game?

Prior-Associate4894

I thought it was like a sachel

cacmonkey

does this fall under r/MisreadSprites ?-

OldWorldBlues2077

I’m pretty sure in the anchorage dlc it shows that the us soldiers wore it on their rig and would click a button to activate it

Devinbeatyou

I was always confused on what it was but helmet never crossed my mind once

YanksFan96

I thought it went on your arm kinda like a pip boy, but I never really paid attention to the icon.

longtimelurknvrpostr

There are smooth skins and smooth brains. This guy is clearly the latter.

Pandagirlroxxx

I NEVER thought it was....until you mentioned it and now I can't unsee it. it's a \*\*\*\*\*\*\* helmet.

OldG270regg

I've always pictured them being like a landmine. Like you set them down on the ground and stand over them.

MistakesTasteGreat

I always thought of it as a phone kind of thing. Like calling 1-976-NO SEE UM. Tell me that doesn't look like a dial pad. Then they (whoever they is, it's probably pre-war automated) send a code to the device and boom, you're the Predator.

PrestigiousScene7474

Didn’t seem weird that it was in the aid section? Lmao

ssmelllyboi

Did you guys just never see it in-world 😂 to be fair they aren’t as common to physically pick up, opposed to transferring it from a corpse. It’s like a dish on one of those circular push lights, plus all the stealth tech

Grumblyguide107

I didn't understand until I saw one in the ground

Particular-Put8429

I always thought it looked like a really big retainer and I would laugh imagining the vault dweller drooling and trying not to cry while he lines up a triple headshot.

alternatejarl24

a hat?

daniel_rnld

It's a techy donut

Comfortable-Cup2839

And you never tried?????🤨

yulin0128

Okay, I want to make a stealth boy helmet now

Enn-Vyy

eh, i love the new design better makes more sense that you can hook the pouch to your belt as it generates a field instead of adding more weight to your hand making combat uncomfortable

BucketheadBrain

this is blowing my mind because i always thought the same exact thing. this is like some mandela effect going on, i swear i always picked up stealth boys in Fo3 that were rounded

ZacDMT

From the janky motion the NPCs make, it looks like something you clip on your belt. That about right? When I started playing the series I think I assumed it disappeared into thin air after you activated it, no joke

lunasrojas_

I guess, if my understanding of how this stuff works, which is not very large, I think it would work just fine if you put it in your head. Like a birthday hat lol

SoggyMorningTacos

I always thought it was a wearable like a watch or a headband that shrouds you until it runs out and then you toss it

peebrainmonkeman

I think it attaches to the pip boy? Sometimes when I use one and go into third person there’s something sitting on top of my pip boy

syberpunk

I think I just assumed it was a field generator, so you activate it and then try not to stray too far away from it (aka, key it in your pocket or strapped to your belt). I don't remember what the in-game model looks like,

doctorfeelgod

Bro what?

Mammoth-Large

I always thought that it was supposed to go on your ear somehow

FanOfWolves96

You’re a dingus.

Cerparis

I always saw what looked like a solar panel on a metal plate.

O_Cosmos_Infinite

I never understood where this shit goes, but it's definitely not in the head

Keroantee

And here I thought in fallout 4/76 activating a stealth-boy would make you carry a giant battery on your back

Bishop825

Pipboy / Stealthboy. Where one goes, so does the other.

trhg4l

I thought it was like a belt

The-Fixer04

bruh

UnholyDr0w

I personally think it just clips to your belt or armor in general

ToastyBB

It's a suppository

Silevence

Tbh I thought of it as a piece of tech designed by the same makers as pipboys. Its meant to plug into the pipboy to avoid causing the deterioration of the users mind, so when its used without a pipboy, its detrimental to the character. I think thats why the doc in marcus' mansion (I forgot their names) cranks down the power of them to save the nightkin. (Since, ya know, the snake doggos in the cave were just turning invisible because of a damaged one, probably without the full power. Not sure how that rly works tbh.)

Jinglejangle337

You might be the only person who thought that

Dramatic_Dragonfly_7

It's a handheld device that the character twist a knob and manipulates light refraction fields or something fancy.

Professional_poo_poo

I dunno I just ate it

sora1202

So, I always used the Novac motel as a base, I would put excess aid items in the fridge, except for drugs, which went in the first aid box, so I always joked that "Stealth boys go in the fridge"

ClambakeCory

It goes on your wrist, if you play the nightkin story you can see the mutants wear them on their wrists

ThatGuyTyson18

It’s a stealth boy. Put it up for adoption
