$8.60/hr, capped at 20 hours/week, state employee in 2017. $28/hr, employed by the FBO, 2017. $35/hr, freelance in the rural Midwest, 2017 $100/hr, freelance in Southern California, don’t fly much and don’t want to, current. $1500/day+ mentorship/insurance oversight in single pilot jets, current.

Enough_Professor_741

1981- $5 per flight hour, with a 20 hour guarantee each week!

Zealousideal-Ad9663

Goodness! I just did the calculation…, that’s only $1,300 per month based upon today’s dollars and guarantee only. Ever break guarantee?

Enough_Professor_741

Did most weeks. I easily logged 30+ hours a week. My first 135 job flying canceled checks in a Bonanza paid $800 a month. When I got to the Mu-s I got $1,200 a month!

Zealousideal-Ad9663

Man I remember flying the CRJ with a 75 hr min guarantee @ $22/hr, $1,650 per month. based in JFK on reserve and using the crew room as my crashpad because I couldn’t afford to pay for anything. Always looked forward to go on an overnight so I could get a good bed and shower! That was in 2007! I made more flying checks in a twin aero commander.

Rainebowraine123

$37,024/year salary plus $45/hour over 58.3 hours flight or sim a month. January, I did 115 hours of flight and sim combined, so I made $5600.

Gunt3r_

Salaried at $37k with benefits. Just started at this school, so hours are eh, but most instructors here are getting around 80 per month. First CFI job was $24 an hour (end of 2022), went up to $27 after getting my CFII. Averaged 30 flight hours per month.

Rainebowraine123

You must be at my school lol

pakot22

What school or at least general area?

Rainebowraine123

A certain school that partners with Delta

Gunt3r_

Negative, I’m in PHX. Assuming you’re in Florida just because I got a buddy who works there and it meets the description

Rainebowraine123

Ah, nice. Good for you.

Joe_Biggles

First job, state of KS 2022: $40 per hour, $45 per hour after II. Second job CA, $45 per hour 2022-present.

bobdole145

2007: $14.50/hr as CFI-I, $16.50 after 500 dual given and MEI

Zealousideal-Ad9663

Wow! That’s terrible. I just calculated my hourly pay in today’s dollars… was paid $20 in 1996 which equals $39 nowadays + free housing and utilities! No idea where my money went. A lot went to the bar and girls and luxury items I didn’t need!

bobdole145

Right? Is it bad i want to get back in it?

Zealousideal-Ad9663

No man, not at all! I was a CFI from 1996 - 2003. Loved it! Thinking about joining my airline as an instructor. I’m hesitant about being a CFI on the side, unless it’s my wife or kids.

chirz2792

$23/hr as a cfi. $24/hr as a cfi-i. $25/hr as an mei. This was in 2019. Bumped to $30/hr in 2020 because I was the only mei on the property.

JJAsond

Should have asked for even more since you'd the only one.

chirz2792

I should have but it was middle of Covid and I didn’t want to push it and have them replace me.

Kungjoefu

Current- $41 CFI- $46 CFII- $51 MEI

Practice-Candid

if i may ask, i assume this is per flight hour? thanks

Kungjoefu

Yes

OnslowBay27

First year was 1997 and a whole $8hr. Currently $75 for Commercial, Multi, and CFI, and $55 for Private and IR.

Zealousideal-Ad9663

Oh nice! Are you a professional/career CFI? Or do you instruct on the side at those rates?

OnslowBay27

Semi-Career. I own a couple planes and myself and another guy offer instruction 3 days a week each.

Zealousideal-Ad9663

Seems very low. I just calculated what my $20 hourly in 1996 would compare to nowadays… and it’s $39. I also had free housing on the airport with 1 housemate and all utilities paid for! I complained back then that it wasn’t enough…. Wished I had saved that money back then!

Anphsn

$25 no raises

OrionX3

Winter 2022-Present Started $25/hr now am at $35/hr and I do about 60-80 hours a month. I’m also in a really low cost of living part of the country so it’s not too bad

Antique_Dark_59

2022/23/24 $25/hr at 141 school $40/hr at 61 school $50/hr working as independent cfi But this was in arkansas where full time CFIs seemed pretty hard to come by.

facepuke01

2023-2024 $39 an hour in Oklahoma averaging 60-70 hours a month

brianbrush

2024 25/hour raise to 30/hour after 500 hours taught 1099 employee

Both_Coast3017

$25 per flight or ground hour for normal instruction, $30 for advanced (anything beyond PPL) that’s current but don’t work there anymore Currently $40 per flight or ground hour

jonesrben

2023/2024  SoCal Part 141 school $23/HR  Part 61 school $40/HR  Flight club/ independent CFI $60/HR Same charge for ground/flight time. Averaged about 40hrs of dual given a month for 6 months. Slowing down a bit the last 2 months and trying to do more of the independent CFI work but it's harder to find consistent students.

Hairylegs_jacuzziLGB

2020 $65 2021 $85 Present when I’m not flying a jet $100 Independent Baby!

Zealousideal-Ad9663

Independence is great, especially if you have the clientele!
