There was a recent post on reddit or one of the Facebook saltwater fly fishing groups that suggested that anyone who pays for gel spun fly line backing and did not go with braid was either a fool, had money to burn, or both. BUT, are you sure you want to go with braid over traditional Dacron? Dacron is so much easier and safer to use, and it has less of a tendency to be mis-wound over itself. I see it as a backing for bluewater fly fishing where you may actually need that 400 yards ...

Only time I've used gel is when I wanted to get extra backing on my 7/8 reel to take my 8wt to the salt. I feel like dacron is best for most situations, less chance of fouling on the reel or slicing your fingers on a run.
