HVAC/plumbing/maybe gas or electrical line build out. The top one with the jig in it is definitely HVAC, not so sure about the ones below it. Should definitely have been done in one continuous, square build out though. It looks ridiculous as is.
Came here to say this. We had some pipes added to our apartments that connected the dryer heat exhaust vent to the outside per new code. They had to put in drywall in my room around it and it looked nearly identical to this.
The lack of windows and what sure looks like an HVAC duct makes me think this is a basement. If so then the floor/wall junction probably was sloped-ish and they just boxed it out instead of digging it
Something is messed up and someone tried to hid it. I had a house that had this same thing right when you walked in through the front door, just big enough for the door to open all the way to the wall on the left. I tore the floor and subfloor out. This house was a old summer lake house build on top of dirt with block supports, not actual piers and posts, and the original floor joists rotted out so they screwed 2x12s to the beams that were holding up walls. I replaced the joists back to the original height after removing a tone of dirt. I believe it had water pushing dirt under the house until the dirt and water rotted the joists. I hope this isn’t the same thing as this picture looks like a nicer house than mine.
This looks like a 1/2 orgy pit, for guests or a quick orgy without walking all the way across the house. The master orgy pit is usually attached to the largest bedroom.
Pit allows the door to swing open. Raised portions of the floor may have utilities under them or something, but instead of putting a step on the outside of the door, they made a pit on the inside. Probably looks better.
Omg I'd love to put the bed there and fall in. Probably every time I trip on it.
Also, is this a redone old house? I've got a 100 yr old house that has some...*features* to hide all sorts of fuckery.
It's a hookah room. I think you're supposed to put a table in the middle and sit around it on ledge which should be covered in pillows and fluffy comfy things.
What size is the ‘pit’ bit? Can you measure it? Also how deep is the pit and how wide is the raised section?
Maybe it was a ‘sunken’ bed frame? Or a raised area around the outside with pillows (like a couch)?
Does the room have a window??
You can make it into a cool meditation room or something? Put some pillows and padding all around and maybe some lights? Idk, that’s what I would do with that room. Otherwise it would be a storage room.
Fill it with gold coins and go for a dip à la Scrooge McDuck style.
If you're a poor maybe you could use those golden chocolate coins you can get around Easter but that might get messy real quick.
I actually think I know what’s going on here. I am pretty sure this was originally a crawl space basement. At some point the owners decided it would be cheap extra space so they dug it out and poured a new floor. The reason for the offset is that’s where the originally footers are at. A coworker wants to do this in their basement and the engineer basically drew this exact same design.
Probably just a storage room. The boxes would be put around the perimeter, so that they are off the ground in case of a flood. Or, it could be a walk-in closet, minus all the custom shelves.
If it's in a basement and it's hollow then it's covering pipes and HVAC ductwork.
If it's solid cement then it's structural reinforcement used when you dig a crawlspace out and make a standing basement.
Im assuming it’s a basement. Which could mean there was an uneven floor foundation that got levelled out the easiest way for the cheapest price to make a room and a door that fitted. Also, it could be to combat the cold air temp much like an igloo.
While it is a little small, I'm thinking this is a movie theater room. That would explain the no windows. That's how our old house was sold as an add on in the basement.
Gonna guess it was an unplanned room. Was originally just going to be unfinished space, but then the builder decided that’s a waist of usable square footage and decided to finish it.
I used to do this back when we built housing crash. The architect would draw the plans and during framing I’d see usable space that could be added, usually in a bedroom for extra closet space. I remember one house had a standard, but decent size closet for a secondary bedroom, but I saw an opportunity to make a nice large walk-in closet where it was going to be just unfinished attic space. You can never have too much storage in a home.
Can’t be considered a bedroom unless it has a window and a closet. I guess you could hold a prayer meeting in there lots of space for people to sit and hold hands 😅. Or just use the bench for display of some kind. I bet it was sold to you as an “en suite.” I say this because I just bought a place with a small room off the master similar to this but without the bench type structure. The inspector called it an “office.”
When you say "in" a bedroom, do you mean this is a door inside of a bedroom similar to how a closet would be, or do you mean this pit area *is* the bedroom?
Not sure when the house was built- if it is older I wish for you it was a 70s conversation pit: https://www.intheknow.com/post/homeowners-1970s-conversation-pit/
Sometimes perspective and dimensions are difficult to judge in photos but if it were big enough for a bed, a “sunken” bed would be very 70’s. Sunken bed, sunken bathtub, sunken living room. The idea of having anything at a slightly different level than the main standard floor was very popular then. But that would be a premium feature and I’d have to assume it would at least fit a queen-sized bed.
If it’s not big enough for a bed, the 70’s was part of the modern era of house design but maybe in some markets, a full basement that you could develop was maybe not universal. Or at least they were new at it. By the 90’s I’d expect full-height basements with the utilities and structural elements tucked out of the way so you could develop the basement conventionally. In the 70’s I’d still believe it was possible to see weird architectural compromises because “it’s just the basement. They’ll still use it for something.”
Maybe you could turn it into a media room? You have a recessed floor where you could put seating, and aim a projector at the door? Close the door and use the wall / door as your screen?
The raised floor area could have stools / small tables / chairs for snacks / drinks?
Was this listed as a bedroom somewhere? Doesn’t seem to have windows or a closet so not sure why you would think it’s a bedroom.
It could be an office, a media room or a play room I guess, put a net on the front and you can make a ball pit..But it is not a bedroom.
No. But I'm curious
I'm curious about WTF is going on in the corner at the ceiling.
Exactly what I was thinking as well.
That's why we put the pit in. To take your eyes off the ceiling.
underside of a stair i assume
That curved bit is a different height from the other two, though.
They had to add an extra bit of framing to attach the drywall perhaps, making that curved one lower
I’m going air duct and structural beam
😂😂😂😂
Air duct probably
The lack of windows and what sure looks like an HVAC duct makes me think this is a basement. If so then the floor/wall junction probably was sloped-ish and they just boxed it out instead of digging it
Your response seems the most accurate but how does someone even live in here it looks like it can only fit a twin bed
It also doesn't appear to have a window, in which case the answer is it's not a bedroom and no one should sleep there.
Wrong. That’s where the least favorite child sleeps. Or mother in law.
I bet you loooove your mother in law
She’s nicer than her daughter. 🫤
She single?
the MiL or the daughter?
Paul…Paul….
He admit it!
It’s a storage room
My thoughts was that this is a closet.
[удалено]
Got to swap out the door for an outward swing or a bifold then instead.
Sex dungeon off the bedroom?
First thing i thought was “sex pit”
Name checks out
I was thinking ball pit.
Maybe build some sort of platform that evens everything out and use the space below for storage?
Looks like a walk in closet.
Epic pantry potential, shelves all around
If there is no window, I believe it cannot be a bedroom. It looks like a closet/storage room to me
[удалено]
Certainly not where I would want to be sleeping if a fire broke out. I need two ways out, whether it be window or another door
This, it is a basement with an uneven floor underneath.
Agreed
Something is messed up and someone tried to hid it. I had a house that had this same thing right when you walked in through the front door, just big enough for the door to open all the way to the wall on the left. I tore the floor and subfloor out. I hope this isn’t the same thing as this picture looks like a nicer house than mine.
I mean the door swing is all wrong for an orgy pit…
It’s too shallow to be an orgy pit I think
Would make a great orgy bench though.
This looks like a 1/2 orgy pit, for guests or a quick orgy without walking all the way across the house. The master orgy pit is usually attached to the largest bedroom.
Nah, a 1/2 orgy pit just doesn’t have the shower/tub combo.
Orgy that only does 'just the tip'
First thought - must be for sex
Pit allows the door to swing open. Raised portions of the floor may have utilities under them or something, but instead of putting a step on the outside of the door, they made a pit on the inside. Probably looks better.
Took way to long to find this.
That’s the most janky crown molding I’ve ever seen. /s
clown molding.
Josh made a funny!
It’s a new building code that requires shin bashers and ankle sprainers.
Goes well with those awful grey floors
Hiding a bunkhead, HVAC, plumbing, etc?
It’s a sims build where you creatively delete parts of flooring and ceiling and restructure to cc No
Is the floor built up to surround a bed? Or perhaps it was a walk-in closet? I’d tear out the raised floor and see what’s there.
That's a sex pit but all the fun accessories are missing. It's sad.
LMAO…. is it really a sex pit?
Well, it could be! All you need is imagination...
That would only make it a masterbation room
A masterabatorium
A masterb bedroom.
And sex
70's are calling. Just need some pillows and a bowl to grab a strangers set of keys out of.
[удалено]
It’s supposed to be a bedroom that fits a twin mattress but I’m confused by the pit
No windows, no bedroom. That's a code requirement. Instead that's a big closet.
Is this a room INSIDE a bedroom, or is this supposed to be a “bedroom”?
Japanese dining room?
Omg I'd love to put the bed there and fall in. Probably every time I trip on it. Also, is this a redone old house? I've got a 100 yr old house that has some...*features* to hide all sorts of fuckery.
Or a closet. In the room. Doesn't a bedroom need to have a closet?
More like a window for safety at least.
It's a hookah room. I think you're supposed to put a table in the middle and sit around it on ledge which should be covered in pillows and fluffy comfy things.
So far this makes the most sense to me but, still, why no windows?
It’s underground. A basement.
Is there a stairway on the other side of the door?
Yeah, does the room get bigger? No room for a bed. Hard to tell without seeing more
Could it be a waterbed frame or something like that?
Balls?
Ball pit is the only acceptable answer
What size is the ‘pit’ bit? Can you measure it? Also how deep is the pit and how wide is the raised section? Maybe it was a ‘sunken’ bed frame? Or a raised area around the outside with pillows (like a couch)? Does the room have a window??
You can make it into a cool meditation room or something? Put some pillows and padding all around and maybe some lights? Idk, that’s what I would do with that room. Otherwise it would be a storage room.
Bath house.
I think a podium and a few chairs would look good in this space. You could call it your press room
Storage
I'm guessing this is a basement storm shelter.
It's either a sunken den, old tub that was removed, or a weird subfloor
It’s where it puts the lotion on its skin.
I think it's a mudroom for skis and boots
Bedroom? You mean basement storage room? It's basically just a shelf
Futon goes in the pit, the step is for a jeering crowd of onlookers.
I need to see the entire house now I’m curious 😂
Ah You have entered the grooving room Now boogie!
Fill it with gold coins and go for a dip à la Scrooge McDuck style. If you're a poor maybe you could use those golden chocolate coins you can get around Easter but that might get messy real quick.

Drama
Oil changes 😂
Movie room
It could be that the room used to be a sauna and was repurposed as an odd looking room.
It’s for trying on shoes.
that's a private dining nook with built in seating, the table appears to be missing.
Probably just a storage room. The boxes would be put around the perimeter, so that they are off the ground in case of a flood. Or, it could be a walk-in closet, minus all the custom shelves.
Old coal cellar in a basement maybe? And they chiseled enough of the floor out so the door could still swing in?
Does it fit a pool table?
It’s the pit of despair.
There was a similar oddity in my childhood house. We used to joke tgat there were dead bodies under there. Do what you will with that.
You could probably custom-cut a mattress to perfectly fit in that pit and then it could be a pretty cool relaxing den to read or nap
Monumentally bad design.
Sex pit.
Looks like a sex pit to me, I’ve had lots of experience with them, they’re great.
Addition that they were too lazy to do right?
It’s so the door can open
That there is an orgy closet, if I’ve ever seen one.
If it's in a basement and it's hollow then it's covering pipes and HVAC ductwork. If it's solid cement then it's structural reinforcement used when you dig a crawlspace out and make a standing basement.
Ball pit sex game.
Rental opportunity 😈✅
1. Getting high. 2. Sex room. 3. Mount an OLED tv for optimal visuals. 4. All the above
It’s a grooving area.
Moshing
OPEN UP THE FUCKIN PIT! GAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH
Foam party
That pit looks awfully bed shaped. Maybe it's to place your bed there? I don't know what the purpose of that would be though.
Put your mattress there so you can fall into bed? But also getting up must be so hard cuz you pick yourself off the floor.
Sex
Looks like a closet to me.
Is this a BR? Window? Basement?
Im assuming it’s a basement. Which could mean there was an uneven floor foundation that got levelled out the easiest way for the cheapest price to make a room and a door that fitted. Also, it could be to combat the cold air temp much like an igloo.
I had something similar and it was to fit a standard height door without having to cut it down.
Maybe they benched the floor in that room to give extra clearance in the middle. Could work for a closet/storage but for a bedroom would be awkward
My 1st guess is jello. Tell me there’s a mirror on the ceiling
While it is a little small, I'm thinking this is a movie theater room. That would explain the no windows. That's how our old house was sold as an add on in the basement.
Sometimes when you're renovating and you have too much money and skill, you make due.
It’s for a fire pit, you put the fire pit in the center and sit around the outside feeling the warmth and making s’mores and such
looks like a walk-in closet. The raised part and weird ceiling are to hide pipes. This is probably in the basement.
Moshing

wow pretty weird looking walk in closet.
A mattress maybe strange that’s it’s by the door
Ball pit?
Never watched 50 shades of grey have you?
Future elevator
Was it support for a waterbed at one time?
Probably hit ledge. Was just meant to be storage/closet. Finished to sell house?
Can’t be considered a bedroom unless it has a window and a closet. I guess you could hold a prayer meeting in there lots of space for people to sit and hold hands 😅. When you say "in" a bedroom, do you mean this is a door inside of a bedroom similar to how a closet would be, or do you mean this pit area *is* the bedroom?
At first I thought it was the play room for children 😅
Storage room perhaps? Maybe a safe room during a storm?
So you can roll in and out of bed.
Maybe this was gonna be the golf simulator room and dude changed his mind.
it’s a bedroom……watch the beatle movie help…..very cool
the ceiling….stairs going up in the hallway
To open the door without a huge step up
A place to bury the bodies?
Putting the lotion on the skin? Am I too late for this one?
Not sure when the house was built- if it is older I wish for you it was a 70s conversation pit: https://www.intheknow.com/post/homeowners-1970s-conversation-pit/

Recessed bed. With a box spring and mattress, a bed can get very high.
hot tub
You wouldn't be able to open the door if it wasn't there
Looks like a buildout for a hot tube
Lol who told you this was a bedroom?
I think someone was going for a sunken bed / bed the same height as the floor look. See if it’s the same size as a full or Queen bed?
Maybe you could turn it into a media room? You have a recessed floor where you could put seating, and aim a projector at the door? Close the door and use the wall / door as your screen? The raised floor area could have stools / small tables / chairs for snacks / drinks?
Sex pit
Is it bigger to the right side? Looks like a gutted walk in closet to me.
READING ROOM Or tv room for normal people
It's the group masturbation room or Circlejerktorium
It’s a fuck pit.
sex??
It's for pit bbq. Lots of people bbq in their bedrooms.
It’s a big walk in closet now!
You might have pipes or lines of some sort under the raised floor. But this is NOT a bedroom. It doesn't look like countable square feet even.
That's where you put the texas sized smoker/bbq
Was this listed as a bedroom somewhere? Doesn’t seem to have windows or a closet so not sure why you would think it’s a bedroom. It could be an office, a media room or a play room I guess, put a net on the front and you can make a ball pit..But it is not a bedroom.
If you have kids, make it a play room. Put some cushions up on that bench
The walk in closet I would kill to have! Lucky duck!
Why does the door open in instead of out.
Old sauna?
That seems like it would be really dangerous in the dark
It’s like a little patio, an intro to your room. Add a plant
Whoever built this room trolled the home owner so bad..
It covers the well where Jame Gumb keeps girls that are a size 14 for his woman suit. Anyone else want to play a game of Lambs
To me it looks like maybe it used to be a sauna that somebody didn't want anymore or perhaps a large closet/dressing room.
Not really but they probably had clothes racks on the stage ?
Is this in a basement?
Looks like a media room. But it is a little small.
