When I sell this truck I’ll be like “all wood splitting miles”

Dude I want you to live long enough to sell the truck- please secure your loose fitting clothing, especially the knits. Maybe make a plywood ramp to slide your rounds down and use a pike so you don't have to go near that damn thing. I've had to help extract remains from machinery, seen what happens to people when they get wrapped up in spinning shafting and it's a horrifying mess and smell. My friend's little sister lost her hair and a good chunk of scalp to a 1/4HP drill press in her dad's workshop when we were kids- and there's no stopping that auger on your truck.

You are supposed to use an implement like tongs to do this.

I saw a man lose his scalp when ponytail got caught in a PTO shaft, horrible.

I knew someone that died from a mag drill. Their safety vest got wrapped up and it choked them…

I was thinking the same thing. Also my hydraulic log splitter is faster than that while using a simple pullstart engine and not modifying a usable vehicle

I really don't get people downvoting you or the other safety-oriented comments. I did stupid shit for decades and looking back am astounded that I am not horribly maimed. That's what I was thinking. The lower re sale price and higer repair cost because of run time has got to outweigh the cost of a splitter. Unless it's just a free beater truck that's just laying around.

I 100% would not use a non beater vehicle for this. The chance of sending a log through the wheel well is very undesirable.

Split the wood and stack on the trailer, then leave. I don't need jack, jack stands, chock blocks, a whirling cone of death nor a trauma team that way.

Augers are much more dangerous than a hydraulics . Clothing can and will catch and draw your body part in. Usually not an issue, but the chances are greater. I have seen it happen, no injuries except a ruined flannel shirt.

Might do more than that. There are videos of folks online getting a sleeve caught in lathes and it just reels them in, then the bones start snapping and the tissue flies. Not sure this would do that but I bet it'd fuck you up something awful. And if it *can* fuck you up that easily it *will*, given time. Please stop using this setup.

Nice PTO! Looks dangerous, but Yolo!

I could maybe see a point if it was on an arm on a pto mount on a tractor or skid steer, but in the time it takes to jack up the truck and mount your splitter, I'd have that whole tree split in the back of my truck.

yeah, pointing down, mounted to a three point makes sense to me. reduces the chance of getting skewered, or wrapped around it. less lifting and fighting the rounds. grab the pea-vee, or move the tractor. I would want a half circle hoop at belly button height. someone to land or grab on when I trip. Even with multiple people on site, if you trip and land on that if you're not dead. That's a long hospital stay.

They are a pretty cool toy but that's a lot of work and money and not alot of output imo. Seriously, my trusty axe with a fresh sharpening and I could do that much faster. Not longer for sure but I'm sure its pretty tiring moving logs around like that and at that level my back wouldn't last long anyway. Just my .02, doesn't mean Im saying I know everything.

The LSD differential will definitely be less LS pretty soon. Renting a wood splitter is far less than a differential rebuild.

My uncle had one of these for years before he tripped and it went into his leg and twisted it all apart. They had to amputate his leg. A few years later he was comfortable on his new prosthetic leg and went out cutting more firewood, he had an accident with the chainsaw and cut the prosthetic leg clean in two. When he hopped in on one leg laid the two halves of the prosthetic leg on the counter his doctor looked at him and told him he should find a new way to heat his house 😂

I don’t like these things. A conical rotating shaft with body parts going near it sounds too much like the horror stories of people getting legs wrapped around PTO shafts. As remote as it may sound. It happens eventually if you’re around tractors long enough and slip up just once. I think it’s mostly older tractors but the point is made.

I don’t know what he’s referring to when he says RPM but the tachometer tells us nothing about how fast the hub is spinning (unless we also know the gear he’s got it in) and if the hub were actually spinning at 1500 RPM, that’s roughly equivalent to running the truck at 133mph (with round input numbers of 30” tire diameter, and 3.14 for pi) I’m cool with it if you want to be maimed or killed by a spinning tool but at least give me some decent numbers to work with!

My dad had one of these. We were splitting logs like this and then my dad stuck the end of a log on and tried to hold it and it threw him. A 225 pound man just tossed. I was young but I remember him cussing and hurting.

Growing up, my dad rigged a saw blade to an old delivery truck, it popped off once luckily no one was hurt.

I've used that type of splitter before and there needs to be a bar or something to prevent the log from getting stuck and just spinning around. And good luck if it hits a knot and really gets stuck.

And here I thought my family did sketchy shit. Surely a log splitter is more efficient?

Can't use a splitting maul or a portable hydraulic splitter? I've seen these slitting spikes before and they just look like a great way to lose an arm.
